Amphiphilic diblock copolymer polycaprolactone‐block‐poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PCL‐b‐PGMA) was synthesized via enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Methanol first initiated eROP of ?‐caprolactone (?‐CL) in the presence of biocatalyst Novozyme‐435 under anhydrous conditions. The resulting monohydroxyl‐terminated polycaprolactone (PCL–OH) was subsequently converted to a bromine‐ended macroinitiator (PCL–Br) for ATRP by esterification with α‐bromopropionyl bromide. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). A kinetic analysis of ATRP indicated a living/controlled radical process. The macromolecular structures were characterized for PCL–OH, PCL–Br, and the block copolymers by means of nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analyses indicated that the copolymer composition (?‐CL/GMA) had a great influence on the thermal properties. The well‐defined, amphiphilic diblock copolymer PCL‐b‐PGMA self‐assembled into nanoscale micelles in aqueous solutions, as investigated by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block copolymers composed of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) block and a hydrophobic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) block were synthesized through cationic ring‐opening polymerization with PEG as the precursor. The model reactions indicated that the reactivity of the epoxy groups was higher than that of the double bonds in the bifunctional monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) under the cationic polymerization conditions. Through the control of the reaction time in the synthesis of block copolymer PEG‐b‐PGMA, a linear GMA block was obtained through the ring‐opening polymerization of epoxy groups, whereas the double bond in GMA remained unreacted. The results showed that the molecular weight of the PEG precursor had little influence on the grafting of GMA, and the PGMA blocks almost kept the same length, despite the difference of the PEG blocks. In addition, the PGMA blocks only consisted of several GMA units. The obtained amphiphilic PEG‐b‐PGMA block copolymers could form polymeric core–shell micelles by direct molecular self‐assembly in water. The crosslinking of the PGMA core of the PEG‐b‐PGMA micelles, induced by ultraviolet radiation and heat instead of crosslinking agents, greatly increased the stability of the micelles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined centipede‐like copolymers with poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) as main chain and poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and polystyrene (PSt) as side chains have been synthesized successfully by combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic process includes three steps. (1) Synthesis of PGMA via ATRP; (2) preparation of macroinitiator with one bromine group and a hydroxyl group at every GMA unit of PGMA; (3) ring‐opening polymerization of LLA and ATRP of St to obtain the asymmetric centipede‐like copolymers. The number–average degrees of polymerization of PGMA backbone, PLLA and PSt side chains were determined by 1H‐NMR spectra, and the molecular weights of the resultant intermediates and centipede‐like copolymers were measured by gel permeation chromatography. The molecular weight distributions were narrow and the molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable. The thermal behavior of the centipede‐like copolymers was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter. With the increase of PSt side chain length, the glass transition temperature of PLLA side chains shifted to high temperature, and crystallization ability of PLLA side chains became poor. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) based di‐ and triblock copolymers, with self‐activation and self‐initiation behaviors by incorporation of 2‐(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DEA) blocks, were synthesized via ambient temperature atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The stability of the GMA pendant oxirane rings in tertiary amine environments at ambient temperature was investigated. More importantly, both self‐activation behavior in oxirane ring opening addition reaction and self‐initiation behavior in post‐cure oxirane ring opening crosslinking of these block copolymers were evidenced by 1H NMR studies. The results demonstrated that the reactivity of pendent oxirane rings was strongly dependant on the nucleophilicity and steric hindrance of tertiary amine moieties and temperature. This facilitated the synthesis of well‐defined block copolymers of GMA and DEA via sequential monomer addition ATRP, particularly for polymerization of GMA monomer at ambient temperature. Moreover, these one‐component GMA based block polymers have novel self‐activation and self‐initiation properties, rendering some potential applications in both enzyme immobilization and GMA‐based thermosetting materials. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl 1‐dithionaphthalate (CPDN), was synthesized and applied to the RAFT polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The polymerization was conducted both in bulk and in a solvent with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator at various temperatures. The results for both types of polymerizations showed that GMA could be polymerized in a controlled way by RAFT polymerization with CPDN as a RAFT agent; the polymerization rate was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration, and the molecular weight increased linearly with the monomer conversion up to 96.7% at 60 °C, up to 98.9% at 80 °C in bulk, and up to 64.3% at 60 °C in a benzene solution. The polymerization rate of GMA in bulk was obviously faster than that in a benzene solution. The molecular weights obtained from gel permeation chromatography were close to the theoretical values, and the polydispersities of the polymer were relatively low up to high conversions in all cases. It was confirmed by a chain‐extension reaction that the AIBN‐initiated polymerizations of GMA with CPDN as a RAFT agent were well controlled and were consistent with the RAFT mechanism. The epoxy group remained intact in the polymers after the RAFT polymerization of GMA, as indicated by the 1H NMR spectrum. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Epoxy‐functionalized polystyrene/silica core–shell composite nanoparticles were prepared by the postaddition of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) via emulsion polymerization. The outermost shell of obtained multilayered core–shell particles was made up of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA). A semicontinuous process involving the dropwise addition of GMA was used to avoid demulsification of the emulsion system. The amount of grafted PGMA was quantified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and was altered in a wide range (1–50 wt % to styrene). The binding efficiency was usually high (ca. 90%), indicating strong adhesion between the silica core and the polymer shell. There were approximately four or five original silica beads, which formed a cluster, per composite of nanoparticles whose size was about 60–70 nm. Other main factors of polymerization conditions including the amounts of sodium dodecyl sulfonate and silica are also discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work describes the polymerization of the free secondary amine bearing monomer 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐4‐yl methacrylate (TMPMA) by means of different controlled radical polymerization techniques (ATRP, RAFT, NMP). In particular, reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization enabled a good control at high conversions and a polydispersity index below 1.3, thereby enabling the preparation of well‐defined polymers. Remarkably, the polymerization of the secondary amine bearing methacrylate monomer was not hindered by the presence of the free amine that commonly induces degradation of the RAFT reagent. Subsequent oxidation of the polymer yielded the polyradical poly(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxy‐4‐yl methacrylate), which represents a valuable material used in catalysis as well as for modern batteries. The obtained polymers having a molar mass (Mn) of 10,000–20,000 g/mol were used to fabricate well‐defined, radical‐bearing polymer films by inkjet‐ printing. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A recyclable solid‐state photoinitiator based on the surface modified niobium hydroxide is prepared and successfully introduces into reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization under visible light illumination. It is revealed by gel permeation chromatography analysis that well‐defined polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity index can be achieved when the feed ratio of photoinitiator to the RAFT agent was controlled properly. It is also found that the polymerization is highly responsive to external stimulus and when light is removed from the system polymerization stops almost immediately. In addition, the photoinitiator can be recycled and reused to initiate the polymerization for many times without significant decrease of initiation efficiency. At last, the mechanism for the light initiated polymerization is proposed to illuminate how the initiation and chain propagation proceed. This facile, green and visible light initiation methodology could attract more and more applications in polymer science with the depletion of fossil energy. This investigation reports the atom transfer radical copolymerization (ATRcP) of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA). Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) has easily transformable pendant oxirane group and poly(2‐ethylhexyl acrylate) (PEHA) has very low Tg. They are the important components of coating and adhesive materials. Copolymerization of GMA and EHA was carried out in bulk and in toluene at 70 °C at different molar feed ratios using CuCl as catalyst in combination with 2,2′‐bypyridine (bpy) as well as N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyl diethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as ligand. The molecular weight (Mn) and the polydispersity index (PDI) of the polymers were determined by GPC analysis. The molar composition of the copolymers was determined by 1H NMR analysis. The reactivity ratios of GMA (r1) and EHA (r2) were determined using Finemann‐Ross and Kelen‐Tudos linearization methods and those had been compared with the literature values for conventional free radical copolymerization. The thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by DSC and TGA analysis. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6526–6533, 2009  相似文献

Inspired by the structure character and photosensitive molecular mechanism of natural rhodopsin or bacteriorhodopsin, a novel pH‐liable photosensitive polymer whose chromophores directly bind with Schiff base linkages was designed. Accordingly, 2‐((3‐phenylallylidene)amino)ethyl methacrylate (PAAEMA), 2‐((3‐(4‐fluorophenyl)allylidene)amino)ethyl methacrylate (FPAAEMA), and 2‐((3‐(4‐methoxyphenyl)allylidene)amino)ethyl methacrylate (MPAAEMA) monomers were synthesized. These monomers were polymerized upon irradiating with mild visible light at ambient temperature. The results indicate that Schiff base linkages of these monomers are stable under such mild polymerizing conditions, and the weak absorption of dithioester functionalities in the visible wave range leads to a rapid and well‐controlled RAFT polymerization. The polymerization rate slows down but initialization period significantly shortens on increasing the feed molar ratio of monomer. The pendant electron‐withdrawing‐group‐substituted chromophore improves the reactivity of monomer, but electron‐donating‐group‐substituted chromophore significantly inactivates monomer. Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) may well incorporate in this polymer via RAFT random copolymerization of PAAEMA and GMA monomers due to the comparable reactivity ratios of this monomer pair. PolyMPAAEMA exhibits reversible fluorescence emitting or quenching upon deprotonating or protonating the Schiff base linkages. This fluorescence behavior may be of interest in the fabrication of pH‐responsive photosensors, light modulators, or actuators. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. End group activation of polymers prepared by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was accomplished by conversion of thiocarbonylthio end groups to thiols and subsequent reaction with excess of a bismaleimide. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was prepared by RAFT, and subsequent aminolysis led to sulfhydryl‐terminated polymers that reacted with an excess of 1,8‐bismaleimidodiethyleneglycol to yield maleimido‐terminated macromolecules. The maleimido end groups allowed near‐quantitative coupling with model low molecular weight thiols or dienes by Michael addition or Diels‐Alder reactions, respectively. Reaction of maleimide‐activated PNIPAM with another thiol‐terminated polymer proved an efficient means of preparing block copolymers by a modular coupling approach. Successful end group functionalization of the well‐defined polymers was confirmed by combination of UV–vis, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The general strategy proved to be versatile for the preparation of functional telechelics and modular block copolymers from RAFT‐generated (co)polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymerization of MMA, at ambient temperature, mediated by dansyl chloride is investigated using controlled radical polymerization methods. The solution ATRP results in reasonably controlled polymerization with PDI < 1.3. The SET‐LRP polymerization is less controlled while SET‐RAFT polymerization is controlled producing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with the PDI < 1.3. In all the cases, the polymerization rate followed first order kinetics with respect to monomer conversion and the molecular weight of the polymer increased linearly with conversion. The R group in the CTAs do not appear to play a key role in controlling the propagation rate. SET‐RAFT method appears to be a simpler tool to produce methacrylate polymers, under ambient conditions, in comparison with ATRP and SET‐LRP. Fluorescent diblock copolymers, P(MMA‐b‐PhMA), were synthesized. These were highly fluorescent with two distinguishable emission signatures from the dansyl group and the phenanthren‐1‐yl methacrylate block. The fluorescence emission spectra reveal interesting features such as large red shift when compared to the small molecule. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four well‐defined diblock copolymers and one statistical copolymer based on lauryl methacrylate (LauMA) and 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AEMA) were prepared using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymers were characterized in terms of molecular weights, polydispersity indices (ranging between 1.12 and 1.23) and compositions by size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively. The preparation of the block copolymers was accomplished following a two‐step methodology: First, well‐defined LauMA homopolymers were prepared by RAFT using cumyl dithiobenzoate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization of LauMA followed first‐order kinetics demonstrating the “livingness” of the RAFT process. The pLauMAs were subsequently used as macro‐CTA for the polymerization of AEMA. The glass transition (Tg) and decomposition temperatures (ranging between 200 and 300 °C) of the copolymers were determined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. The Tgs of the LauMA homopolymers were found to be around ?53 °C. Block copolymers exhibited two Tgs suggesting microphase separation in the bulk whereas the statistical copolymer presented a single Tg as expected. Furthermore, the micellization behavior of pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers was investigated in n‐hexane, a selective solvent for the LauMA block, using dynamic light scattering. pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers formed spherical micelles in dilute hexane solutions with hydrodynamic diameters ranging between 30 and 50 nm. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel visible light‐induced living surface grafting polymerization was developed by a strategy in which isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX) was first photoreduced under UV light and sequentially coupled onto the surface of polymeric substrates, and the produced isopropyl thioxanthone‐semipinacol (ITXSP) “dormant” groups were subsequently reactivated under visible light to initiate a surface grafting polymerization. By using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) films as models, a “living” surface grafting polymerization initiated by ITXSP under visible light at room temperature was observed. Both the surface grafting chain length versus grafting conversion of monomer and the grafting polymerization rate versus monomer concentration demonstrated a linear dependence, which is in accord with the known characteristics of living polymerization. The livingness rendered it possible to accurately control the thickness of the grafted layer by simply altering the irradiation time. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Y‐shaped diblock copolymer with a functional block poly(glycidyl methacrylate) was synthesized via the combination of enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic procedure involved eROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) in the presence of biocatalyst Novozyme 435 and initiator 1H,1H,2H,2H‐perfluoro‐1‐octaoxy, subsequently the resulting poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) was converted to a macroinitiator by esterification of it with 2,2‐dichloro acetyl chloride, and finally the ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was conducted at 60 °C with CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst system. By this process, we obtained copolymers with a controlled molecular weight and a low polydispersity. The structure and composition of the obtained polymers were characterized by H NMR, GPC, and IR. Linear first‐order kinetics, linearly increased molecular weight with conversion, and low polydispersities were observed for the ATRP of GMA. The thermal properties of the copolymer were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. The self‐assembly behavior of the Y‐shaped block copolymer was also investigated in different solvents and at different concentrations. The aggregates of various morphologies (spheres, worm‐like patterns, nanowell patterns, and dendritic patterns) were observed. It was found that solvents remarkably influenced the morphologies of the films spin‐coated from the corresponding solutions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Homo‐ and copolymers of di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (DEGMA) and oligo(ethyleneglycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA1100) were synthesized with various chain lengths via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in ethanol using [M]/[RAFT] ratios of 100 and 200. Kinetic investigations on the homo‐ and copolymerization of these monomers were performed using a parallel synthesizer resulting in well‐defined polymers with polydispersity indices mostly below 1.3. The polymerization kinetics are presented and discussed in detail surprisingly revealing that the DEGMA homopolymerization is slower than the OEGMA1100 homopolymerization. Transfer coefficients c were estimated to be ~0.5 for the RAFT polymerization of both DEGMA and OEGMA1100 resulting in hybrid behavior at the beginning of the polymerizations. Subsequent copolymerization also revealed fast incorporation of the OEGMA1100 and relatively slow incorporation of DEGMA resulting in well‐defined copolymers with a molecular weight up to 100 kDa and polydispersities around 1.20. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers of 6‐[4‐(4′‐methoxyphenyl)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities were prepared via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 2‐(2‐cyanopropyl) dithiobenzoate as the RAFT agent. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed that the polymers produced via the RAFT process had a narrower thermal stability range of the liquid‐crystalline mesophase than the polymers formed via conventional free‐radical polymerization. In addition, a chain length dependence of this stability range was found. The generated RAFT polymers displayed optical textures similar to those of polymers produced via conventional free‐radical polymerization. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To improve the tribological performance of nano‐SiC particles filled epoxy composites, surface modification of the fillers is necessary. By means of soapless emulsion polymerization method, graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto the surface of alkyl nano‐SiC was carried out, resulting in composite particles with SiC core and polymeric shell in which polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) is chemically attached to the nanoparticles by the double bonds introduced during the pretreatment with a coupling agent. By analyzing the reaction mechanism, the emulsion polymerization loci were found to be situated at the SiC surface. Also, the factors affecting the grafting yielding of PGMA on the particles were investigated, including monomer concentration, initiator consumption, reaction temperature, reaction time, etc. Accordingly, an optimum grafting reaction condition was determined. It was shown that the grafted nanoparticles exhibit greatly improved dispersibility in good solvent for the grafting polymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
