Three varieties of the closure of a set of iso-(oriented) rectangles, i.e., rectilin-early-oriented rectangles, are introduced. These are uni-directional, diagonal, and rectangular closure. First a strong decomposition theorem for diagonal closure in terms of uni-directional closure is proved. Then time and space optimal algorithms to compute uni-directional and diagonal closure, each running in O(nlogn) time and O(n) space, are described. An O(nlogn) time and space algorithm for rectangular closure is also described. The algorithm for diagonal closure has applications in database concurrency control: an O(nlogn) time and O(n) space algorithm for testing for safety and detecting deadlocks in locked transaction systems is obtained.  相似文献

Von zur Gathen proposed an efficient parallel exponentiation algorithm in finite fields using normal basis representations. In this paper we present a processor-efficient parallel exponentiation algorithm in GF(qn) which improves upon von zur Gathen's algorithm. We also show that exponentiation in GF(qn) can be done in O((log2n)2/logqn) time using n/(log2n)2 processors. Hence we get a processor-time bound of O(n/logqn), which matches the best known sequential algorithm. Finally, we present an efficient on-line processor assignment scheme which was missing in von zur Gathen's algorithm.  相似文献

Given a set of n points in the plane, two points are said to be rectangularly visible if the orthogonal rectangle with the two points as opposite vertices has no other point of the set in its interior. In this paper it is shown that all pairs of rectangularly visible points in a set of size n can be determined in O(n log n + k) time, where k is the number of reported pairs, using O(n) space. Also, we consider the query problem: Given a set V of points and an arbitrary point p, determine those points in V that are rectangularly visible from p. A dynamic data structure is described that uses O(n log n) space, has a query time of O(k + log2n) and an update time of O(log3 n). Additionally, we extend the results to the 3-dimensional case.  相似文献

Three related rectangle intersection problems in k-dimensional space are considered: (1) find the intersections of a rectangle with a given set of rectangles, (2) find the intersecting pairs of rectangles as they are inserted into or deleted from an existing set of rectangles, and (3) find the intersecting pairs of a given set of rectangles. By transforming these problems into range search problems, one need not divide the intersection problem into two subproblems, namely, the edge-intersecting problem and the containment problem, as done by many previous studies. Furthermore, this approach can also solve these subproblems separately, if required. For the first problem the running time is O((log n)2k−1 + s), where s is the number of intersecting pairs of rectangles. For the second problem the time needed to generate and maintain n rectangles is O(n(log n)2k) and the time for each query is O((log n)2k−1 + s). For the third problem the total time is O(n log n + n(log n)2(k−1) + s) for k ≥ 1.  相似文献

We consider the following problem: given a rectangle containingn points, find the largest perimeter subrectangle whose sides are parallel to those of the original rectangle, whose aspect ratio is below a given bound, and which does not contain any of the given points. Chazelle, Drysdale and Lee have studied a variant of this problem with areas as the quantity to be maximized. They gave anO(nlog3 n) algorithm for that problem. A parallel algorithm for depth-first searching of a directed acyclic graph (DAG) on a shared memory model of a SIMD computer is proposed. The algorithm uses two parallel tree traversal algorithms, one for the preorder traversal and the other for therpostorder traversal of an ordered tree. Each of these traversal algorithms has a time complexity ofO(logn) whenO(n) processors are used,n being the number of vertices in the tree. The parallel depth-first search algorithm for a directed acyclic graphG withn vertices has a time complexity ofO((logn)2) whenO(n 2.81/logn) processors are used.  相似文献

In a paper in Journal of Algorithms13 (1992), 148-160, Hirschberg and Larmore introduced the traveler′s problem as a subroutine for constructing the B-tree. They gave an O(n5/3 log1/3n) time algorithm for solving the traveler′s problem of size n. In this paper, we improve their time bound to O(n3/2 log n). As a consequence, we build a B-tree in O(n3/2 log2n) time as compared to the O(n5/3 log4/3n) time algorithm of Hirschberg and Larmore.  相似文献

Efficient parallel algorithms are presented, on the CREW PRAM model, for generating a succinct encoding of all pairs shortest path information in a directed planar graphG with real-valued edge costs but no negative cycles. We assume that a planar embedding ofG is given, together with a set ofq faces that cover all the vertices. Then our algorithm runs inO(log2 n) time and employsO(nq+M(q)) processors (whereM(t) is the number of processors required to multiply twot×t matrices inO(logt) time). Let us note here that wheneverq<n then our processor bound is better than the best previous one (M(n)).O(log2 n) time,n-processor algorithms are presented for various subproblems, including that of generating all pairs shortest path information in a directedouterplanar graph. Our work is based on the fundamental hammock-decomposition technique of G. Frederickson. We achieve this decomposition inO(logn log*n) parallel time by usingO(n) processors. We present two new algorithms, ADT and MDT, for solving order-n Toeplitz systems of linear equations Tz = b in time O(n log2n) and space O(n). The fastest algorithms previously known, such as Trench's algorithm, require time Ω(n2) and require that all principal submatrices of T be nonsingular. Our algorithm ADT requires only that T be nonsingular. Both our algorithms for Toeplitz systems are derived from algorithms for computing entries in the Padé table for a given power series. We prove that entries in the Padé table can be computed by the Extended Euclidean Algorithm. We describe an algorithm EMGCD (Extended Middle Greatest Common Divisor) which is faster than the algorithm HGCD of Aho, Hopcroft and Ullman, although both require time O(n log2n), and we generalize EMGCD to produce PRSDC (Polynomial Remainder Sequence Divide and Conquer) which produces any iterate in the PRS, not just the middle term, in time O(n log2n). Applying PRSDC to the polynomials U0(x) = x2n+1 and U1(x) = a0 + a1x + … + a2nx2n gives algorithm AD (Anti-Diagonal), which computes any (m, p) entry along the antidiagonal m + p = 2n of the Padé table for U1 in time O(n log2n). Our other algorithm, MD (Main-Diagonal), computes any diagonal entry (n, n) in the Padé table for a normal power series, also in time O(n log2n). MD is related to Schönhage's fast continued fraction algorithm. A Toeplitz matrix T is naturally associated with U1, and the (n, n) Padé approximation to U1 gives the first column of T?1. We show how a formula due to Trench can be used to compute the solution z of Tz = b in time O(n log n) from the first row and column of T?1. Thus, the Padé table algorithms AD and MD give O(n log2n) Toeplitz algorithms ADT and MDT. Trench's formula breaks down in certain degenerate cases, but in such cases a companion formula, the discrete analog of the Christoffel-Darboux formula, is valid and may be used to compute z in time O(n log2n) via the fast computation (by algorithm AD) of at most four Padé approximants. We also apply our results to obtain new complexity bounds for the solution of banded Toeplitz systems and for BCH decoding via Berlekamp's algorithm.  相似文献

Given a univariate polynomialf(z) of degreenwith complex coefficients, whose norms are less than 2min magnitude, the root problem is to find all the roots off(z) up to specified precision 2−μ. Assuming the arithmetic model for computation, we provide an algorithm which has complexityO(nlog5nlogB), whereb= χ + μ, and χ = max{n,m}. This improves on the previous best known algorithm of Pan for the problem, which has complexityO(n2log2nlog(m+ μ)). A remarkable property of our algorithm is that it does not require any assumptions about the root separation off, which were either explicitly, or implicitly, required by previous algorithms. Moreover it also has a work-efficient parallel implementation. We also show that both the sequential and parallel implementations of the algorithm work without modification in the Boolean model of arithmetic. In this case, it follows from root perturbation estimates that we need only specify θ = ⌈n(B+ logn+ 3)⌉ bits of the binary representations of the real and imaginary parts of each of the coefficients off. We also show that by appropriate rounding of intermediate values, we can bound the number of bits required to represent all complex numbers occurring as intermediate quantities in the computation. The result is that we can restrict the numbers we use in every basic arithmetic operation to those having real and imaginary parts with at most φ bits, where[formula]and[formula]Thus, in the Boolean model, the overall work complexity of the algorithm is only increased by a multiplicative factor ofM(φ) (whereM(ψ) =O(ψ(log ψ) log log ψ) is the bit complexity for multiplication of integers of length ψ). The key result on which the algorithm is based, is a new theorem of Coppersmith and Neff relating the geometric distribution of the zeros of a polynomial to the distribution of the zeros of its high order derivatives. We also introduce several new techniques (splitting sets and “centered” points) which hinge on it. We also observe that our root finding algorithm can be efficiently parallelized to run in parallel timeO(log6nlogB) usingnprocessors.  相似文献

The phase I maximum flow and most positive cut methods are used to solve the feasibility problem. Both of these methods take one maximum flow computation. Thus the feasibility problem can be solved using maximum flow algorithms. Let n and m be the number of nodes and arcs, respectively. In this paper, we present an algorithm to solve the feasibility problem with integer lower and upper bounds. The running time of our algorithm is O(mn log (nU)), where U is the value of maximum upper bound. Our algorithm improves the O(m2 log (nU))-time algorithm in [12]. Hence the current algorithm improves the running time in [12] by a factor of n. Sleator and Goldberg’s algorithm is one of the well-known maximum flow algorithms, which runs in O(mn log n) time, see [5]. Under similarity assumption [11], our algorithm runs in O(mn log n) time, which is the running time of Sleator and Goldberg’s algorithm. The merit of our algorithm is that, in the case of infeasibility of the given network, it not only diagnoses infeasibility but also presents some information that is useful to modeler in estimating the maximum cost of adjusting the infeasible network.  相似文献

In this paper we present algorithms, which given a circular arrangement of n uniquely numbered processes, determine the maximum number in a distributive manner. We begin with a simple unidirectional algorithm, in which the number of messages passed is bounded by 2 n log n + O(n). By making several improvements to the simple algorithm, we obtain a unidirectional algorithm in which the number of messages passed is bounded by 1.5nlogn + O(n). These algorithms disprove Hirschberg and Sinclair's conjecture that O(n2) is a lower bound on the number of messages passed in undirectional algorithms for this problem. At the end of the paper we indicate how our methods can be used to improve an algorithm due to Peterson, to obtain a unidirectional algorithm using at most 1.356nlogn + O(n) messages. This is the best bound so far on the number of messages passed in both the bidirectional and unidirectional cases.  相似文献

The sequential algorithm, which is designed based on dynamic programming, runs in timeO(nlogn) and requiresO(n) space. We establish an O(nlog2n) upper bound on the time for deterministic distributed broadcasting in multi-hop radio networks with unknown topology. This nearly matches the known lower bound of Ω(nlogn). The fastest previously known algorithm for this problem works in time O(n3/2). Using our broadcasting algorithm, we develop an O(n3/2log2n) algorithm for gossiping in the same network model.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to provide an efficient solution to the following problem: “Given a family of n rectilinear line segments in two-space report all intersections in the family with a query consisting of an arbitrary rectilinear line segment.” We provide an algorithm which takes O(nlog2n) preprocessing time, o(nlog2n) space and O(log2n + k) query time, where k is the number of reported intersections. This solution serves to introduce a powerful new data structure, the layered segment tree, which is of independent interest. Second it yields, by way of recent dynamization techniques, a solution to the on-line version of the above problem, that is the operations INSERT and DELETE and QUERY with a line segment are allowed. Third it also yields a new nonscanning solution to the batched version of the above problem. Finally we apply these techniques to the problem obtained by replacing “line segment” by “rectangle” in the above problem, giving an efficient solution in this case also.  相似文献

We present a parallel algorithm for finding the convex hull of a sorted set of points in the plane. Our algorithm runs inO(logn/log logn) time usingO(n log logn/logn) processors in theCommon crcw pram computational model, which is shown to be time and cost optimal. The algorithm is based onn 1/3 divide-and-conquer and uses a simple pointer-based data structure.Part of this work was done when the last three authors were at the Department of Computer and Information Science, Linköping University. We prove a theorem on partitioning point sets inE d (d fixed) and give an efficient construction of partition trees based on it. This yields a simplex range searching structure with linear space,O(n logn) deterministic preprocessing time, andO(n 1?1/d (logn) O(1)) query time. WithO(nlogn) preprocessing time, where δ is an arbitrary positive constant, a more complicated data structure yields query timeO(n 1?1/d (log logn) O(1)). An intersection graph of rectangles in the (x, y)-plane with sides parallel to the axes is obtained by representing each rectangle by a vertex and connecting two vertices by an edge if and only if the corresponding rectangles intersect. This paper describes algorithms for two problems on intersection graphs of rectangles in the plane. One is an O(n log n) algorithm for finding the connected components of an intersection graph of n rectangles. This algorithm is optimal to within a constant factor. The other is an O(n log n) algorithm for finding a maximum clique of such a graph. It seems interesting that the maximum clique problem is polynomially solvable, because other related problems, such as the maximum stable set problem and the minimum clique cover problem, are known to be NP-complete for intersection graphs of rectangles. Furthermore, we briefly show that the k-colorability problem on intersection graphs of rectangles is NP-complete.  相似文献
