Nanocomposites of a charring polymer (like polyurethane foam) filled with aluminum phosphinate (AlPi) with or without melamine cyanurate (MelCy) have been prepared by microwave processing and their thermal stability and fire behavior have been studied. Results on the interaction between flame retardants and layered silicates were provided as well as detailed investigation of the char strength, which has been carried out using a suitably developed method based on dynamic-mechanic analysis.  相似文献

An inorganic azo diphosphonate (INAZO), (KO)2(O)P-NN-P(O)(OK)2·4H2O, was synthesized and tested as a novel type of flame retardant additive for castor oil and oligomeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (PMDI) based two component polyurethane adhesive with or without using dolomite ((CaMg(CO3)2) as filler. Flammability according to UL 94 test and performance under forced-flaming conditions (cone calorimeter) were investigated at the additive loadings of 5, 10 and 20 wt %. It was shown that INAZO improves flame retardancy by significantly reducing heat release rate (HRR), maximum average rate of heat emission (MARHE) and total smoke release (TSR) values in comparison to CaMg(CO3)2 filled polyurethane adhesives. The macroscopic structure of the sample residues after cone calorimeter measurement was also analysed. The action mechanism of the developed INAZO flame retardant is suggested to be mainly in the condensed phase. UL 94 V-0 rating was achieved in the vertical burning test when 10 wt % loading of INAZO was used, whereas the reference flame retardant ammonium polyphosphate (APP) required a loading of 20 wt % to reach the V-0 classification.  相似文献

The combination of synergistic agent with intumescent flame retardant (IFR) systems provides a promising way to prepare high performance IFR composites. In this study, the effects of the synthetic zeolite 4 A in combination with the IFR system consisting of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocynurate (THEIC) on thermal degradation, mechanical properties, flame retardancy and char formation of high-density polyethylene composites were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurement, cone calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and laser Raman spectroscopy. The LOI value of HD/FR/Z-0.5 composite with an optimum content of 0.5 wt. % zeolite 4 A and 25 wt. % of total flame retardant reaches 26.3 %. A low loading of zeolite 4 A can improve the bench-scale combustion performance as determined by cone calorimetry, and promote the formation of more compact char residue with a highly graphitic structure. However, a low loading of zeolite in combination with the IFR system consisting of APP and THEIC produces no significant changes in mechanical performance.  相似文献

Synergy in flame retardancy of polyurethane foams between phosphorus-based flame retardant (aluminium phosphinate) and layered silicates has been investigated. We used pristine montmorillonite as well as ammonium modified clay (commercially available) and diphosphonium modified clay, which were synthesised by the intercalation of the quaternary diphosphonium salt according to a procedure reported here. The morphology of the foams was characterised through X-ray diffraction (XRD), while thermal properties were characterised by oxygen index test, cone calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphological characterisation showed that pristine and diphosphonium modified clays are almost slightly intercalated, while ammonium modified one is very well dispersed. The results of thermal characterisation showed that in the presence of phosphinate enhancements of oxygen index, fire behaviour, measured by cone calorimeter, and thermal stability have been achieved. Phosphinate is therefore an efficient flame retardant for polyurethane foams and its flame retardancy action takes place in both condensed and gas phases. Pristine and ammonium modified layered silicate bring some enhancements of thermal stability while having no important effect in decreasing peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat evolved (THE) when used in conjunction with phosphinate; their main advantage is related to the enhancement of compactness of the char layer formed. Diphosphonium clay is instead effective in further improving the fire behaviour of the foams because of the flame retardancy action of phosphonium: both PHRR and THE were decreased. The analysis of cone calorimeter data showed that clays act through physical effect constituting a barrier at the surface which is effective in preventing or slowing the diffusion of volatiles and oxygen, while phosphinate and phosphonium are more effective owing to their combined action in both condensed and gas phases.  相似文献

The morphology of carbonized materials resulting from an intumescence phenomenon was studied. The investigated material is a polyurethane matrix filled either by 30 wt.-% of ammonium polyphosphate or by a combination of 28 wt.-% of ammonium polyphosphate and 2 wt.-% of nano-magnesium oxide. These fillers were incorporated in the polyurethane directly during the synthesis step. The carbonized materials or char, are obtained in a specific fire scenario. Characterization of their morphology is carried out using X-ray computed tomography. The heat conductivity of the systems is additionally measured as a function of temperature in order to correlate structure and properties of the intumescent residues. The formation of different char structures with incorporation of magnesium oxide (in particular formation of bubbles of different size) is first evidenced. These observations are consistent with the heat conductivity data. Tomography images demonstrate that the intumescence process is a dynamic process since non degraded polymer is left at the beginning of the fire test, which is not the case for longer time. The dispersion of fillers has finally been investigated in the chars and it is evidenced different steps of intumescence's development in the material.  相似文献

Nano-crystalline cellulose was fabricated in an anhydrous phosphoric acid system with medical absorbent cotton as its raw material. After ammonia neutralization, the whole system with produced phosphates and hydrolyzed saccharides was used as a modifier for preparing polyurethane foam (PUF). The NCC worked as a reinforce material, the phosphates served as flame-retardants, and the hydrolyzed saccharides partly replaced polyol. The addition of the modifier significantly improved mechanical property and flame-retardancy without an inferior thermal conductivity. When the dosage of modifier was 6% of the whole polyol, compressive strength increased 4.29 times, heat release rate dropped to 50.7%, and time to ignition extended to 2.6 times of those of the neat PUF. XRD and TEM analyses proved that the NCC in the modifier was rod-shape cellulose Ⅱ with diameter of 10 nm or so. FTIR analysis confirmed that the modifier well reacted with isocyanate, and SEM results revealed that the flame-retardant PUF had more uniform cells and more regular skeleton structure than the neat PUF.  相似文献

A novel phosphorous-nitrogen structure containing intumescent flame retardant, poly(4,4-diaminodiphenyl methane spirocyclic pentaerythritol bisphosphonate) (PDSPB) was synthesized and characterized. Thermal stability and flammability properties of ABS/PDSPB composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter test, respectively. The results showed that the addition of PDSPB enhanced the thermal stability and flame retardancy of ABS significantly. The weight of residues improved greatly with the addition of PDSPB. FTIR and SEM investigations revealed that the residual chars contain polyphosphoric or phosphoric acid, which plays an important role in the process of carbonization. The intumescent chars formed from PDSPB and ABS/PDSPB composites were intact, multicellular and strong. It is confirmed that the char structure was a critical factor for flame retardancy of ABS resin.  相似文献

A phosphorous‐nitrogen intumescent flame‐retardant, 2,2‐diethyl‐1,3‐propanediol phosphoryl melamine (DPPM), was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. Flame‐retardant rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) with DPPM (DPPM‐RPUF) as fire‐retardant additive were prepared. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mechanical performance testing showed that DPPM exhibited a favorable compatibility with RPUF and negligibly negative influence on the mechanical properties of RPUF. The flame retardancy of DPPM on RPUF was investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test and cone calorimeter. The LOI of DPPM‐RPUF could reach 29.5%, and a UL‐94 V‐0 rating was achieved, when the content of DPPM was 25 php. Furthermore, the DPPM‐RPUF exhibited an outstanding water resistance that it could still obtain a V‐0 rating after water soaking. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the residual weight of RPUF was relatively low, while the charring ability of DPPM‐RPUF was improved greatly. Real‐time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to study the thermo‐oxidative degradation reactions of DPPM‐RPUF. The results revealed that the flame‐retardancy mechanism of DPPM in RPUF was based on the surface charred layer acting as a physical barrier, which slowed down the decomposition of RPUF and prevented the heat and mass transfer between the gas and the condensed phases.  相似文献

A new triazine polymer was synthesized by using cyanuric chloride, ethanolamine and ethylenediamine as raw materials. It is used both as a charring agent and as a foaming agent in intumescent flame retardants, designated as charring-foaming agent (CFA). Effect of CFA on flame retardancy, thermal degradation and mechanical properties of intumescent flame retardant polypropylene (PP) system (IFR-PP system) has been investigated. The results demonstrated that the intumescent flame retardant (IFR) consisting of CFA, APP and Zeolite 4A is very effective in flame retardancy of PP. It was found that when the weight ratio of CFA to APP is 1:2, that is, the components of the IFR are 64 wt% APP, 32 wt% CFA and 4 wt% Zeolite 4A, the IFR presents the most effective flame retardancy in PP systems. LOI value of IFR-PP reaches 37.0, when the IFR loading is 25 wt% in PP. It was also found that when the IFR loading is only 18 wt% in PP, the flame retardancy of IFR-PP can still pass V-0 rating, and its LOI value reaches 30.2. TGA data obtained in pure nitrogen demonstrated that CFA has a good ability of char formation itself, and CFA shows a high initial temperature of the thermal degradation. The char residue of CFA can reach 35.7 wt% at 700 °C. APP could effectively promote the char formation of the APP-CFA system. The char residue reaches 39.7 wt% at 700 °C, while it is 19.5% based on calculation. The IFR can change the thermal degradation behaviour of PP, enhance Tmax of the decomposition peak of PP, and promote PP to form char, based upon the results of the calculation and the experiment. This is attributed to the fact that endothermic reactions took place in IFR charring process and the char layer formed by IFR prevented heat from transferring into inside of IFR-PP system. TGA results further explained the effective flame retardancy of the IFR containing CFA.  相似文献

This paper reports decomposition/pyrolysis studies of polyurethane (PU) rigid foams containing phosphinate, phosphonate or phosphate as flame retardant in order to study the effect of phosphorus oxidation state on their gas and/or solid phase action. The flame retardants analyzed were aluminium phosphinate (IPA), dimethylpropanphosphonate (DMPP), triethylphosphate (TEP) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP), which differ in oxidation state and/or decomposition temperature. Gases evolved during TGA analyses as well as solid residues have been studied by means of MS and FTIR.The results show that phosphorus flame retardants which significantly lose weight at temperatures lower than those of neat PU foams act in the gas phase irrespective of their valency: indeed, they are completely volatilized before polymer decomposition starts and thus no interaction between flame retardant and polymer can be expected. The effect of phosphorus oxidation state becomes important when flame retardant decomposition takes place in the same temperatures range as neat polymer. In this case, it seems that at lower P oxidation state (+1) a combined gas and solid phase action takes place while at higher P oxidation state (+5) only solid phase action was observed.  相似文献

Polyurethane/polyhedral oligomeric sisesquioxane (PU/POSS) nanocomposites were syn-thesized via polymerization utilizing the compatibility between POSS nanoparticles and 4,4'-diphenyl methylene diisocyanate. Scanning electron microscope images and Fouriertransform infrared spectra revealed that POSS nanoparticles were dispersed in PU matrix.Thermal gravimetric analysis was employed to investigate the thermal decomposition be-havior of PU/POSS nanocomposites at elevated temperatures. Then fire performance wasevaluated by limiting oxygen index, underwriters laboratories 94 testing and char residue morphology. These results showed that the addition of POSS promoted the formation of char residues which were covered on the surface of polymer composites, leading to the im-provement of thermal stability and flame retardancy.  相似文献

The flammability characteristics and flame retardant mechanism of phosphate-intercalated hydrotalcite (MgAl-PO4) in the halogen-free flame retardant ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) blends have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, cone calorimeter test (CCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 tests. The results show that the hydrotalcite MgAl-PO4 intercalated by phosphate possesses the enhanced thermal stability and flame retardant properties compared with ordinary carbonate-intercalated hydrotalcite MgAl-CO3 in the EVA blends. The CCT tests indicate that the heat release rate (HRR) and mass loss rate (MLR) values of the EVA/MgAl-PO4 samples are much lower than those of the EVA/MgAl-CO3 samples. The TGA data show that the thermal degradation rates of MgAl-PO4 and EVA/MgAl-PO4 samples are much slower and leave more charred residues than those of MgAl-CO3 and its corresponding EVA blends. The LOI values of EVA/MgAl-PO4 samples are 2% higher than those of the corresponding EVA/MgAl-CO3 samples at the range of 40–60 wt% loadings, while the EVA sample with 55 wt% MgAl-PO4 can reach the UL-94 V-1 rating. The dynamic FTIR spectra reveal that the flame retardant mechanism of MgAl-PO4 can be ascribed to its catalysis degradation of the EVA resin, which promotes the formation of charred layers with the P–O–P and P–O–C complexes in the condensed phase. The SEM observations give further evidence of this mechanism that the compact charred layers formed from the EVA/MgAl-PO4 sample effectively protect the underlying polymer from burning.  相似文献

Low flame retardant efficiency is a key bottleneck for currently available retardants against the flammable polypropylene (PP). Herein, the organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) was utilized as a synergist for our previously reported intumescent flame retardant (IFR) that was constructed from ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and hyperbranched charring foaming agent (HCFA) to further enhance the retardant efficiency against PP. The resultant's combustion behavior was thoroughly investigated by cone calorimetry, limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that 20% addition of IFR with OMMT showed a positive effect and improved the flame retardancy of the PP systems. Especially, addition of 2 wt% OMMT obviously increased the LOI values of PP systems with 20% total loading flame retardants from 29% to 31.5% and the samples meet V‐0 rating as well as the reduction of the heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), CO2, and CO production occurred. On the other hand, the SEM images were also revealed that OMMT initiated a dense and strong char on the surface of the material, which resulted in efficient flame retardancy of PP matrix during combustion. In addition, thermal degradation behavior discussed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that OMMT could improve the thermal stability of PP systems under high temperature, and promoted char residues of PP/IFR systems. Pentaerythritol diphosphonate melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin salt, a novel cheap macromolecular intumescent flame retardants (IFR), was synthesized, and its structure was a caged bicyclic macromolecule containing phosphorus characterized by IR. Epoxy resins (EP) were modified with IFR to get the flame retardant EP, whose flammability and burning behavior were characterized by UL 94 and limiting oxygen index (LOI). 25 mass% of IFR were doped into EP to get 27.2 of LOI and UL 94 V-0. The thermal properties of epoxy resins containing IFR were investigated with thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermogravimetry (DTG). Activation energy for the decomposition of samples was obtained using Kissinger equation. The resultant data show that for EP containing IFR, compared with EP, IFR decreased mass loss, thermal stability and R max, increased the char yield. The activation energy for the decomposition of EP is 230.4 kJ mol−1 while it becomes 193.8 kJ mol−1 for EP containing IFR, decreased by 36.6 kJ mol−1, which shows that IFR can catalyze decomposition and carbonization of EP.  相似文献

<正>Synergistic effects of layered double hydroxide(LDH) with intumescent flame retardanct(IFR) of phosphorus-nitrogen (NP) compound in the polypropylene/ethylene-propylene-diene/IFR/LDH(PP/EPDM/IFR/LDH) nanocomposites and related properties were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),limiting oxygen index(LOI),UL-94 test, cone calorimeter test(CCT) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA).The XRD and TEM results show that the intercalated and/or exfoliated nanocomposites can be obtained by direct melt-intercalation of PP/EPDM into modified LDH and that LDH can promote the IFR additive NP to disperse more homogeneously in the polymer matrix. The SEM results provide positive evidence that more compact charred layers can be obtained from the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH sample than those from the PP/EPDM/LDH and PP/EPDM/NP samples during burning. The LOI and UL-94 rating tests show that the synergetic effects of LDH with NP can effectively increase the flame retardant properties of the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH samples. The data from the CCT and TGA tests indicate that the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH samples apparently decrease the HRR and MLR values and thus enhance the flame retardant properties and have better thermal stability than the PP/EPDM/LDH and PP/EPDM/NP samples.  相似文献

This study describes the mechanism of flammability reduction in flame-retarded polymer matrix organo-montmorillonite reinforced nanocomposites. Morphologies of untested polymer nanocomposites and char residues formed by combustion in the mass loss calorimeter are characterized by XRD and TEM techniques. It is postulated that a combination of well-dispersed montmorillonite platelets and flame retardants in the polymer matrix provides nano-structured char formation. Initial montmorillonite dispersion in flame-retarded nanocomposites is found to be a major controlling factor on formed char nanostructures. An initially intercalated structure is invariantly converted to complete montmorillonite collapse whereas an initially exfoliated structure transforms to nano-structured chars demonstrating retained exfoliation or a new state of intercalation via incomplete collapse of montmorillonite layers. It is proposed that nano-structured char formation is the effective mechanism of flammability reduction, i.e. reduction in rate of heat release during combustion, in flame-retarded polymer nanocomposites.  相似文献

Phosphorus tailings and fly ash both are solid wastes and do harm to the environment. Here, they were added into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrices together with intumescent flame retardants (IFR), and the synergistic effects between IFR and phosphorus tailings or fly ash for improving the flame retardancy of TPU were investigated. The cone calorimeter test (CCT) results indicated that adding phosphorus tailings or fly ash substitute for part of IFR could obtain a better flame retardant effect. The peak heart release rate (PHRR) of TPU/25 wt% IFR composites exhibited a reduction of 77% than that of neat TPU, and the total smoke production presented a reduction of 16%. However, the PHRR value and total smoke production of the sample TPU/20 wt% IFR/5 wt% phosphorus tailings were reduced by 91% and 57%, respectively, compared to that of neat TPU. The dense char promoted by the presence of IFR and phosphorus tailings or fly ash delayed the diffusion of volatile pyrolysis products and transmission of heat and oxygen to the underlying material. Therefore, a certain amount of phosphorus tailings or fly ash can be used as synergistic agents with IFR to enhance the fire safety of TPU materials. From another aspect, it also provides a promising way for recycling use of phosphorus tailings and fly ash.  相似文献

The charring agent (CNCA‐DA) containing triazine and benzene rings was combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to form intumescent flame retardant (IFR), and it was occupied to modify polylactide (PLA). The flame retardant properties and mechanism of flame retardant PLA composites were investigated by the limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), thermogravimetric analysis, microscale combustion calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The analysis from LOI and UL‐94 presented that the IFR was very effective in flame retardancy of PLA. When the weight ratio of APP to CNCA‐DA was 3:1, and the IFR loading was 30%, the IFR showed the best effect, and the LOI value reached 45.6%. It was found that when 20 wt% IFR was loaded, the flame retardancy of PLA/IFR still passed UL‐94 V‐0 rating, and its LOI value reached 32.8%. The microscale combustion calorimetry results showed that PLA/IFR had lower heat release rate, total heat release, and heat release capacity than other composites, and there was an obvious synergistic effect between APP and CNCA‐DA for PLA. IFR containing APP/CNCA‐DA had good thermal stability and char‐forming ability with the char residue 29.3% at 800°C under N2 atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy observation further indicated that IFR could promote forming continuous and compact intumescent char layer. The laser Raman spectroscopy analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results indicated that an appropriate graphitization degree of the residue char was formed, and more O and N were remained to form more cross‐linking structure. To minimize the loading level of the char-forming phosphorus based flame retardants in the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with reduced flammability, we have developed the flame-retarded PLA nanocomposites by melt blending method incorporating organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and aluminium diethylphosphinate (AlPi) additives. The influence of AlPi and OMMT on flame retardancy and thermal stability of PLA was thoroughly investigated by means of the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL94 test, cone calorimeter, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The experimental results show that the PLA/AlPi/OMMT system has excellent fire retardancy. The LOI value increases from 19% for pristine PLA to 28% for the flame-retarded PLA. Cone calorimeter analysis of the PLA/AlPi/OMMT exhibits a reduction in the peak heat release rate values by 26.2%. Thermogravimetric analysis and SEM of cone calorimeter residues indicate that OMMT significantly enhances the thermal stability, promotes char-forming and suppresses the melt dripping. The research of this study implies that the combining of the flame retardant and organoclay results in a synergistic effect. In addition, the flame-retarded PLA nanocomposite also exhibits notable increase in the impact strength and the elongation at break.  相似文献
