Thermally stable poly(α-methyl styrene-co-maleimide) (MSMI) and poly(α-methyl styrene-co-4-carboxyphenyl maleimide) (MSCM) substrate polymers were obtained readily by free radical polymerization of comonomers. Introduction of a DR1 chromophore to the maleimide units of MSMI substrate polymer by the Mitsunobu reaction was dependent on the reaction solvent. The degree of substitution of DR1 into the MSMI polymer was bound to be 91.1 mol % and 0.4 mol % by UV spectrometers in the THF and DMF solvent, respectively. DR1 chromophore was, however, substituted in the MSCM polymer at 33.0 mol % by Mitsunobu reaction in the THF solvent. Both substrate and NLO polymer exhibited high thermal stability due to the incorporation of maleimide units in the polymer chain. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and initial decomposition temperature (Ti) of the NLO polymer were in the range of Tg = 185°C and Ti = 310–345°C. The electro-optic coefficient (r33) of NLO polymer was determined with an experimental setup capable of the real-time measurement while varying both the poling field and temperature. The NLO polymer MSMI-THF had a higher r33 value than MSCM-DR due to an increased degree of substitution of DR1 chromophore. MSMI-THF had a maximum r33 value of 16 pm/V at 135 MV/m poling field with a 632.8 nm light source. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 3715–3722, 1999  相似文献

Photocrosslinkable second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers were synthesized from cationic copolymerization of a vinyl ether monomer bearing 4′-nitrobiphenyl-4-oxy group as the NLO chromophore with a vinyl ether monomer bearing cinnamoyl group as the photoreactive moiety. To obtain a suitable poling method involving photocrosslinking, which is capable of inducing a higher and more stable second-order nonlinear coefficient, d33, for NLO polymer films, some poling procedures were investigated. An optimized poling method was as follows. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is performed for 90 sec during poling at 50°C for 20 min, followed by poling at 150°C for 20 min. By using this poling method NLO polymer films exhibited a higher and considerably stable d33 value at room temperature, even though they had rather lower glass transition temperatures before photocrosslinking. Some photocrosslinking mechanism for NLO polymers investigated here were considered.  相似文献

Novel nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore, 2-{3-[2-(4-methylsulfonylphenyl)vinyl]carbazol-9-yl}ethanol was synthesized and subsequently reacted with methacryloyl chloride to give a photoconducting NLO monomer ( M1 ). 2-Methylacrylic acid 2-[3-(diphenylhydrazonomethyl)carbazol-9-yl]ethyl ester ( M2 ) was also synthesized as a comonomer to enhance the carrier mobility of the NLO polymer. Photoconducting NLO polymers, P1 and P2 were obtained by the copolymerization of Ml with methyl methacrylate and M2 , respectively. These polymers were well soluble in organic solvents and showed glass transition at 177 °C and 196 °C, respectively. Polymer films of P1 and P2 were optically clear, and were transparent at wavelengths longer than 420 nm. The electro-optic coefficient (r33) of poled P1 films was measured to be ∼5 pm/V at 632.8 nm. The photoconductive sensitivities of P1 and P2 were 6.2 × 10−14 S·cm−1/mW·cm−2 and 5.6 × 10−11 S·cm−1/mW·cm−2.  相似文献

We report herein the peripheral functionalization of a high glass transition temperature hyperbranched polyimide with a new and highly performing electro‐optic chromophore for the elaboration of a second‐order nonlinear optical material. In this study, the CPO1 chromophore was selected for its very high quadratic hyperpolarizability coefficient (μβ = 31,000 ? 10?48 esu at 1990 nm) and its ease of synthesis in multigram scale. As a result, the new electro‐optic polymer was characterized by an r33 coefficient around 40 pm/V at 1.5 µm, although the poling conditions were not optimized. For sake of comparison, the electro‐optic r33 coefficient of our previously reported similar polymer functionalized with the well‐known Disperse Red One chromophore was also measured using the technique and gave a much lower r33 coefficient. This study underscores that hyperbranched polymers are particularly promising matrices to host highly efficient chromophore to achieve more efficient and more stable electro‐optic devices than classical linear polymers. High glass transition temperature poly(N‐cyclohexyl‐5‐norbornene‐2,3‐dicarboximide)s (NDI)s prepared by ring opening metathesis polymerization yielded polymers with a narrow polydispersity and well‐controlled molecular weight materials when using the Grubbs first generation initiator. Polymers produced using the Grubbs second generation initiator could not be controlled easily. By initiator selection it was also possible to synthesize polymers with either 98 or 52% trans microstructures. These materials were employed as electro‐optic (EO) polymer hosts for high molecular hyperpolarizability (β) phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene bridge chromophores. This chromophore was modified by the incorporation of a tert‐butyldiphenylsilane group. The addition was able to further increase its EO coefficient (r33) to reach 93 pm/V in a trans rich poly(NDI) produced by the Grubbs first generation initiator, compared to a benchmark chromophore / polymer combination. We investigated in detail the relationship between polymer microstructure and their absolute molecular weight on forming the best host–guest with the high β chromophore. Our results indicate that by utilizing a very simple host–guest system a high r33 can be realized. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

An ω‐amino carboxylic acid monomer that contained a nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore was prepared by a convergent synthesis. Strategies for selective protection/deprotection of the amino and carboxylic acid functionalities were developed. The protected monomer, 4‐[N‐(4‐benzyloxycarbonyl)butyl‐N‐methylamino]‐4′‐[2″,5″‐bis(decyloxy)‐4″‐(phthalimidomethyl)benzylsulfonyl]azobenzene, could be deprotected selectively or sequentially to give HOOC‐monomer‐N‐phthaloyl, benzyl‐OOC‐monomer‐NH2, or HOOC‐monomer‐NH2. Sequential synthesis was performed to yield main‐chain NLO dimers and tetramers. This was accomplished by selective deprotection and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide coupling. The HOOC‐monomer‐NH2 was polymerized by treatment with diphenylphosphoryl azide to give a main‐chain NLO polyamide. The monomer, dimer, tetramer, and polymer NLO materials were characterized by 1H, 13C, IR, and UV–visible spectroscopy as well as by gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and elemental analysis. The NLO properties of these materials were measured. Thin films of the oligomers and polymer were prepared by spin casting on indium‐tin oxide coated glass. The second‐order NLO properties of the oligomers and polymer thin films were studied by in situ corona poling/second‐harmonic generation and attenuated total reflection methods. The optimal poling temperatures were significantly lower than the melting temperatures or glass‐transition temperatures of the oligomers and polymer. The poling efficiency increased in the following order: monomer, oligomers, and polymer. An electro‐optic coefficient of 4 pm/V at 1.06 μm was obtained for the polymer. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Through the combination of the divergent and convergent approaches, coupled with the utilization of the powerful Sharpless “click‐chemistry” reaction, two series of sulfonyl‐based high‐generation NLO dendrimers were conveniently prepared with high purity and in satisfactory yields. Thanks to the perfect three‐dimensional (3D) spatial isolation from the highly branched structure and the isolation effect of the exterior benzene moieties and the interior triazole rings, these dendrimers exhibited large second harmonic generation coefficient (d33) values up to 181 pm V?1, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest value so far for polymers containing sulfonyl‐based chromophore moieties. Meanwhile, compared with the nitro‐chromophore‐based analogues, their optical transparency and NLO stability were improved in a large degree, due to the lower dipole moment (μ) and the special main‐chain structure of sulfonyl‐based chromophore in these dendrimers.  相似文献

New crosslinkable polymers with a nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophore as a pendant group were synthesized by condensation chain polymerization via palladium‐catalyzed carbon–carbon coupling reactions. The polymerization yields were almost quantitative between the diiodobenzene (DIB) and diethyldipropargyl malonate (DEDPM) or 4‐(dimethylamino)‐4′‐(6‐dipropargylacetoxypropylsulfonyl)stilbene (DASS‐6) monomers. To improve the molecular weight and mechanical properties of the NLO active polymer, we carried out the copolymerization with DIB and DASS‐6 with various feed ratios of DEDPM. The resulting polymers were soluble in organic solvents and spun‐cast onto indium tin oxide‐coated glass substrates to make thin films. The molecular structures of the resulting polymers were characterized with various instrumental methods to confirm the carbon–carbon coupling reactions between the DIB and diacetylene monomers. The absorption of the ultraviolet–visible spectrum of the resulting polymers was drastically reduced after thermal curing at 160 °C because of the crosslinking of the reactive acetylene group in the polymer backbone. The electrooptic coefficient (r33) measured at 1.3 μm ranged from 7 to 15 pm/V. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 4025–4034, 2001  相似文献

Methacrylate polymers containing different molar contents of nonlinear optical (NLO) active molecular segments based on 2‐[4‐(N‐methyl,N‐hydroxyethylamino)phenylazo]‐phenyl‐6‐nitrobenzoxazole chromophores were synthesized, and their phase behavior and second‐order NLO properties were investigated. Polymers containing 6–17 mol % chromophore segments allowed the preparation of amorphous and optically clear thin films. Some mesomorphic structuration was exhibited by a polymer with 33 mol % chromophoric units. However, this feature did not prevent the possibility of investigating the NLO properties. Nonlinear resonance‐enhanced d33 coefficients were determined by second harmonic generation experiments on spin‐coated, corona‐poled thin films at λ = 1064 nm. Values ranging from 40 to 60 pm/V were measured with increasing chromophore molar contents. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1841–1847, 2003  相似文献

In order to obtain polymers having high second order nonlinear optical (NLO) response, various novel polymers that contain polar dye molecules in side chains and diacetylenic groups in the main chains were synthesized, and their second order NLO properties were studied. Some of these polymers consisting of para-benzoate and para-cinnamate main chains, showed extremely high NLO coefficients, d33 of 200 - 350 pm/V, and the corresponding meta polymers showed much inferior NLO coefficients. The polymers having aliphatic main chains had very little NLO response probably because of their low glass transition temperatures and flexibility of main chains. The high SHG responses of these polymers are attributed to their facile orientation of both chromophores and main chains. In the case of para-polymers, the main chain orientation of alkoxybenzoate and cinnamate along the chromophore is thought to be a reason for their high NLO coefficients.  相似文献

A new NLO‐active polyurethane (Tg = 145°C) based on a two‐dimensional NLO chromophore has been investigated. Two ends of this lambda‐shaped chromophore can be directly bound to the main chain of polyurethane. After poling, fast relaxation of the effective second harmonic (SH) coefficient was observed at temperatures higher than 122°C. Moreover, excellent temporal stability at 100°C was obtained despite the operating temperature being very close to the fast relaxation temperature. This is due to the fact that embedding the rigid lambda‐shaped chromophores into the polymer backbone effectively restricts molecular motion at temperatures close to Tg.  相似文献

Abstract

An epoxy-based nonlinear optical (NLO) polymeric material incorporating 4-(4′-nitrophenylazo) phenylamine has been synthesized and subsequently functionalized with acryloyl groups. A glass transition temperature (T 8)of 108°C and a degradation temperature (air) of 251°C were recorded. After crosslinking at 160°C for 2 hours, the T 8 of the polymer increased to 146°C. In order to increase the nonlinear optical chromophore concentration and the crosslinking density, the crosslink-able NLO dye, 2,4-acryloyloxy (4′-phenylazo nitrobenzene), was processed and poled in this epoxy-based NLO material matrix in a manner similar to a typical guest-host system, and thermally crosslinked under the above condition in the poled phase. The crosslinked guest-host material was found to be amorphous with a T 8 of approximately 132°C. It also exhibits a second-order nonlinear optical coefficient d 33 of 14.14 pm/V at a maximum doping level of 33% by weight of the NLO dye, and retains 93% of its original d 33 value after being subjected to thermal treatment at 100°C for 168 hours. The behavior of the crosslinked polymer and the crosslinked guest-host polymer is discussed.  相似文献

A thermal stable aromatic polyimide (PI) with side‐chain second‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores has been developed. The PI was prepared by the ring‐opening polyaddition of 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride with a new diamine having two N‐ethyl‐N‐[4‐[(6‐chlorobenzothiazol‐2‐yl)diazenyl]phenyl]‐2‐aminoethanol units as the NLO chromophore, followed by poling during or after the thermal imidization process. The resulting PI had number and weight‐average molecular weights (Mn, Mw) of 25,000 and 80,000, respectively, and a relatively high glass transition temperature of 180°C. The second harmonic coefficient (d33) of PI at the wavelength of 1.064 μm was 138 pm/V (329.6 × 10−9 esu) and remained unchanged at elevated temperatures. The corona poling process of the NLO‐substituted poly(amic acid) to the PI was also studied in detail by measuring the second harmonic generation (SHG) from the polymer films. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new class of multifunctional polymers based on poly(1, 6-heptadiyne) derivatives with various functional groups such as carbazole unit for photoconductive polymers and nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores for NLO polymers were synthesized by metathesis polymerization. The polymerizations were carried out with MoCl5- and WCl6-based catalysts. The catalytic activity of MoCl5 was found to be greater than that of WCl6. The resulting polymers exhibited photoconductivity and large optical nonlinearity. These conjugated polymers have good solubility in common organic solvents, long-term stability toward air oxidation, and high electrical conductivity.  相似文献

This study synthesized and characterized a novel series of polyurethanes containing nonlinear optic (NLO) chromophores, which possess different dimensional or various isolation‐groups. These chromophores are based on 4‐(dicyanomethylene)‐2‐methyl‐6‐(p‐(dimethylamino)styryl)‐4H‐pyran (DCM‐typed dye). The NLO polyurethane containing a one‐dimensional isolation‐group of chromophores efficiently enhances thermal stability, but poling efficiency is not always improved as the size of isolation‐group increases. The enormous isolation group restrained the mobility of chromophore in the polymer matrix and shows a worsening SH intensity. The maximum second harmonic coefficient (d33 = 68.7 pm/V) is displayed as benzene is attaching to chromophore moieties as isolation‐group in this study. Polyurethane containing two‐dimensional chromophore shows superior thermal stability due to the large volume required to rotate the chromophore in the polymer matrix. Two‐dimensional system exhibits lower SH intensity due to the rigid polymer main chain and twisted conjugated plane. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have prepared new polyesters containing quadratic, nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophores covalently incorporated into the main chain. In these polymers, the sequence of the chromophore units along the main chain is rigorously head to tail. All the polyesters are processable, both in the melt and in solution. For one polyester, a full second‐order NLO characterization has been performed. An out‐of‐resonance d33 coefficient of 21 pm/V at 1368 nm has been measured. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A multiple charge‐transfer second‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore 2,3‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)‐5,6‐dicyanopyrazine (BAPDCP) was successfully designed and synthesized. It was characterized by 1H NMR, mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The first hyperpolarizability β of BAPDCP was measured with the Hyper–Rayleigh scattering technique, which was 123.5 × 10?30 esu. The donor‐embedded prepolyimide and prepolyurea were also synthesized by a polyaddition reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated that either the chromophore or the polymers have fine thermal stability. The thin films of prepolymers were prepared by coating on ITO glass substrate and poled by corona poling at elevating temperature. The second‐order NLO coefficients d33 of the films were measured by in situ second‐harmonic generation measurements. The d33 were deduced as 27.7 and 16.5 pm/V for polyurea and polyimide at 1064 nm fundamental wavelength, respectively. The onset depoling temperature of the polyimide and polyurea were both as high as 200 °C. To understand the temperature effect to the orientation thermal stability of polyimide, two films were treated at different final poling temperatures. The depoling experimental results showed that the orientation stability is higher, as raising the final treated temperature but the d33 value are almost similar. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. By covalently binding chromophore NPP, N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol, to a structurallycontrolled cage-like cross-linking polymer (SCCP), a modified nonlinear optical (NLO) polymeric filmprepared by "in situ poling and sol-gel" process successfully overcame the fundamental problem of NPPchromophores subliming out from the cages of the "doped" NLO polymeric film when heated or placed underUV light. Its d_(33) (coefficient of second harmonic generation) is 2.0×10~(-8) esu. measured by IR dichroism. Themodified film has a low decay of the SHG signal and preserves 94% of the initial value after 50 days at roomtemperature. These properties match that of the "doped" film, indicating that the modified film also retainsthe main advantages of the "doped" film.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and characterization of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) exhibiting nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The network consists of aliphatic polycarbonate urethane (PCU) and poly(methyl methacrylate-co-N,N-disubstituted urea), with a nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore incorporated into N,N-disubstituted urea. The full IPNs have only one Tg, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), together with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, suggest a single phase morphology. The thin films of IPNs are transparent and the unpoled samples produced second harmonic generation (SHG) signals at room temperature. This result indicates that the NLO chromophore is oriented noncentrosymmetrically during the IPN formation process and is tightly held between the permanent entanglements of the two component networks of the IPN. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A new organic/inorganic hybrid nonlinear optical (NLO) material was developed by the sol-gel process of analkoxysilane dye with tetraethoxysilane. A NLO moiety based on 4-nitro-4'-hydroxy azobenzene was covalently bonded tothe triethoxysilane derivative, i.e. γ-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane. The preparation process and properties of the sol-gelderived NLO polymer were studied and characterized by SEM, FTIR, ~1H-NMR, UV-Vis, DSC and second harmonicgeneration (SHG) measurement. The results indicated that the chemical bonding of the chromophores to the inorganic SiO_2networks induces low dipole alignment relaxation and preferable orientational stability. The SHG measurements also showedthat the bonded polymer film containing 75 wt% of the akoxysilane dye has a high electro-optic coefficient (r_(33)) of 7.1 pm/Vat 1.1 μm wavelength, and exhibit good SHG stability, the r_(33) values can maintain about 92.7% of its initial value at roomtemperature for 90 days, and can maintain about 59.3% at 100℃ for 300 min.s  相似文献
