The end‐to‐end cyclization of telechelic polyisobutylenes (PIB's) toward cyclic polyisobutylenes is reported, using either ring‐closing metathesis (RCM) or the azide/alkyne‐“click”‐reaction. The first approach uses bisallyl‐telchelic PIB's (Mn = 1650, 3680, 9770 g mol?1) and Grubbs 1st‐, 2nd‐, and 3rd‐generation catalyst leading to cyclic PIB's in 60–80% yield, with narrow polydispersities (Mw/Mn = 1.25). Azide/alkyne‐“click”‐reactions of bisalkyne‐telechelic PIB's (Mn = 3840 and 9820 g mol?1) with excess of 1,11‐diazido‐undecane leads to the formation of mixtures of linear/cyclic PIB's under formation of oligomeric cycles. Subsequent reaction of the residual azide‐moieties in the linear PIB's with excess of alkyne‐telechelic PEO enables the chromatographic removal of the resulting linear PEO‐PIB‐block copolymers by column chromatography. Thus pure cyclic PIB's can be obtained using this double‐“click”‐method, devoid of linear contaminants. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 671–680, 2010  相似文献

The design and synthesis of novel linear–dendritic diblock amphiphiles with linear poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the hydrophilic block and dendritic poly(benzyl ether) as the hydrophobic block are described. The synthetic process consisted of two steps: a poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA)–poly(benzyl ether) dendrimer series were synthesized with atom transfer radical polymerization, and through the hydrolysis of linear PMA block into PAA, amphiphilic block copolymers, the PAA–poly(benzyl ether) dendrimer series, were obtained. The copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, and size exclusion chromatography and exhibited well‐defined architectures and low polydispersities. When the generation number of the dendritic block (Gi) less or equal to 3 and the degree of polymerization of the linear chain (n) was greater than 10, the amphiphiles were water‐soluble. The solution intrinsic viscosity increased with both the length of linear chain and the generation number of the dendritic block. The results obtained demonstrate that dendritic blocks play an unusual role in aqueous solutions of amphiphiles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4282–4288, 2000  相似文献

A combination of nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization and living anionic polymerization was used to synthesize a series of well‐defined graft (co)polymers with “V‐shaped” and “Y‐shaped” branches. The polymer main chain is a copolymer of styrene and p‐chloromethylstyrene (PS‐co‐PCMS) prepared via nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization. The V‐shaped branches were prepared through coupling reaction of polystyrene macromonomer, carrying 1,1‐diphenylethylene terminus, with polystyryllithium or polyisoprenyllithium. The Y‐shaped branches were prepared throughfurther polymerization initiated by the V‐shaped anions. The obtained branches, carrying a living anion at the middle (V‐shaped) or at the end of the third segment (Y‐shaped), were coupled in situ with pendent benzyl chloride of PS‐co‐PCMS to form the target graft (co)polymers. The purified graft (co)polymers were analyzed by size exclusion chromatography equipped with a multiangle light scattering detector and a viscometer. The result shows that the viscosities and radii of gyration of the branched polymers are remarkably smaller than those of linear polystyrene. In addition, V‐shaped product adopts a more compact conformation in dilute solution than the Y‐shaped analogy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Model copolymers of poly(butadiene) (PB) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), PB‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PB, were synthesized by sequential anionic polymerization (high vacuum techniques) of 1,3‐butadiene and hexamethylciclotrisiloxane (D3) on sec‐BuLi followed by chlorosilane‐coupling chemistry. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). SEC and 1H NMR results showed low polydispersity indexes (Mw/Mn) and variable siloxane compositions, whereas DSC and TGA experiments indicated that the thermal stability of the triblock copolymers depends on the PDMS composition. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation and chemical modification of dendritic–linear block copolymers with surface functionalized dendritic components are presented. Isophthalate ester-functionalized dendrons featuring benzylic halide groups at their focal points have been used for the metal catalyzed “living” radical polymerization of styrene. The molecular weight of the dendritic–linear block copolymers determined by MALDI-TOF and Size Exclusion Chromatography was found to be accurately controlled up to molecular weights of ca. 30,000 a.m.u., with polydispersities less than 1.2. Subsequent functional group modifications of the peripheral ethyl ester groups of the dendritic block have been successfully carried out leading to carboxylic acids, butyl amides, benzyl alcohols, benzyl halides, and also accelerated generation growth via transesterification with a first generation dendritic alcohol. Several of these new dendritic–linear block copolymers exhibit interesting aggregation characteristics as evidenced by 1H-NMR spectroscopic studies. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article describes the synthesis and characterization of [polystyrene‐b‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine)]n star‐block copolymers with the poly(2‐vinylpyridine) blocks at the periphery. A two‐step living anionic polymerization method was used. Firstly, oligo(styryl)lithium grafted poly(divinylbenzene) cores were used as multifunctional initiators to initiate living anionic polymerization of styrene in benzene at room temperature. Secondly, vinylpyridine was polymerized at the periphery of these living (polystyrene)n stars in tetrahydrofuran at ?78 °C. The resulting copolymers were characterized using size exclusion chromatography, multiangle laser light scattering, 1H NMR, elemental analysis, and intrinsic viscosity measurements. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate‐ran‐9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole) (poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK)) random copolymers, with VBK molar feed compositions fVBK,0 = 0.02–0.09, were synthesized using 10 mol % [tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino] nitroxide (SG1) relative to 2‐([tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino]oxy)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (BlocBuilder) at 80 °C and 90 °C. Controlled polymerizations were observed, even with fVBK,0 = 0.02, as reflected by a linear increase in number average molecular weight (Mn) versus conversion X ≤ 0.6 with final copolymers characterized by relatively narrow, monomodal molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.5). Poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK) copolymers were deemed sufficiently pseudo‐“living” to reinitiate a second batch of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), with very few apparent dead chains, as indicated by the monomodal shift in the gel permeation chromatography chromatograms. Poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK) random copolymers exhibited tuneable lower critical solution temperature (LCST), in aqueous solution, by modifying copolymer composition, solution pH and by the addition of the water‐soluble poly(DMAA) segment. 1H NMR analysis determined that, in water, the VBK units of the poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK) random copolymer were segregated to the interior of the copolymer aggregate regardless of solution temperature and that poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK)‐b‐poly(DMAA) block copolymers formed micelles above the LCST. In addition, the final random copolymer and block copolymer exhibited temperature dependent fluorescence due to the VBK units. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A dendritic macroinitiator having 16 TEMPO‐based alkoxyamines, Star‐16 , was prepared by the reaction of a dendritic macroinitiator having eight TEMPO‐based alkoxyamines, [G‐3]‐OH , with 4,4′‐bis(chlorocarbonyl)biphenyl. The nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) of styrene (St) from Star‐16 gave 16‐arm star polymers with PDI of 1.19–1.47, and NMPR of 4‐vinylpyridine from the 16‐arm star polymer gave 16‐arm star diblock copolymers with PDI of 1.30–1.43. The ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone from [G‐3]‐OH and the subsequent NMRP of St gave AB8 9‐miktoarm star copolymers with PDI of 1.30–1.38. The benzyl ether linkages of the 16‐arm star polymers and the AB8 9‐miktoarm star copolymers were cleaved by treating with Me3SiI, and the resultant poly(St) arms were investigated by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The SEC results showed PDIs of 1.23–1.28 and 1.18–1.22 for the star polymers and miktoarm stars copolymers, respectively, showing that they have well‐controlled poly(St) arms. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An asymmetric difunctional initiator 2‐phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromo propanoate ( 1 ) was used for the synthesis of ABC‐type methyl methacrylate (MMA)‐tert‐butylacrylate (tBA)‐styrene (St) triblock copolymers via a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and stable free‐radical polymerization (SFRP). The ATRP‐ATRP‐SFRP or SFRP‐ATRP‐ATRP route led to ABC‐type triblock copolymers with controlled molecular weight and moderate polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.35). The block copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. The retaining chain‐end functionality and the applying halide exchange afforded high blocking efficiency as well as maintained control over entire routes. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A general method for the transformation of “living” carbocationic into “living” radical polymerization, without any modification of chain ends, is reported for the preparation of ABA block copolymers. For example, α,ω-difunctional polyisobutene, capped with several units of styrene, Cl-St-PIB-St-Cl, prepared cationically (Mn = 7800, Mw/Mn = 1.31) was used as an efficient difunctional macroinitiator for homogeneous “living” atom transfer radical polymerization to prepare triblock copolymers with styrene, PSt-PIB-PSt (Mn = 28,800, Mw/Mn = 1.14), methyl acrylate, PMA-PIB-PMA (Mn = 31,810, Mw/Mn = 1.42), isobornyl acrylate, PIBA-PIB-PIBA (Mn = 33,500, Mw/Mn = 1.21), and methyl methacrylate, PMMA-PIB-PMMA (Mn = 33,500, Mw/Mn = 1.47). © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new series of 1,1,3,3‐tetraethylisoindoline‐2‐oxyl (TEISO)‐based alkoxyamines was prepared. The half‐lives for thermal dissociation indicated that the most sterically congested cumyl‐TEISO alkoxymine had the greatest potential as an initiator for the polymerization of monomers at lower temperatures. The polymerization of styrene at 110 °C gave a linear evolution of Mn with conversion in the early stages. Further evidence for the “living” nature was given by the polydispersities of the polymers that remained low (Mw/Mn = 1.13–1.27) throughout the polymerization (up to 80% conversion). No polymer was formed for the styrene system in a reasonable time below 100 °C. High‐performance liquid chromatographic/mass spectrometric investigations of the distribution of trapped oligomers containing one to nine monomer units formed at 60 °C revealed that the trapping of oligomeric cumyl–styryl radicals by TEISO is irreversible at this temperature. Methyl methacrylate polymerized with cumyl‐TEISO at 60–70 °C, although the initial high rates of polymerization soon decreased to zero at low conversions (10–15%), and the high polydispersities (Mw/Mn = 1.42–1.73) indicated significant side reactions. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Hybrid dendritic‐linear block copolymers were made in one‐pot by convergent living anionic polymerization. Dendritic polystyrene macroinitiators were synthesized by slowly adding a mixture of either vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) or 4‐(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene (CDMSS) and styrene (1 : 10 molar ratio of coupling agent to styrene) to a solution of living polystyryllithium. The addition was ceased prior to the addition of a stoichiometric amount of coupling agent to retain a living chain end. To the living dendritically branched polystyrene was then added either styrene or isoprene to polymerize a linear block from the dendritic polystyrene. The resulting copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography coupled with multiangle laser light scattering (GPC‐MALLS), which clearly demonstrated the formation of diblock copolymers. The diblock copolymers were further characterized by 1H NMR, which showed the presence of the two blocks in the case of dendritic polystyrene‐block‐linear polyisoprene. The measurement of intrinsic viscosity showed that the dilute solution properties of the block copolymers are greatly influenced by the dendritic portion. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The synthesis of arborescent styrenic homopolymers and copolymers was achieved by anionic polymerization and grafting. Styrene and p‐(3‐butenyl)styrene were first copolymerized using sec‐butyllithium in toluene, to generate a linear copolymer with a weight‐average molecular weight Mw = 4000 and Mw/Mn = 1.05. The pendant double bonds of the copolymer were then epoxidized with m‐chloroperbenzoic acid. A comb‐branched (or arborescent generation G0) copolymer was obtained by coupling the epoxidized substrate with living styrene‐p‐(3‐butenyl)styrene copolymer chains with Mw ≈ 5000 in a toluene/tetrahydrofuran mixture. Further cycles of epoxidation and coupling reactions while maintaining Mw ≈ 5000 for the side chains yielded arborescent copolymers of generations G1–G3. A series of arborescent styrene homopolymers was also obtained by grafting Mw ≈ 5000 polystyrene side chains onto the linear and G0–G2 copolymer substrates. Size exclusion chromatography measurements showed that the graft polymers have low polydispersity indices (Mw/Mn = 1.02–1.15) and molecular weights increasing geometrically over successive generations. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical copolymerization of N‐substituted maleimides such as N‐phenylmaleimide (PhMI), N‐cyclohexylmaleimide (ChMI), and N‐butylmaleimide (NBMI) with styrene initiated with dendritic polyarylether 2‐bromoisobutyrates in an ionic liquid, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6]), at room temperature and anisole at 110 °C was investigated. The dendritic‐linear block copolymers obtained in ionic liquid possessed well‐defined molecular weight and low polydispersity (1.05 < Mw/Mn < 1.32) and could be used as a macroinitiator for chain‐extension polymerization, suggesting the living nature of the reaction system. The ionic liquids containing catalyst could be recycled in the atom transfer radical polymerization systems without further treatment. Compared with polymerization conducted in anisole, the polymerization in ionic liquid had a stronger tendency for alternation. The tendency for alternation decreased in the order PhMI > NBMI > ChMI in [bmim][PF6] and PhMI > ChMI > NBMI in anisole. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate, in this article, the facile synthesis of a broad class of low‐polydispersity ethylene–norbornene (E–NB) copolymers having various controllable comonomer composition distributions, including gradient, alternating, diblock, triblock, and block–gradient, through “living”/quasiliving E–NB copolymerization facilitated with a single Pd – diimine catalyst ( 1 ). This synthesis benefits from two remarkable features of catalyst 1 , its high capability in NB incorporation and high versatility in rendering E–NB “living” copolymerization at various NB feed concentrations ([NB]0) while under an ethylene pressure of 1 atm and at 15 °C. At higher [NB]0 values between 0.42 and 0.64 M, E–NB copolymerization with 1 renders nearly perfect alternating copolymers. At lower [NB]0 values (0.11–0.22 M), gradient copolymers yield due to gradual reduction in NB concentration, with the starting chain end containing primarily alternating segments and the finishing end being hyperbranched polyethylene segments. Through two‐stage or three‐stage “living” copolymerization with sequential NB feeding, diblock or triblock copolymers containing gradient block(s) have been designed. This work thus greatly expands the family of E–NB copolymers. All the copolymers have controllable molecular weight and relatively low polydispersity (with polydispersity index below 1.20). Most notably, some of the gradient and block–gradient copolymers have been found to exhibit the characteristic broad glass transitions as a result of their possession of broad composition distribution. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two representative bulk polymers, polyolefin (PO) and polystyrene (PS), were molecularly connected to form PO‐block‐PS by sequentially performing coordination and anionic polymerizations in one pot. Ethylene/1‐octene copolymerization was performed using a typical ansa‐metallocene catalyst, rac‐[Me2Si(2‐methylindenyl)]2ZrCl2, in the presence of (benzyl)2zinc to grow PO‐chains at the Zn site. Anionic styrene polymerization was subsequently performed using nBuLi·(tmeda) (tmeda, N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine) initiator to consecutively grow PS‐chains at the Zn site. The composition and the molecular weight of the PO‐blocks were controllable depending on the feed amounts of 1‐octene and (benzyl)2zinc (1‐octene fraction: ~20, ~40 wt %; PO‐Mw, 77,000–174,000) and the PS‐block size was also controlled (PS‐Mn, ~21,000) with the complete conversion of the styrene monomer. Formation of block copolymers was evident in the GPC curves, TEM images, and strain‐stress curves. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 3110–3118  相似文献

Heterotelechelic polystyrene (PS), poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA), and poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA), containing both azide and triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) protected acetylene end groups, were prepared in good control (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.24) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The end groups were independently applied in two successive “click” reactions, that is: first the azide termini were functionalized and, after deprotection, the acetylene moieties were utilized for a second conjugation step. As a proof of concept, PS was consecutively functionalized with propargyl alcohol and azidoacetic acid, as confirmed by MALDI‐ToF MS. In addition, the same methodology was employed to modularly build up an ABC type triblock terpolymer. Size exclusion chromatography measurements demonstrated first coupling of PtBA to PS and, after the deprotection of the acetylene functionality on PS, connection of PMA, yielding a PMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PtBA triblock terpolymer. The reactions were driven to completion using a slight excess of azide functionalized polymers. Reduction of the residual azide groups into amines allowed easy removal of this excess of polymer by column chromatography. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An N‐alkoxyamine macroinitiator bearing a polymeric nitroxide cap was synthesized and used to investigate the effect of nitroxide size on the rate of nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP). This macroinitiator was prepared from asymmetric double‐headed initiator 9 , which contains both an α‐bromoester and an N‐alkoxyamine functionality. Poly(methyl methacrylate) was grown by atom transfer radical polymerization from the α‐bromoester end of this initiator, resulting in a macroinitiator (Mn = 31,000; PDI = 1.34) bearing a nitroxide cap permanently attached to a polymer chain. The polymerization kinetics of this macroinitiator in NMRP were compared with known N‐alkoxyamine initiator 1 . It was found that the rate of polymerization was unaffected by the size of the macromolecular nitroxide cap. It was confirmed that NMRP using this macroinitiator is a “living” process. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 2015–2025, 2007  相似文献

Dendritic multifunctional macroinitiators having 12 TEMPO‐based alkoxyamines were prepared by the reaction of a benzyl alcohol having 4 TEMPO‐based alkoxyamines with 1,3,5‐tris[(4‐chlorocarbonyl)phenyl]benzene and 1,3,5‐tris(4‐isocyanatophenyl)benzene. Using the dodecafunctional macroinitiators, TEMPO‐mediated radical polymerizations of styrene (St) were carried out at 120 °C, and 12‐arm star polymers ( star‐12 ) with narrow polydispersities of Mw/Mn = 1.06–1.26 were obtained. To evaluate the livingness for the TEMPO‐mediated radical polymerizations of St, hydrolysis of the ester bonds of the 12‐arm star polymers and subsequent SEC measurements were carried out. Furthermore, using star‐12 as the macroinitiator, TEMPO‐mediated radical polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine (4‐VP) was carried out, and well‐defined poly(St)‐b‐poly(4‐VP) 12‐arm star diblock copolymers with Mw/Mn = 1.18–1.19 were obtained. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft copolymers composed of “Y”‐shaped polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)2 (PS‐b‐PEO2) as side chains and hyperbranched poly(glycerol) (HPG) as core were synthesized by a combination of “click” chemistry and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via “graft from” and “graft onto” strategies. Firstly, macroinitiators HPG‐Br were obtained by esterification of hydroxyl groups on HPG with bromoisobutyryl bromide, and then by “graft from” strategy, graft copolymers HPG‐g‐(PS‐Br) were synthesized by ATRP of St and further HPG‐g‐(PS‐N3) were prepared by azidation with NaN3. Then, the precursors (Bz‐PEO)2‐alkyne with a single alkyne group at the junction point and an inert benzyl group at each end was synthesized by sequentially ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of EO using 3‐[(1‐ethoxyethyl)‐ethoxyethyl]‐1,2‐propanediol (EEPD) and diphenylmethylpotassium (DPMK) as coinitiator, termination of living polymeric species by benzyl bromide, recovery of protected hydroxyl groups by HCl and modification by propargyl bromide. Finally, the “click” chemistry was conducted between HPG‐g‐(PS‐N3) and (Bz‐PEO)2‐alkyne in the presence of N,N,N′,N″,N”‐pentamethyl diethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/CuBr system by “graft onto” strategy, and the graft copolymers were characterized by SEC, 1H NMR and FTIR in details. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
