The copolymers of 2‐methoxy‐5‐2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene (MEH‐PV) and 2,3‐diphenyl‐5‐octyl‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene were prepared via the Gilch route with their chain compositions and the reactivity ratios of the monomers estimated by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results indicated that the copolymers tended to form an alternative copolymer as the feed ratio of the monomers closed to one‐half. When an individual copolymer solution in tetrahydrofuran was spun‐cast to form a film, the MEH‐PV units were able to attract the like units from the adjacent chains. As a result, the ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrum of the alternative copolymer in film form was broader than the spectra of those with different compositions. The photoluminescence spectra of the copolymers in film form exhibited the characteristic shoulder of poly(2‐methoxy‐5‐2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene), even though the content of MEH‐PV units was not great enough for the formation of repeat units in sequence. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of naphthyl‐substituted poly(p‐phenylenevinylene)s (2N‐PPV, 4N‐PPV, and NAP‐PPV) has been synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. The polymers possess excellent solubility, high molecular weights, good thermal stability, and high photoluminescence efficiencies. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals the onset of degradation to be 347, 301, and 306 °C for 2N‐PPV, 4N‐PPV, and NAP‐PPV, respectively. The differential scanning calorimetry investigation gives the respective glass‐transition temperature values of 118, 135, and 141 °C. The UV and photoluminescence spectra measurements reveal that the polymers exhibit similar optical properties, indicating that side‐chain substitution has little effect on the optical properties of this series of polymers. Proton NMR measurement of the signal due to tolane–bisbenzyl defects at around 2.7 ppm indicates that all the polymers have negligible amounts of tolane–bisbenzyl defects along the polymer main chain as a result of the steric bulk imposed by the naphthalene side chain. The highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of the polymers are investigated through cyclic voltammetry. Polymer light‐emitting diodes utilizing the polymers as the emissive layer with a configuration of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/polymer/Ba/Al are fabricated and evaluated. The diodes emit blue‐green to yellow‐green light with maximum peaks at 518, 542, and 486 nm for 2N‐PPV, 4N‐PPV, and NAP‐PPV, respectively. The respective turn‐on electric fields of the diodes are 0.84, 0.69, and 0.83 MV/cm and the respective maximum external quantum efficiencies are 0.08, 0.54, and 0.02%. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel conjugated polyfluorene copolymers, poly[9,9‐dihexylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐co‐(2,5‐bis(4′‐diphenylaminostyryl)‐phenylene‐1,4‐diyl)]s (PGs), have been synthesized by nickel(0)‐mediated polymerization from 2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐dihexylfluorene and 1,4′‐dibromo‐2,5‐bis(4‐diphenylaminostyryl)benzene with various molar ratios of the monomers. Because of the incorporation of triphenylamine (TPA) moieties, PGs exhibit much higher HOMO levels than the corresponding polyfluorene homopolymers and are able to facilitate hole injection into the polymer layer from the anode electrode in light‐emitting diodes. Conventional polymeric light‐emitting devices with the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al have been fabricated. A light‐emitting device produced with one of the PG copolymers (PG10) as the emitting layer exhibited a voltage‐independent and stable bluish‐green emission with color coordinates of (0.22, 0.42) at 5 V. The maximum brightness and current efficiency of the PG10 device were 3370 cd/m2 (at 9.6 V) and 0.6 cd/A, respectively. To realize a white polymeric light‐emitting diode, PG10 as the host material was blended with 1.0 wt % of a red‐light‐emitting polymer, poly[9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis(2‐thienyl‐2‐cyanovinyl)‐1‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐4‐methoxybenzene‐5′,5′‐diyl] (PFR4‐S), and poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] (MEH‐PPV). The device based on PG10:PFR4‐S showed an almost perfect pure white electroluminescence emission, with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.36) at 8 V; for the PG10:MEH‐PPV device, the CIE coordinates at this voltage were (0.30, 0.40) with a maximum brightness of 1930 cd/m2. Moreover, the white‐light emission from the PG10:PFR4‐S device was stable even at different driving voltages and had CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.36) at 6 V and (0.31, 0.35) at 10 V. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐p‐phenylenevinylene] (MEH‐PPV) with a molar mass of 26–47 × 104 g mol?1 and a polydispersity of 2.5–3.2 was synthesized by a liquid–solid two‐phase reaction. The liquid phase was tetrahydrofuran (THF) containing 1,4‐bis(chloromethyl)‐2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)benzene as the monomer and a certain amount of tetrabutylammonium bromide as a phase‐transfer catalyst. The solid phase consisted of potassium hydroxide particles with diameters smaller than 0.5 mm. The reaction was carried out at a low temperature of 0 °C and under nitrogen protection. No gelation was observed during the polymerization process, and the polymer was soluble in the usual organic solvents, such as chloroform, toluene, THF, and xylene. A polymer light‐emitting diode was fabricated with MEH‐PPV as an active luminescent layer. The device had an indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxylthiophene) (PEDOT)/MEH‐PPV/Ba/Al configuration. It showed a turn‐on voltage of 3.3 V, a luminescence intensity at 6.1 V of 550 cd/m2, a luminescence efficiency of 0.43 cd/A, and a quantum efficiency of 0.57%. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The presence of cis‐vinylene bonds in Gilch‐polymerized poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylene vinylene] is reported. Through fractionation, species with a weight‐average molecular weight of less than 37,000 exhibited an abnormal blueshift of photoluminescence spectra in toluene solutions, and this was attributed to the presence of cis‐vinylene bonds, as verified by NMR spectroscopy. Surprisingly, the fractionated species (~1 wt %) with a weight‐average molecular weight of 5000 were mostly linked by the cis‐vinylene bonds. The concentration decreased with the molecular weight until a molecular weight of 37,000 was reached; at that point, the polymer chains contained mainly trans‐vinylene bonds. Obviously, the formation of cis‐vinylene bonds strongly inhibited the growth of polymer chains during Gilch polymerization. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A conjugated poly(p‐CN‐phenylenevinylene) (PCNPV) containing both electron‐donating triphenylamine units and electron‐withdrawing cyano groups was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation in a good yield. Gel permeation chromatography suggested that the soluble polymer had a very high weight‐average molecular weight of 309,000. A bright and saturated red emission was observed under UV excitation in solution and film. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the polymer presented quasi‐reversible oxidation with a relatively low potential because of the triphenylamine unit. A single‐layer indium tin oxide/PCNPV/Mg–Ag device emitted a bright red light (633 nm). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 3947–3953, 2004  相似文献

A significant improvement in the electroluminescence (EL) properties was observed for a poly{5‐methoxy‐2‐[(2′‐ethyl‐hexyl)‐oxy]‐p‐phenylenevinylene} (MEH–PPV)/poly(2,3‐diphenyl‐5‐octyl‐p‐phenylenevinylene) (DPO–PPV) blend after a thermal treatment at 200 °C for 2 h in vacuo to furnish the chemical bonding between polymer chains. 1H NMR spectroscopy and two‐photon excitation microscopy revealed that the chemical bonding turned the immiscible polyblend into a system more like a block copolymer with a vertically segregated morphology. Because both the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital levels of MEH–PPV in the wetting layer were higher than those of DPO–PPV in the upper layer, the heterojunction between the two layers of the polymers fit the category of so‐called type II heterojunctions. As a result, the turn‐on voltage of the polymer light‐emitting diode prepared with the thermally treated polyblend decreased to ~0.6 V, and the EL emission intensities and quantum efficiencies increased to about 4 times those of the untreated polyblend. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of light‐emitting hyperbranched poly(arylene ethynylene)s (HB‐PAEs) were prepared by the Sonogashira coupling from bisethynyl of carbazole, fluorene, or dialkoxybenzenes (A2 type) and tris(4‐iodophenyl)amine (B3 type). For comparison, two linear polymers (L‐PAEs) of the HB analogs were also synthesized. The polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, NMR, and GPC. The HB polymers showed excellent solubility in chloroform, THF, and chlorobenzene when compared with their linear analogs. The number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of the polymers determined from GPC was found to be in the range of 18,600–34,200. The polymers were thermally stable up to 298–330 °C with only 5% weight loss. The absorption maxima of the polymers were between 354 and 411 nm with optical band gap in the range of 2.5–2.9 eV. The HB polymers were found to be highly fluorescent with photoluminescence quantum yields around 33–42%. The highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels of the polymers calculated from onset oxidation potentials were found to be in the range from ?5.83 to ?6.20 eV. Electroluminescence (EL) properties of three HB‐PAEs and one L‐PAE were investigated with device configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Polymer/LiF/Al. The EL maxima of HB‐PAEs were found to be in the range of 507–558 nm with turn‐on voltages around 7.5–10 V and maximum brightness values of 316–490 cd/m2. At the same time, linear analog of one HB‐PAE was found to show a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2 at a turn‐on voltage of 8.2 V. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To simplify the fabrication of multilayer light‐emitting diodes, we prepared a p‐phenylenevinylene‐based polymer capped with crosslinkable styrene through a Wittig reaction. Insoluble poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) derivative (PPVD) films were prepared by a thermal treatment. The photoluminescence and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorbance of crosslinked films and noncrosslinked films were studied. We also studied the solvent resistance of crosslinked PPV films with UV–vis absorption spectra and atomic force microscopy. Double‐layer devices using crosslinked PPVD as an emitting layer, 2‐(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐5‐phenyl‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole (PBD) in poly(methyl methacrylate) as an electron‐transporting layer, and calcium as a cathode were fabricated. A maximum luminance efficiency of 0.70 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 740 cd/m2 at 16 V were demonstrated. A 12‐fold improvement in the luminance efficiency with respect to that of single‐layer devices was realized. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Substituent‐induced electroluminescence polymers—poly[2‐(2‐dimethyldodecylsilylphenyl)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] [(o‐R3Si)PhPPV], poly[2‐(3‐dimethyldodecylsilylphenyl)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] [(m‐R3Si)PhPPV], and poly[2‐(4‐dimethyldodecylsilylphenyl)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] [(p‐R3Si)PhPPV]—were synthesized according to the Gilch polymerization method. The band gap and spectroscopic data were tuned by the dimethyldodecylsilyl substituent being changed from the ortho position to the para position in the phenyl side group along the polymer backbone. The weight‐average molecular weights and polydispersities were 8.0–96 × 104 and 3.0–3.4, respectively. The maximum photoluminescence wavelengths for (o‐R3Si)PhPPV, (m‐R3Si)PhPPV, and (p‐R3Si)PhPPV appeared around 500–530 nm in the green emission region. Double‐layer light‐emitting diodes with an indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/polymer/Al configuration were fabricated with these polymers. The turn‐on voltages and the maximum brightness of (o‐R3Si)PhPPV, (m‐R3Si)PhPPV, and (p‐R3Si)PhPPV were 6.5–8.7 V and 1986–5895 cd/m2, respectively. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) derivatives were prepared by Heck coupling. They contained alternating conjugated segments on the basis of p‐distyrylbenzene and flexible nonconjugated spacers. The synthesized polymers P1 and P2 carried two m‐terphenyl of four tertbutyl pendants, respectively, per repeat unit. Both polymers were amorphous and exhibited satisfactory thermal stability. Polymer P1 displayed a limited solubility in common organic solvents, whereas P2 dissolved readily in these solvents. The glass‐transition temperature values were 128 °C for P1 and 37 °C for P2 . The polymers emitted blue or violet‐blue light with photoluminescent maxima at about 445 and 460 nm for solutions and thin films, respectively. The bulky pendants reduced their tendency to form aggregates. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1091–1098, 2003  相似文献

Novel poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) copolymers derived from 1‐methoxy‐4‐octyloxyphenylene (MOP), 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole (BT), and trans‐1,2‐bis(tributylstannyl)ethylene were first prepared by a palladium‐catalyzed Stille coupling reaction. The feed ratios of MOP to BT were 99.5:0.5, 99:1, 95:5, 85:15, 70:30, and 50:50. An efficient energy transfer from the 2‐methoxy‐5‐octyloxy‐p‐phenylenevinylene segment to the narrow‐band‐gap units was observed. The poly(2‐methoxy‐5‐octyloxy‐p‐phenylenevinylene‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazolevinylene) copolymers emitted deep red light. The maximum electroluminescence emission of these PPV copolymers occurred at 659–724 nm and was accompanied by gradual redshifting with an increasing BT concentration. The photophysical properties were examined in comparison with those of copolymers based on BT and fluorene or N‐alkylcarbazole doped with the same BT concentration in the copolymer main chain. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel conjugated poly[(fluorene‐2,7‐vinylene)‐alt‐(1,4‐phenylenevinylene)] derivative 2 with quaternizable tertiary amino groups was synthesized by Heck coupling of a substituted 2,7‐dibromofluorene and 1,4‐dialkoxy‐2,5‐divinylbenzene. The corresponding quaternary ammonium cationic polyelectrolyte 3 was obtained by the treatment of 2 with bromoethane. Both polymers were soluble in common organic solvents, like tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, and dichloromethane. Polymer 3 showed a limited solubility in alcohols and was insoluble in water. Photophysical and electrochemical properties of the resulting polymers were fully investigated. An intensive green photoluminescence (PL) with maxima at 550 and 545 nm was observed from thin films of 2 and 3 polymers, respectively, red‐shifted compared with the PL emission spectra measured in the solution. The electrochemical band gaps were 2.38–2.45 eV. Single‐layer and double‐layer (with poly[3,4‐(ethylenedioxy)thiophene]/poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)) light‐emitting devices (LEDs) with ITO and Al electrodes were prepared and studied. They emitted a green light and their electroluminescence (EL) spectra were similar to those of PL thin films. The external EL efficiency was determined to be 0.43 and 0.32% for ITO/PEDOT:PSS/ 2 /Al and ITO/PEDOT:PSS/ 3 /Al LEDs, respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the synthesis and characterization of a novel thermally crosslinkable hole‐transporting poly (fluorene‐co‐triphenylamine) (PFO‐TPA) by Suzuki coupling reaction, followed with its application in the fabrication of multilayer light‐emitting diodes by wet processes. The thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of PFO‐TPA were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, optical spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Thermally crosslinked PFO‐TPA, through pendant styryl groups, demonstrates excellent thermal stability (Td > 400 °C, Tg = 152 °C), solvent resistance, and film homogeneity. Its highest occupied molecular orbital level (?5.30 eV) lies between those of PEDOT:PSS (?5.0 ~ ?5.2 eV) and poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (PFO: ?5.70 eV), forming a stepwise energy ladder to facilitate hole injection. Multilayer device with crosslinked PFO‐TPA as hole‐injection layer (HIL) (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/HIL/PFO/LiF/Ca/Al) was readily fabricated by successive spin‐coating processes, its maximum luminance efficiency (3.16 cd/A) were about six times higher than those without PFO‐TPA layer (0.50 cd/A). The result of hole‐only device also confirmed hole‐injection and hole‐transport abilities of crosslinked PFO‐TPA layer. Consequently, the device performance enhancement is attributed to more balanced charges injection in the presence of crosslinked PFO‐TPA layer. The thermally crosslinkable PFO‐TPA is a promising material for the fabrication of efficient multilayer polymer light‐emitting diodes because it is not only a hole‐transporting polymer but also thermally crosslinkable. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Green‐emitting substituted poly[(2‐hexyloxy‐5‐methyl‐1,3‐phenylenevinylene)‐alt‐(2,5‐dihexyloxy‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene)]s ( 6 ) were synthesized via the Wittig–Horner reaction. The polymers were yellow resins with molecular weights of 10,600. The ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption of 6 (λmax = 332 or 415 nm) was about 30 nm redshifted from that of poly[(2‐hexyloxy‐5‐methyl‐1,3‐phenylenevinylene)‐alt‐(1,4‐phenylenevinylene)] ( 2 ) but was only 5 nm redshifted with respect to that of poly[(1,3‐phenylenevinylene)‐alt‐(2,5‐dihexyloxy‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene)] ( 1 ). A comparison of the optical properties of 1 , 2 , and 6 showed that substitution on m‐ or p‐phenylene could slightly affect their energy gap and luminescence efficiency, thereby fine‐tuning the optical properties of the poly[(m‐phenylene vinylene)‐alt‐(p‐phenylene vinylene)] materials. The vibronic structures were assigned with the aid of low‐temperature UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Light‐emitting‐diode devices with 6 produced a green electroluminescence output (emission λmax ~ 533 nm) with an external quantum efficiency of 0.32%. Substitution at m‐phenylene appeared to be effective in perturbing the charge‐injection process in LED devices. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble conjugated copolymers derived from 9,9‐dioctylfluorene (FO) and selenophene (SeH) was synthesized by a palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction with various feed ratios of SeH to FO less than or equal to 50%. The efficient energy transfer from fluorene segments to narrow band‐gap selenophene sites was observed. In comparison with the very well studied copolymer poly(fluorene‐co‐thiophene), poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐selenophene) (PFO‐SeH) shows redshifted photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) emission. PL spectra of the PFO‐SeH copolymers show a significant redshift along with increasing selenophene content in the copolymers and also with increasing polymer concentration in solution. PL quantum efficiency of the selenophene‐containing PFO copolymer is much lower than that of corresponding PFO‐thiophene (Th) copolymers. All these features of PFO‐SeH copolymers can be explained by the difference in aromaticity of selenophene and thiophene heterocycles and the heavy atom effect of Se in comparison with S‐atoms. The device fabricated with PFO‐SeH15 as the emissive layer exhibited high external quantum efficiency (0.51%) at a luminance of 1570 cd/m2. Device performance is limited by electron injection and the strong quenching effect of Se atoms. Devices with PFO‐SeH copolymers blended into PFO homopolymers show significant improvement in device performance. External quantum efficiency as high as 1.7% can be obtained for PFO‐SeH30/PFO blend devices. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 823–836, 2005  相似文献

Copolyfluorenes ( PFR1 and PFR2 ), chemically doped with 0.1 and 0.025 mol % 2,5‐dihexyloxy‐1,4‐bis(2‐thienyl‐2‐cyanovinyl)benzene (MR chromophere) were synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. The PFR s were used to fabricate white‐light‐emitting devices through incomplete energy transfer. Because of the low content of the MR chromophore, the optical, thermal, and electrochemical properties of the PFR s were almost identical to those of polyfluorene, except for their photoluminescent (PL) and electroluminescent (EL) properties. The copolymer films showed PL peaks at about 428 and 570 nm originating from fluorene segments and MR chromophores, respectively. Compared with the model compound ( MR ), the polymer chains extended the conjugation length of the MR chromophores and exhibited a 20–48 nm red‐shift in the emission band. In addition, the lower LUMO level of the MR (?3.27 eV) was expected to improve the electron injection. The EL devices [ITO/PEDOT:PSS/ PFR s/Ca (50 nm)/Al (100 nm)] showed a broad emission band, covering the entire visible region, with chromaticity coordinates of (0.36, 0.35) and (0.32, 0.30) for PFR1 and PFR2 devices, respectively. The emission color of the PFR2 device was very similar to that of a pure white light (0.33, 0.33); and the maximal brightness and current efficiency were 3011 cd/m2 and 1.98 cd/A, respectively, which surpass those found for polyfluorene devices (1005 cd/m2, 0.28 cd/A). A set of novel greenish‐yellow‐, yellow‐, and orange‐light‐emitting polymeric iridium(III) complexes were synthesized with the bridge‐splitting method. The respective dimeric precursor complexes, [Ir(ppy)2‐μ‐Cl]2 (ppy = 2‐phenylpyridine) and [Ir(ppy? CHO)2‐μ‐Cl]2 [ppy? CHO = 4‐(2‐pyridyl)benzaldehyde], were coordinated to 2,2′‐bipyridine carrying poly(ε‐caprolactone) tails. The resulting emissive polymers were characterized with one‐dimensional (1H) and two‐dimensional (1H? 1H correlation spectroscopy) nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, and the successful coordination of the iridium(III) centers to the 2,2′‐bipyridine macroligand was revealed. The thermal behavior was studied with differential scanning calorimetry and correlated with atomic force microscopy. Furthermore, the quantitative coordination was verified by both the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the mononuclear iridium(III) compounds. The photoluminescence spectra showed strong emissions at 535 and 570 nm. The color shifts depended on the substituents of the cyclometallating ligands. Cyclic voltammetry gave oxidation potentials of 1.23 V and 1.46 V. Upon the excitation of the films at 365 nm, yellow light was observed, and this could allow potential applications in light‐emitting devices. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blue light‐emitting polyfluorenes, PPF‐FSOs and PPF‐SOFs were synthesized via introducing spiro[fluorene‐9,9′‐thioxanthene‐S,S‐dioxide] isomers (2,7‐diyl and 2′,7′‐diyl) (FSO/SOF) into the poly[9,9‐bis(4‐(2‐ethylhexyloxy) phenyl)fluorene‐2,7‐diyl] (PPF) backbone, respectively. With the increasing contents of FSO and SOF moieties, the absorption and PL spectra of PPF‐FSOs show slight red shift, while that of PPF‐SOFs exhibit blue shift, respectively. The HOMO and LUMO levels reduce gradually with increasing SOF unit in PPF‐SOFs. The polymers emit blue light peaked around 430–445 nm and show an excellent spectral stability with the variation in current densities. The distinctly narrowing EL spectra were observed with the incorporation of isomers in the polymers. The full width at half maximum reduced by 15 nm for PPF‐SOFs, resulting in a blue shift with the CIE coordinates from (0.16, 0.11) to (0.16, 0.08). With a device configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/EML/CsF/Al, a maximum luminance efficiency (LEmax) of 2.00 cd A?1, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 3.76% with the CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.08) for PPF‐SOF15 and a LEmax of 1.68 cd A?1, a EQEmax of 2.38% with CIE (0.16, 0.12) for PPF‐FSO10 were obtained, respectively. The result reveals that spiro[fluorene‐9,9′‐thioxanthene‐S,S‐dioxide] isomers are promising blocks for deep‐blue light‐emitting polymers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. New deep‐red light‐emitting phosphorescent dendrimers with hole‐transporting carbazole dendrons were synthesized by reacting tris(2‐benzo[b]thiophen‐2‐yl‐pyridyl) iridium (III) complex with carbazolyl dendrons by DCC‐catalyzed esterification. The resulting first‐, second‐, and third‐generation dendrimers were found to be highly efficient as solution‐processable emitting materials and for use in host‐free electrophosphorescent light‐emitting diodes. We fabricated a host‐free dendrimer EL device with configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS (40 nm)/dendrimer (55 nm)/BCP (10 nm)/Alq3 (40 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) and characterized the device performance. The multilayered devices showed luminance of 561 cd/m2 at 383.4 mA/cm2 (12 V) for 15 , 1302 cd/m2 at 321.3 mA/cm2 (14 V) for 16 , and 422 cd/m2 at 94.4 mA/cm2 (18 V) for 17 . The third‐generation dendrimer, 17 (ηext = 6.12% at 7.5 V), showed the highest external quantum efficiency (EQE) with an increase in the density of the light‐harvesting carbazole dendron. Three dendrimers exhibited considerably pure deep‐red emission with CIE 1931 (Commission International de L'Eclairage) chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.70, y = 0.30. The CIE coordinates remained very stable with the current density. The integration of rigid hole‐transporting dendrons and phosphorescent complexes provides a new route to design highly efficient solution‐processable materials for dendrimer light‐emitting diode (DLED) applications. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
