The vibration-correlation technique, VCT for definition of real boundary conditions, and the method of repeated buckling were employed for nondestructive generation of improved interaction curves for buckling of stringer-stiffened circular-cylindrical shells subjected to a combined axial compression and external-pressure state of loading. Thirteen shells were tested, five on clamped boundary conditions and eight on norminal simple supports. The study also included an assessment of the influence of the order of loading on the behavior of the shells before and at buckling as a result of the nonlinear interaction. It has been shown that the VCT and repeated buckling approach are feasible for closely stiffened shells and are adequate tools for the derivation of more realistic buckling interaction curves. It appears that the sequence of loading, constant axial compression first and then increasing the external pressure until buckling occurs, or the reverse order of loading, does not influence the buckling loads.

An analytical method for the treatment of the elastic buckling problem of continuous beams with intermediate unilateral constraints is presented, which is based on the fundamental theory of elastic stability. The study focuses on the unilateral contact buckling problem of beams in the presence of initial geometric imperfections. The mathematical Euler approach, based on the fundamental solution of the boundary value problem of the buckling of continuous beams, is appropriately modified in order to take into account the unilateral contact conditions. Furthermore, in order the obtained analytical solutions to be applicable for practical design cases, the actual strength of the cross-section of the beam under combined compression and bending is considered. The implementation of the proposed method is demonstrated through a characteristic example.

We investigate the mechanical stability of L-section and T-section composite struts with single edge delamination. We propose a solution procedure based on a layerwise theory and the first order shear deformation theory by taking into consideration of the von Karman geometrical nonlinearity. We derive the nonlinear equilibrium equations according to the minimum total potential energy principle, and solve them using Rayleigh–Ritz method and Newton–Raphson method. In modeling the delaminated L-section and T-section struts, we divide the structures into regions, and exert continuity conditions between different regions. The proposed model is capable of analyzing both local buckling of the base laminate and sublaminate as well as the global buckling of the whole structure. We present numerical results to provide an insight into effects of size of delamination on buckling mode and post-buckling behaviors of the struts. We perform the three-dimensional finite element analysis using the ABAQUS commercial software. The results show a very good agreement with those obtained by the analytical method. The results indicate that the presence of delaminations not only reduces the load-carrying capacity of open section struts remarkably, but also plays a pivotal role in the critical buckling load and buckling mode shape of the struts.

While studies of post-buckling behavior and load-carrying capacities of thin plates subjected to uniaxial compression have been limited to stable conditions, further post-buckling loading generates an unstable condition. The secondary buckling which occurs with snap-through to higher-order deflections under such unstable conditions has not been analyzed in detail as yet. In the first part of this paper, a thin square plate under uniaxial compression, which is simply supported along four edges, is considered. A method based on the second variation of the total potential energy is then proposed for evaluating the stability of the post-buckling equilibrium state and inevitable secondary buckling is derived analytically. The effects of various factors, such as initial imperfections, assumed virtual displacement pattern, post-buckling deflection pattern and in-plane boundary conditions, on the secondary buckling values are discussed. In part 2, secondary buckling of clamped plates is analyzed by use of the finite element method and the resultant numerical results are compared with experimental results.

The buckling of nanostructures including as a nanobeam, nanorod, and nanotube in a temperature field is investigated based on the non-local elasticity field theory with non-linear strain gradients first proposed by Eringen. New higher-order governing differential equations both in transverse and axial direction for buckling of such nanostructures are derived based on the exact variational principle approach with corresponding higher-order non-local boundary conditions. Based on these new governing equations and boundary conditions, new analytical solutions for some practical examples on buckling of nanostructures are presented and analyzed in detail. Subsequently, the effects of non-local nanoscale and temperature change on critical buckling load are analyzed and discussed. It is observed that those factors have great influence on the critical buckling load of the nanostructures. In particular, the non-local stress very much affects the stiffness of nanostructures and the critical buckling load is significantly increased in the presence of non-local stress. The paper concludes that at low and room temperature the critical buckling load of nanostructures increases with increasing temperature change, while at high temperature the critical buckling load decreases with increasing temperature change. A critical temperature change which causes buckling without external load is also derived and discussed.

A method to study dynamical instability and non-linear parametric vibrations of symmetrically laminated plates of complex shapes and having different cutouts is proposed. The first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the classical plate theory (CPT) are used to formulate a mathematical statement of the given problem. The presence of cutouts essentially complicates the solution of buckling problem, since the stress field is non-uniform. At first, a plane stress analysis is carried out using the variational Ritz method and the R-functions theory. The obtained results are applied to investigate buckling and parametric vibrations of laminated plates. The developed method uses the R-functions theory, and it may be directly employed to study laminated plates of arbitrary forms and different boundary conditions. Besides, the proposed method is numerical-analytical, what greatly facilitates a solution of similar-like non-linear problems. In order to show the advantage of the developed approach, instability zones and response curves for the layered cross- and angle-ply plates with external cutouts are constructed and discussed.

This paper presents an analytical approach for pre-buckling and buckling analyses of thin-walled members implemented within the framework of the Generalised Beam Theory (GBT). With the proposed GBT cross-sectional analysis, the set of deformation modes used in the analysis is represented by the dynamic modes obtained for an unrestrained frame representing the cross-section. In this manner, it is possible to account for the deformability of the cross-section in both pre-buckling and buckling analyses. Different loading conditions, including both axial and transverse arrangements, are considered in the applications to highlight under which circumstances the use of the GBT deformation modes is required for an adequate representation of the pre-buckling and buckling response. The numerical results have been validated against those determined using a shell element model developed in the finite element software ABAQUS.

The buckling of a bar is studied analytically on the basis of a simple linear theory of gradient elasticity in the frame of the method of initial values. The method of initial values provides the values of the displacements and stress resultants throughout the bar once the initial displacements and initial stress resultants are known. We use probably for the first time the method of initial values to get critical loads of a strain gradient beam under completely different boundary conditions at the two end faces of the beam. Exact carryover matrix is presented for the classical beam and gradient beam analytically. The first mode shapes of classical beam and gradient beam are plotted. The method of initial values is also applied to the beams with variable cross-section. The priorities of the method of initial values are depicted. The variational approach gives a sixth-order ordinary differential equation for a beam in buckling. The additional boundary conditions are used to obtain critical loads. It is observed that critical loads increase dramatically for increasing values of the gradient coefficient.

In this study, a unified nonlinear dynamic buckling analysis for Euler–Bernoulli beam–columns subjected to constant loading rates is proposed with the incorporation of mercurial damping effects under thermal environment. Two generalized methods are developed which are competent to incorporate various beam geometries, material properties, boundary conditions, compression rates, and especially, the damping and thermal effects. The Galerkin–Force method is developed by implementing Galerkin method into force equilibrium equations. Then for solving differential equations, different buckled shape functions were introduced into force equilibrium equations in nonlinear dynamic buckling analysis. On the other hand, regarding the developed energy method, the governing partial differential equation for dynamic buckling of beams is also derived by meticulously implementing Hamilton’s principles into Lagrange’s equations. Consequently, the dynamic buckling analysis with damping effects under thermal environment can be adequately formulated as ordinary differential equations. The validity and accuracy of the results obtained by the two proposed methods are rigorously verified by the finite element method. Furthermore, comprehensive investigations on the structural dynamic buckling behavior in the presence of damping effects under thermal environment are conducted.

We discuss the non-linear theory of thin shells expressed in terms of displacements of the shell reference surface as the only independent field variables. The formulation is based on the principle of virtual work postulated for the reference surface. In our approach: (1) the vector equilibrium equations are represented through components in the deformed contravariant surface base, and using the compatibility conditions the resulting tangential equilibrium equations are additionally simplified, (2) at the shell boundary the new scalar function of displacement derivatives is defined and new sets of four work-conjugate static and geometric boundary conditions are derived, as well as (3) for prescribed shell geometry all non-linear shell relations are generated automatically by two packages set up in Mathematica. The displacement boundary value problem and the associated homogeneous shell buckling problem are generated exactly without using any additional approximations following from errors of the constitutive equations. Both problems are extremely complex and available only in the computer memory. Such an approach allows us to account also for those a few supposedly small terms which may be critical for finding the correct buckling load of shells sensitive to imperfections. This approach is used in the accompanying paper by Opoka and Pietraszkiewicz [Opoka, S., Pietraszkiewicz, W., 2009. On refined analysis of bifurcation buckling for the axially compressed circular cylinder. International Journal of Solids and Structures, 46, 3111–3123.] to perform the refined numerical analysis of bifurcation buckling for the axially compressed circular cylinder.

In this article, an efficient analytical method for elastically restrained Euler columns embedded in an elastic medium has been proposed to calculate buckling loads. The lateral deflection function under compression is represented by a Fourier sine series. Stokes’ transformation is employed to develop the legitimized stability equations. Explicit analytical expressions are derived, which can be used for any type of boundary conditions. The efficiency of present formulation is demonstrated by comparing the results to those obtained by imposing three well-known boundary conditions available in the literature. A very good agreement has been obtained. The present formulation permits to have more efficient coefficient matrix for calculating the buckling loads of Euler columns with any desired boundary conditions.

We relate the micromechanics of vortex evolution to that of force chain buckling and, on this basis, formulate the conditions for strain localization in a continuum model of dense granular media. Using the traditional bifurcation analysis of shear bands, we show that kinematic vortex fields are in fact solutions to the boundary value problem satisfying null boundary conditions. To establish an empirical basis for our study, we first develop a method to identify the location of the core and boundary of each vortex from a given displacement field in two dimensions. We then employ this method to characterize the residual deformation field (i.e., the deviation of particle motions from the continuum deformation) in a physical experiment and a discrete element simulation of dense granular samples submitted to biaxial compression. Vortices in the failure regime are essentially confined to the shear band. Primary vortices, the clear majority, rotate in the same direction as the shear band; secondary vortices, the so-called wakes, rotate in the opposite direction. Primary vortices align in spatial succession along the central axis of the band; wakes form next to the band boundaries, in between and beside two adjacent primary vortices. Force chain buckling, the governing mechanism for shear bands, is responsible for vortex formation in the failure regime. Vortex dynamics are consistent with stick-slip dynamics. From quiescent conditions of jamming or stick, vortical motions arise from force chain buckling and associated relative particle rotations and sliding; these in turn precipitate intermittent periods of unjamming or slip, evident in the attendant drops in stress ratio and bursts in both kinetic energy and local nonaffine deformation. A kinematic vortex field inside shear bands is proposed that is consistent with the equations of continuum mechanics and the underlying instability of force chain buckling: such a field is periodic with a repeating unit cell comprising a primary vortex at the center of the band, with two trailing wakes close next to the band boundaries.

A theoretical approach for the study of the effect of residual stresses due to welding on the elastic critical buckling behavior of thin steel rectangular plates is described. A finite difference technique is utilized for the determination of in-plane residual stresses due to a weld, and the Rayleight-Ritz method is used for the critical buckling problem, with stresses due to external loads being superimposed on the residual stresses. A number of illustrative examples are included, showing the possible detrimental effect of residual stresses due to welding. An approximately linear relationship is shown to exist between the square of the natural frequency of lateral vibration and the drop in buckling strength, for certain loading conditions

This work analyzes nonlinear buckling of a single spherical shell imperfectly bonded to an infinite elastic matrix under a compressive remote load. The inclusion is modeled using a nonlinear shell formulation and the matrix is treated as a linear elastic body. Imperfect bonding conditions are realized through a linear spring interface model. A variational method is used to derive the governing differential equations, which are cast into a tractable set of nonlinear algebraic equations using the Galerkin method. An incremental iterative technique based on the modified Newton–Raphson method is employed to find the critical load of the system. The accuracy and convergence properties of the proposed method are validated through finite element analysis. The study is relevant to the analysis of compressive failure of syntactic foams used in marine and aerospace applications. Results are specialized to glass particle-vinyl ester matrix syntactic foams to test the hypothesis as to whether microballoons’ buckling is a dominant failure mechanism in such composites under compression. Parametric studies are conducted to understand the effect of interfacial properties and inclusion wall thickness on the overall mechanical behavior of the composite. Comparisons between analytical findings and experimental results on compressive response of syntactic foams and isolated microballoons indicate that inclusion buckling is unlikely a determinant of compressive failure in vinyl ester-glass systems. In particular, the matrix is found to exert a beneficial stabilizing effect on the inclusions, which fail under brittle fracture before the onset of buckling.

A theoretical (semi-analytical) approach was proposed to estimate the dynamic in-plane response of corrugated core sandwich columns against suddenly applied loads with a compression rate less than 5 m/s. The model has been constructed so as to effectively include various dynamic effects such as stress wave propagation, material rate dependence and lateral inertia. The practical and theoretical complexities caused from the dynamic phenomena and the established governing equations (e.g. coupled non-uniform axial force distribution) have been resolved by employing Galerkin׳s method. The proposed approach was validated by comparing the calculations from the theoretical model and Finite Element Method (FEM): the load history and deformation shape of extruded Al6061-T6 corrugated core sandwich columns and bending/brazed SS304 corrugated core sandwich columns. The model successfully yielded the imperfection-sensitive, velocity-dependent dynamic response and appearance of higher buckling modes. In addition, it has been demonstrated that the sandwich columns with periodic cellular metals outperform their weight-equivalents, monolithic solid columns, under dynamic conditions. The proposed approach as an efficient tool to explore the dynamic global buckling response in design space can make preliminary studies of weight minimization for dynamic applications.

The paper addresses the issue of local buckling of compressed flanges of cold-formed thin-walled channel columns and beams with nonstandard flanges composed of aluminium alloys. The material behaviour follows the Ramberg–Osgood law. It should be noted that the proposed solution may be also applied for other materials, for example: stainless steel, carbon steel. The paper is motivated by an increasing interest in nonstandard cold-formed section shaping in local buckling analysis problems. Furthermore, attention is paid to the impact of material characteristics on buckling stresses in a nonlinear domain. The objective of the paper is to propose a finite element method (FEM) model and a relevant numerical procedure in ABAQUS, complemented by an analytical one. It should be noted that the proposed FEM energetic technique makes it possible to compute accurately the critical buckling stresses. The suggested numerical method is intended to accurately follow the entire structural equilibrium path under an active load in elastic and inelastic ranges. The paper is also focused on correct modelling of interactions between sheets of cross section of a possible contact during buckling analysis. Furthermore, the FEM results are compared with the analytical solution. Numerical examples confirm the validity of the proposed FEM procedures and the closed-form analytical solutions. Finally, a brief research summary is presented and the results are discussed further on.
