ABSTRACT

Heat exchanger networks are important systems in most thermal engineering systems and are found in applications ranging from power plants and the process industry to domestic heating. Achieving cost-effective design of heat exchanger networks relies heavily on mathematical modelling and simulation-based design. Today, stationary design calculations are carried out for all new designs, but for some special applications, the transient response of complete networks has been researched. However, simulating large heat exchanger networks poses challenges due to computational speed and stiff initial value problems when flow equations are cast in differential algebraic form. In this article, a systems approach to heat exchanger and heat exchanger network modelling is suggested. The modelling approach aims at reducing the cost of system model development by producing modular and interchangeable models. The approach also aims at improving the capability for large and complex network simulation by suggesting an explicit formulation of the network flow problem.  相似文献

We present a new optimization model for the tactical design of scheduled service networks for transportation systems where several entities provide service and internal exchanges and coordination with neighboring systems is critical. Internal exchanges represent border crossings necessitating changes of vehicles, while the coordination with neighboring systems represents intermodal operations. For a given demand, the model determines departure times of the services such that throughput time of the demand in the system is minimized. The model is an extension of the design-balanced capacitated multicommodity network design model that we denote service network design with asset management and multiple fleet coordination to emphasize the explicit modeling of different vehicle fleets. Data from a real-world problem addressing the planning of new rail freight services across borders serves to illustrate the capabilities of the formulation. We analyze how synchronization with collaborating services and removal of border-crossing operations impact the throughput time for the freight. We identify a significant potential for system performance enhancement from synchronization among collaborating services for the problem studied.  相似文献

Applying GIS and Combinatorial Optimization to Fiber Deployment Plans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A decision-support system for the Fiber Deployment Plan problem is developed for the telephone cable network design in the telecommunications industry. The system employs a Geographic Information System (GIS) and uses combinatorial optimization techniques as its components. A mathematical combinatorial optimization model is formulated for the problem and a heuristic solution procedure is developed for the model. A GIS within the ESRI Arc/INFO and ArcView environment is used to provide data needed to build the mathematical combinatorial optimization model and to furnish an interface between the users and computers in data input and in solution result display. Combinatorial optimization techniques are used in the heuristic solution procedure to find good solutions for the optimization model. The developed decision-support system has been used to real life problems and has resulted in tremendous improvements in the telephone cable network design process. The user is completely satisfied with the performance of the system.  相似文献

Industrial water systems often allow efficient water uses via water reuse and/or recirculation. The design of the network layout connecting water-using processes is a complex problem which involves several criteria to optimize. Most of the time, this design is achieved using Water Pinch technology, optimizing the freshwater flow rate entering the system. This paper describes an approach that considers two criteria: (i) the minimization of freshwater consumption and (ii) the minimization of the infrastructure cost required to build the network. The optimization model considers water reuse between operations and wastewater treatment as the main mechanisms to reduce freshwater consumption. The model is solved using multi-objective distributed Q-learning (MDQL), a heuristic approach based on the exploitation of knowledge acquired during the search process. MDQL has been previously tested on several multi-objective optimization benchmark problems with promising results [C. Mariano, Reinforcement learning in multi-objective optimization, Ph.D. thesis in Computer Science, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Campus Cuernavaca, March, 2002, Cuernavaca, Mor., México, 2001]. In order to compare the quality of the results obtained with MDQL, the reduced gradient method was applied to solve a weighted combination of the two objective functions used in the model. The proposed approach was tested on three cases: (i) a single contaminant four unitary operations problem where freshwater consumption is reduced via water reuse, (ii) a four contaminants real-world case with ten unitary operations, also with water reuse, and (iii) the water distribution network operation of Cuernavaca, Mexico, considering reduction of water leaks, operation of existing treatment plants at their design capacity, and design and construction of new treatment infrastructure to treat 100% of the wastewater produced. It is shown that the proposed approach can solved highly constrained real-world multi-objective optimization problems.  相似文献

Recent research has demonstrated that little validation is carried out during and after the building of operational research models for decision support. In a subject area that has been of great interest for more than a decade, this reflects the fact that validation is not yet firmly embedded into the methodology of mathematical modelling that underpins conventional decision support systems. With the interest now being shown in expert systems, it is important to devise an appropriate methodology of validation for such systems. This paper contributes to this development by describing the types of validation that should be performed with decision support systems, and compares and contrasts the features found in the validation of mathematical models with those required of validation of expert systems.  相似文献

Bayesian networks model conditional dependencies among the domain variables, and provide a way to deduce their interrelationships as well as a method for the classification of new instances. One of the most challenging problems in using Bayesian networks, in the absence of a domain expert who can dictate the model, is inducing the structure of the network from a large, multivariate data set. We propose a new methodology for the design of the structure of a Bayesian network based on concepts of graph theory and nonlinear integer optimization techniques.  相似文献

The fields of operations research (OR) and artificial intelligence (AI) provide complementary methods that may be combined into managerial decision support systems (DSS). However, the management domain is substantially different from domains in which prior expert systems have been developed. Consequently, successful application of OR/AI techniques in managerial DSS requires careful analysis and additional development. Ongoing research concerning design and implementation of managerial DSS is discussed. A prototype system capable of constructing linear statistical models of direct and indirect relationships from a knowledge base of relationships is described and evaluated.  相似文献

Efficient and effective incidental scheduling techniques for schedule perturbation are essential to an airline carrier's operations. This research aims at developing a framework to assist carriers in fleet routing and flight scheduling for schedule perturbations in the operations of multifleet and multistop flights. The framework is based on a basic multifleet schedule perturbation model constructed as a timespace network from which strategic models are developed to research incidental scheduling. These network models are formulated as multiple commodity network flow problems. Lagrangian relaxation with subgradient methods accompanied by the network simplex method, a Lagrangian heuristic and a modified subgradient method are developed to solve the problems. A case study regarding the international operations of a major Taiwan airline carrier is presented.  相似文献

Literature illustrates the difficulties in obtaining the lowest-cost optimal solution to an ore blending problem for blast furnaces by using the traditional trial-and-error method in iron and steel enterprises. To solve this problem, we developed a cost optimization model which we have implemented in a multi-role-based decision support system (DSS). On the basis of analyzing the business flow and working process of ore blending, we propose an architecture of DSS which is built based on multi-roles. This DSS construction pre-processes the data for materials and elements, builds a general database, abstracts the related optimal operations research models and introduces the reasoning mechanism of an expert system. A non-linear model of ore blending for blast furnaces and its solutions are provided. A database, a model base and a knowledge base are integrated into the expert system-based multi-role DSS to meet the different demands of data, information and decision-making knowledge for the various roles of users. A comparison of the results for the DSS and the trial-and-error method is provided. The system has produced excellent economic benefits since it was implemented at the Xiangtan Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd., China.  相似文献

Operations management is an area that has recently started to benefit from the use of AI techniques such as expert systems, neural networks and genetic algorithms. These techniques can extend the usefulness of OR modelling and enable new types of decision tasks to be supported by computer-based systems. This paper attempts to review ‘intelligent’ decision support systems and their potential to address some of the problems faced in various areas of operations management. Some useful techniques developed in the field of artificial intelligence are outlined and examples of attempts to use these approaches to support decision making in various areas of operations management are described. Recognising the scale of a complete review of all these areas, emphasis has been given to the most significant and more recent publications.  相似文献

In the search for better optimisation techniques, new methods that mix artificial intelligence and operations research have emerged. Search heuristics are integrated with optimisation algorithms. Approximation methods, like Hill Climbing, Simulated Annealing, and Tabu Search, that have been used with success in combinatorial optimisation problems, are one of such research lines. This paper presents the key elements of approximation methods and combines them in a tool appropriate for solving sequencing and resource allocation problems. The system permits a clear division between problem specification and problem solving, allowing a declarative representation and therefore minimising developing costs. The key issues discussed in this work are a model for representing this class of problems in a standard form, a set of strategies for applying the approximation methodology, and an expert system that dynamically manipulates the strategies' parameters.  相似文献

Due to the growing popularity of distributed computing systems and the increased level of modelling activity in most organizations, significant benefits can be realized through the implementation of distributed model management systems (DMMS). These systems can be defined as a collection of logically related modelling resources distributed over a computer network. In several ways, functions of DMMS are isomorphic to those of distributed database systems. In general, this paper examines issues viewed as central to the development of distributed model bases (DMB). Several criteria relevant to the overall DMB design problem are discussed. Specifically, this paper focuses on the problem of distributing decision models and tools (solvers), henceforth referred to as theModel Allocation Problem (MAP), to individual computing sites in a geographically dispersed organization. In this research, a 0/1 integer programming model is formulated for the MAP, and an efficient dual ascent heuristic is proposed. Our extensive computational study shows in most instances heuristic-generated solutions which are guaranteed to be within 1.5–7% of optimality. Further, even problems with 420 integer and 160,000 continuous variables took no more than 60 seconds on an IBM 3090-600E computer.  相似文献

A neural network model for solving an assortment problem found in the iron and steel industry is discussed in this paper. The problem arises in the yard where steel plate is cut into rectangular pieces. The neural network model can be categorized as a Hopfield model, but the model is expanded to handle inequality constraints. The idea of a penalty function is used. A large penalty is applied to the network if a constraint is not satisfied. The weights are updated based on the penalty values. A special term is added to the energy function of the network to guarantee the convergence of the neural network which has this feature. The performance of the neural network was evaluated by comparison with an existing expert system. The results showed that the neural network has the potential to identify in a short time near-optimal solutions to the assortment problem. The neural network is used as the core of a system for dealing with the assortment problem. In building the neural networks system for practical use, there were many implementation issues. Some of them are presented here, and the fundamental ideas are explained. The performance of the neural network system is compared to that of the expert system and evaluated from the practical viewpoint. The results show that the neural network system is useful in handling the assortment problem.  相似文献

Analytical modelling of the work flow through flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), based on closed queueing network models, has been successfully applied to the early stages of design and analysis of FMSs. This paper describes the advantages of using multiple job-class closed queueing networks for modelling realistic situations occurring in FMSs. The general modelling of FMSs by closed queueing networks is first reviewed. The way Solberg's CAN-Q—a single job-class queueing-based package—deals with several part types is clarified. A new model called MULTIQ, allowing multiple pallet types, each of which is used by several part types, is proposed. Results are derived using the data from an existing FMS. The use of the MULTIQ model for optimization purposes is suggested by some examples.  相似文献

Much work has been done on the development of modelling techniques to assist in the process of decision-making. The areas of operational research and statistical analysis are well established, and the speed and memory capacity of computers has facilitated the solution of very large problems using such techniques. Recent developments in artificial intelligence, particularly with regard to expert systems, open up the possibility of modelling the decision-maker rather than the decision situation. This would result in a much more sophisticated decision-support system, but as yet it is an approach which has not been investigated to any significant degree. This paper suggests how AI techniques might be combined with traditional problem-based methodologies to provide a comprehensive decision-analysis support-system framework, modelling the activities of a human decision-maker and providing access to a host of traditional and artificial intelligence tools which can be effectively interfaced.  相似文献

This paper explores the model development process in discrete-event simulation (DES) by reporting on an empirical study that follows six expert modellers while building simulation models. DES is a widely used modelling approach, however little is known about the modelling processes and methodology adopted by modellers in practice. Verbal Protocol Analysis is used to collect data, where the participants are asked to speak aloud while modelling. The results show that the expert modellers spend a significant amount of time on model coding, verification and validation, and data inputs. The modellers iterate often between modelling activities. Patterns of modelling behaviour are identified, suggesting that the modellers adopt distinct modelling styles. This study is useful in that it provides an empirical view of existing DES modelling practice, which in turn can inform existing research and simulation practice as well as teaching of DES modelling to novices.  相似文献

The paper focuses on the similarity between modelling and knowledge representation, trying to bring together the OR/Systems Science and the Artificial Intelligence views when referring to a computer system simulation, especially of the discrete-event or the network types. The models we consider are generalized activity networks with resources, including either models with a finite lifetime, such as project scheduling networks, or steady state models, such as queueing networks. By enhancing the structure of entities and states and the logic of transitions within a model specification, modularity is improved and one may adopt a more declarative approach. The relational and rule-based representation formalisms are a convenient choice for that purpose. Then, the use of knowledge bases both for the static (i.e. consultative) and the dynamic (i.e. experimental) study of the model turns up to be more natural. Moreover, the task of building an expert system for decision support on system analysis or synthesis becomes easier. The paper reports some original work in the above directions, using a logic programming approach and an associated specification methodology based on general systems concepts.  相似文献

Recent economic pressures have forced the Australian sugar industry to achieve better integration and optimization of the cane harvesting and transport sectors of the value chain. The logistical and economic complexity of the harvesting and transport system was captured through the development of a modelling framework that effectively links several component models that describe the parts of the system. Through engaging in participatory research with representatives of a sugar region located at the north-east coast of Australia, we use this modelling framework to address some key industry issues in rationalizing rail track infrastructure and re-organizing harvesting. These issues were addressed by building component models for the modelling framework in the field of location science, namely the capacitated P-Median problem and spatial clustering. By applying the modelling framework and its component models to the case-study region, we explored a range of scenarios with a net cost reduction of up to AU$2?260?000 per year.  相似文献
