A universally significant method, which combines the anionic polymerization with photoinduced charge transfer polymerization, for preparation of soluble star ABC triblock copolymer of ethylene oxide, styrene and methyl methacrylate, was described. The poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block was formed by initiation of phenoxy an-ions using p-aminophenol protected by Schiff's base as the parent compound Then the charge transfer system composed of PEO chains with deprotected-amino end groups and benzophenone initiated the polymerization of styrene and methyl metnacrylate sequentially under UV irradiation. The formed star triblock copolymer of styrene, ethylene oxide and methyl methacrylate could be purified by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and characterized by IR,1H NMR,GPC (gel permeation chromatogrphy) and PGC (pyrolysis gas chromatography).  相似文献

A well‐defined linear ABC triblock copolymer of ethylene oxide (EO), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and styrene (St) was prepared by sequential living anionic and photo‐induced charge transfer polymerization (CTP) using p‐aminophenol as parent compound. In the first step, the diblock copolymer of PEO‐b‐PMMA with a protected aniline end group at PEO end was prepared by initiating of phenoxo‐anion the polymerization of EO and MMA successively, then the diblock copolymer of PEO‐b‐PMMA via deprotection of aniline at PEO end constituted a binary initiation system with benzophenone (BP) by charge transfer complex mechanism to initiate the polymerization of St under UV‐irradiation. The GPC and NMR measurements support that in copolymerization, either in the first or second step, neither homopolymer nor side reactions, such as chain transfer or chain termination, was found. The effect of the concentration of PEOab‐PMMA and St, and the polarity of solvent on the polymerization rate (Rp) of CTP is discussed. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The copolymer of polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly (tert‐butyl acrylate) (PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PtBA) was prepared, the synthesis process involved ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy (HTEMPO) was used as parent compound. The PEO precursors with α‐hydroxyl‐ω‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy end groups(TEMPO‐PEO‐OH) were first obtained by ROP of EO using HTEMPO and diphenylmethylpotassium (DPMK) as the coinitiator. The TEMPO at one end of PEO chain mediated the polymerization of St using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The resultant PS‐b‐PEO‐OH reacted further with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide and then initiated the polymerization of tBA in the presence of CuBr and PMDETA by ATRP. The ternary block copolymers PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PtBA and intermediates were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in detail. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements confirmed that the PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PtBA with PEO as middle block can weaken the interaction between PS and PtBA blocks, the glass transition temperature (Tg) for two blocks were approximate to their corresponding homopolymers comparing with the PEO‐b‐PS‐b‐PtBA with PEO as the first block. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of three series of double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs), consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) as the neutral water soluble block and a second polyelectrolyte block of variable chemistry, is described. The synthetic scheme involves the anionic polymerization of poly(ptert‐butoxystyrene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (PtBOS‐PEO) amphiphilic block copolymer precursors followed by the acidic hydrolysis of the hydrophobic poly(ptert‐butoxystyrene) (PtBOS) block to an annealed anionic polyelectrolyte poly(p‐hydroxystyrene) (PHOS) block. The PHOS block was subsequently transformed into a high charge density annealed cationic polyelectrolyte namely poly[3,5‐bis(dimethylaminomethylene) hydroxystyrene] (NPHOS), via aminomethylation. Finally, the NPHOS block was transformed into a quenched polyelectrolyte, namely quaternized poly[3,5‐bis(dimethylaminomethylene) hydroxystyrene] (QNPHOS) block by reaction with CH3I. The solution properties of the different series of the above block polyelectrolyte copolymers have been investigated using static, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, turbidimetry, and fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The functionalization of monomer units in the form of macroinitiators in an orthogonal fashion yields more predictable macromolecular architectures and complex polymers. Therefore, a new ‐shaped amphiphilic block copolymer, (PMMA)2–PEO–(PS)2–PEO–(PMMA)2 [where PMMA is poly(methyl methacrylate), PEO is poly (ethylene oxide), and PS is polystyrene], has been designed and successfully synthesized by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and living anionic polymerization. The synthesis of meso‐2,3‐dibromosuccinic acid acetate/diethylene glycol was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene via ATRP to yield linear (HO)2–PS2 with two active hydroxyl groups by living anionic polymerization via diphenylmethylpotassium to initiate the polymerization of ethylene oxide. Afterwards, the synthesized miktoarm‐4 amphiphilic block copolymer, (HO–PEO)2–PS2, was esterified with 2,2‐dichloroacetyl chloride to form a macroinitiator that initiated the polymerization of methyl methacrylate via ATRP to prepare the ‐shaped amphiphilic block copolymer. The polymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 147–156, 2007  相似文献

A five‐arm star‐shaped poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with terminal bromide groups was used as a macroinitiator for the atom transfer radical polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA), resulting in five‐arm star‐shaped poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) block copolymers. The polymerization proceeded in a controlled way using a copper(I)bromide/pentamethyl diethylenetriamine catalytic system in acetonitrile as solvent. The hydrolysis of the tBA blocks of the amphiphilic star‐shaped PEO‐b‐PtBA block copolymer resulted in dihydrophilic star structures. The encapsulation of the star‐block copolymers and their release properties in acid environment have been followed by UV‐spectroscopy and color changes, using the dye methyl orange as a hydrophilic guest molecule. Characterization of the structures has been done by 1H NMR, size exclusion chromatography, MALDI‐TOF, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n‐butyl methacrylate (n‐BMA) was initiated by a poly(ethylene oxide) chloro telechelic macroinitiator synthesized by esterification of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. The polymerization, carried out in bulk at 90 °C and catalyzed by iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate in the presence of triphenylphosphine ligand (FeCl2 · 4H2O/PPh3), led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock copolymers with MMA or n‐BMA as the A block and PEO as the B block. A kinetic study showed that the polymerization was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration. Moreover, the experimental molecular weights of the block copolymers increased linearly with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution was acceptably narrow at the end of the reaction. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through the adjustment of the content of PEO blocks (PEO content >90% by mass). When the PEO content was small [monomer/macroinitiator molar ratio (M/I) = 300], the block copolymers were water‐insoluble and showed only one glass‐transition temperature. With an increase in the concentration of PEO (M/I = 100 or 50) in the copolymer, two glass transitions were detected, indicating phase separation. The macroinitiator and the corresponding triblock copolymers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, size exclusion chromatography analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydroxy‐telechelic poly(methyl methacrylate)s of molecular weights below 5000 were obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate followed by end‐capping with allyl alcohol via atom transfer radical addition (ATRA). As initiators for the ATRP, monofunctional initiators with an additional hydroxy group in the molecule or bifunctional initiators were employed. The successful synthesis of the hydroxy‐telechelic PMMA was proved by determination of their molecular weight using MALDI‐TOF‐MS. The efficiency of the end‐capping reaction was determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy using the allyl N‐(4‐tolyl)carbamate as end‐capping agent. Block copolymers comprising a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block and a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) block were prepared by ATRP using a macroinitiator on the PEO basis. The dormant species of the macroinitiator consists of the phenyl chloroacetate moiety which shows a high rate of initiation. The successful synthesis of the poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) was proved by 1H NMR spectroscopy; the ratios of EO/MMA repeating units in the feed and the copolymer were nearly equal.  相似文献

Amphiphilic graft copolymer of polystyrene (PS) as backbone and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as branch chain was prepared by Decker-Forster reaction. PEO with Schiff's base end group (PEOs) was obtained by ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) initiated with protected potassium aminoethoxide, and then alkylated with chloromethylated polystyrene (c-PS). A graft copolymer with high grafting efficiency was derived by hydrolysis of the above-mentioned product.  相似文献

Double hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PEO‐b‐PNIPAM) block copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, using a PEO‐based chain transfer agent (PEO‐CTA). The molecular structures of the copolymers were designed to be asymmetric with a short PEO block and long PNIPAM blocks. Temperature‐induced aggregation behavior of the block copolymers in dilute aqueous solutions was systematically investigated by a combination of static and dynamic light scattering. The effects of copolymer composition, concentration (Cp), and heating rate on the size, aggregation number, and morphology of the aggregates formed at temperatures above the LCST were studied. In slow heating processes, the aggregates formed by the copolymer having the longest PNIPAM block, were found to have the same morphology (spherical “crew‐cut” micelles) within the full range of Cp. Nevertheless, for the copolymer having the shortest PNIPAM block, the morphology of the aggregates showed a great dependence on Cp. Elongation of the aggregates from spherical to ellipsoidal or even cylindrical was observed. Moreover, vesicles were observed at the highest Cp investigated. Fast heating leads to different characteristics of the aggregates, including lower sizes and aggregation numbers, higher densities, and different morphologies. Thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms were proposed to interpret these observations, including the competition between PNIPAM intrachain collapse and interchain aggregation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization with activators generated by electron transfer initiating/catalytic system (AGET ATRP) of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was carried out in inverse miniemulsion. Water‐soluble ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and mono‐ and difunctional poly(ethylene oxide)‐based bromoisobutyrate (PEO‐Br) as a macroinitiator were used in the presence of CuBr2/tris[(2‐pyridyl)methyl]amine (TPMA) and CuCl2/TPMA complexes. The use of poly(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) as a polymer surfactant resulted in the formation of stable HEMA cyclohexane inverse dispersion and PHEMA colloidal particles. All polymerizations were well‐controlled, allowing for the preparation of well‐defined PEO‐PHEMA and PHEMA‐PEO‐PHEMA block copolymers with relatively high molecular weight (DP > 200) and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 1.3). These block copolymers self‐assembled to form micellar nanoparticles being 10–20 nm in diameter with uniform size distribution, and aggregation number of ~10 confirmed by atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) block copolymers with a trithiocarbonate group between the blocks were prepared by polymerization of styrene in the presence of a trithiocarbonate reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent connected with PEO. Decomposition of the trithiocarbonate group by UV irradiation was investigated in three different types of solvent: tetrahydrofuran (THF, common solvent for both blocks), cyclohexane/dioxane mixture (selective solvent for the PS block) and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/ethanol mixture (selective solvent for the PEO block). It is found that cleavage of the block copolymers can take place in all these three solvents and the cleavage ratio ranges from 76 to 86%. The micellar morphologies in selective solvents before and after cleavage were examined. It is observed that the size of the micelles is reduced after cleavage and sometimes aggregation of the micelles occurs due to removal of the corona of micelles. It shows that this work provides a facile and general method for synthesis of cleavable block copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 3834–3840, 2010  相似文献

Synthesis of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers carrying a methacyloyl group in one end, and N, N-dimethyl amino, thiophene, styryl and vinyl ether functional groups in the other end was desribed. The general synthetic strategy is based on the living anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide initiated with functional potassium alcoholates, followed by reaction with methacyloyl chloride. These macromonomers were further utilized in various macromolecular architectures through via concurrent or selective thermal free radical, oxidative and photoinitiated free radical and cationic polymerization methods. The use of this synthetic route to prepare graft copolymers possessing completly and perfectly alternating PEO side chains using charge-transfer-complex polymerization was also demonstrated.  相似文献

A series of novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polystyrene (PS), and poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using CuBr/1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as a catalyst system. First, the bromine‐terminated diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PEO‐PS‐Br) was prepared by the ATRP of styrene initiated with the macro‐initiator PEO‐Br, which was obtained from the esterification of PEO and 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. An azobenzene‐containing block of PMMAZO with different molecular weights was then introduced into the diblock copolymer by a second ATRP to synthesize the novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PEO‐PS‐PMMAZO). These block copolymers were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatograph (GPC). Their thermotropic phase behaviors were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). These triblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase over a relatively wide temperature range. At the same time, the photoresponsive properties of these triblock copolymers in chloroform solution were preliminarily studied. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well-defined block copolymer consisting of four-arm poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (four-arm PEO56-b-PDEAEMA74) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The pH-responsive self-assembly behavior was examined by potentiometric titration, surface tensiometry, laser light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy over the course of dissociation by the addition of a base or acid. The apparent hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of the micelle increased from 21 to 56 nm when the degree of protonation of the amine groups was increased from 0 to 0.5 in 0.01 M NaCl solution. In higher concentration NaCl solution, the micelle shrank due to the electrostatic charge screening of the protonated DEAEMA groups. At low pH, the micelles dissociated into unimers.  相似文献

Using novel multihalide compounds based on 4‐tert‐butylcalix[4,6,8]arenes as initiators, molecularly well‐defined polystyrenes (PS) and poly[alkyl‐(meth)acrylates] could be obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). This core‐first approach and therefore the very same initiators also served to derive star block copolymers. Dendrimer‐like architectures based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and PS were prepared upon combination of anionic polymerization for the inner PEO part and ATRP for the outer PS shell.  相似文献

Amphiphilic BuO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐block‐PLA‐OH diblock and MeO‐PEO‐block‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐block‐PLA‐OH triblock copolymers incorporating thermoresponsive poly(ethylene oxide‐stat‐propylene oxide) (PEO‐stat‐PPO) blocks were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of lactide (LA) initiated by macroinitiators formed from treating BuO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH and MeO‐PEO‐block‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH with AlEt3. MeO‐PEO‐block‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH was prepared by coupling MeO‐PEO‐OH and HO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH, followed by chromatographic purification. The cloud points of 0.2% aqueous solutions are between 36 and 46 °C for the diblock copolymers that contain a 50 wt % EO thermoresponsive block and 78 °C for the triblock copolymer that contains a 75 wt % EO thermoresponsive block. Variable temperature 1H NMR spectra recorded on D2O solutions of the diblock copolymers display no PLA resonances below the cloud point and fairly sharp PLA resonances above the cloud point, suggesting that desolvation of the thermoresponsive block increases the miscibility of the two blocks. Preliminary characterization of the micelles formed in aqueous solutions of BuO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐block‐PLA‐OH conducted using laser scanning confocal microscopy and pulsed gradient spin echo NMR point to significant changes in the size of the micellar aggregates as a function of temperature. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The star block copolymers with polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) as side chains and hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) as core were synthesized by combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with the “atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling” (“ATNRC”) reaction. The multiarm PS with bromide end groups originated from the HPG core (HPG‐g‐(PS‐Br)n) was synthesized by ATRP first, and the heterofunctional PEO with α‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy group and ω‐hydroxyl group (TEMPO‐PEO) was prepared by anionic polymerization separately using 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy (HTEMPO) as parents compound. Then ATNRC reaction was conducted between the TEMPO groups in PEO and bromide groups in HPG‐g‐(PS‐Br)n in the presence of CuBr and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA). The obtained star block copolymers and intermediates were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, fourier transform‐infrared in detail. Those results showed that the efficiency of ATNRC in the preparation of multiarm star polymers was satisfactory (>90%) even if the density of coupling cites on HPG was high. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New biodegradable/biocompatible ABC block copolymers, poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(glycidol)‐b‐poly(L ,L ‐lactide) (PEO‐PGly‐PLLA), were synthesized. First, PEO‐b‐poly(1‐ethoxyethylglycidol)‐b‐PLLA was synthesized by a successive anionic ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide, 1‐ethoxyethylglycidyl ether, and L ,L ‐lactide initiated with potassium 2‐methoxyethanolate. In the second step, the 1‐ethoxyethyl blocking groups of 1‐ethoxyethylglycidyl ether were removed at weakly acidic conditions leaving other blocks intact. The resulting copolymers were composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments joined by short polyglycidol blocks with one hydroxyl group in each monomeric unit. These hydroxyl groups may be used for further copolymer transformations. The PEO‐PGly‐PLLA copolymers with a molecular weight of PLLA blocks below 5000 were water‐soluble. Above the critical micellar concentration (ranging from 0.05 to1.0 g/L, depending on the composition of copolymer), copolymers formed macromolecular micelles with a hydrophobic PLLA core and hydrophilic PEO shell. The diameters of the micelles were about 25 nm. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 3750–3760, 2003  相似文献

A procedure for the preparation of new block copolymers composed of a hydrophobic block of polystyrene, a hydrophilic spacer-block of poly(ethylene oxide) and a bioactive block of heparin was investigated. Polystyrene with one amino group per chain was synthesized by free radical oligomerization of styrene in dimethylformamide, using 2-aminoethanethiol as a chain transfer agent. This amino group was used in the coupling reaction with amino-telechelic poly(ethylene oxide) to produce an AB type diblock copolymer with one amino group per polystyrene (PSt)–poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chain. The amino-semitelechelic oligo-styrene was converted into the isocyanate-semitelechelic oligo-styrene using toluene 2,4-diisocyanate and subsequent coupling with H2N–PEO–NH2 afforded AB type block copolymers with terminal amino groups. The coupling of PSt–PEO–NH2 with heparin was performed in a DMF–H2O mixture, first by activating the heparin carboxylic groups with EDC at pH 5.1–5.2 and subsequently reacting the activated carboxylic groups with the amino groups of the PSt–PEO–NH2 at pH 7.5. Depending on the molecular weights of the diblock copolymer used 25–29% w/w heparin was incorporated. These polymers will be further evaluated for their blood-compatibility.  相似文献
