Linear polyfluorenes with low generation of side benzylether dendrons ( PLG0 , PLG1 ) and hyperbranched polyfluorenes with 1,3,5‐benzene branch unit ( PHG0 and PHG1 ) were prepared by the Suzuki coupling reaction to investigate the structural effect on optoelectronic properties. Their optical properties, both in solution and film state, were investigated using absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The excimer emission of polyfluorene at about 530 nm, induced by thermal annealing, was completely suppressed by the hyperbranched structure, but the suppression was not obvious by the side benzylether dendrons. The optoelectronic performance of the EL devices (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al) was strongly dependent upon chemical structures of the emitting polyfluorenes. The hyperbranched PHG0 with zero generation of benzylether side groups revealed the best device performance, with maximal luminance and maximal luminance efficiency of 2350 cd/m2 and 0.33 cd/A, respectively. The results suggest that incorporation of branch units with low generation of benzylether dendrons is an effective way to improve annealing stability and EL performance of the polyfluorenes. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2,5‐Bis(2‐bromofluorene‐7‐yl)silole was prepared by a modified one‐pot synthesis with a reverse addition procedure, from which novel silole‐containing polyfluorenes with binary random and alternating structures (silole contents between 4.5 and 25% and high Mw up to 509 kDa were successfully synthesized. The well‐defined repeating unit of the alternating copolymer comprises a terfluorene and a silole ring. Optoelectronic properties including UV absorption, electrochemistry, photoluminescence (PL), and electroluminescence (EL) of the copolymers were examined. The different excitation energy transfers from fluorene to silole of the copolymers in solution and in the solid state were compared. The films of the copolymers showed silole‐dominant green emissions with high absolute PL quantum yields up to 83%. EL devices of the copolymers with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT/copolymer/Ba/Al displayed exclusive silole emissions peaked at around 543 nm and the highest EL efficiency was achieved with the alternating copolymer. Using the alternating copolymer and poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) as the blend‐type emissive layer, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.99% (four times to that of the neat film) was realized, which was a high efficiency so far reported for silole‐containing polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel conjugated copolymers based on 9,9‐dioctylfluorene and bisphenazine (BP) were synthesized by Suzuki polymerization. Energy transfer from the conjugated main chain to the BP moieties was observed. Full energy transfer was achieved when the molar content of the bisphenazine was 20% (20BPPF) in toluene solution. The similar phenomena were observed even for 1% bisphenazine content copolymer (1BPPF) in film. The lowest occupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels (?3.06 eV) of the copolymers were lower than that of the polyfluorene homopolymer (PFO; ?2.65 eV), indicating that the introduction of the BP unit was benefit to electron injection. Single‐layer electroluminescent devices (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/LiF/Al) were fabricated to investigate their electroluminescence (EL) performances. The maximum brightness and current efficiency of all BPPF copolymers surpassed the PFO homopolymer. The best single‐layer device was based on 5BPPF, with a maximum brightness of 1532 cd/m2 and current efficiency of 1.09 cd/A. Much higher efficiency could be achieved for multilayer EL devices of 5BPPF (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK/polymer/TPBI/LiF/Al), which showed a maximum current efficiency of 10.01 cd/A. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new hyperbranched ( P1 ) and linear copolyfluorene ( P2 ) were prepared from 2,4,7‐trifunctional (branching) and 2,7‐bifunctional fluorene monomer, respectively, by the Wittig reaction, followed with end‐capping by aromatic oxadiazole groups, to study the effect of hyperbranch structure. The weight‐average molecular weights (Mw) of P1 and P2 , determined by gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as standard, were 33,000 and 25,700, respectively. The polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents and exhibited good thermal stability (Td > 400 °C). Optical properties, both in solution and film state, were investigated using absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. In film state, the absorption and PL spectra peaked at 401–425 nm and 480–495 nm, respectively. The P1 showed energy funnel effect and enhanced fluorescence efficiency owing to hyperbranched structure and terminal oxadiazole groups. The HOMO and LUMO levels of P1 ( P2) , estimated from cyclic voltammograms, are ?5.34 (?5.25) eV and ?2.94 (?2.94) eV, respectively. Two‐layer polymer light‐emitting diodes devices (ITO/PEDOT/ P1 /Ca/Al) exhibited maximal luminance and luminous efficiency of 3630 cd/m2 and 0.78 cd/A, respectively, which are superior to its linear counterpart P2 (598 cd/m2, 0.11 cd/A). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two alternating copolymers, poly[(2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)‐pyridine‐5,5′‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)], PFO‐TPy25T, and poly[(2,6‐di(2‐thienyl)‐pyridine‐5,5′‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)], PFO‐TPy26T, were synthesized by the Pd‐catalyzed Suzuki polymerization method. The pyridine units are present as trimeric monomers in these copolymers and have different connectivities to their two neighboring thiophenes, para‐ and meta‐linkages. We investigated the variations in the optical and electrochemical properties of the copolymers that arise from these different connectivities. The two polymers exhibit 5% weight loss above 410 °C and high glass transition temperatures (Tg: 113 °C for PFO‐TPy25T, 142 °C for PFO‐TPy26T). The UV–vis absorption maximum peaks of PFO‐TPy25T and PFO‐TPy26T in the solid state were found to be 449 and 398 nm respectively, with photoluminescence maximum peaks in the solid state of 573 and 490 nm respectively. Using cyclic voltammetry, we determined their energy band gaps: 3.08 eV for PFO‐TPy25T and 3.49 eV for PFO‐TPy25T. The cyclic voltammetry study of these polymers revealed that there are some differences. The electroluminescence (EL) properties of the copolymers were measured for the device configuration of ITO/PEDOT/polymers/Ca/Al. The device fabricated with the polymer containing 2,5‐pyridine exhibits pale orange emission, whereas the device fabricated with the polymer containing 2,6‐pyridine exhibits pale blue emission. The EL device fabricated with PFO‐TPy25T has a higher brightness (2010 cd/m2) and external quantum efficiency (0.1%) than the PFO‐TPy26T device (260 cd/m2, 0.008%), because it has a smaller energy barrier to the injection of charges from PEDOT and Ca into the HOMO and LUMO levels. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report here the synthesis via Suzuki polymerization of two novel alternating polymers containing 9,9‐dioctylfluorene and electron‐withdrawing 4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole moieties, poly[(4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole‐5,5′‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)] (PHBTzF) and poly[(5,5′‐bis(2″‐thienyl)‐4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole‐5″,5″‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)] (PTHBTzTF), and their application to electronic devices. The ultraviolet–visible absorption maxima of films of PHBTzF and PTHBTzTF were 413 and 471 nm, respectively, and the photoluminescence maxima were 513 and 590 nm, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry experiment showed an improvement in the n‐doping stability of the polymers and a reduction of their lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels as a result of bithiazole in the polymers' main chain. The highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels of the polymers were ?5.85 eV for PHBTzF and ?5.53 eV for PTHBTzTF. Conventional polymeric light‐emitting‐diode devices were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al configuration [where ITO is indium tin oxide and PEDOT:PSS is poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrenesulfonic acid)] with the two polymers as emitting layers. The PHBTzF device exhibited a maximum luminance of 210 cd/m2 and a turn‐on voltage of 9.4 V, whereas the PTHBTzTF device exhibited a maximum luminance of 1840 cd/m2 and a turn‐on voltage of 5.4 V. In addition, a preliminary organic solar‐cell device with the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/(PTHBTzTF + C60)/Ca/Al configuration (where C60 is fullerene) was also fabricated. Under 100 mW/cm2 of air mass 1.5 white‐light illumination, the device produced an open‐circuit voltage of 0.76 V and a short‐circuit current of 1.70 mA/cm2. The fill factor of the device was 0.40, and the power conversion efficiency was 0.52%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 1845–1857, 2005 相似文献

New series of hyperbranched polyfluorenes containing triarylpyrazoline cores, PFZ10 , PFZ20 , PFNZ10 , and PFNZ20 , have been synthesized according to the “A2 + A′2 + B3” Suzuki coupling method. The structures and property of the monomers and conjugated polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography, cyclic voltammetry, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and UV–visible absorption, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and photoluminescence spectroscopies. All these polymers exhibited good solubility in common organic solvents and good thermal stability. The long‐wavelength emission of polyfluorenes had been effectively reduced in these hyperbranched polymers. Standard polymer light emitting devices (PLEDs) from PFZ10 , PFZ20 , PFNZ10 , and PFNZ20 , with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT/polymer/TPBI/Alq3/Mg:Ag, exhibited good electroluminescence (EL) properties The PLED based on PFNZ10 emitted pure blue light with a low turn‐on voltage of 5.3 V and a high EL efficiency of about 1.93%. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel blue‐emitting germanium‐containing poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) derivatives with well‐defined conjugation lengths were synthesized via Wittig‐condensation polymerizations. The polymers can be color‐tuned by the introduction of various chromophores into the PPV‐based polymer backbones. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the polymers, GePVK (containing carbazole moieties), GeMEH (containing dialkoxybenzene moieties), and GePTH (containing phenothiazine moieties), were found to exhibit blue, greenish blue, and green emissions, respectively. GePTH produces more red‐shifted emission than GeMEH and GEPVK, resulting in green emission, and the solution and solid state PL spectra of GePVK consist of almost blue emission. The electroluminescence spectra of GeMEH and GePTH contain yellowy green and yellow colors, respectively. Interestingly, GePVK exhibits white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.37) due to electroplex emission in the light‐emitting diodes. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of new copolyfluorenes ( PFTP, PFTT ) were prepared by the Suzuki coupling reaction from two green‐emitting dibromo monomers (TP‐Br, TT‐Br) based on triphenylamine unit to be applied in white light electroluminescent devices. They were characterized by molecular weight determination, elemental analysis, DSC, TGA, absorption and photoluminescence spectra, and cyclic voltammetry. The estimated actual contents of the TP and TT chromophores were lower than 7.8 mol % and 1.9 mol % for PFTP and PFTT , respectively. In film state both copolyfluorenes showed photoluminescence at 400–470 and 470–600 nm originated from fluorene segments and the chromophores, respectively, due to incomplete energy transfer. Light‐emitting diodes with a structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/copolymer/Ca(50 nm)/Al(100 nm) showed major emission at 493–525 nm, plus minor emission at 400–470 nm when chromophore contents were low. The maximum brightness and maximum current efficiency of PFTP2 device were 8370 cd/m2 and 1.47 cd/A, whereas those of PFTT1 device were 9440 cd/m2 and 1.77 cd/A, respectively. Tri‐wavelength white‐light emission was realized through blending PFTT1 with poly(9,9‐dihexylfluorene) and a red‐emitting iridium complex, in which the maximum brightness and CIE coordinates were 6880 cd/m2 and (0.31, 0.33), respectively. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four copolyfluorenes chemically doped with 0.1 and 1 mol % 3,7‐bis[2‐thiophene‐2‐yl)‐2‐cyanovinyl]phenothiazine ( PFPhT ) or 2,5‐bis[2‐(thiophene‐2‐yl)‐2‐cyanovinyl]thiophene chromophores ( PFThT ) were synthesized using the Suzuki coupling reaction and applied in white‐light‐emitting devices. They were characterized by GPC, elemental analysis, DSC, TGA, optical spectra, and cyclic voltammetry. They exhibited good thermal stability (Td > 420 °C) and moderate glass transition temperatures (>95 °C). The PhT‐Br and ThT‐Br showed PL peaks at 586 and 522 nm (with a shoulder at 550 nm). In film state, PL spectra of the copolymers comprised emissions from the fluorene segments and the chromophores due to incomplete energy transfer. Both monomers exhibited low LUMO levels around ?3.50 to ?3.59 eV, whereas the PhT‐Br owned the higher HOMO level (?5.16 eV) due to its electron‐donating phenothiazine core. Light‐emitting diodes with a structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/copolymer/Ca(50 nm)/Al(100 nm) showed broad emission depending on the chromophore contents. The maximum brightness and maximum current efficiency of PFPhT2 ( PFThT1 ) device were 8690 cd/m2 and 1.43 cd/A (7060 cd/m2 and 0.98 cd/A), respectively. White‐light emission was realized by further blending PFPhT2 with poly(9,9‐dihexylfluorene) (w/w = 10/1), with the maximum brightness and maximum current efficiency being 10,600 cd/m2 and 1.85 cd/A. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We reported a new way to synthesize single‐chain white light‐emitting polyfluorene (WPF) with an increased molecular weight using azide‐alkyne click reaction. Four basic polymers with specific end‐capping, which exhibited high‐glass transition temperatures (Tg > 100 °C) and excellent thermal stability, were used as foundations of the WPF's synthesis; a blue‐light polymer (PFB2) end‐capped with azide groups can easily react with acetylene end‐capped polymers (PFB1, PFG1, and PFR1, which are emitting blue‐, green‐ and red‐light, respectively) to form triazole‐ring linkages in polar solvents such as N,N‐dimethylforamide/toluene co‐solvent at moderate temperature of 100 °C, even without metal‐catalyst. Several WPFs that consist of these four basic polymers in certain ratios were derived, and the polymer light‐emitting diode device based on the high‐molecular weight WPF was achieved and demonstrated a maximum brightness of 7551 cd/m2 (at 12.5 V) and a maximum yield of 5.5 cd/A with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.30, 0.33) using fine‐tuned WPF5 as emitting material. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of fluorene‐based copolymers composed of blue‐ and orange‐light‐emitting comonomers were synthesized through palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki coupling reactions. 9,9‐Dihexylfluorene and 2‐(2,6‐bis‐{2‐[1‐(9,9‐dihexyl‐9H‐fluoren‐2‐yl)‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroquinolin‐6‐yl]‐vinyl}‐pyran‐4‐ylidene)‐malononitrile (DCMF) were used as the blue‐ and orange‐light‐emitting chromophores, respectively. The resulting single polymers exhibited simultaneous blue (423/450 nm) and orange (580–600 nm) emissions from these two chromophores. By adjusting the fluorene and DCMF contents, white light emission could be obtained from a single polymer; a device with an ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al configuration was found to exhibit pure white electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.31), a maximum brightness of 1180 cd/m2, and a current efficiency of 0.60 cd/A. Furthermore, the white light emission of this device was found to be very stable with respect to variation of the driving voltage. The CIE coordinates of the device were (0.32, 0.29), (0.32, 0.29), and (0.33, 0.31) for driving voltages of 7, 8, and 10 V, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel conjugated polyfluorene copolymers, poly[9,9‐dihexylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐co‐(2,5‐bis(4′‐diphenylaminostyryl)‐phenylene‐1,4‐diyl)]s (PGs), have been synthesized by nickel(0)‐mediated polymerization from 2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐dihexylfluorene and 1,4′‐dibromo‐2,5‐bis(4‐diphenylaminostyryl)benzene with various molar ratios of the monomers. Because of the incorporation of triphenylamine (TPA) moieties, PGs exhibit much higher HOMO levels than the corresponding polyfluorene homopolymers and are able to facilitate hole injection into the polymer layer from the anode electrode in light‐emitting diodes. Conventional polymeric light‐emitting devices with the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al have been fabricated. A light‐emitting device produced with one of the PG copolymers (PG10) as the emitting layer exhibited a voltage‐independent and stable bluish‐green emission with color coordinates of (0.22, 0.42) at 5 V. The maximum brightness and current efficiency of the PG10 device were 3370 cd/m2 (at 9.6 V) and 0.6 cd/A, respectively. To realize a white polymeric light‐emitting diode, PG10 as the host material was blended with 1.0 wt % of a red‐light‐emitting polymer, poly[9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis(2‐thienyl‐2‐cyanovinyl)‐1‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐4‐methoxybenzene‐5′,5′‐diyl] (PFR4‐S), and poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] (MEH‐PPV). The device based on PG10:PFR4‐S showed an almost perfect pure white electroluminescence emission, with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.36) at 8 V; for the PG10:MEH‐PPV device, the CIE coordinates at this voltage were (0.30, 0.40) with a maximum brightness of 1930 cd/m2. Moreover, the white‐light emission from the PG10:PFR4‐S device was stable even at different driving voltages and had CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.36) at 6 V and (0.31, 0.35) at 10 V. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of poly(2,3‐diphenyl‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene) derivatives containing dendritic side groups were synthesized. Different generations of dendrons were integrated on the pendant phenyl ring to investigate their effect on optical and electrical properties of final polymers. Homopolymers can not be obtained via the Gilch polymerization because of sterically bulky dendrons. By controlling the feed ratio of different monomers during polymerization, dendron‐containing copolymers with high molecular weights were obtained. The UV–vis absorption and photoluminescent spectra of the thin films are pretty close; however, quantum efficiency is significantly enhanced with increasing the generation of dendrons. The electrochemical analysis reveals that hole‐injection is also improved by increasing dendritic generation. Double‐layer light‐emitting devices with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al were fabricated. Attachment of triarylamino‐functional groups at the 9‐position of 2,7‐linked carbazole polymers results in blue‐emitting materials with two independent redox processes that were attributed to the triarylamino groups and the polymer backbone, respectively. This new class of blue‐emitting conjugated polymers was prepared via a Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction and showed low turn‐on voltages in electroluminescent devices as a result of their low ionisation potentials. The photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescent properties of these materials are discussed.

A novel series of soluble hyperbranched interrupted π‐conjugated polymers (HICPs) based on complicated 9,9‐diarylfluorenes (CDAFs) branching core and end‐capped with high carrier‐mobility pyrene moieties were synthesized via the “A2 + A′2 + B3” type Suzuki coupling condensation. The new polymer architecture improves the spectrum stability than the corresponding linear and hyperbranched polymers in PLEDs. Besides, it overcomes the drawback of high driving voltage of common interrupted π‐conjugated polymers. CDAF1 exhibits excellent thermal and morphological stability with a decomposition temperature (Td) higher than 445 °C and a glass transition temperature (Tg) up to 128 °C. No obvious low‐energy green emission band at 520 nm was observed under extreme thermal annealing conditions in air at 200 °C for 12 h. The CDAF1 device shows stable blue emission with the peak at 422 and 447 nm. The Commission International d'Eclairage (CIE) 1931 coordinates is (0.18, 0.16) and the brightness reaches 1051 cd/m2 at 15.7 V. White PLED based on CDAF1/MEH‐PPV blends exhibits a low turn‐on voltage of 4.8 V with voltage‐independent CIE of (0.32, 0.32). Molecular simulations were used to investigate the conformation and interchain interaction. HICPs based on CDAFs tethered with high‐mobility moieties are promising stable blue and host materials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6451–6462, 2009 相似文献

We synthesized two fluorene‐based copolymers poly[(2,5‐bis(4‐hexylthiophen‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐day]thiazole‐5,5′‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9′‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)] ( PF‐TTZT), and poly[(5,5′‐bis(4‐hexylthiophen‐2‐yl)‐2,2′‐bithiazole‐5,5′‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9′‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)] (PF‐TBTT), which contain the electron‐withdrawing moieties, thiazolothiazole, and bithiazole, respectively. Through electrochemical studies, we found that these two polymers exhibit stable reversible oxidation and reduction behaviors. Moreover, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of PF‐TBTT are lower than those of PF‐TTZT, and the bandgap of PF‐TBTT is smaller than that of PF‐TTZT. Thus the bithiazole moiety in PF‐TBTT is more electron‐withdrawing than the thiazolothiazole moiety in PF‐TTZT. Light‐emitting devices with indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4‐ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT)/polymer/bis(2‐methyl‐8‐quinolinato)‐4‐phenylphenolate aluminum (BAlq)/LiF/Al configurations were fabricated. The performance of the PF‐TBTT device was found to be almost three times better than that of the PF‐TTZT device, which is because electron injection from the cathode to PF‐TBTT is much easier than for PF‐TTZT. We also investigated the planarity and frontier orbitals of the electron donor‐acceptor (D‐A) moieties with computational calculations using ab initio Hartree–Fock with the split‐valence 6‐31G* basis set. These calculations show that TBTT has a more nonplanar structure than TTZT and that the bithiazole moiety is more electron‐withdrawing than thiazolothiazole. These calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 7148–7161, 2008 相似文献

New poly(phenylene vinylene) derivatives with a 5‐diphenylamino‐1,3‐phenylene linkage (including polymers 2 , 3 , and 5 ) have been synthesized to improve the charge‐injection properties. These polymers are highly photoluminescent with fluorescent quantum yields as high as 76% in tetrahydrofuran solutions. With effective π‐conjugation interruption at adjacent m‐phenylene units, chromophores of different conjugation lengths can be incorporated into the polymer chain in a controllable manner. In polymer 2 , the structural regularity leads to an isolated, well‐defined emitting chromophore. Isomeric polymer 3 of a random chain sequence, however, allows the effective emitting chromophores to be joined in sequence by sharing a common m‐phenylene linkage (as shown in a molecular fragment). Double‐layer light‐emitting‐diode devices using 2 , 3 , and 5 as emitting layers have turn‐on voltages of about 3.5 V and produce blue‐green emissions with peaks at 493, 492, and 482 nm and external quantum efficiencies up to 1.42, 0.98, and 1.53%, respectively. In comparison with a light‐emitting diode using 2 , a device using 3 shows improved charge injection and displays increased brightness by a factor of ~3 to 1400 cd/m2 at an 8‐V bias. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of fluorene derivatives containing nonsymmetric and bulky aromatic groups at C‐9 position were synthesized and used for the preparation of blue‐light‐emitting copolyfluorenes ( P1 – P4 ) by the Suzuki coupling polycondensation. The copolymers were characterized by molecular weight determination, elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, absorption and emission spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry. Their decomposition temperatures and glass transition temperatures are 423–441 °C and >120 °C, respectively. In film state, the copolyfluorenes exhibit blue photoluminescence at 425–450 nm, which remains almost unchanged after annealing at 200 °C in air for 60 min. Polymer light‐emitting diodes [ITO/PEDOT:PSS/ P1 – P4 /Ca(50 nm)/Al(100 nm)] show stable blue‐light emission under device operation with the CIE co‐ordinates being between (0.16, 0.07) and (0.17, 0.09). The light‐emitting diodes devices from P1 and P3 containing electron‐deficient oxadiazole units display enhanced performance, with the maximum brightness and maximum current efficiency being (4510 cd/m2 and 2.40 cd/A) and (2930 cd/m2, 1.19 cd/A), respectively. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
