Forward recoil spectrometry is shown to be a useful technique for measuring diffusion of d-polymer chains in h-polymer melts. Concentration profiles of a deuterated diffusing species may be determined with a depth resolution of 80 nm and a sensitivity of 0.1 vol % d-polymer in h-polymer. Consequently diffusion coefficients as small as 10?16 cm2/s can be readily measured. If polymer chains diffuse by a reptation mechanism, the concentration profile ø(x) of diffusing polydisperse polymer should be quite different from øm(x), the Fickian solution, which one obtains for monodisperse polymer. This idea was tested by measuring ø(x) of polydisperse d-polystyrene (d-PS) diffusing into h-PS. The results are in excellent agreement with the ø(x) predicted from the reptation model and the experimentally determined molecular weight distribution.  相似文献

Polymer entanglements lead to complicated topological constraints and interactions between neighboring chains in a dense solution or melt. Entanglements can be treated in a mean field approach, within the famous reptation model, since they effectively confine each individual chain in a tube-like geometry. In polymer networks, due to crosslinks preventing the global reptation and constraint release, entanglements acquire a different topological meaning and have a much stronger effect on the resulting mechanical response. In this article we discuss two different models of rubber elasticity, both utilizing the reptation ideas. First, we apply the classical ideas of reptation statistics to calculate the effective rubber-elastic free energy of an entangled rubbery network. In the second approach, we examine the classical Rouse dynamics of chains with quenched constraints at their ends by crosslinks, and along the primitive path by entanglements. We then proceed to average a microscopic stress tensor for the network system and present it in a manageable form in the equilibrium t → ∞ limit. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of compressibility and hydrostatic pressure in a sample with open boundaries. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Extensive molecular-dynamics simulations have been performed to study the effect of chain conformational rigidity, controlled by bending and torsion potentials, on self-diffusion in polymer melts. The polymer model employs a novel torsion potential that avoids computational singularities without the need to impose rigid constraints on the bending angles. Two power laws are traditionally used to characterize the dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient on polymer length: D proportional to N(-nu) with nu=1 for NNe (reptation regime), Ne being the entanglement length. Our simulations, at constant temperature and density, up to N=250 reveal that, as the chain rigidity increases, the exponent nu gradually increases towards nu=2.0 for NNe. The value of Ne is slightly increased from 70 for flexible chains, up to the point where the crossover becomes undefined. This behavior is confirmed also by an analysis of the bead mean-square displacement. Subsequent investigations of the Rouse modes, dynamical structure factor, and chain trajectories indicate that the pre-reptation regime, for short stiff chains, is a modified Rouse regime rather than reptation.  相似文献

Summary: The paper deals with the question whether the tube/reptation model of polymer chain dynamics is compatible with general laws of statistical physics. Based on a relation between the mean squared fluctuation of the number of segments in a given volume element and the isothermal compressibility of the polymer system, it follows straightforwardly that the tube/reptation model predicts fluctuations larger than permitted by thermodynamics on the time scale t ≳ τR, where τR is the Rouse relaxation time.  相似文献

It is known that topological restraints by “chain entanglements” severely affect chain dynamics in polymer melts. In this field-cycling NMR relaxometry and fringe-field NMR diffusometry study, melts of linear polymers in bulk and confined to pores in a solid matrix are compared. The diameter of the pore channels was 10 nm. It is shown that the dynamics of chains in bulk dramatically deviate from those observed under pore constraints. In the latter case, one of the most indicative signatures of the reptation model is verified 28 years after its prediction by de Gennes: The frequency and molecular mass dependencies of the spin-lattice relaxation time obey the power law T!M0 v3/4 on a time scale shorter than the longest Rouse relaxation time τR. The mean squared segment displacement in the pores was also found to be compatible to the reptation law < r2>∝ M−1/2t1/2 predicted for τR < t < τd, where τd is the so-called disengagement time. Contrary to these findings, bulk melts of entangled polymers show frequency and molecular mass dependencies significantly different from what one expects on the basis of the reptation model. The data can however be described with the aid of the renormalized Rouse theory.  相似文献

The dynamics of entangled polymeric chains in a polymer filled with nanoparticles is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations of a model system. The primary objective is to study to what extent the reptation of polymers not in direct contact with fillers is modified with respect to the neat material. To this end, two systems are considered: A regular filled material in which the filler-polymer affinity is controlled, and a system in which the beads in contact with the filler at the beginning of the production phase of the simulation are tethered to the filler surface. This second system represents the limit case of long polymer-filler attachment time. In this case attention is focused on the free chains of the melt. The dynamics in the two models is different. In the filled system uniform slowing down for all Rouse modes is observed. The effect varies monotonically with the filler-polymer affinity. Up to saturation, this behavior may be captured by usual models with an effective, affinity-dependent, friction coefficient. In the system with grafted chains, the free chain Rouse dynamics is identical to that in the neat material, except for the longest modes which are significantly slowed down. More interestingly, the dynamics of the free chains depends in a nonmonotonic way on the polymer-filler affinity, although the free chains do not come in direct contact with the filler. This effect is due to small changes in the structure of the polydisperse brush upon modification of the affinity. Specifically, the density of the brush and the amount of interpenetration of free and grafted chains depend on the filler-polymer affinity. The use of a reptation model with modified tube diameter to capture this behavior is discussed.  相似文献

Reptational dynamics of bulk polymer chains on a time scale between the Rouse mode relaxation time and the so-called disengagement time is not compatible with the basic thermodynamic law of fluctuations of the number of segments in a given volume. On the other hand, experimental field-cycling NMR relaxometry data of perfluoropolyether melts confined in Vycor, a porous silica glass of nominal pore dimension of 4 nm, closely display the predicted signatures for the molecular weight and frequency dependences of the spin-lattice relaxation time in this particular limit, namely T1 proportional M-1/2nu1/2. It is shown that this contradiction is an apparent one. In this paper a formalism is developed suggesting cooperative chain dynamics under nanoscopic pore confinements. The result is a cooperative reptational displacement phenomenon reducing the root-mean-squared displacement rate correspondingly but showing the same characteristic dependences as the ordinary reptation model. The tube diameter effective for cooperative reptation is estimated on this basis for the sample system under consideration and is found to be of the same order of magnitude as the nominal pore diameter of Vycor.  相似文献

We calculate the elastic scattering of a long chain in a polymer melt during the process of relaxation after a sudden deformation, i.e., the return to equilibrium with time, while the deformed shape is maintained. The scattering thus depends on the duration t of the relaxation, as well as on the scattering vector, and is a physical quantity characteristic of the dynamics of long chains. The reptation model of de Gennes is used as developed for deformed melts by Doi and Edwards: the chain is confined by other chains in a tube, from which disengagement by the ends is the only way of renewing its configuration. The tube diameter is taken as a parameter. We give both an analytic form and numerical evaluations. On comparison with calculations based on the Rouse model, in which the chain is assumed to be free in a viscous medium, it is seen that the experimental data (given elsewhere) should enable one to distinguish between the two models.  相似文献

Using the neutron spin echo spectroscopy, the internal segmental diffusion of chain molecules in polymer melts and concentrated solutions was studied. These investigations show that beyond a characteristic length dt and after a cross over time τe(dt) the segmental diffusion of the single chains is strongly impeded and deviates from the Rouse dynamics. dt is polymer specific and depends on the temperature as well as on the polymer concentration. Within the framework of the reptation concept, where dt is identified with the mean distance between intermolecular entanglements or with the tube diameter, the microscopically determined dt-values agree quite well with those derived from related macroscopic measurements of the plateau modulus. A similar good agreement is also found with respect to the segmental friction coefficients obtained either from the Rouse regime of the NSE spectra or from Theological data of corresponding short chain systems, where entanglements are not yet effective.  相似文献

The translational motion of polymers is a complex process and has a big impact on polymer structure and chemical reactivity. The process can be described by the segment velocity autocorrelation function or its diffusion spectrum, which exhibit several characteristic features depending on the observational time scale—from the Brownian delta function on a large time scale, to complex details in a very short range. Several stepwise, more-complex models of translational dynamics thus exist—from the Rouse regime over reptation motion to a combination of reptation and tube-Rouse motion. Accordingly, different methods of measurement are applicable, from neutron scattering for very short times to optical methods for very long times. In the intermediate regime, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is applicable—for microseconds, relaxometry, and for milliseconds, diffusometry. We used a variation of the established diffusometric method of pulsed gradient spin-echo NMR to measure the diffusion spectrum of a linear polyethylene melt by varying the gradient pulse width. We were able to determine the characteristic relaxation time of the first mode of the tube-Rouse motion. This result is a deviation from a Rouse model of polymer chain displacement at the crossover from a square-root to linear time dependence, indicating a new long-term diffusion regime in which the dynamics of the tube are also described by the Rouse model.  相似文献

We perform molecular-dynamics simulations for polymer melts of the coarse-grained poly(vinyl alcohol) model that crystallizes upon slow cooling. To establish the properties of its high temperature, liquid state as a reference point, we characterize in detail the structural features of equilibrated polymer melts with chain lengths 5 ≤ N ≤ 1000 at a temperature slightly above their crystallization temperature. We find that the conformations of sufficiently long polymers with N > 50 obey essentially the Flory's ideality hypothesis. The chain length dependence of the end-to-end distance and the gyration radius follow the scaling predictions of ideal chains and the probability distributions of the end-to-end distance, and form factors are in good agreement with those of ideal chains. The intrachain correlations reveal evidences for incomplete screening of self-interactions. However, the observed deviations are small. Our results rule out any preordering or mesophase structure formation that are proposed as precursors of polymer crystallization in the melt. Moreover, we characterize in detail primitive paths of long entangled polymer melts and we examine scaling predictions of Rouse and the reptation theory for the mean squared displacement of monomers and polymers center of mass. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A detailed comparison is made between the experiment, prior simulations by other groups, and our simulation based on a newly designed dynamic Monte Carlo algorithm, on the dynamics of polyethylene (PE) melts. The new algorithm, namely, noncross random two-bead move has been developed on a high coordination lattice (the 2nnd lattice) for studying the dynamics of realistic polymers. The chain length (molecular weight) in our simulation ranges from C40 (562 Da) to C324 (4538 Da). The effects of finite chain length have been confirmed and significant non-Gaussian statistics evidently results in nonstandard static and dynamic properties of short PE chains. The diffusion coefficients scale with molecular weight (M) to the −1.7 power for short chains and −2.2 for longer chains, which coincides very well with experimental results. No pure Rouse scaling in diffusion has been observed. The transitional molecular weight to the entanglement regime is around 1500 Da. The detailed mean square displacements of middle bead (g1) are presented for several chain lengths. The reptation-like slowdown can be clearly observed only above M ∼ 2400 Da. The slope 0.25 predicted by the theory for the intermediate regime is missing; instead a slope close to 0.4 appears, indicating that additional relaxation mechanism exists in this transitional region. The relaxation times extracted by fitting the autocorrelation function of end-to-end vectors with reptation model scale with M to 2.5 for long chains, which seemingly conflicts with the scaling of diffusion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present an original method that allows the monitoring of the interdiffusion process between two miscible polymers. This acoustical method is nondestructive, and does not need any chain marking. It is based on the variations of the angular reflection coefficient R(θ) measured at fixed frequency, caused by the ultrasonic parameters modifications in the interphase during the diffusion process. We applied it to the interdiffusion between two polydimethylsiloxanes A and B of very different molecular weights. The evolution of R(θ) was also computed using successively the slow and the fast theories of diffusion, after calculation of the concentration profiles. The adjustment of the theoretical reflection spectra given by the slow theory on the experimental spectra allowed us to find the value the interdiffusion coefficient D0, which is characteristic of the system. This value is very near the value determined from the molecular dynamics laws (Rouse, reptation, Stokes-Einstein). But in the studied time domain, the fast theory accounts for the experimental results as well as the slow theory. Finally, we discuss the precision of the method and the means to improve it.  相似文献

The bead-spring model for star chains (Rouse–Ham model) is a fundamental model for the polymer dynamics. Despite the importance of this model, its dynamics under the stress-controlled condition was not analyzed so far. For completeness of the model, the equation of motion of the Rouse–Ham chain was solved to derive an analytical expression of the orientation function S(n,t) for the stress-controlled creep process. This expression indicated that the segments near the free end of the star arm exhibit overshoot of their orientational anisotropy to compensate for the slow growth of the anisotropy near the branching point and that the distribution of the anisotropy along the arm contour becomes more heterogeneous with increasing arm number f. This correlation/interplay of the segments at different locations along the arm, not seen under the strain-controlled condition, is a natural consequence of the constant-stress requirement during the creep process. The corresponding interplay was noted also for respective Rouse–Ham eigenmodes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 3501–3517, 2006  相似文献

Both the Rouse and reptation model predict that the dynamics of a polymer melt scale inversely proportional with the Langevin friction coefficient xi. Mesoscale Brownian dynamics simulations of polyethylene validate these scaling predictions, providing the reptational friction xi(R)=xi+xi(C) is used, where xi(C) reflects the fundamental difference between a deterministic and a stochastic propagator even in the limit of xi to zero. The simulations have been performed with Langevin background friction and with pairwise friction, as in dissipative particle dynamics. Both simulation methods lead to equal scaling behavior with xi(C) having almost the same value in both cases. The scaling is tested for the diffusion g(t), the shear relaxation modulus G(t), and the Rouse mode autocorrelations of melts of C(120)H(242), C(400)H(802), and C(1000)H(2002). The derived dynamical scaling procedure is very useful to reduce run-time in mesoscale computer simulations, especially if pairwise friction is applied.  相似文献

This paper discusses topological and geometrical aspects of reptation theory which are common to all versions of reptation theory. These are: the postulated existence of the tube, the functional relationship between the tube diameter a and the polymer/monomer density p, the crossover from the Rouse to reptation regime. Statistical mechanics of the geometrically confined polymer chain is reanalyzed by careful separation of the diffusive motion of the chain into the longitudinal and transversal parts. Connection between old results and the new formalism is established. It is shown that the longitudinal motion resembles that known for directed polymers. This provides a source of the effective rigidification of the reptating chain's backbone thus facilitating the viscosity exponent to be larger than 3. The transversal motion is also reanalyzed. It is shown that the diffusion on the Bethe lattice used before to describe the transversal (planar) motion (conformational statistics) of the trapped chain is actually the diffusion on the universal covering of the corresponding Riemannian surface. This fact allows to reanalyze the tube stability using topological arguments. Detailed numerical comparison of the obtained new theoretical results with available experimental and Monte Carlo data is provided. Very good agreement between theory and experiment is found. It is also shown that the emerging physical picture of the tube destruction is isomorphic to that which was developed earlier with the help of the quantum Hall effect analogy (J. Phys. I 4 , 843 (1994)). Remarkable connections between the reptation theory and the theory of quantum chaotic/mesoscopic systems are established thus making the reptation theory part of the more general theory of quantum chaotic systems.  相似文献

Relaxation dynamics of salt‐free, aqueous solutions of sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (NaPSS) were investigated by mechanical rheometry and flow birefringence measurements. Two semidilute concentration regimes were studied in detail for a range of polymer molecular weights. At solution concentrations c < 10 mg mL, limiting shear viscosity η0 was found to scale with molecular weight and concentration as η0c0.5Mw over nearly two decades in concentration. At higher solution concentrations, c > 10 mg mL, a change in viscosity scaling was observed η0 ∼ c1.5M, consistent with a change from simple Rouse dynamics for unentangled polyions to near‐perfect reptation dynamics for entangled chains. Characteristic relaxation times τ deduced from shear stress and birefringence relaxation measurements following start‐up of steady shearing at high rates reveal very different physics. For c < 10 mg mL, both methods yield τ ∼ c−0.42M and τ ∼ c0M for c > 10 mg mL. Curiously, the concentration scalings seen in both regimes are consistent with theoretical expectations for salt‐free polyelectrolyte solutions undergoing Rouse and reptation dynamics, respectively, but the molecular weight scalings are not. Based on earlier light scattering studies using salt‐free NaPSS solutions, we contend that the unusual relaxation behavior is likely due to aggregation and/or coupled polyion diffusion. Simultaneous stress and birefringence measurements suggest that in concentrated solution, NaPSS aggregates are likely well permeated by solvent, supporting a loose collective of aggregated chains rather than the dense polymer aggregates previously supposed. Nonetheless, polyion aggregates of either variety cannot account for the inverse dependence of relaxation time on polymer molecular weight for c < 10 mg mL. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Recent experiments designed to probe polymer transport in the bulk and in the vicinity of surfaces have examined the interdiffusion of multilayer sandwiches of isotopically labeled polymers. The measured time dependent concentration profiles normal to the surface are typically fit to Fick's law, with a single fitting parameter, the mutual binary diffusion coefficient (MBDC). The resulting MBDCs are found to vary over a broad range of film thicknesses and time, with the time dependence being viewed as a unique signature of the reptation mechanism of long chain motion, and the thickness dependence being attributed to the slowing down of chain dynamics near surfaces. Since the experiments are conducted at finite concentration, the MBDC, which is a product of the bare mobility and the concentration derivative of the chemical potential, could be dominated by the time and thickness dependence of this second term (which is ignored in Fick's law). To quantify this conjecture we consider the more rigorous Cahn formulation of the diffusion problem in terms of chemical potential gradients. We use square gradient theory to evaluate chemical potentials, and fit the resulting time dependent concentration profiles to the analytical solution of Fick's law. By thus mimicking the experimental analysis we find that the apparent MBDCs vary with time as t(-1/2) at short times, in good agreement with existing experiments. We show that this time dependence reflects the system's desire to minimize concentration gradients, a fact ignored in Fick's law. Since these arguments make no reference to the mechanism of chain motion, we argue that the time dependence of MBDC derived from interdiffusion experiments does not provide unequivocal support for the reptation mechanism of long chain transport. The MBDC values, which also vary with the degree of confinement, are predicted to increase with decreasing thickness for model parameters corresponding to experimental systems. In contrast, since the experimental fits yield an opposite trend, we suggest that the bare mobility of the chains decreases strongly with decreasing thickness. These findings strongly support the idea that the chains are "pinned" irreversibly to the surfaces, in good agreement with other, independent experiments.  相似文献

This work investigates the effects of the excluded volume and especially those of the chain stiffness on the structural and dynamical properties of a model polymer chain. The theoretical framework is the same as in the recent works by Steinhauser et al.,where a Rouse approach is adopted. Our model differs in that our chains have a finite average bending angle. As in the works by Steinhauser et al.,Langevin dynamic simulations were performed without hydrodynamic interactions.Whereas this doesn’t impact the static properties we obtain,it also allows us to compare our results on dynamic properties to those predicted by Rouse theory, where hydrodynamic interactions are also neglected. Our results show that the structural properties are very sensitive to the chain stiffness, whereas the dynamic scaling laws remain the same as those by Rouse theory, with the prefactor depending on the persistence length.  相似文献

A brief review is given of applications of Monte Carlo simulations to study the dynamical properties of coarse-grained models of polymer melts, emphasizing the crossover from the Rouse model toward reptation, and the glass transition. The extent to which Monte Carlo algorithms can mimic the actual chain dynamics is critically examined, and the need for the use of coarse-grained rather than fully atomistic models for such simulations is explained. It is shown that various lattice and continuum models yield qualitatively similar results, and the behavior agrees with the findings of corresponding molecular dynamics simulations and experiments, where available. It is argued that these simulations significantly enhance our understanding of the theoretical concepts on the dynamics of dense macromolecular systems. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
