Polystyrene‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PS‐g‐MWNTs) with a hairy‐rod nanostructure were synthesized by the in situ free‐radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) terminated with vinyl groups. To quantitatively study the molecular weight and composition of polystyrene (PS) chains in PS‐g‐MWNTs, PS‐g‐MWNTs were fully defunctionalized by hydrolysis. The results showed that 1 of every 100 carbon atoms in MWNTs was functionalized at the tips and outer walls of the carbon nanotubes and grafted by PS with a weight‐average molecular weight of 9800 g/mol; therefore, a uniform thin layer (ca. 8–10 nm) of a PS shell was formed on the outer wall of MWNTs. PS‐g‐MWNTs were soluble in dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran. The thermal stability and glass‐transition temperature of PS in PS‐g‐MWNTs were obviously increased. Nanopins were formed on the glass substrates by the self‐assembly of PS‐g‐MWNTs, and the dewetting effect between the glass substrate and PS chains covered MWNTs during the evaporation of the solution. Both the length and diameter of the nanopins increased with the solution concentration. When PS‐g‐MWNTs were compression‐molded, MWNTs were dispersed uniformly in the PS matrix and formed good networks, such as circlelike and starlike structures, because of the entanglements of hairy PS chains on MWNTs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, we describe a new strategy for producing narrowly dispersed functional colloidal particles stabilized by a nanocomposite with hydrophilic clay faces and hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) brushes on the edges. This method involves preparation of polymer brushes on the edges of clay layers and Pickering suspension polymerization of styrene in the presence of the nanocomposites. PS brushes on the edges of clay layers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization. X‐ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that PS chains were grafted to the edges of clay platelets. Transmission electron microscope results showed that different morphologies of clay‐PS particles could be obtained in different solvents. In water, clay‐PS particles aggregated together, in which PS chains collapsed forming nanosized hydrophobic domains and hydrophilic clay faces stayed in aqueous phase. In toluene, clay‐PS particles formed face‐to‐face structure. Narrowly dispersed PS colloidal particles stabilized by clay‐PS were prepared by suspension polymerization. Because of the negatively charged clay particles on the surface, the zeta potential of the PS colloidal particles was negative. Positively charged poly(2‐vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) chains were adsorbed to the surface of PS colloidal particles in aqueous solution at a low pH value, and gold nanoparticles were prepared in P2VP brushes. Such colloidal particles may find important applications in a variety of fields including waterborne adhesives, paints, catalysis of chemical reactions, and protein separation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel approach to fabricate polymer brushes on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is proposed. Carboxyl groups on the surface of chemically oxidized CNTs were reacted with hexamethylene diisocyanate, followed by a reaction with methacrylamide to give terminal vinyl groups‐functionalized CNTs, so called “CNT‐mer.” The synthetic procedure was investigated step‐by‐step and the synthesized CNT‐mer was used to grow polystyrene (PS) from CNTs by a simple in situ polymerization in the presence of a thermal initiator. By employing 1H NMR, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and light scattering, the experimental results were verified. Using this approach, 45% PS with respect to CNTs are grafted on the surface of CNTs with about 4.0 nm thickness. This novel technique would provide a facile route to prepare tailor‐made polymer brushes on the surface of CNTs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were functionalized with a silane coupling agent. The MWNTs were first coated with inorganic silica by a sol‐gel process and then grafted with 3‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (3‐MPTS). The effect of raw MWNTs and silane‐functionalized MWNTs on the crystallization behavior of poly(propylene) (PP) was investigated by means of polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Results obtained from isothermal crystallization experiments indicate that 3‐MPTS functionalization affects the crystallization and melting behavior of PP/MWNTs composites remarkably, which can be attributed to the fact that 3‐MPTS functionalization of MWNTs leads to a uniform dispersion of MWNTs in PP matrix resulting in the good nucleating effect of MWNTs. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An ammonium free radical initiator was ion exchanged onto the surface of clay layers. Polystyrene (PS) and poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) mixed polymer brushes on the surface of clay layers were prepared by in situ free radical polymerization. PS colloid particles armored by clay layers with mixed polymer brushes were prepared by Pickering suspension polymerization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the colloid particles. Clay layers on the surface of PS colloid particles can be observed. Because of the cationic nature of the PDMAEMA brushes the colloid particles have positive zeta potentials at low pH values. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to analyze the surface of the colloid particles. N1s binding energy of PDMAEMA chains on the surface of clay layers was detected by XPS. The two peaks of the N1s binding energy indicate two different nitrogen environments on the surface of clay layers. The peak with a lower binding energy is characteristic of neutral nitrogen on PDMAEMA chains, and the peak with a higher binding energy is attributed to protonated nitrogen on PDMAEMA chains. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) mixed polymer brushes on the surface of clay layers were prepared by using in situ free radical polymerization. Free radical initiator molecules with two quaternary ammonium groups at both ends were intercalated into the interlayer spacing of clay layers. The amount of polymer brushes grafted on the surface of clay layers can be controlled by controlling the polymerization time. Thermogravimetric analysis, X‐ray diffraction, and high‐resolution transmission electron microscope results indicated successful preparation of the mixed polymer brushes on the surface of clay layers. The kinetics of the grafting of the monomers was also studied. The mixed polymer brushes on the surface of clay layers were used as compatibilizers in blends of PS and PMMA. In the blends, the intercalated clay particles tend to locate at the interface of two phases reducing the interfacial tension. In the meanwhile, PMMA homopolymer chains tend to intercalate into clay layers. The driving force for the intercalation is the compatibility between homo‐PMMA chains and PMMA brushes on the surface of clay layers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new kind of dendronized polymer brush with metallo‐supramolecular polymer side chains was fabricated by a combination of macromonomer and graft‐to approach. The alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and styryl macromonomers pendant with Fréchet‐type dendrons of three generations were reported previously. In this article, terpyridine groups were introduced along the backbone of the dendronized polymers through the amidolysis of anhydride groups. The terpyridine functionalized PEO linear chains were then incorporated through the complexation of terpyridine and Ru(II) ion. Thus, dendronized polymer brushes with amphiphilic properties were synthesized. AFM analysis showed worm‐like single molecular morphologies of the polymers of three generations, and 1H NMR analysis indicated that such molecular brushes had an amphiphilic nature in solution. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (P‐MWNTs) were functionalized with 4‐chlorobenzoic acid via “direct” Friedel‐Crafts acylation in polyphosphoric acid (PPA)/phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) medium. The resultant 4‐chlorobenzoyl‐functionalized MWNTs (F‐MWNTs) were soluble in chlorinated solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride. A large scale of nylon 610/F‐MWNT composite could be conveniently prepared by in situ interfacial polymerization of 1, 6‐hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) in an aqueous phase, and sebacoyl chloride with F‐MWNTs in an organic phase. Similarly, nylon 610/P‐MWNT composite was also prepared for comparison. The state of F‐MWNTs dispersion in nylon 610 matrix was distinctively better than that of P‐MWNTs, which could be clearly discerned by both naked eye and scanning electron microcopy (SEM). As a result, the tensile strength of nylon 610/F‐MWNT composite was 4.9‐fold higher than that of nylon 610/P‐MWNT composite. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heterotelechelic polystyrene (PS), poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA), and poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA), containing both azide and triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) protected acetylene end groups, were prepared in good control (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.24) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The end groups were independently applied in two successive “click” reactions, that is: first the azide termini were functionalized and, after deprotection, the acetylene moieties were utilized for a second conjugation step. As a proof of concept, PS was consecutively functionalized with propargyl alcohol and azidoacetic acid, as confirmed by MALDI‐ToF MS. In addition, the same methodology was employed to modularly build up an ABC type triblock terpolymer. Size exclusion chromatography measurements demonstrated first coupling of PtBA to PS and, after the deprotection of the acetylene functionality on PS, connection of PMA, yielding a PMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PtBA triblock terpolymer. The reactions were driven to completion using a slight excess of azide functionalized polymers. Reduction of the residual azide groups into amines allowed easy removal of this excess of polymer by column chromatography. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyoxymethylene (POM)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites were prepared through a simple solution‐evaporation method assisted by ultrasonic irradiation. To enhance the dispersion of MWNTs in POM, MWNTs were chemically functionalized with PEG‐substituted amine (MWNT‐g‐PEG), which exhibited strong affinity with POM due to their similar molecular structure. The thermal conductivity and the mechanical properties of the composites were investigated, which showed that the thermal conductive properties of POM were improved remarkably in the presence of MWNTs, whereas reduced by using MWNT‐g‐PEG due to the heat transport barrier of the grafted‐PEG‐substituted amine chain. A nonlinear increase of the thermal conductivity was observed with increasing MWNTs content, and the Maxwell‐Eucken model and the Agari model were used for theoretical evaluation. The relatively high effective length factor of the composite predicted with mixture equation indicated that there were few entangles of MWNTs for the samples of MWNT‐g‐PEG in the composites. The mechanical strength of the composites can be improved remarkably by using suitable content of such functionalized MWNTs, and with the increase of the aliphatic chain length of PEG‐substituted amine, the toughness of the composites can be enhanced. Transmission electron microscope result indicated that MWNT‐g‐PEG exhibited strong affinity with POM and a good dispersion of MWNTs was achieved in POM matrix. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new method was developed for preparing polystyrene‐functionalized multiple‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) through the termination of anionically synthesized living polystyryllithium with the acyl chloride functionalities on the MWNTs. The acyl chloride functionalities on the MWNTs were in turn obtained by the formation of carboxyls via chemical oxidation and their conversion into acyl chlorides. The polystyrene‐functionalized MWNTs had good dispersion in common organic solvents, and this indicated good compatibility for the preparation of styrenic nanocomposite materials. The synthesis results and characterization data for the functionalized MWNTs, collected via Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, solid‐state NMR, and electron microscopy, are presented and discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nanocomposites were prepared by melt‐extruding mixtures of PET and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with some interaction with PET molecules. For the functionalization of MWNTs, benzyl isocyanate and phenyl isocyanate with different molecular flexibility were employed on the surface of the MWNTs via chemical modification, respectively. The reaction for functionalization of MWNTs was confirmed by FTIR and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. TEM observations indicated that both benzyl and phenyl isocyanate groups covered the surface of the MWNTs after functionalization. The PET nanocomposites containing isocyanate groups showed improved mechanical properties, including the tensile strength and tensile modulus, compared with those with pristine and acid‐treated nanotubes. These improvements were ascribed to π–π interactions between the aromatic rings of PET molecules and the isocyanate group in MWNTs. The functionalized MWNTs showed a better dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the matrix polymer and a different fractured cross‐section morphology in scanning electron microscope measurements relative to the pristine MWNTs. The crystallinity of the functionalized MWNT‐PET nanocomposites was significantly higher than that of the pristine and acid‐treated MWNTs. FTIR results indicated that the presence of carbon nanotubes induced trans‐conformation of PET chains, and trans conformation was particularly dominant in PET composites incorporating MWNT‐phenyl. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were functionalized by a free‐radical reaction of vinyltriethoxysilane and were blended with poly(urea urethane) (PUU) containing poly(dimethylsiloxane) as a soft segment. PUU was end‐capped with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (A‐silane) or phenyltriethoxysilane (P‐silane).A‐silane‐end‐capped PUU was covalently bonded to functionalized MWNTs, whereas P‐silane‐end‐capped PUU was noncovalently bonded to pristine MWNTs by a π–π interaction. Fourier transform infrared, Raman spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the functionalization of MWNTs. The results showed that the optimal reaction time of the functionalization of MWNT was 8 h, and the organic content of the modified carbon nanotubes reached 35.22%. Solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance and dynamic mechanical analysis were used to investigate the molecular structure and molecular mobility of the carbon‐nanotube/PUU nanocomposites. A‐silane PUU covalently bonded to MWNTs showed a considerable reduction in the molecular motion of the soft segment, which led to the glass‐transition temperature decreasing from ?117 to ?127 °C as MWNTs were incorporated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The functionalization of nanoparticle surfaces is required to improve the dispersion of an inorganic material inside an organic matrix. In this work, polystyrene (PS) brushes were grown on the surface of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles with atom transfer radical polymerization and a grafting‐from approach. After polymerization, the magnetic nanoparticles had a graft density of 0.9 PS chains/nm2. A sacrificial initiator was used to obtain a satisfactory result for the control of the polymerization, as its addition had to generate a sufficient concentration of persistent radicals (deactivator). A variety of techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography, water contact‐angle measurements, and atomic force microscopy, were used to characterize the nanoparticles. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2′,4′‐p‐Vinylbenzylideneriboflavin ( 2′,4′‐PVBRFl ) was prepared as a flavin‐containing monomer and copolymerized with divinylbenzene and styrene or its p‐substituted derivatives such as 4‐acetoxystyrene, 4‐vinylbenzyl alcohol, and 4‐vinylbenzoic acid to give the corresponding non‐functionalized and functionalized PS‐DVB‐supported flavins PS(H)‐DVB‐Fl , PS(OAc)‐DVB‐Fl , PS(CH2OH)‐DVB‐Fl , and PS(COOH)‐DVB‐Fl , respectively. PS(OH)‐DVB‐Fl was also prepared by hydrolysis of PS(OAc)‐DVB‐Fl under basic conditions. These novel flavin‐containing insoluble polymers exhibited characteristic fluorescence in solid state, except PS(OH)‐DVB‐Fl , and different catalytic activities in aerobic reduction of olefins by in situ generated diimide from hydrazine depending on their pendant functional group. For example, PS(H)‐DVB‐Fl was found to be particularly effective for neutral hydrophobic substrates, which could be readily recovered by a simple filtration and reused more than 10 times without loss in catalytic activity. On the other hand, PS(OH)‐DVB‐Fl and PS(COOH)‐DVB‐Fl proved to be highly active for phenolic substrates known to be less reactive in the reaction with conventional non‐supported flavin catalysts. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were surface‐modified and grafted with poly(L ‐lactide) to obtain poly(L ‐lactide)‐grafted MWNTs (i.e. MWNTs‐g‐PLLA). Films of the PLLA/MWNTs‐g‐PLLA nanocomposites were then prepared by a solution casting method to investigate the effects of the MWNTs‐g‐PLLA on nonisothermal and isothermal melt‐crystallizations of the PLLA matrix using DSC and TMDSC. DSC data found that MWNTs significantly enhanced the nonisothermal melt‐crystallization from the melt and the cold‐crystallization rates of PLLA on the subsequent heating. Temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) analysis on the quenched PLLA nanocomposites found that, in addition to an exothermic cold‐crystallization peak in the range of 80–120 °C, an exothermic peak in the range of 150–165 °C, attributed to recrystallization, appeared before the main melting peak in the total and nonreversing heat flow curves. The presence of the recrystallization peak signified the ongoing process of crystal perfection and, if any, the formation of secondary crystals during the heating scan. Double melting endotherms appeared for the isothermally melt‐crystallized PLLA samples at 110 °C. TMDSC analysis found that the double lamellar thickness model, other than the melting‐recrystallization model, was responsible for the double melting peaks in PLLA nanocomposites. Polarized optical microscopy images found that the nucleation rate of PLLA was enhanced by MWNTs. TMDSC analysis found that the incorporation of MWNTs caused PLLA to decrease the heat‐capacity increase (namely, ΔCp) and the Cp at glass transition temperature. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation of 3‐miktoarm star terpolymers using nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (NMP), ring opening polymerization (ROP), and click reaction [3 + 2] are carried out by applying two types of one‐pot technique. In the first one‐pot technique, NMP of styrene (St), ROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL), and [3 + 2] click reaction (between azide end‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG‐N3)/or azide end‐functionalized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA‐N3) and alkyne) are carried out in the presence of 2‐(hydroxymethyl)‐2‐methyl‐3‐oxo‐3‐(2‐phenyl‐2‐(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yloxy)ethoxy) propyl pent‐4‐ynoate, 2 , as an initiator for 48 h at 125 °C (one‐pot/one‐step). As a second technique, NMP of St and ROP of ε‐CL were conducted using 2 as an initiator for 20 h at 125 °C, and subsequently PEG‐N3 or azide end‐functionalized poly(tert‐butyl acrylate (PtBA‐N3) was added to the polymerization mixture, followed by a click reaction [3 + 2] for 24 h at room temperature (one‐pot/two‐step). The 3‐miktoarm star terpolymers, PEG‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)(PCL)‐PS, PtBA‐PCL‐PS and PMMA‐PCL‐PS, were recovered by a simple precipitation in methanol without further purification. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Side‐chain pyrene functional poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was synthesized by using “click chemistry” strategy. First, partial tosylation of PVA with p‐toluene sulfonyl chloride were performed. The resulting PVA‐Ts polymer was then quantitatively converted into poly(vinyl alcohol)‐azide (PVA‐N3) in the presence of NaN3/DMF at 60 °C. Propargyl pyrene was prepared independently as a photoactive click component. Finally, azido functionalized PVA was coupled to propargyl pyrene with high efficiency by click chemistry. Incorporation of pyrene functionality in the resulting polymer was confirmed by spectral analysis. It is also shown that pyrene functionalized PVA (PVA‐Py) exhibited characteristic fluorescence properties and improved solubility in highly polar solvents such as water, DMSO, and DMF as well as less polar solvent such as THF compared with pristine PVA. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Alkoxyamine derivatives based on 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (TEMPO), Ntert‐butyl‐N‐(1‐diethylphosphono‐(2,2‐dimethylpropyl)) nitroxide (SG1) and Ntert‐butyl‐N‐(2‐methyl‐1‐phenylpropyl) nitroxide (TIPNO) containing a C11 hydrophobic spacer and a reactive triethoxysilyl polar head, were synthesized and anchored to silicon wafers by the Langmuir–Blodgett reactive deposition technique at surface pressures ranging from 15 to 32 mN/m. Polystyrene brushes (Mn ~ 8500–66,400 g/mol) were grown from the alkoxyamine functionalized silicon wafers by nitroxide mediated radical polymerization and characterized by ellipsometry and water contact angle measurements. The main parameters influencing the grafting density and the degree of stretching of the brushes are the nitroxide polarity and, therefore, the behavior of the corresponding alkoxyamines at the air/water interface of the Langmuir–Blodgett trough. Depending on the alkoxyamine chemical structure and the surface pressure during Langmuir–Blodgett deposition, polystyrene brushes with grafting densities of 0.3–1.0 chains/nm2 and stretching values of 40–70% were obtained. Regarding alkoxyamines deposited at high surface pressures, size exclusion chromatography experiments performed on both cleaved polystyrene brushes and chains simultaneously grown in the bulk revealed that the polymerization degree of the bulk and surface chains are significantly different, suggesting that steric constrains affect the polymerization kinetics occurring at the silicon surface. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A key problem with nanomaterials is the difficulty of controlling the dispersion of nanoparticles inside an organic medium. To overcome this problem, functionalization of the nanoparticle surface is required. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes were grown on the surface of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles with atom transfer radical polymerization and a grafting‐from approach. Modified magnetic nanoparticles with a graft density of 0.1 PMMA chains/nm2 were obtained. Cu(II), used as a deactivating complex, allowed good control of the polymerization along with a narrow polydispersity of the polymer chains. The functionalized magnetic nanoparticles were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography, and atomic force microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
