The tear fracture surfaces of mixtures of SKS-85 butadiene — styrene copolymer (85% styrene) with ordinary (carbon black, chalk) and polymeric (Kapron and cellophane powder) fillers have been investigated on the interval from –60 to +40°C. As the temperature varies within the limits of the glassy state (Tg SKS-85=+24°C) of the filled polymer, the nature of the fracture surface of specimens of filled mixtures, like that of the unfilled polymer, changes; in the region of the temperature transition of the copolymer associated with the mobility of the phenyl groups (–10±5°C) there is a slowing of the fracture process. At temperatures below the Tg of the copolymer the tear fracture surfaces of specimens of mixtures containing ordinary and polymeric fillers differ sharply. The introduction of fillers (20 vol. %) with a coefficient of thermal expansion different from that of the filled polymer considerably reduces the resistance of the material to fracture and leads to a sharp increase in the rate of crack propagation; the introduction of polymeric fillers with coefficients of thermal expansion similar to that of the filled polymer leads to an increase in the resistance of the material to fracture and to a decrease in the rate of crack propagation.Moscow Technological Institute of the Meat and Dairy Industry; State Institute of Polymer Adhesives, Kirovakan. An electron microscope was used to study the type of fracture of filled compositions based on SKN-40, SKMS-30, and SKS-85 polymers with TeG-10 thermal-decomposition black, DG-100 channel black, and chalk fillers. Possible fracture mechanisms in filled rubbers are examined in the light of the adhesion theory of elastomer reinforcement. The cases of rubbers containing inactive fillers, when the crack grows along the elastomer-filler boundary, and rubbers containing active fillers, when the crack propagates through the polymer, are considered. A dynamic method has been used to estimate the thixotropic change in the viscoelastic properties of materials. The thixotropic recovery of the structure of a heavily filled rubber, destroyed by processing under stationary conditions, has been investigated. The results of an experimental study on the elastic recovery of filaments of filled rubber mixtures extruded through round ducts of various length are discussed. The results are presented of an electron-microscope investigation of the brittle fracture of linear polyethylene at the temperature of liquid nitrogen. It is shown that the physical nature of the structural details of the microrelief of the fracture surface is conditioned by local plastic deformation of the stratified lamellar structures in a thin layer adjacent to the fracture surface preceding and accompanying fracture. This paper is part of a research stream whose purpose is to study the effect of simulation response surface behavior on the choice of appropriate simulation optimization search technique. This paper's research lays some groundwork by examining the behavior of simulation response surfaces themselves. The point here is not to criticize existing simulation-optimization techniques (such as Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Rather, one point is to emphasize the care and precision that must be used to invoke extant procedures properly, while another is to demonstrate the need for additional methods such as nonparametric approaches. In particular, this paper examines a simple, inventory-simulation model under various experimental conditions, including some factors under a user's control, and some not. Both point and region estimates of surface characteristics are determined and graphed while such factors as number of replications, simulation run length, and demand and lead-time variances are varied. It is found, for example, that even for this simple surface such optimization techniques as first-order RSM can be inappropriate over 21–98% of the feasible region, depending on the case. Four implications are noted from the research: the care that should be exercised with existing simulation-optimization techniques; the need for a simulation-optimization starter; the importance of examining global, nonparametric-metamodeling approaches to simulation optimization; and the desirability of investigating a multi-strategy approach to optimization. Investigations of the relief of fracture surfaces in PMMA with the help of optical and interference microscopes have shown that there are no qualitative differences in the appearance of the fracture surfaces obtained under static and cyclic loading conditions. Quantitative studies have established that the size of the specular zone increases linearly with increase in the logarithm of the lifetime at a given test temperature. Other conditions being equal, in cyclic tests the specular zone is larger than in static tests. Proximal femur fractures are very common injuries especially among older patients. Although, there are various alternatives and improvements in implant design and operating techniques, the treatment still represents a big medical challenge. Therefore, the understanding of crack initiation and propagation in the proximal femur is of great interest. The objective of this work is to present a simplified phenomenological model that is able to predict crack initiation and propagation in the proximal femur.
