Water-soluble ABC triblock copolymers of methyl vinyl ether (MVE), ethyl vinyl ether (EVE), and methyl tri(ethylene glycol) vinyl ether (MTEGVE) of various block sequences and carrying 20 monomer units in each block were synthesized by living cationic polymerization. In addition to the triblocks, one AB diblock, one BA diblock, and one statistical copolymer of MVE and MTEGVE carrying 20 units of each type of monomer were synthesized as controls. Moreover, three homopolymers each carrying 20 units of MVE and end groups of varying hydrophobicity were synthesized using three different initiators. The molecular weights and molecular weight distributions of all the polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The number average degrees of polymerization (DPns) and composition of all the polymers were calculated by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. The molecular weights and degrees of polymerization corresponded to the values expected from the monomer/initiator ratios. The calculated polydispersities were reasonably narrow at 1.3. Aqueous GPC studies at room temperature on the triblock copolymers showed that the polymers exist as isolated chains (unimers) in solution but they tend to assemble and form micelles in the presence of a sufficiently high salt concentration apparently due to the insolubility of the EVE units under the latter conditions. Triblocks with a different block sequence exhibited a different susceptibility to salt-induced micellization, as indicated by the retention volume of the micelles and the relative micelle/unimer peak areas. Similarly, the cloud points of the triblock copolymers covered a relatively wide temperature range from 56 to 72°C. These differences in micellization and cloud points suggest a profound effect of the location of the hydrophilic MTEGVE block on copolymer association. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Water-soluble amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized by the living cationic polymerization of methyl vinyl ether (hydrophilic block) and its subsequent termination with n-alcohols of chain lengths varying from one to eight, and three n-alkyl carboxylic acids with 10, 12, and 18 carbon atoms. Additionally, water and ethylene glycol were tested as terminating agents. The extent of the functionalization was determined using 1H NMR spectroscopy. The cloud points of 1% w/w aqueous solutions of the polymers as determined by turbidimetry decreased from 32 to 21°C as the number of carbon atoms of the terminating agent increased. Aqueous GPC revealed micellization of the stearic acid-terminated block copolymer, while the other block copolymers existed mainly as unimers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. A Polym. ABA‐type triblock copolymers and AB‐type star diblock copolymers with poly(2‐adamantyl vinyl ether) [poly(2‐AdVE)] hard outer segments and poly(n‐butyl vinyl ether) [poly(NBVE)] soft inner segments were synthesized by sequential living cationic copolymerization. Although both the two polymer segments were composed solely of poly(vinyl ether) backbones and hydrocarbon side chains, they were segregated into microphase‐separated structure, so that the block copolymers formed thermoplastic elastomers. Both the ABA‐type triblock copolymers and the AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited rubber elasticity over wide temperature range. For example, the ABA‐type triblock copolymers showed rubber elasticity from about ?53 °C to about 165 °C and the AB‐type star diblock copolymer did from about ?47 °C to 183 °C with a similar composition of poly(2‐AdVE) and poly(NBVE) segments in the dynamic mechanical analysis. The AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited higher tensile strength and elongation at break than the ABA‐type triblock copolymers. The thermal decomposition temperatures of both the block copolymers were as high as 321–331 °C, indicating their high thermal stability. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers consisting of a multibranched polymethacrylate segment with densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and a poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segment were synthesized by a combination of living cationic polymerization and RAFT polymerization. A macromonomer having both a poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] backbone and a terminal methacryloyl group was synthesized by living cationic polymerization. The sequential RAFT copolymerizations of the macromonomer and N‐isopropylacrylamide in this order were performed in aqueous media employing 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate as a chain transfer agent and 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) as an initiator. The obtained diblock copolymers possessed relatively narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled molecular weights. The thermoresponsive properties of these polymers were investigated. Upon heating, the aqueous solutions of the diblock copolymers exhibited two‐stage thermoresponsive properties denoted by the appearance of two cloud points, indicating that the densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and the poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segments independently responded to temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A method for the synthesis of well-defined poly(alkyl vinyl ether–2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymers with hydrolytically stable block linkages has been developed. Monofunctional poly(alkyl vinyl ether) oligomers with nearly Poisson molecular weight distributions were prepared via a living cationic polymerization method using chloroethyl vinyl ether together with HI/ZnI2 as the initiating system and lithium borohydride as the termination reagent. Using the resultant chloroethyl ether functional oligomers in combination with sodium iodide as macroinitiators, 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline was polymerized in chlorobenzene/NMP to afford diblock copolymers. A series of poly(methyl vinyl ether–2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock materials were found to have polydispersities of ≈ 1.3–1.4 and are microphase separated as indicated by two Tg's in their DSC thermograms. These copolymers are presently being used as model materials to study fundamental parameters important for steric stabilization of dispersions in polar media. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The ABA‐type triblock copolymers consisting of poly(2‐adamantyl vinyl ether) [poly(2‐AdVE)] as outer hard segments and poly(6‐acetoxyhexyl vinyl ether) [poly(AcHVE)], poly(6‐hydroxyhexyl vinyl ether) [poly(HHVE)], or poly(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether) [poly(MOEOVE)] as inner soft segments were synthesized by sequential living cationic polymerization. Despite the presence of polar functional groups such as ester, hydroxyl, and oxyethylene units in their soft segments, the block copolymers formed elastomeric films. The thermal and mechanical properties and morphology of the block copolymers showed that the two polymer segments of these triblock copolymers were segregated into microphase‐separated structure. Effect of the functional groups in the soft segments on gas permeability was investigated as one of the characteristics of the new functional thermoplastic elastomers composed solely of poly(vinyl ether) backbones. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermosensitive homopolymers and copolymers with hydroxy groups were synthesized via the living cationic polymerization of Si‐containing vinyl ethers. The cationic homopolymerization and copolymerization of five vinyl ethers with silyloxy groups, each with a different spacer length, were examined with a cationogen/Et1.5AlCl1.5 initiating system in the presence of an added base. When an appropriate base was added, the living cationic polymerization of Si‐containing monomers became feasible, giving polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions and various block copolymers. Subsequent desilylation gave well‐defined polyalcohols, in both water‐soluble and water‐insoluble forms. One of these polyalcohols, poly(4‐hydroxybutyl vinyl ether), underwent lower‐critical‐solution‐temperature‐type thermally induced phase separation in water at a critical temperature (TPS) of 42 °C. This phase separation was quite sensitive and reversible on heating and cooling. The phase separation also occurred sensitively with random copolymers of thermosensitive and hydrophilic or hydrophobic units, the TPS values of which in water could be controlled by the monomer feed ratio. The thermal responsiveness of this polyalcohol unit made it possible to prepare novel thermosensitive block and random copolymers consisting solely of alcohol units. One example prepared in this study was a 20 wt % aqueous solution of a diblock copolymer consisting of thermosensitive poly(4‐hydroxybutyl vinyl ether) and water‐soluble poly(2‐hydroxyethyl vinyl ether) segments, which transformed into a physical gel above 42 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Linear and crosslinked copolymers of a vinyl ether of ethylene glycol (2-hydroxyethyl vinyl ether, ( 1 )) and butyl vinyl ether ( 2 ) are synthesized by α-irradiation polymerization. It is shown that the linear copolymers exhibit a phase separation phenomenon in dependence of the temperature due to the destruction of hydrogen bonds and the enhancement of hydrophobic interaction in aqueous solution. The processes of reversible swelling or shrinking upon temperature change are demonstrated for polymer networks.  相似文献

Amphiphilic diblock copolymers were prepared by the living cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers in the presence of added bases, and their selective solvent‐induced physical gelation behavior was investigated. The block copolymerization of 2‐phenoxyethyl vinyl ether (PhOVE) and 2‐methoxyethyl vinyl ether (MOVE) was carried out in the presence of ethyl acetate with Et1.5AlCl1.5 in toluene at 0 °C. Despite the rate difference, diblock copolymers with a very narrow molecular weight distribution were obtained, quantitatively. By adding the selective solvent, water, to the acetone solution of the diblock copolymer, PhOVE200b‐MOVE400, physical gelation occurred suddenly and the system ceased to flow, maintaining transparency. Viscoelastic measurements and transmission electron microscopic observations were performed to examine the characteristic gelation behavior and structure of the obtained gels. Various gelation conditions and physical gelation by other amphiphilic block copolymers were also designed on the basis of the solubility of each block segment. Further, new forms of physical gelation, accompanied by the solubilization of immiscible organic compounds, were achieved using similar diblock copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  The complex formation reactions of poly(vinyl ether of diethylene glycol) as well as vinyl ether of diethylene glycol–vinyl butyl ether copolymers with poly(acrylic acid) have been studied in aqueous and alcohol solutions. The formation of interpolymer complexes which were stabilized by hydrogen bonds was shown. The effects of molecular weight of poly(acrylic acid) and the nature of the nonionic polymer on the composition and stability of interpolymer complexes were clarified. The critical pH values of complexation were determined for different systems with various molecular weights and hydrophobic–hydrophilic balances. The stability of the interpolymer complexes formed in aqueous and alcohol solutions with respect to dimethylformamide addition was evaluated. The role of hydrophobic interactions and the presence of active groups on stability of the interpolymer complexes is discussed. Received: 23 July 2001 Accepted: 27 September 2001  相似文献

Sulfonated fluorinated multiblock copolymers based on high performance polymers were synthesized and evaluated for use as proton exchange membranes (PEMs). The multiblock copolymers consist of fully disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) and partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether ketone) as hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, respectively. Synthesis of the multiblock copolymers was achieved by a condensation coupling reaction between controlled molecular weight hydrophilic and hydrophobic oligomers. The coupling reaction could be conducted at relatively low temperatures (e.g., 105 °C) by utilizing highly reactive hexafluorobenzene (HFB) as a linkage group. The low coupling reaction temperature could prevent a possible trans‐etherification, which can randomize the hydrophilic‐hydrophobic sequences. Tough ductile membranes were prepared by solution casting and their membrane properties were evaluated. With similar ion exchange capacities (IECs), proton conductivity and water uptake were strongly influenced by the hydrophilic and hydrophobic block sequence lengths. Conductivity and water uptake increased with increasing block length by developing nanophase separated morphologies. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments revealed that the connectivity of the hydrophilic segments was enhanced by increasing the block length. The systematic synthesis and characterization of the copolymers are reported. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 214–222, 2010  相似文献

A range of hydrophilic poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE) polymers was synthesized by living cationic polymerization of methyl vinyl ether (MVE), having different hydrophilic or hydrophobic chain‐end functionalities. The dissimilar end‐groups were either introduced by end‐capping of the growing polymer chain with LiBH4, methanol, and water or by functional initiation with 2‐bromo‐(3,3‐diethoxy‐propyl)‐2‐methylpropanoate. The synthesized PMVEs were characterized by 1H NMR, size exclusion chromatography, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight, displaying a narrow polydispersity. Modulated temperature DSC was applied to study the influence of the nature of the end‐groups on the solubility behavior of PMVE in water. Terminal‐modification with a hydroxyl function improves the solubility, whereas a Br‐containing end‐group causes the polymer to be insoluble in water at room temperature; however, the special type III lower critical solution temperature demixing behavior being maintained. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Anionic and reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations were combined for the preparation of high molecular weight (MW) amphiphilic diblock copolymers based on the hydrophobic styrene (Sty) and the more polar 2‐vinyl pyridine (2VPy) or 4‐vinyl pyridine (4VPy). In particular, four amphiphilic Sty‐VPy diblock copolymers with MWs up to 271,000 g mol–1 were prepared. For the polymer synthesis, first, living anionic polymerization of Sty using sec‐butyl‐lithium as initiator in tetrahydrofuran at ?70 °C, followed by termination with ethylene oxide were employed for the preparation of OH‐functionalized homopolyStys. Subsequently, a modification of the OH‐terminal group was performed by the attachment of a 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate chain transfer agent (CTA) group, giving a polySty macroRAFT CTA, which was extended with 2VPy or 4VPy units using RAFT polymerization. Thus, the prepared diblock copolymers comprised a first block which was near‐monodisperse in size, and a second more heterogeneous block. All diblock copolymers were characterized in terms of their MWs and compositions by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively, giving results close to the theoretically expected values. Films cast from chloroform solutions of the diblock copolymers were investigated in terms of their bulk morphologies using transmission electron microscopy, which indicated that the minority block consistently formed the discontinuous microphase, spherical or cylindrical. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic hydrogels of copolymers of the vinyl ether of ethylene glycol and vinyl isobutyl ether were synthesized by -radiation-induced free radical polymerization. Hydrogels with certain copolymer compositions showed thermo-sensitive behavior in aqueous solutions. The swelling behavior of the hydrogels in cetylpyridinium bromide aqueous solution was studied. Increased swelling of the hydrogels was observed in the surfactant solutions. The increased swelling was more prominent for the hydrogels with a higher content of hydrophobic moiety in the copolymer composition, and with higher surfactant concentration. The reason for this phenomenon is discussed. Treatment of some hydrogels in the surfactant solutions resulted in higher swelling ability in distilled water with distinct thermo-induced contraction over a narrow temperature interval.  相似文献

A new and general design strategy is presented for amphiphilic block copolymers whose micellar aggregates can be dissociated by light. A diblock copolymer composed of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and a hydrophobic polymethacrylate bearing pyrene pendant groups (PPy) was synthesized using ATRP. Upon UV light irradiation of polymer micellar solutions, the photosolvolysis of pyrene moieties results in their detachment from the polymer and converts the hydrophobic PPy block into hydrophilic poly(methacrylic acid). This effect leads to complete dissociation of polymer micelles.  相似文献

A series of amphiphilic polyisobutylene-block-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PIB-b-PVA) copolymers of constant PIB and varying PVA block length was synthesized by living carbocationic polymerization and their solution behavior was studied. The synthesis involved the preparation of polyisobutylene-b-poly(tert.-butyl vinyl ether) followed by hydrolysis with hydrogen bromide. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H-NMR, and MALDI-TOF MS methods. The micellization behavior of the copolymers was investigated in aqueous media by direct dissolution and dialysis using static and dynamic light scattering. The critical micelle concentration, micelle size, aggregation number, and micelle shape were determined. The ability of the aggregates as drug carrying nanodevices was also investigated by doping them with indomethacin. UV-Vis measurements showed that the solubility of indomethacine increased significantly. Our findings suggest that the solubility is largely dependent upon the block segment ratios.  相似文献

This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of new, functionalized poly(alkyl vinyl ether) oligomers, and block copolymers containing poly(alkyl vinyl ether) and poly(methyl methacrylate). Using the HI/ZnI2 initiating system in nonpolar solvents (hexane, toluene) at −20°C, both monofunctional and difunctional poly(alkyl vinyl ether) oligomers of predicted molecular weights precisely terminated with aldehyde, primary hydroxyl and ester endgroups have been prepared. Novel diblock copolymers comprised of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(butyl vinyl ether) have also been synthesized using a combination of living cationic and living group transfer polymerization.  相似文献

Micellization behavior of amphiphilic diblock copolymers with strong acid groups, poly(hydrogenated isoprene)-block-poly(styrenesulfonate), was investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We have reported previously (Kaewsaiha, P.; Matsumoto, K.; Matsuoka, H. Langmuir 2005, 21, 9938) that this strongly ionic amphiphilic diblock copolymer shows almost no surface activity but forms micelles in water. In this study, the size, shape, and internal structures of the micelles formed by these unique copolymers in aqueous solution were duly investigated. The SANS data were well described by the theoretical form factor of a core-shell model and the Pedersen core-corona model. The micellar shape strongly depends on the hydrophobic chain length of the block copolymer. The polymer with the shortest hydrophobic chain was suggested to form spherical micelles, whereas the scattering curves of the longer hydrophobic chain polymers showed a q-1 dependence, reflecting the formation of rodlike micelles. Furthermore, the addition of salt at high concentration also induced the sphere-to-rod transition in micellar shape as a result of the shielding effect of electrostatic repulsion. The corona thickness was almost constant up to the critical salt concentration (around 0.2 M) and then decreased with further increases in salt concentration, which is in qualitatively agreement with existing theories. The spherical/rodlike micelle ratio was also constant up to the critical salt concentration and then decreased. The micelle size and shape of this unique polymer could be described by the common concept of the packing parameter, but the anomalously stable nature of the micelle (up to 1 M NaCl) is a special characteristic.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) triblock and diblock amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized from poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether, respectively. The hydroxyl groups of PEG readily react with 2-(1-octadecenyl) succinic anhydride (OSA) at 140 °C through ring-opening reaction of the succinic anhydride. Both the PEG-OSA diblock and triblock copolymers are produced without use of any solvent or catalyst. The molecular structure of the copolymers was characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, and the thermal properties by DSC. The behavior of the copolymers in selective and nonselective solvents was studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy in deuterium oxide and d-chloroform. The aggregation of the polymers in water was studied with a particle size analyzer and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) in bright field mode. The results show that the hydrophobic C18 chain with intramolecular succinic anhydride linker can be attached to the hydrophilic PEG chain, an ester bond forming between the blocks. The copolymers exhibit flexible, liquid-like hydrophobic blocks even in water, which is a nonsolvent for OSA. PEG-OSA block copolymers self-organize in water, forming micellar polymer aggregates in nanoscale.  相似文献

Langevin dynamics simulations are performed on linear-dendritic diblock copolymers containing bead-spring, freely jointed chains composed of hydrophobic linear monomers and hydrophilic dendritic monomers. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), micelle size distribution, and shape are examined as a function of dendron generation and architecture. For diblock copolymers with a linear block of fixed length, it is found that the CMC increases with increasing dendron generation. This trend qualitatively agrees with experiments on linear-dendritic diblock and triblock copolymers with hydrophilic dendritic blocks and hydrophobic linear blocks. The flexibility of the dendritic block is altered by varying the number of spacer monomers between branch points in the dendron. When comparing linear-dendritic diblock copolymers with similar molecular weights, it is shown that increasing the number of spacer monomers in the dendron lowers the CMC due to an increase in flexibility of the dendritic block. Analysis on the micellar structure shows that linear-dendritic diblock copolymers pack more densely than what would be expected for a linear-linear diblock copolymer of the same molecular weight.  相似文献
