The chemical dealloying mechanism of bimetallic Pt–Co nanoparticles (NPs) and enhancement of their electrocatalytic activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have been investigated on a fundamental level by the combination of X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Structural parameters, such as coordination numbers, alloy extent, and the unfilled d states of Pt atoms, are derived from the XAS spectra, together with the compositional variation analyzed by line‐scanning energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX) on an atomic scale, to gain new insights into the dealloying process of bimetallic Pt–Co NPs. The XAS results on acid‐treated Pt–Co/C NPs reveal that the Co–Co bonding in the bimetallic NPs dissolves first and the remaining morphology gradually transforms to a Pt‐skin structure. From cyclic voltammetry and mass activity measurements, Pt–Co alloy NPs with a Pt‐skin structure significantly enhance the catalytic performance towards the ORR. Further, it is observed that such an imperfect Pt‐skin surface feature will collapse due to the penetration of electrolyte into layers underneath and cause further dissolution of Co and the loss of Pt. The electrocatalytic activity decreases accordingly, if the dealloying process lasts for 4 h. The findings not only demonstrate the importance of appropriate treatment of bimetallic catalysts, but also can be referred to other Pt bimetallic alloys with transition metals.

Polymer-stabilized platinum/ruthenium bimetallic colloids (Pt/Ru) were synthesized by polyol reduction with microwave irradiation and characterized by TEM and XPS. The colloidal nanoparticles have small and narrow size distributions. Catalytic performance of the Pt/Ru colloidal catalysts was investigated on the selective hydrogenation of crontonaldehyde (CRAL). A suitable amount of the added metal ions and base can improve the selectivity of CRAL to crotylalcohol (CROL) remarkably. The catalytic activity and the selectivity are dependent on the compositions of bimetallic colloids. Thereinto, PVP-stabilized 9Pt/1Ru colloid with a molar ratio of metals Pt:Ru = 9:1 shows the highest catalytic selectivity 77.3% to CROL at 333 K under 4.0 MPa of hydrogen.

Superior catalytic performance for selective 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BD) hydrogenation can usually be achieved with supported bimetallic catalysts. In this work, Pt−Co nanoparticles and Pt nanoparticles supported on metal–organic framework MIL-100(Fe) catalysts (MIL=Materials of Institut Lavoisier, PtCo/MIL-100(Fe) and Pt/MIL-100(Fe)) were synthesized via a simple impregnation reduction method, and their catalytic performance was investigated for the hydrogenation of 1,3-BD. Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) presented better catalytic performance than Pt/MIL-100(Fe), with significantly enhanced total butene selectivity. Moreover, the secondary hydrogenation of butenes was effectively inhibited after doping with Co. The Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) catalyst displayed good stability in the 1,3-BD hydrogenation reaction. No significant catalyst deactivation was observed during 9 h of hydrogenation, but its catalytic activity gradually reduces for the next 17 h. Carbon deposition on Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) is the reason for its deactivation in 1,3-BD hydrogenation reaction. The spent Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) catalyst could be regenerated at 200 °C, and regenerated catalysts displayed the similar 1,3-BD conversion and butene selectivity with fresh catalysts. Moreover, the rate-determining step of this reaction was hydrogen dissociation. The outstanding activity and total butene selectivity of the Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) catalyst illustrate that Pt−Co bimetallic catalysts are an ideal alternative for replacing mono-noble-metal-based catalysts in selective 1,3-BD hydrogenation reactions.

The existence of bimetallic particles (and their reducibility and location on/or in the support) in Ru–Co/NaY and Pt–Co/NaY samples has been studied by in situ X-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS). It is established that in Ru–Co/NaY the monometallic clusters maintain their identity, whereas in Pt–Co/NaY the existence of small bimetallic particles can be established. In both cases the results are supported by other techniques, such as XPS and temperature-programmed reduction. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Platinum (Pt) is recognized as an excellent cocatalyst which not only suppresses the charge carrier recombination of the photocatalyst but also reduces the overpotential for photocatalytic H2 generation. Albeit of its good performance, the high cost and low abundance restricted the utilization of Pt in large-scale photocatalytic H2 generation. Pt based transition metal alloys are demonstrated to reveal enhanced activities towards various catalytic reactions, suggesting the possibility to substitute Pt as the cocatalyst. In the present work, Pt was partially substituted with Co, Ni, and Fe and Pt-M (M = Co, Ni, and Fe)/g-C3N4 composites were constructed through co-reduction of H2PtCl6 and transition metal salts by the reductant of ethylene glycol. The crystal structure and valence states were measured by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), respectively. The higher degree of XRD peaks and larger binding energies for Pt 4f5/2 and Pt 4f7/2 after incorporating Co2+ ions indicated that Co was successfully introduced into the lattice of Pt and Pt-Co bimetallic alloys was attained through the solvothermal treatment. The morphology was subsequently observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), which showed a good dispersion of Pt-Co nanoparticles on the surface of g-C3N4. Meanwhile, the shrinkage of lattice fringe after introducing cobalt salt further confirmed the presence of Pt-Co bimetallic alloys. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of g-C3N4 and Pt, Pt-Co deposited g-C3N4 were subsequently performed. It was found that the absorption edges were all consistent for all three samples as anticipated, implying that the band gap energy was maintained after hybridizing with Pt or Pt-Co alloys. Furthermore, the photocatalytic H2 generation was carried out over the as-prepared composites with triethanolamine (TEOA) as sacrificial reagent. Under visible-light illumination, the1% (w) Pt2.5M/g-C3N4 (M = Co, Fe, Ni) composites all exhibited higher or comparable activity towards photocatalytic H2 generation when compared to 1% (w) Pt loaded counterpart. In addition, the atomic ratios of Pt/Co and the loading amount of Pt-Co cocatalyst were modified to optimize the photocatalytic performance, among which, 1% (w) Pt2.5Co/g-C3N4 composite revealed the highest activity with a 1.6-time enhancement. Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra indicated that the enhancement might be attributed to improved charge transfer from g-C3N4 to Pt2.5Co cocatalyst and inhibited charge carrier recombination in the presence of Pt2.5Co cocatalyst. Therefore, the present study demonstrates the great potential to partially replace Pt with low-cost and abundant transition metals and to fabricate Pt based bimetallic alloys as promising cocatalysts for highly efficient photocatalytic H2 generation.

The adsorption of OOH, the main product of the first step in the O2 reduction on Pt(1 1 1) surfaces, is studied on Pt-based bimetallic three-atom clusters. Cr, Co, and Ni are better adsorption sites for OOH than Pt, but the strong adsorption might not favor the dissociation of OOH. However, the presence of Cr, Co, or Ni in the vicinity of a Pt atom increases its electron density, enhancing the Pt ability to transfer electrons to oxygenated species. Thus, Cr, Co, or Ni in the subsurface, rather than on the exposed surface, may contribute favorably to catalyze the O2 reduction.

Three‐dimensional (3D) Pt‐based alloy nanostructures composed of one‐dimensional (1D) nanowires/nanorods have recently attracted significant interest as electrocatalysts. In this work, we report an effective solvothermal method for the direct preparation of 3D Pt–Co nanowire assemblies (NWAs) with tunable composition. The composition‐ and structure‐dependent electrocatalytic performance is thoroughly investigated. Because of the bimetallic synergetic effect and unique structural advantage, the as‐prepared 3D Pt3Co NWA outperforms commercial Pt/carbon and Pt black catalysts and even 3D Pt NWA. The electrochemical results demonstrate that the 3D Pt3Co NWA is indeed a promising electrocatalyst with enhanced catalytic activity and improved durability for practical electrocatalytic applications.

Pt‐Co/Al2O2 catalyst has been studied for CO2 reforming of CH4 to synthesis gas. It was found that the catalytic performance of me catalyst was sensitive to calcination temperature. When Co/Al2O3 was calcined at 1473 K prior to adding a small amount of Pt to it, the resulting bimetallic catalyst showed high activity, optimal stability and excellent resistance to carbon deposition, which was more effective to the reaction than Co/Al2O3 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. At lower metal loading, catalyst activity decreased in the following order: Pt‐Co/ Al2O3 > Pt/Al2O3 > Co/Al2O3. With 9% Co, the Co/Al2O3 calcined at 923 K was also active for CO2 reforming of CH4, however, its carbon formation was much more fast man that of the Pt‐Co/Al2O3 catalyst. The XRD results indicated that Pt species well dispersed over the bimetallic catalyst. Its high dispersion was related to the presence of CoAl2O4, formed during calcining of Co/Al2O3 at high temperature before Pt addition. Promoted by Pt, Co/Al2O4 in the catalyst could be reduced partially even at 923 K, the temperature of pre‐reduction for the reaction, confirmed by TPR. Based on these results, it was considered that the zerovalent platinum with high dispersion over the catalyst surface and the zerovalent cobalt resulting from Co/Al2O4 reduction are responsible for high activity of the Pt‐Co/Al2O3 catalyst, and the remain Co/Al2O4 is beneficial to suppression of carbon deposition over the catalyst.

In the Letter, we demonstrate an improved electroless plating method for the synthesis of bimetallic shell particles. The procedure involves a combination of surface reaction, seeding growth, and removal of supporting cores. We modified ammonical AgNO3 in ethanol with a controlled amount of HCHO in the seeding process and a uniform and relatively dense coverage of silver nanoparticle seeds on colloid cores was achieved. Following the second kind of metal plating, we extended this method to prepare continuous bimetallic core-shell and hollow particles with a submicrometer diameter. The morphologies of the bimetallic Cu/Ag and Pt/Ag particles were studied with transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and their crystallinity and chemical composition were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The prepared materials may be of applied value in areas such as catalysis, optics, and plasmonics.

Platinized nickel and cobalt coatings, Pt(Ni) and Pt(Co), have been prepared on glassy carbon, GC, rotating disc electrode substrates by a two-step room temperature procedure that involved the electrodeposition of nickel and cobalt layers and their spontaneous partial replacement by platinum (“transmetalation”) when immersed into a chloroplatinic acid solution. By tuning the quantity of initially deposited nickel and cobalt, Pt(Ni) and Pt(Co) bimetallic coatings having a 26% atom Ni and 30% atom Co composition have been prepared. For both materials typical Pt surface electrochemistry was recorded during fast voltammetry in deaerated acid, pointing to the existence of a continuous Pt skin over a Pt–Ni and Pt–Co core. Oxygen reduction at the Pt(Ni)/GC and Pt(Co)/GC electrodes was studied by means of steady-state voltammetry at a rotating disc electrode and the construction of Tafel plots from corresponding voltammetric data. It was found that, when the initial potential of the voltammetric sweep allowed the formation of a complete Pt oxide monolayer, then oxygen reduction was hindered for low overpotentials at Pt(Ni) and Pt(Co), compared to pure bulk Pt. On the other hand, when the initial potential was less positive (thus leading to the formation of a fraction of surface oxide monolayer) the presence of Ni and Co enhanced the kinetics of oxygen reduction. The former behaviour is attributed to a decrease in oxide reduction ability of Pt in the presence of Ni and Co, while the latter to an increase in dissociative oxygen chemisorption due to Ni and Co.

The surface properties of bimetallic Ni-Pt/SiO2 catalysts with variable Ni/Ni + Pt atomic ratio (0.75, 0.50, and 0.25) were studied using N2O decomposition and N2O reduction by hydrogen reactions as probes. Catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation of the silica support with aqueous solutions of the metal precursors to a total metal loading of 2 wt %. For both model reactions, Pt/SiO2 catalyst was substantially more active than Ni/SiO2 catalyst. Mean particle size by TEM was about the same (in the range 6-8 nm) for all catalysts and truly bimetallic particles (more than 95%) were evidenced by EDS in the Ni-Pt/SiO2 catalysts. CO adsorption on the bimetallic catalysts showed differences in the linear CO absorption band as a function of the Ni/Pt atomic ratio. Bimetallic Ni-Pt/SiO2 catalysts showed, for the N2O decomposition, a catalytic behavior that points out an ensemble-size sensitive behavior for Ni-rich compositions. For the N2O + H2 reaction, the bimetallic catalysts were very active at low temperature. The following activity order at 300 K was observed: Ni75Pt25 > Ni25Pt75 approximately Ni50Pt50 > Pt. TOF values for these catalysts increased 2-5 times compared to the most active reference catalyst (Pt/SiO2). The enhancement of the activity in the Ni75Pt25 bimetallic catalysts is explained in terms of the presence of mixed Ni-Pt ensembles.

We investigate the decomposition of ammonia on bimetallic surfaces prepared by the deposition of a monolayer of Fe, Co, or Cu on a Pt(111) surface computationally and experimentally. We explore the correlation between predicted activities based on the nitrogen binding energies with experimental decomposition activity on these bimetallic and corresponding monometallic surfaces. Through density functional theory calculations and microkinetic modeling, it is predicted that the Fe-Pt-Pt(111) and Co-Pt-Pt(111) surfaces, with a monolayer of Fe or Co on top of Pt(111), are active toward decomposing ammonia. In contrast, the corresponding subsurface configurations, Pt-Fe-Pt(111) and Pt-Co-Pt(111) are inactive. These predictions were confirmed experimentally through temperature programmed desorption experiments. Decomposition was seen at temperatures below 350 K for the Fe-Pt-Pt(111) and Co-Pt-Pt(111) surfaces. For the Cu∕Pt(111) system, the surface, subsurface and parent metals were each predicted to be inactive, consistent with experiments, further validating the model predictions. The stability of these bimetallic surfaces in the presence of adsorbed nitrogen is also discussed.

Small-sized bimetallic nanoparticles that integrate the advantages of efficient exposure of the active metal surface and optimal geometric/electronic effects are of immense interest in the field of catalysis, yet there are few universal strategies for synthesizing such unique structures. Here, we report a novel method to synthesize sub-2 nm bimetallic nanoparticles (Pt–Co, Rh–Co, and Ir–Co) on mesoporous sulfur-doped carbon (S–C) supports. The approach is based on the strong chemical interaction between metals and sulfur atoms that are doped in the carbon matrix, which suppresses the metal aggregation at high temperature and thus ensures the formation of small-sized and well alloyed bimetallic nanoparticles. We also demonstrate the enhanced catalytic performance of the small-sized bimetallic Pt–Co nanoparticle catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes.

The strong interactions between metal and sulfur atoms doped in a carbon matrix allow for the synthesis of supported sub-2 nanometer M–Co (M = Pt, Rh, Ir) bimetallic nanocluster catalysts.

Co thin films with novel hierarchical structures were controllably fabricated by simple electrochemical deposition in the absence of hard and soft templates, which were used as sacrificial templates to further prepare noble metal (Pd, Pt, Au) hierarchical micro/nanostructures via metal exchange reactions. SEM characterization demonstrated that the resulting noble metal thin films displayed hierarchical architectures. The as-prepared noble metal thin films could be directly used as the anode catalysts for the electro-oxidation of formic acid. Moreover, bimetallic catalysts (Pt/Au, Au/Pt) fabricated based on the monometallic Au, Pt micro/nanostructures exhibited the higher catalytic activity compared to the previous monometallic catalysts.

Development of Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction catalysts with high efficiency and high durability is central to the application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cell systems. Pt–Co bimetallic catalysts have drawn extensive attention owing to their capability of delivering high performance and long lifetime for fuel cell applications including light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. However, further improvements in durability and performance are needed to meet market requirements. To fully exploit the potential of Pt–Co catalysts, new insights into the relationship between catalyst properties and fuel cell performance and durability are needed, and more effective methods to tailor the features of Pt–Co catalysts need to be developed. This review provides a summary and perspective on recent efforts, including work on customizing the Pt shell and Pt:Co ratio, tailoring the crystal structure, and improving carbon support properties, with a particular emphasis on mechanisms leading to enhancement of mass activity, power density, and durability in membrane electrode assembly testing.

In this study, we examined the amount-dependent change in morphology for a series of Au/Pt bimetallic nanoparticles synthesized using chemical reduction. The Au/Pt molar ratio was varied from 1/1 to 1/4 to synthesize Pt shell layers with different thicknesses. We have obtained that these bimetallic nanoparticles can form flower-like nanoparticles. Moreover, an extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis was used to demonstrate the structure of Au/Pt bimetallic nanoparticles. The EXAFS results confirmed the formation of a core–shell structure and inter-diffusion between Au and Pt atoms. The composition of the shell layer was found to be Pt-enriched Au/Pt alloy.
