An heterofunctional initiator combining two reactive sites for ring opening polymerization and two for atom transfer radical polymerization was used to prepare three A2B2 miktoarm star copolymers of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and polystyrene (PS). The morphology and thermal properties were studied by transmission electron microscopy, polarized light optical microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The (PCL)2(PS)2 72/28 (72 wt % PCL) sample was crystallized from a disordered melt. In this case, crystallization drove the structure formation and a lamellar morphology was obtained at the microdomain level, while spherulites were observed at a superstructural level. The other two samples, 39/61 and 27/73, with lower PCL content and higher total molecular weight, were not able to form spherulites. Surprisingly, these miktoarm star copolymers exhibited hexagonally packed cylinders and spheres morphologies, respectively, instead of lamellar and cylindrical morphology. Such unexpected and novel behavior was explained in terms of the higher resistance of the arms to be stretched in a miktoarm star copolymer when compared with the corresponding linear diblocks. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined three‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) copolymers having different block lengths were synthesized via the combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, three‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) (Mn = 2490–7830 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.19–1.24) were synthesized via ROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) using tris(2‐hydroxyethyl)cynuric acid as three‐arm initiator and stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2) as a catalyst. Subsequently, the three‐arm macroinitiator transformed from such PCL in high conversion initiated ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBuA) to construct three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PtBuA copolymers (Mn = 10,900–19,570 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.14–1.23). Finally, the three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PAA copolymer was obtained via the hydrolysis of the PtBuA segment in three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PtBuA copolymers. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The aggregates of three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PAA copolymer were studied by the determination of critical micelles concentration and transmission electron microscope. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We described the obtention of A2B star block copolymers through the use of a new heterotrifunctional initiator. That way, well‐defined (PCL)2‐arm‐PtBuMA and (PCL)2‐arm‐PS star block copolymers have been synthesized from a heterotrifunctional initiator bearing two hydroxyl groups able to initiate ROP of CL (with AlEt3 or Sn(Oct)2 as coinitiator) and a bromide function able to initiate ATRP of tBuMA or styrene. Firstly, we have proceeded using a sequential process (two‐steps), leading to an intermediate macroinitiator. Secondly, attempt to polymerize these two monomers in a simultaneous process (one‐step), that is directly from the mixture of monomers, initiator, coinitiators, and solvent, has been realized and has shown that some interferences between the two polymerizations occurred, leading to an inhibition of ATRP when Sn(Oct)2 was used and an unexpected increase in control when AlEt3 was used as catalyst for the ROP (obtention of well‐defined (PCL)2‐arm‐PtBuMA with pdi of 1.18). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined amphiphilic PCL‐b‐(PDMA)2 and (PCL)2b‐PDMA Y‐shaped miktoarm star copolymers and PCL‐b‐PDMA linear diblock copolymer were synthesized via a combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), where PCL is poly (ε‐caprolactone) and PDMA is poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate). All of these three types of copolymers have comparable PCL contents and overall molecular weights. The PCL block is hydrophobic while the PDMA block is hydrophilic, and they behave like polymeric surfactants and self‐assemble into PCL‐core micelles in aqueous media. The chain architectural effects on the micellization properties, including the aggregation number, size, polydispersity, and micelle densities of (PCL29)2b‐PDMA45, PCL61b‐(PDMA24)2, and PCL56b‐PDMA49 in dilute aqueous solution, were then explored by dynamic and static laser light scattering (LLS). The intensity–average hydrodynamic radius, 〈Rh〉, the aggregation number per micelle, Nagg, and the core radius, Rcore, of the PCL‐core micelles all increased in the order PCL61b‐(PDMA24)2 < (PCL29)2b‐PDMA45 < PCL56b‐PDMA49. The surface area occupied per soluble PDMA block at the core/corona interface increased in the order PCL61b‐(PDMA24)2 < PCL56b‐PDMA49 < (PCL29)2b‐PDMA45. PCL61b‐(PDMA24)2 micelles had the largest overall micelle density, possibly because of that the presence of two soluble PDMA arms at the junction point favors the bending of the core–corona interface and thus the formation of densely‐packed core‐shell nanostructures. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new initiators, namely, 4‐(4‐(2‐(4‐(allyloxy) phenyl)‐5‐hydroxypentane 2‐yl) phenoxy)benzaldehyde and 4‐(4‐(allyloxy) phenyl)‐4‐(4‐(4‐formylphenoxy) phenyl) pentyl 2‐bromo‐2‐methyl propanoate containing “clickable” hetero‐functionalities namely aldehyde and allyloxy were synthesized starting from commercially available 4,4′‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl) pentanoic acid. These initiators were utilized, respectively, for ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone and atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate. Well‐defined α‐aldehyde, α′‐allyloxy heterobifunctionalized poly(ε‐caprolactones) (Mn,GPC: 5900–29,000, PDI: 1.26–1.43) and poly(methyl methacrylate)s (Mn,GPC: 5300–28800, PDI: 1.19–1.25) were synthesized. The kinetic study of methyl methacrylate polymerization demonstrated controlled polymerization behavior. The presence of aldehyde and allyloxy functionality on polymers was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Aldehyde‐aminooxy and thiol‐ene metal‐free double click strategy was used to demonstrate reactivity of functional groups on polymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The growth and degradation of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) brushes were compared. Using tin (octanoate) as the catalyst, optimal conditions were found for growth of each polyester brush from the hydroxy‐terminated silicon surface via ring‐opening polymerization. PCL brushes grew thicker at elevated temperatures but the thickest PGA brushes grew at room temperature. Unlike bulk polyesters that can degrade under both acidic and basic conditions, the confined surface polyester brushes only degraded under neutral or basic conditions. The degradation mechanism of grafted polyester brushes was probed through a blocking test. It was shown that the terminal hydroxy groups of these polyester brushes were essential to the degradation process indicating a preferential backbiting mechanism. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. The ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone (?‐CL) catalyzed by iodine (I2) was studied. The formation of a charge‐transfer complex (CTC) among triiodide, I, and ?‐CL was confirmed with ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. The monomer ?‐CL was polymerized in bulk using I2 as a catalyst to form the polyester having apparent weight‐average molecular weights of 35,900 and 45,500 at polymerization temperatures of 25 and 70 °C, respectively. The reactivity of both, ?‐CL monomer and ?‐CL:I2 CTC, was interpreted by means of the potential energy surfaces determined by semiempirical computations (MNDO‐d). The results suggest that the formation of the ?‐CL:I2 CTC leads to the ring opening of the ?‐CL structure with the lactone protonation and the formation of a highly polarized polymerization precursor (?‐CL)+. The band gaps approximated from an extrapolation of the oligomeric polycaprolactone (PCL) structures were computed. With semiempirical quantum chemical calculations, geometries and charge distributions of the protonated polymerization precursor (?‐CL)+ were obtained. The calculated band gap (highest occupied molecular orbit/lowest unoccupied molecular orbit differences) agrees with the experiment. The analysis of the oligomeric PCL isosurfaces indicate the existence of a weakly lone pair character of the C?O and C? O bonds suggesting a ?‐CL ring‐opening specificity. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 714–722, 2002  相似文献

Chitosan‐graft‐poly(ϵ‐caprolactone) was prepared via the ring‐opening graft polymerization of ϵ‐caprolactone (CL) through chitosan with 4‐dimethylaminopyridine as a catalyst and water as a swelling agent. The graft content of PCL within the graft copolymer was adjusted by the feed ratio of CL to chitosan, and the highest grafting concentration of PCL was up to about 400%. Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, and two‐dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence analyses indicated that the amino group (NH2 CH‐2) of chitosan initiated the graft polymerization of CL through the backbone of chitosan, and the hydroxyl group (HO CH2–6) of chitosan did not participate in initiating the graft polymerization. The percentage of amino groups initiating the graft polymerization decreased with an increasing molar ratio of CL to chitosan in the feed, and this was attributed to the fact that the graft polymerization system increasingly became heterogeneous with an increasing feed ratio of CL to chitosan. The physical properties of the graft copolymers were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, respectively. These suggested that the introduction of PCL grafts through the chitosan backbone would to some extent destroy the crystalline structure of chitosan, and the PCL grafts existed in an amorphous structure. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Superparamagnetic and biodegradable/biocompatible core–corona nanocomposite particles were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone initiated from the surface of maghemite. As was done in a previous work, an aminosilane coupling agent was chosen as the coinitiator and immobilized at the surface of the maghemite particles to allow the growth of the poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) chains from the solid surface. Two different catalytic systems based on aluminum and tin alkoxides were investigated. Whatever the catalyst used, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform spectroscopy brought evidence for polymer anchoring through a covalent bond, whereas thermogravimetric analysis attested to the presence of high amounts of PCL around the maghemite. Magnetization measurements proved that the nanocomposites kept their superparamagnetic properties after coating. The polymer contents obtained by this grafting‐from route were compared with the results obtained by a more classical grafting‐to process. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers composed of 14 poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) arms and 7 poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) arms with β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) as core moiety were synthesized by the combination of controlled ring‐opening polymerization (CROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 14‐Arm star PCL homopolymers (CDSi‐SPCL) were first synthesized by the CROP of CL using per‐6‐(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl)‐β‐CD as the multifunctional initiator in the presence of Sn(Oct)2 at 125 °C. Subsequently, the hydroxyl end groups of CDSi‐SPCL were blocked by acetyl chloride. After desilylation of the tert‐butyldimethylsilyl ether groups from the β‐CD core, 7 ATRP initiating sites were introduced by treating with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, which further initiated ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) to prepare well‐defined A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers [CDS(PCL‐PtBA)]. Their molecular structures and physical properties were in detail characterized by 1H NMR, SEC‐MALLS, and DSC. The selective hydrolysis of tert‐butyl ester groups of the PtBA block gave the amphiphilic A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers [CDS(PCL‐PAA)]. These amphiphilic copolymers could self‐assemble into multimorphological aggregates in aqueous solution, which were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An ABC‐type miktoarm star polymer was prepared with a core‐out method via a combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), stable free‐radical polymerization (SFRP), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, ROP of ϵ‐caprolactone was carried out with a miktofunctional initiator, 2‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methyl‐propionyloxymethyl)‐3‐hydroxy‐2‐methyl‐propionic acid 2‐phenyl‐2‐(2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐piperidin‐1‐yl oxy)‐ethyl ester, at 110 °C. Second, previously obtained poly(ϵ‐caprolactone) (PCL) was used as a macroinitiator for SFRP of styrene at 125 °C. As a third step, this PCL–polystyrene (PSt) precursor with a bromine functionality in the core was used as a macroinitiator for ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate in the presence of Cu(I)Br and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine at 100 °C. This produced an ABC‐type miktoarm star polymer [PCL–PSt–poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)] with a controlled molecular weight and a moderate polydispersity (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.37). The obtained polymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 4228–4236, 2004  相似文献

A novel miktofunctional initiator ( 1 ), 2‐hydroxyethyl 3‐[(2‐bromopropanoyl)oxy]‐2‐{[(2‐bromopropanoyl)oxy]methyl}‐2‐methyl‐propanoate, possessing one initiating site for ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and two initiating sites for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), was synthesized in a three‐step reaction sequence. This initiator was first used in the ROP of ?‐caprolactone, and this led to a corresponding polymer with secondary bromide end groups. The obtained poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) was then used as a macroinitiator for the ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate, and this resulted in AB2‐type PCL–[poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)]2 or PCL–[poly(methyl methacrylate)]2 miktoarm star polymers with controlled molecular weights and low polydispersities (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.23) via the ROP–ATRP sequence. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone was carried out smoothly and effectively with constant microwave powers of 170, 340, 510, and 680 W, respectively, with a microwave oven at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The temperature of the polymerization ranged from 80 to 210 °C. Poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) with a weight‐average molar mass (Mw) of 124,000 g/mol and yield of 90% was obtained at 680 W for 30 min using 0.1% (mol/mol) stannous octanoate as a catalyst. When the polymerization was catalyzed by 1% (w/w) zinc powder, the Mw of PCL was 92,300 g/mol after the reaction mixture was irradiated at 680 W for 270 min. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this contribution, we report on the self‐assembly in water of original amphiphilic poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐b‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) copolymers, synthesized by copper‐catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. For such purpose, (poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)) and (poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)) are first prepared by cationic ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization, respectively. Well‐defined polymeric building blocks, ω‐N3‐P(t‐BA) and α‐alkyne‐P(MOx), bearing reactive chain end groups, are accurately characterized by matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight spectroscopy. Then, P(MOx)nb‐P(t‐BA)m are achieved by polymer–polymer coupling and are fully characterized by diffusion‐ordered NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography, demonstrating the obtaining of pure amphiphilic copolymers. Consequently, the latter lead to the formation in water of well‐defined monodisperse spherical micelles (RH = 40–60 nm), which are studied by fluorescence spectroscopy, static light scattering, atomic force microscope, and transmission electronic microscopy. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 12‐Hydroxydodecanoate (HD) anions were intercalated, via an ion‐exchange procedure, onto a Mg/Al hydrotalcite‐like compound with the formula [Mg0.65Al0.35(OH)2](NO3)0.35·0.56H2O. The obtained intercalate, characterized by chemical and thermal analyses, X‐ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, had the formula [Mg0.65Al0.35(OH)2](NO3)0.08(HD)0.28·0.56H2O and an interlayer distance of 2.27 nm. Structural considerations indicated that the charge‐balancing HO? (CH2)11? COO? anions were accommodated in the interlayer region as a monofilm of partially interdigitated alkyl chains in a trans planar conformation and bearing the alcoholic group. The organically modified hydrotalcite was used to prepare novel composites based on poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) with different procedures: (1) solvent casting, (2) ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone, and (3) blending of precursors consisting of a PCL intercalated oligomer with a high‐molecular‐weight PCL. Microcomposites were obtained by the solvent casting of a mixture of a high‐molecular‐weight PCL and the modified hydrotalcite. The ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone initiated by the ? OH groups of the alkyl chains intercalated in the hydrotalcite led to hybrid materials in which a low‐molecular‐weight PCL was in part intercalated into the modified hydrotalcite. Nanocomposites containing exfoliated hydrotalcite were obtained through the mixing, in different weight ratios, of hybrids consisting of PCL oligomers and modified hydrotalcite with a commercial high‐molecular‐weight PCL. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable star‐shaped poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(lactide) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of lactide, using star poly(ethylene glycol) as an initiator and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature. Two series of three‐ and four‐armed PEG‐PLA copolymers were synthesized and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as well as 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The polymerization under the used conditions is very fast, yielding copolymers of controlled molecular weight and tailored molecular architecture. The chemical structure of the copolymers investigated by 1H and 13C NMR indicates the formation of block copolymers. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by GPC provided further evidence of controlled and defined star‐shaped copolymers as well as the absence of cyclic oligomeric species. The effects of copolymer composition and lactide stereochemistry on the physical properties were investigated by GPC and differential scanning calorimetry. For the same PLA chain length, the materials obtained in the case of linear copolymers are more viscous, whereas in the case of star copolymer, solid materials are obtained with reduction in their Tg and Tm temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel biodegradable amphiphilic copolymer with hydrophobic poly(ε‐caprolactone) branches containing cholic acid moiety and a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) chain was synthesized. The copolymer was characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing light microscopy (PLM), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis. The amphiphilic copolymer could self‐assemble into micelles in an aqueous solution. The critical micelle concentration of the amphiphilic copolymer was determined by fluorescence spectroscopy. A nanoparticle drug delivery system with a regularly spherical shape was prepared with high encapsulation efficiency. The in vitro drug release from the drug‐loaded polymeric nanoparticles was investigated. Because of the branched structure of the hydrophobic part of the copolymer and the relatively fast degradation rate of the copolymer, an improved release behavior was observed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
