The photo-induced micellization was attained for a poly(4-pyridinemethoxymethylstyrene)-block-polystyrene diblock copolymer using diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate, a photo-acid generator. Dynamic light scattering demonstrated that the copolymers with a 27.2-nm hydrodynamic diameter self-assembled into micelles with a 68.9-nm diameter by irradiation of a 1,4-dioxane solution of the copolymer using a high-pressure mercury lamp. The micellization was completed within 5 h based on the variation in the scattering intensity and the hydrodynamic diameter of the copolymer. It was found that the copolymer formed monodispersed spherical micelles because G1(τ), the normalized time correlation function of the scattered field, showed a linear decay. Furthermore, the proton nuclear magnetic resonance analysis confirmed that the micelles had cores formed by the poly(4-pyridinemethoxymethylstyrene) blocks. It was suggested that the micellization occurred by electron transfer from the pyridine to the photo-acid generator in their excited states.  相似文献

Analogous to the self-assembly of low-molecular-weight amphiphiles in aqueous solutions, the formation of spherical micelle-like aggregates has been observed in systems of amphiphilic block copolymers in water. The aggregates, often called micelles due to structural similarities with surfactant associates, are found to exist above the critical micelle concentration (cmc). The micellization of amphiphilic block copolymers has been investigated using a wide range of techniques, such as size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS), small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), viscometry, and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The present lecture is a review of recent work in our laboratory concerning the micellization of ionic block copolymers. These high-molecular-weight amphiphiles may contain one or more of a variety of ionic blocks, such as poly(4-vinylpyridinium alkyl halides), poly(metal acrylates), poly(metal methacrylates) and sulfonated polystyrene. In water, such polymers are referred to as block polyelectrolytes, as they combine the colloidal behavior of block copolymers with the long-range electrostatic interactions of polyelectrolytes. Early work in this field has been reviewed by Selb and Gallot.1  相似文献

The effects of the block copolymer composition and the solvent selectivity on the micellar morphologies of poly(styrene- b-4-vinylpyridine)s (PS- b-P4VPs) and their functionalizations with gold were studied in 10 mg/mL solutions using small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The solvent selectivity for the PS block was controlled by toluene/tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixtures in which toluene and THF are selective for PS and nonselective, respectively. The micellar structure was strongly dependent on phi (wt % toluene in toluene/THF mixture) and the composition of the block copolymers. PS(12K)- b-P4VP(11.8K) (symmetric) showed spherical micelles in the entire range of phi except phi = 0 (THF, nonselective solvent). PS(3.3K)- b-P4VP(18.7K) (asymmetric, longer P4VP) showed multiple morphologies with transitions from spheres to cylinders and finally to vesicles with an increase in phi. PS(19.6K)- b-P4VP(5.1K) (asymmetric, longer PS) showed spherical micelles only at the narrow ranges of 90 wt % 相似文献

The formation and structural features of micelles from low molecular weight diblock copolymers of poly(methylmethacrylate-b-ethylene oxide) PMMA-PEO (varying in total molecular weight) and poly(butylmethacrylate-b-ethylene oxide) PBMA-PEO in water, aqueous NaCl and urea solutions were examined by surface tension, dye spectral, cloud point, viscosity and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. The increasing concentrations of NaCl reduce the onset concentration of micellization and phase separation, while urea has reverse effect. The analysis of the SANS curves revealed the presence of prolate ellipsoidal micelles in diblock copolymers at various experimental concentrations and temperatures studied. The effect of temperature, NaCl and urea on the neutron scattering profiles are more or less the same which is well supported by viscosity and surface tension measurements. The diblock copolymers form spherical micelles of aggregation number in the range of 522-664. The micelles are very temperature stable.  相似文献

Triblock copolymers could form supramolecules in either polar or nonpolar solvents at appropriate concentration and temperature ranges or in the presence of additives. The association properties and the structure of supramolecules of PEO-PPO-PEO and PPO-PEO-PPO (PEO and PPO refer to poly(oxyethylene) and poly(oxypropylene), respectively) triblock copolymers in xylene and/or water were investigated by using light scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The association process of aqueous solution or water-rich ternary systems was entropy driven and temperature played an important role. The additive, e.g., water in the oil-rich ternary system, played a very important role on the micellization of PEO-PPO-PEO, e.g., Pluronic L64, in xylene. The micelles had a core-shell structure and the micellar shell was rather heavily solvated. At high copolymer concentrations, large aggregates with a lamellar structure was formed and the amount of large aggregates increased with increasing copolymer concentration before gel formation.  相似文献

This report investigates the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on the micellization, surface activity, and the evolution in the shape and size of n-octyl beta-D-thioglucopyranoside (OTG) aggregates. By using surface tension measurements, information was obtained on both changes in the critical micelle concentration and adsorption behavior in the air-liquid interface with the electrolyte concentration. These data were used to obtain the thermodynamic properties of micellization along with the corresponding adsorption parameters in the air-liquid interface. From extended static and dynamic light scattering measurements, the micelle molecular weight, the mean aggregation number, and the second virial coefficient, the apparent diffusion coefficient and the mean hydrodynamic radius of micelles in a range of NaCl concentrations were obtained. The light scattering data have shown that when the surfactant concentration is lower to 4.5 g/L, only spherical micelles are formed. However, an increase in the surfactant concentration induces an increase in micellar size, suggesting a rodlike growth of the micelles. This deviation of micelle geometry from spherical to rodlike is supported both by the ratio between the hydrodynamic radius and the radius of gyration and by the angular dependence of light scattering. On the other hand, the studies performed in the presence of high NaCl concentration (0.2 and 0.5 M) provide strong support for the view that the micelles may overlap together to form an entangled network above certain crossover concentration.  相似文献

Fluorine-containing amphiphilic block copolymers, poly(sodium methacrylate)-block-poly(nonafluorohexyl methacrylate) (NaMAm-b-NFHMAn) (m:n = 61:12, 72:33, 64:57), and the corresponding non-fluorine-containing amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(sodium methacrylate)-block-poly(hexyl methacrylate) (NaMAm-b-HMAn) (m:n = 64:10, 69:37, 67:50), were synthesized. Both polyNaMA-b-polyNFHMA and polyNaMA-b-polyHMA formed micelles above critical micelle concentrations, (cmc's), around 3 x 10(-5) to 1 x 10(-4) mol/L, while neither polymer decreased surface tension of aqueous solutions. The size and shape of the micelles were examined by dynamic light scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering. PolyNaMA-b-polyHMA appeared to form only spherical micelles, while polyNaMA-b-polyNFHMA with a long NFHMA segment formed both spherical and rodlike micelles. The micelles of fluorine-containing block copolymers were obviously larger than those of non-fluorine-containing block copolymers with the same chain length and the same hydrophilic/hydrophobic chain ratio. The fluorine-containing block copolymer selectively solubilized fluorinated dye into the water phase when a mixture of decafluorobiphenyl and 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene was added to the micelle solution.  相似文献

In this article, we report the first micellization study of amphiphilic copolymers composed of bacterial medium chain length poly(3-hydroxyalkanoates) (mcl-PHAs). A series of diblock copolymers based on fixed poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) block (5000 g mol(-1)) and a varying poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHOHHx) segment (1500-7700 g mol(-1)) have been synthesized using "click" chemistry. These copolymers self-assembled to form micelles in aqueous media. The influence of PHOHHx block molar mass on the hydrodynamic size and on the critical micelle concentration (CMC) has been studied using dynamic light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. With increasing PHOHHx length, narrowly distributed micelles with diameters ranging from 44 to 90 nm were obtained, with extremely low CMC (up to 0.85 mg/L). Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) showed that micelles took on a spherical shape and exhibited narrow polydispersity. Finally, the colloidal stability of the micelles against physiological NaCl concentration has been demonstrated, suggesting they are promising candidates for drug delivery applications.  相似文献

Polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymers form micelles in toluene with PAA as the core and PS as the corona. The introduction of poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PMMA-b-PEO) solution in toluene leads to mixed micelles due to the hydrogen-bonding complexation between PAA and PEO. By using a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering, we have investigated the evolution of the mixed micelles. Our results revealed that the complexation between PAA and PEO in the core and the segregation between PS and PMMA in the corona as a function of the molar ratio (r) of PEO to PAA manipulate the evolution. At r < approximately 1.0, the mixed micelles hold a spherical structure after a long-time standing. However, at r > approximately 1.0, the average radius of gyration Rg, the average hydrodynamic radius , and the ratio / of the mixed micelles increase with time, whereas the molar mass (Mw) does not change. The facts indicate that the mixed micelle has evolved from a spherical structure to a hyperbranched structure.  相似文献

A series of large-scale atomistic molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to study the structural and interfacial properties of nonionic dimethyldodecylamine-N-oxide (DDAO) micelles with an aggregation number of 104 in pure water, which was determined using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). From these simulations, the micelles were found to be generally ellipsoidal in shape with axial ratios of ~1.3-1.4, which agrees well with that found from small-angle neutron scattering measurements. The resulting micelles have an area per DDAO molecule of 94.8 ?(2) and an average number of hydration water molecules per DDAO molecule of ~8. The effect of the encapsulation of ethyl butyrate (CH(3)(CH(2))(2)COOCH(2)CH(3), C(4)) and ethyl caprylate (CH(3)(CH(2))(6)COOCH(2)CH(3), C(8)) on the structural and interfacial properties of the nonionic DDAO aggregates was also examined. In the presence of the C(4) oil molecules, the aggregates were found to be less ellipsoidal and more spherical than the pure DDAO micelles, while the aggregates in the presence of the C(8) oil molecules were almost perfect spheres. In addition, the C(4) oil molecules move into the core of the aggregates, while the C(8) oil molecules stay in the headgroup region of the aggregates. Finally, the structural properties of two micelles formed from different starting states (a "preassembled" sphere and individual DDAO molecules distributing in water) were found to be nearly identical.  相似文献

Structure formation of propylene oxide oligomers with terminal hydrophobic aliphatic fragment and of oligo(propylene oxides) additionally containing covalently bonded fullerene C60 in deuterium water was studied by small-angle neutron scattering. Propylene oxide chains containing a long hydrophobic fragment undergo organization into spherical micelles, whereas the fullerene(C60)-containing derivatives form rodlike structures (elongated “chains” of cross-linked micelles).  相似文献

The associative behavior of monodisperse diblock copolymers consisting of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) block and a hydrophobic poly(epsilon-caprolactone) or poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) block has been studied in aqueous solution. Copolymers have been directly dissolved in water. The solution properties have been studied by surface tension, in relation to mesoscopic analyses by NMR (self-diffusion coefficients), transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering. The experimental results suggest that micellization occurs at low concentration (approximately 0.002 wt %) and results in a mixture of unimers and spherical micelles that exchange slowly. The radius of the micelles has been measured (ca. 11 nm), and the micellar substructure has been extracted from the fitting of the SANS data with two analytical models. The core radius and the aggregation number change with the hydrophobic block length according to scaling laws as reported in the scientific literature. The poly(ethylene oxide) blocks are in a moderately extended conformation in the corona, which corresponds to about 25% of the completely extended chain. No significant modification is observed when poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) replaces poly(epsilon-caprolactone) in the diblocks.  相似文献

Models for small-angle scattering of spherical micelles are briefly reviewed, considering both the intra-molecular form factor and the inter-molecular structure factor. Recent examples from the literature, where such approaches have been used to extract information on micellar structure and ordering, are then discussed. A particular emphasis is on micelles formed by block copolymers in solution.  相似文献

The copolymer of beta-casein-graft-dextran was prepared using the Maillard reaction and the acidic solution properties of the copolymer were studied with dynamic light scattering. At pH range 4-5 where is close to the isoelectric point of beta-casein, the copolymer forms micelles which are spherical verified by atomic force microscopy imaging. The size and existent time of the micelles depend on the graft degree and the length of dextran side chains of the copolymers. During storage at pH 4.6, the micelles formed by the copolymers with short side chains and low graft degree tend to precipitate, while the micelles formed by the copolymers with long side chains and high graft degree tend to dissociate. The micellization of the copolymers can be suppressed by adding NaCl. Optical microscopy and turbidity studies show that the copolymers dissolved in molecular state and with higher hydrophilicity have better emulsifying ability.  相似文献

Joint micellization of two amphiphilic diblock copolymers is studied by velocity sedimentation, transmission electron microscopy, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and static light scattering. One of the diblock copolymers is a strong polyelectrolyte (polystyrene-block-poly(N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide)), while the second one is a weakly charged or uncharged copolymer (polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) or polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)). It is shown that the mixing of the diblock copolymers in a selective aqueous-organic solvent (DMF-methanol-water) leads to the formation of joint (hybrid) micelles and that the composition of these micelles is close to the composition of the polymer mixture. Micelles consist of an insoluble polystyrene core and a mixed corona composed of blocks of a strong polyelectrolyte and a weakly charged or uncharged copolymer. Aqueous dispersions of mixed micelles are obtained with the use of the dialysis technique, the spherical morphology of the micelles is ascertained, and their three-layered structure is proposed. The nonlinear dependence of the molecular mass of micelles on their composition is found. The decisive effect of electrostatic repulsion between strong polyelectrolyte units on the thermodynamics of micellization and the dispersion stability and molecular-mass characteristics of the mixed micelles is demonstrated.  相似文献

This is the first light scattering study demonstrating that the size of micelles, the aggregation number, and the mobility of the core blocks of the micelles could be controlled by the length of the cross-linker in the micellar cores. The core cross-linked micelles were prepared using a poly[(4-pyridinemethoxy-methyl)styrene]-block-polystyrene (PPySt-b-PSt) diblock copolymer and perfluoroalkyl dicarboxylic acid. The PPySt-b-PSt copolymer formed the micelles in THF, a nonselective solvent, in the presence of the perfluoroalkyl dicarboxylic acid. The light scattering studies demonstrated that the micellar size and aggregation number were dependent on the chain length of the perfluoroalkyl dicarboxylic acid. Perfluoroazelaic acid produced micelles with a larger hydrodynamic radius and higher aggregation number than tetrafluorosuccinic acid. The micellization proceeded through the formation of the pyridinium carboxylate and the cross-linkage between the PPySt blocks via the dicarboxylic acid. The core cross-linked micelles were thermally stable and maintained its structure with changes in the temperature. A 1H NMR analysis revealed that the micelles prepared by perfluoroazelaic acid had more mobility of the core blocks than those by tetrafluorosuccinic acid.  相似文献

The effect of adding an alcohol ethoxylate nonionic surfactant (C(18)E(18)) to aqueous solutions of a cationic surfactant, erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl) methylammonium chloride (EHAC,CH(3)(CH(2))(7)(CH)(2)(CH(2))(12)N(+)-(CH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)CH(3)Cl(-)), was studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), steady-state rheology, and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM). This cationic surfactant has the ability to self-assemble into giant wormlike micelles in the presence of an electrolyte, such as KCl. In salt-free solutions, the mixture of the two surfactants gave rise to spherical micelles. The scattering curves obtained were fitted with a polydisperse core-shell model combined with a Hayter Penfold potential. The inner and outer radii were found to be dependent on the surfactant ratio. In the presence of KCl, mixed wormlike micelles were formed. However, further addition of C(18)E(18) promoted the breaking of the micellar worms with the appearance of a structure peak in the scattering curves. In addition, it was found that the low shear viscosity is decreased upon addition of the alcohol ethoxylate nonionic surfactant. These findings are in good qualitative agreement with the Cryo-TEM images. The results show that the addition of the nonionic surfactant to the system is a method of controlling the worm length.  相似文献

We present an electric-field-triggered sphere-to-cylinder transition of negatively charged block copolymer micelles with a radically low electric field of 30 V/cm. The system investigated is dilute solutions of strong polyelectrolyte containing ionic-b-neutral block copolymers (i.e., poly(styrenesulfonate-b-methylbutylene)). We have carried out in situ small-angle X-ray scattering experiments equipped with a dc power supply, combined with electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The application of small electrical fields across the solutions of spherical micelles results in the transient morphology of interconnected spheres, which are eventually transformed into a cylindrical shape with time. The E-field-induced cylindrical micelles revert to spherical micelles when the E field is switched off.  相似文献
