We prepared monodisperse polystyrene microspheres by dispersion polymerization using sodium polyaspartate (PAspNa) as a dispersion stabilizer in an ethanol/water medium. The influence of reaction parameters, i.e., the volume fraction of ethanol in the medium, stabilizer concentration, and the monomer concentration, on the average diameter of the prepared polystyrene microspheres and its distribution were investigated. Polystyrene microspheres were successfully prepared, and the average diameter of the prepared monodisperse polystyrene microspheres was controlled by adjusting the reaction parameters. The zeta potential of the microspheres and the time course of conversion, the particle diameter and its distribution, and particle numbers were also examined. It was found that PAspNa as a dispersion stabilizer provides an environmentally benign process for the preparation of monodisperse polymer microspheres by dispersion polymerization.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles ranging in diameter from 2 to 10 μm were prepared by dispersion polymerization. The effects of various polymerization parameters on the size and monodispersity were systematically investigated. The particle size was found to increase with increasing polymerization temperature, concentration and decomposition rate of the initiator, and solvency of the dispersion medium. It also increased with increasing concentration and molecular weight of the polymeric stabilizer, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). As the monomer concentration was increased from 5 to 20 wt %, a minimum was found in the particle size at a monomer concentration of 10 wt %. A costabilizer was found to be necessary for preparing monodisperse particles at stabilizer concentrations below 2 wt %. A recycling experiment showed that the consumption of PVP was quite small in each cycle and the residual materials in this system could be reused readily. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this study, the preparation of various methacrylic particles with monodisperse size via dispersion polymerization in polar media was discussed. The effect of various polymerization conditions such as polarity of the medium, monomer, stabilizer, and initiator concentration, polymerization temperature, and initiator type on the size and size distribution of these particles was evaluated. The experimental results showed that, with a decrease in the difference between medium solubility parameter (MSP) and polymer solubility parameter (PSP), stabilizer concentration and with an increase in monomer content size of the particles increased and size distribution of them became broader. The obtained results showed that the particle size and size distribution of various polymers were different functions of initiator concentration. It means that, for the production of monodisperse particles, specific amount of initiator is needed for each type of the polymers. Moreover, it was observed that the size and size distribution of the particles with higher polarity were more sensitive to changing the polarity of the medium, and the size distribution of the particles with lower glass transition temperature (T g) is more sensitive to changing the stabilizer concentration which is because of less stability of them. Furthermore, to our surprise, the obtained results showed that, in MSP-PSP of 18.5 MPa0.5, size and size distribution of all types of the particles became equivalent.  相似文献

Summary: Monodisperse polystyrene (PS) microspheres with different sizes were prepared by dispersion polymerization in dispersion media of ethanol/water and isopropayl alcohol/water, respectively. The effect of polarity of the dispersion medium, stabilizer and initiator concentration on the average sizes and size range were evaluated. The results show that monodisperse PS microspheres with different sizes could be prepared in dispersion media of ethanol and isopropyl alcohol/water when appropriate initiator and stabilizer concentrations were employed, and the latter is a more appropriate medium to prepare uniform PS microspheres. It was found that the microsphere sizes reduced with increasing water content in the dispersion medium. Furthermore, in isopropyl alcohol/water dispersions, the average sizes decreased with increasing stabilizer concentration.  相似文献

Photoinitiated dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in a mixture of ethanol and water as dispersion medium in the presence of poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as the steric stabilizer and Darocur 1173 as photoinitiator. 93.7% of conversion was achieved within 30 min of UV irradiation at room temperature, and microspheres with 0.94 μm number–average diameter and 1.04 polydispersity index (PDI) were obtained. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) analysis revealed that only parts of surface of the microspheres were covered by PVP. The particle size decreased from 2.34 to 0.98 μm as the concentration of PVP stabilizer increased from 2 to 15%. Extra stabilizer (higher than 15%) has no effect on the particle size and distribution. Increasing medium polarity or decreasing monomer and photoinitiator concentration resulted in a decrease in the particle size. Solvency of reaction medium toward stabilizer, which affects the adsorption of stabilizer on the particle surface, was shown to be crucial for controlling particle size and uniformity because of the high reaction rate in photoinitiated dispersion polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel monodisperse cationic pH-responsive microgels were successfully prepared by dispersion polymerization in ethanol/water mixture using N,N'-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) as the monomer, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as the steric stabilizer and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as the cross-linker. The effects of various polymerization parameters, such as medium polarity, concentration of cross-linker, concentration of monomer, and concentration and molecular weight of stabilizer on the final diameter and monodispersity of poly(N,N'-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) microgels were systematically studied. The pH-responsive characteristics of PDMAEMA microgels were also investigated. The experimental results showed that these microgels exhibited excellent pH-responsivity and significantly swelled at low pH values. The maximum ratio of volume change of the prepared microgels in response to pH variation was more than 11 times. It was found that the prepared microgels completely aggregated at the isoelectric point (IEP) around pH 6. On the other hand, the microgels were stable in aqueous solution at both low and high pH values. The results can be used for effectively controlled separation of particles.  相似文献

Monodisperse polystyrene particles crosslinked with different concentrations of divinylbenzene were synthesized in the 3.2–9.1 μm size range by dispersion polymerization in an isopropyl alcohol/toluene mixed‐dispersion medium with poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) as a steric stabilizer and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as a radical initiator. The effects of the reaction parameters such as the crosslinking agent concentration, media solvency (controlled by varying the amount of toluene addition), the initiator concentration, and the stabilizer concentration on the particle size and size distribution were investigated with reference particles with a monodisperse size distribution and crosslinked by 1.5 wt % divinylbenzene. The appropriate increase in media solvency was a prerequisite for preparing crosslinked particles without coagulated and/or odd‐shaped particles. The investigation of the effects of the polymerization parameters also shows that only specific sets of conditions produce particles with a monodisperse size distribution. The glass‐transition temperatures of the particles increased with increasing divinylbenzene concentration. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 4368–4377, 2002  相似文献

Highly monodisperse polystyrene microparticles cross-linked with urethane acrylates were produced by dispersion polymerization in ethanol solution in the presence of 2,2′-azobis (isobutyronitrile) initiator, polyvinylpyrrolidone stabilizer, and Aerosol–OT costabilizer. Different from conventional crosslinkers, the urethane acrylates employed as a crosslinker showed an excellent effect on maintaining the monodispersity of polystyrene microparticles even in the moderate crosslinker concentration. This was believed that the urethane acrylate helped forming the monomer-swellable surface of primary particles, because of its structurally long tetramethylene oxide groups in its molecule. However, at high concentration of the urethane acrylate, the rough surface and the coagulum of particles were observed, which was attributed to the seriously decreased solubility of the monomer mixtures in ethanol solution. The solubility of the mixtures of styrene monomer and urethane acrylate in the media had a serious effect on the average particle size and morphology of the final particles. This could be confirmed by the measurement of cloud points and fractional conversions. Received: 21 February 1997 Accepted: 25 May 1998  相似文献

Oxidative polymerization of pyrrole has been studied using FeCl3 or (NH4)2S2O8 (APS) as oxidant, ethylhydroxyethylcellulose (EHEC) as a steric stabilizer and water or aqueous ethanol as the dispersion medium. Transmission electron micrographic images of the particles from the as-prepared dialysed dispersions in aqueous ethanol show small as well as large particles (about a decade larger) when FeCl3 is used as the oxidant but only large particles when APS is used as the oxidant. Small particles are not found when the dispersions are prepared in water, irrespective of the oxidant used. The particle size decreases with an increase in molecular weight of the stabilizer for the same stabilizer concentration. The minimum amount of stabilizer required to support dispersion polymerization decreases upon increasing the alcohol content of the medium.

Abstract

Seed dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of monodisperse PMMA particles was carried out in an aqueous methanol using poly(methacrylic acid) stabilizer. The polymerization using 2. 5 μ. m-sized seed particles gave monodisperse PMMA particles in the diameter up to 4. 9 μm. The solvent composition and monomer concentration greatly affected the polymerization behavior. Under appropriate conditions, monodisperse PMMA particles in the diameter up to 8. 9 μ, m was prepared from 4. 6 μm-sized seed particles. The seed dispersion polymerization of styrene in the presence of the seed particles produced monodisperse PMMA-polystyrene particles in the micron range. The particles were supposed to have a structure consisting of PMMA-core and polystyrene-shell from ESCA analysis.  相似文献

We discuss a dispersion polymerization procedure for preparing monodisperse and micron-sized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles in hexanes with methacryloxypropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane stabilizers. We investigate the effects of the stabilizer molecular weight, stabilizer concentration, and monomer concentration on the particle size and polydispersity. We find that a minimum molecular weight of 10 000 g/mol is necessary to synthesize colloidally stable PMMA dispersions. The particle polydispersity is minimal (=5%) for stabilizer to monomer weight ratios of 0.02 to 0.1, while PMMA particles prepared under conditions outside this range are polydisperse. The particle diameter can be varied from 0.4 to 1.5 µm by appropriate choices of stabilizer and monomer concentrations. Stable PMMA suspensions can be prepared at up to 26.3% solids. The dispersions are stable in most liquid aliphatics, and are monodisperse enough to form ordered domains at high concentration. This single-stage synthesis, requiring only commercially available materials, may be of interest to those seeking a simple way to prepare highly monodisperse non-aqueous dispersions in the micron size range.  相似文献

A thermodynamic model has been proposed for the simulation of monomer partitioning behavior in the dispersion polymerization of styrene in ethanol. The monomer concentration in the polymer particles is very low (20 vol% at 5% conversion) and decreases further as the polymerization proceeds. It is independent of stabilizer concentration but is strongly dependent on initial monomer concentration. The partitio n coefficient ([Mp]/[Mc]) of styrene increases from 0.8 to 1.1 with incresing conversion. There are two polymerization loci in dispersion polymerization, namely the continuous and polymer phases. Competition between solution and heterogeneous polymerization has been observed in this system. The rate of dispersion polymerization is dependent on initial monomer concentration but is independent of initiator concentration at higher conversions. The molecular weight of the polymers produced by this process increases with increasing conversion and decreases with increasing initiator concentration.  相似文献

In this communication, we report the first simple and fast one-step method for synthesizing highly monodisperse micron-size PMMA particles in organic media through dispersion polymerization in the presence of PHSA (a polyhydroxyl-stearic-acid graft PMMA copolymer) as a stabilizer. There are two significant advantages of our method over earlier methods. First, by optimizing the composition of a solvent mixture of hexane and dodecane, we were able to increase the concentration of monomer up to 50-56% and obtain unusually large (up to 10 mum in diameter) PMMA particles. Second, by strictly controlling the nucleation time, we were able to make PMMA particles with a low polydispersity of around 1%, much lower than has ever before been achieved for such large particles. We also report an unusual apparent metastable state in the nucleation stage.  相似文献

Polystyrene microspheres were prepared by dispersion polymerization of styrene in a mixture of ethanol and 2-methoxy ethanol. Surface characterization of the formed particles was performed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and critical surface tension measurements. The influence of different reaction parameters, i.e., monomer concentration, stabilizer type (polyvinylpyrrolidone, copolymers of vinylpyrrolidone and vinylacetate and polyvinylace tate), stabilizer concentration and molecular weight, and initiator type and concentration, on the molecular weight and on the size and size distribution of the formed polystyrene microspheres was investigated. The correlation between the surface composition and wett ability properties of the particles surface and their size and size distribution was also demonstrated. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this work, monodisperse polystyrene (PS) particles were synthesized in ethanol/water medium using sodium salt of styrene sulfonic acid and 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) as ionic comonomer and nonionic initiator, respectively. The polymerization was carried out at low agitation speed, and no stabilizer (or surfactant) was added to the polymerization medium. This polymerization system (stabilizer-free dispersion polymerization) was initiated as a homogeneous solution of monomer, comonomer, medium, and initiator. With the production of free radicals, polymerization developed into a heterogeneous system. The effect of various polymerization conditions on the size and size distribution of the obtained particles was evaluated. The experimental results showed that with an increase in ethanol content, the size of the particles increased while no significant change was observed in particle size distribution. Furthermore, with increasing ionic comonomer content, the size of the particles decreased and their size distribution became broader. Moreover, it was observed that addition of an electrolyte to the polymerization medium also increased the particles’ size and broadened their size distribution. It is noteworthy to point out that the coagulation occurred in higher amounts of electrolyte. Finally, it is concluded that the polar component of Hansen solubility parameter of the polymerization medium affects the particle size and particle size distribution greatly.  相似文献

Monodisperse polystyrene microspheres with diameters of 200–500 nm were prepared by dispersion polymerization with microwave irradiation with poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) as a steric stabilizer and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as a radical initiator in an ethanol/water medium. The morphology, size, and size distribution of the polystyrene microspheres were characterized with transmission electron microscopy and photon correlation spectroscopy, and the formed films of the polystyrene dispersions were characterized with atomic force microscopy. The effects of the monomer concentration, stabilizer concentration, and initiator concentration on the size and size distribution of the polystyrene microspheres were investigated. The polystyrene microspheres prepared by dispersion polymerization with microwave irradiation were smaller, more uniform, and steadier than those obtained with conventional heating. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  Micron-sized monodispersed polystyrene (PS)/poly(n-butyl methacrylate) composite particles were produced as follows. First, 1.77 μm-sized monodispersed PS seed particles produced by dispersion polymerization were dispersed in ethanol/water (1/2, w/w) medium dissolving poly(vinyl alcohol) as a stabilizer. n-Butyl methacrylate (BMA) monomer dissolving benzoyl peroxide initiator was emulsified in ethanol/water (1/2, w/w) solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate as emulsifier with ultrasonic homogenizer, and the BMA monomer emulsion was mixed with the PS seed emulsion. The PS seed particles absorbed with a large amount of BMA (about 150 times weight of the seed particles) for 2 h to about 10 μm in diameter while keeping good monodispersity and BMA droplets disappeared finally. The seeded polymerization was carried out at 70 °C after a certain amount of water was added to depress the redissolving of BMA from the swollen particles into the medium by raising from room temperature to the polymerzation temperature.
