This article describes the preparation of micron-size monodisperse polymer particles by dispersion copolymerization of styrene with a poly(2-oxazoline) macromonomer in an aqueous ethanol solution. The macromonomer acted as a comonomer as well as a stabilizer. The diameter of the particles increased as the concentration of the macromonomer decreased. The higher the molecular weight of the macromonomer, the smaller the particle size. The copolymerization in the solvent containing higher water content gave smaller polymer particles. Under the condition giving the monodisperse particles, the particles volume increased linearly with the yield of the particles. From ESCA analysis of the particle surface, poly(2-oxazoline) chains were enriched on the surface. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) [poly(GMA)] microspheres of narrow size distribution were prepared in a simple one‐step procedure by dispersion radical polymerization. Depending on the solvent used, poly(GMA) particle size could be controlled in the range of 0.5–4 μm by changing the solubility parameter of the reaction mixture. In N,N′‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/methanol mixture, the particle size increased and the size distribution broadened with decreasing initial solubility parameter. While in the DMF/methanol solvent system, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) were taken as steric stabilizers of the dispersion polymerization, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used in alcoholic media. Contrary to the DMF/methanol system, narrow particle size distributions were obtained with PVP‐stabilized polymerizations in ethanolic, methanolic, propan‐1‐olic or butan‐1‐olic medium. Both the particle size and polydispersity were reduced with increasing stabilizer concentration. If lower molecular‐weight PVP was used, larger microspheres were obtained. Poly(GMA) samples prepared in a neat alcoholic medium virtually quantitatively retained oxirane group content after the polymerization. Reactivity of the poly(GMA) microspheres was confirmed by their hydrolysis and aminolysis. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 3855–3863, 2000  相似文献

A comprehensive experimental study of aqueous heterophase homopolymerization of 2-hydroxyetyl methacrylate revealed special conditions that must be fulfilled in order to obtain stable latex particles in the nanometer size range. The results clearly show that the formation and the stability of this kind of hydrophilic latex particle strongly depends on the hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties of both the initiating radicals and the stabilizers. Hydrophobic initiators in combination with sodium alkyl sulfate surfactants of proper chain lengths or ionic surface-active initiators lead to stable latex particles. In the latter case the particles keep their identity and spherical shape even after drying of the aqueous dispersion.  相似文献

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) particles in the micron size range were obtained by the dispersion polymerization. Cellulose acetate butyrate and dibenzoyl peroxide were used as steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The ultimate particle size could be adjusted by the selection of a suitable polymerization medium consisting of an alcohol added to toluene and by varying their relative amounts. The particle size increased with increasing solubility parameter of the mixture, i.e., by decreasing the toluene/2-methylpropan-1-ol, toluene/butan-2-ol, and toluene/3-methylbutan-1-ol ratio. The particle size decreased with increasing concentration of the stabilizer and/or initiator. At the same time, the particle size distribution became narrower. Particles prepared from polymerization mixtures purged with nitrogen before the start of polymerization were smaller, and of narrower distribution, than those prepared from nitrogen-non-purged mixtures. Equilibrium swelling of particles in toluene decreased with the decreasing content of toluene in the polymerization mixture. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles ranging in diameter from 2 to 10 μm were prepared by dispersion polymerization. The effects of various polymerization parameters on the size and monodispersity were systematically investigated. The particle size was found to increase with increasing polymerization temperature, concentration and decomposition rate of the initiator, and solvency of the dispersion medium. It also increased with increasing concentration and molecular weight of the polymeric stabilizer, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). As the monomer concentration was increased from 5 to 20 wt %, a minimum was found in the particle size at a monomer concentration of 10 wt %. A costabilizer was found to be necessary for preparing monodisperse particles at stabilizer concentrations below 2 wt %. A recycling experiment showed that the consumption of PVP was quite small in each cycle and the residual materials in this system could be reused readily. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The dispersion polymerization of styrene in supercritical CO2 utilizing poly(1,1-dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) (p-FOA) as a polymeric stabilizer was investigated as well as poly(1,1-dihydroperfluorooctyl methacrylate) (p-FOMA). The resulting high yield (>85%) of spherical and relatively uniform polystyrene (PS) particles with micron-size range (2.9–9.6 µm) was formed for 40 h at 370 bar using various amounts of p-FOA and p-FOMA as a stabilizer with good stability until the end of the reaction. The particle diameter was shown to be dependent on the weight percent of added stabilizer. Previously, we reported that p-FOA was not effective for the dispersion polymerization of styrene as a stabilizer. Here, we find that p-FOA can indeed be an effective stabilizer for the dispersion polymerization of styrene in supercritical CO2, but the pressure necessary to achieve good stability is higher than pressure used by us previously. This study suggests the possibility that fluorinated acrylic homopolymers are effective for the dispersion polymerization of various kinds of monomers as a stabilizer. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Photoconductive poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) particles were prepared by a chemical oxidative dispersion polymerization. The utilization of statistical copolymer of methyl methacrylate with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (30:70) as a dispersant afforded particles with the narrowest distribution when the other experimental conditions such as the rate of monomer feed, and the dispersant concentration were appropriately selected. Porous particles were obtained at 40 °C using poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) as a dispersant.  相似文献

The vinyl of the ester group of 2-vinyloxyethyl methacrylate was first selectively reacted with acetic acid to obtain 2-[1-(acetoxy)ethoxy]ethyl methacrylate ( 2 ). This protected monomer was subjected to anionic polymerization in tetrahydrofuran at −60°C in the presence of LiCl, using 1,1-diphenylhexyllithium as initiator. The molecular weight of the polymer could thus be controlled and a narrow molecular weight distribution obtained. The protecting group, 1-(acetoxy)ethyl, could be easily eliminated (by quenching the polymerization reaction with methanol and water) to generate poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (poly(HEMA)). Block copolymers were also prepared by the sequential anionic polymerization of MMA and 2 or styrene and 2 . They possess narrow molecular weight distributions, and controlled molecular weights and compositions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 1865–1872, 1998  相似文献

The goal was to electrospin 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate — based biocompatible polymers and prepare submicron fibres (nanofibers) for biomedicinal applications. Syntheses of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (HEMA) and its copolymer with 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate (EOEMA), and their characterization by viscometry and molecular weight are described. Their relation to electrospinning is discussed. Electrospinning of HEMA homopolymer from water-ethanol is successful for molecular weights 6.31 × 105 and 1.80 × 106 g/mol. Electrospinning of HEMA/EOEMA copolymers is feasible from ethanol.   相似文献

Micron-sized monodispersed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/polystyrene (PS) (PMMA/PS=2/1, wt ratio) composite particles consisting of PMMA-core and PS-shell were successfully produced by seeded dispersion polymerization of styrene in a methanol/water medium in the presence of about 2 μm-sized monodispersed PMMA particles. From the view point of thermodynamic equilibrium, such a morphology is difficult to form by usual seeded polymerization in a polar medium such as water. It is concluded that seeded dispersion polymerization in which almost all monomers and initiators exist in the medium has an advantage to produce core/shell polymer particles in which polymer layers accumulate in their order of the production regardless of the hydrophobicity of polymers, because of high viscosity in polymerizing particles. Utilizing a new type of monomer swelling method, 6.1 m-size monodisperse polymer particles were prepared by seeded polymerization. 1.8 m-size monodisperse polystyrene (PS) seed particles (1.8 m in size) were prepared by dispersion polymerization in ethanol-water (80/20, v/v) medium in the presence of poly(acrylic acid) as stabilizer with 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The PS seed dispersion was mixed with ethanol-water (60/40, v/v) solution dissolving styrene (S) monomer, benzoyl peroxide as initiator, and poly(vinyl alcohol) as stabilizer. By slow, continuous, dropwise addition of water with a micro feeder into the mixture, the PS particles absorbed the many S monomers, which were separated from the medium and swelled from 1.8 m to 8.4 m while keeping the monodispersity high. We named this procedure the dynamic swelling method. Then, the seeded polymerization of the absorbed S monomer was carried out in the presence of NaNO2 as water-solube inhibitor.Part CXXII of the series Studies on Suspension and Emulsion.  相似文献

The precipitation polymerization of commercial divinylbenzene in acetonitrile containing up to 40 vol. % toluene or other cosolvents is shown to produce novel porous monodisperse poly(divinylbenzene) microspheres. These microspheres have diameters between 4 and 7 μm, total pore volumes of up to 0.52 cm3/g, and surface areas of up to 800 m2/g. As no surfactant nor stabilizer was used in the preparation of these particles, their surfaces are free of any such residues. The particles were slurry-packed into stainless steel columns for size exclusion chromatography evaluation, and the results show an exclusion limit at molecular weights of 500 g/mol. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Fine magnetite nanoparticles, both electrostatically stabilized and nonstabilized, were synthesized in situ by precipitation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts in alkaline medium. Magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres with core‐shell structure, where Fe3O4 is the magnetic core and PGMA is the shell, were obtained by dispersion polymerization initiated with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA), or ammonium persulfate (APS) in ethanol containing poly(vinylpyrrolidone) or ethylcellulose stabilizer in the presence of iron oxide ferrofluid. The average microsphere size ranged from 100 nm to 2 μm. The effects of the nature of ferrofluid, polymerization temperature, monomer, initiator, and stabilizer concentration on the PGMA particle size and polydispersity were studied. The particles contained 2–24 wt % of iron. AIBN produced larger microspheres than APS or ACVA. Polymers encapsulating electrostatically stabilized iron oxide particles contained lower amounts of oxirane groups compared with those obtained with untreated ferrofluid. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel oxazoline-functional methacrylate was prepared and employed as comonomer to produce nonaqueous dispersions of oxazoline-functional polymer particles. In nonaqueous free radical dispersion copolymerization of methylmethacrylate in the presence of oxazoline-functional methacrylate, ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate crosslinking agent, AIBN initiator, and polystyrene-block-poly(ethene-alt-propene) dispersing agent, the average polymer particle size, varying between 100 and 500 nm, was controlled by the dispersing agent contents. According to titration with HClO4 all oxazoline groups regardless of their location at particle surface or bulk, were accessible. Glass transition temperature decreased from 120 to 0°C when oxazoline functional methacrylate was increased from 0 to 95 mol %. As imaged by atomic force microscopy incorporation of the new oxazoline-functional methacrylate improved film formation. Oxazoline-functional polymer particles were easy to redisperse in a variety of other diluents. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35: 2539–2548, 1997  相似文献

Amphiphilic graft copolymers are excellent additives for the development of antifouling membranes by nonsolvent induced phase separation. We report a convenient approach to the synthesis of novel graft copolymers with hydrophobic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) backbones and hydrophilic poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) side chains. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate was carried out with poly(acrylonitrile-co-p-chloromethyl styrene) (PAN-co-PCMS) as a macroinitiator in the presence of CuCl/2,2’-bipyridine at 50 °C in dimethyl sulfoxide. Kinetics of the graft polymerization was also evaluated. The synthesis of poly(acrylonitrile-co-p-chloromethyl styrene-g-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PAN-co-(PCMS-g-PHEMA)) can be relatively controlled when CMS (the ATRP sites) unit in the macroinitiator is around 5 mol%. Both the macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by FTIR, NMR and GPC. The surface morphology and wettability of the copolymer films were studied by AFM and water contact angle measurement, respectively. We demonstrate that phase segregation between the PAN-co-PCMS backbones and the PHEMA side chains takes place and the surface hydrophilicity of the graft copolymers increases with the length of the PHEMA side chains. Because these amphiphilic graft copolymers can be synthesized in mass, they will be useful as latent additives for the fabrication of advanced PAN separation membranes.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PSt)/poly (4-butyltriphenylamine; PBTPA) composite particles was prepared by a chemical oxidative seeded dispersion polymerization of (4-butyltriphenylamine) with PSt seed particles that were prepared by nonaqueous dispersion polymerization of styrene. Monodisperse composite particles were obtained when the ratio of monomer to seed, the rate of monomer feed, and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone; PVP) concentration was appropriately selected. The introduction of PBTPA was confirmed by the presence of the characteristic absorption band attributed to PBTPA from a Fourier transform infrared spectra. The solvent extraction with ethyl acetate revealed that composite particles consisted of PSt core and PBTPA shell. Then two-dimensional arrays of composite particles were also fabricated.  相似文献

The preparation of monodisperse polymer particles formed by a dispersion copolymerization of a system containing styrene, butyl methacrylate, and nonpolymerizable dyes has been studied. Both the polarity of the ethanol–water dispersion medium and the polymerization rate were found to have a significant effect on the particle size. Experimental conditions have been determined that enable the preparation of colored beads having a narrow size distribution. While the benzoyl peroxide initiated polymerization is seriously inhibited by the presence of dyes, polymerization with azobisisobutyronitrile in presence of the black dye Nigrosin affords monodisperse beads in a high yield. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Oxidation of ferrous orthophenanthroline (FeP) by peroxydiphosphate (PP) in aqueous medium at pH 1 was followed spectrophotometrically. Kinetic analysis has shown that oxidation occurs via the formation of an intermediate complex between FeP and PP. Equi-librium and rate constants were calculated. Influence of surfactants on the oxidation of FeP by PP was also Investigated. The equilibrium constant for complex formation was found to be higher in the presence of surfactants. The enhanced complex formation has been attributed to the ionic interactions between the charged surfactant and the ionic species in the reaction medium. Polymerization of HEMA initiated by the redox system,FeP/PP, was carried out in aqueous medium, under the conditions of excess reductant over oxidant and excess oxidant over reductant. The polymerization followed different mech-anisms under these conditions; with excess oxidant, the growing polymer radicals underwent oxidative termination, while with excess reductant, primary radical termination was pre-ferred. The effect of surfactants on the aqueous polymerization of HEMA using the redox system FeP/PP was also investigated. In addition to the decrease in rate, the polymerization followed a different mechanism in the presence of surfactants, the growing radicals ter-minated by mutual interaction. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The dispersion copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in a toluene/2-methylpropan-1-ol mixture in the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with oleic acid, produced monodisperse magnetic poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (P(HEMA-GMA)) microspheres. Oxirane groups of the microspheres were ammonolyzed and then functionalized with streptavidin using cyanuric chloride. The final product contained 0.67 mg of streptavidin per gram of wet magnetic P(HEMA-GMA) microspheres. The microspheres were characterized by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, IR, UV–VIS and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The streptavidin-modified magnetic P(HEMA-GMA) microspheres were used for immobilization of biotinylated DNA and subsequent selective isolation of target DNA from complex samples using DNA/DNA hybridisation. Based on the highly selective recognition of streptavidin with a biotin-labeled DNA probe, DNA sensor was constructed for magnetic separation of DNA from real samples.  相似文献
