Cographs form the minimal family of graphs containing K1 that is closed with respect to complementation and disjoint union. We discuss vertex partitions of graphs into the smallest number of cographs. We introduce a new parameter, calling the minimum order of such a partition the c-chromatic number of the graph. We begin by axiomatizing several well-known graphical parameters as motivation for this function. We present several bounds on c-chromatic number in terms of well-known expressions. We show that if a graph is triangle-free, then its chromatic number is bounded between the c-chromatic number and twice this number. We show that both bounds are sharp for graphs with arbitrarily high girth. This provides an alternative proof to a result by Broere and Mynhardt; namely, there exist triangle-free graphs with arbitrarily large c-chromatic numbers. We show that any planar graph with girth at least 11 has a c-chromatic number at most two. We close with several remarks on computational complexity. In particular, we show that computing the c-chromatic number is NP-complete for planar graphs.  相似文献

The Grundy (or First-Fit) chromatic number of a graph G is the maximum number of colors used by the First-Fit coloring of the graph G. In this paper we give upper bounds for the Grundy number of graphs in terms of vertex degrees, girth, clique partition number and for the line graphs. Next we show that if the Grundy number of a graph is large enough then the graph contains a subgraph of prescribed large girth and Grundy number.  相似文献

An oriented graph is a directed graph with no directed cycle of length one or two. The relative clique number of an oriented graph is the cardinality of a largest subset X of vertices such that each pair of vertices is either adjacent or connected by a directed 2-path. It is known that the oriented relative clique number of a planar graph is at most 80. Here we improve the upper bound to 32. We also prove an upper bound of 14 for oriented relative clique number of triangle-free planar graphs. Furthermore, we determine the exact values of oriented relative clique number for the families of outerplanar graphs with girth at least g and planar graphs with girth at least g+2 for all g3. Moreover, we study the relation of oriented relative clique number with oriented chromatic number, oriented absolute clique number and maximum degree of a graph. We also show that oriented relative clique number of a connected subcubic graph is at most seven which weakly supports a conjecture by Sopena (JGT 1997).  相似文献

In this paper we obtain some upper bounds for the b-chromatic number of K1,s-free graphs, graphs with given minimum clique partition and bipartite graphs. These bounds are given in terms of either the clique number or the chromatic number of a graph or the biclique number for a bipartite graph. We show that all the bounds are tight.  相似文献

We prove that a triangle-free graph G is a tolerance graph if and only if there exists a set of consecutively ordered stars that partition the edges of G. Since tolerance graphs are weakly chordal, a tolerance graph is bipartite if and only if it is triangle-free. We, therefore, characterize those tolerance graphs that are also bipartite. We use this result to show that in general, the class of interval bigraphs properly contains tolerance graphs that are triangle-free (and hence bipartite).  相似文献

We obtain lower bounds on the clique number and chromatic number for finite simple graphs using Ollivier’s Ricci curvature. Also we study the relations between girth and curvature. From these, we obtain curvature conditions for 3-colorability of a planar graph.  相似文献

We prove that a triangular grid without local cuts is (almost) always Hamiltonian. This suggests an efficient scheme for rendering triangulated manifolds by graphics hardware. We also show that the Hamiltonian Cycle problem is NP-Complete for planar subcubic graphs of arbitrarily high girth. As a by-product we prove that there exist tri-Hamiltonian planar subcubic graphs of arbitrarily high girth.  相似文献

A planar ordered set has a triangle-free, planar covering graph; on the other hand, there are nonplanar ordered sets whose covering graphs are planar. We show thatevery triangle-free planar graph has a planar upward drawing. This planar upward drawing can be constructed in time, polynomial in the number of vertices. Our results shed light on the apparently difficult problem, of long-standing, whether there is aneffective planarity-testing procedure for an ordered set.Supported in part by the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung.Supported in part by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.  相似文献

We study complexity and approximation of min weighted node coloring in planar, bipartite and split graphs. We show that this problem is NP-hard in planar graphs, even if they are triangle-free and their maximum degree is bounded above by 4. Then, we prove that min weighted node coloring is NP-hard in P8-free bipartite graphs, but polynomial for P5-free bipartite graphs. We next focus on approximability in general bipartite graphs and improve earlier approximation results by giving approximation ratios matching inapproximability bounds. We next deal with min weighted edge coloring in bipartite graphs. We show that this problem remains strongly NP-hard, even in the case where the input graph is both cubic and planar. Furthermore, we provide an inapproximability bound of 7/6−ε, for any ε>0 and we give an approximation algorithm with the same ratio. Finally, we show that min weighted node coloring in split graphs can be solved by a polynomial time approximation scheme.  相似文献

A graph G is well-covered if every maximal independent set has the same cardinality. This paper investigates when the Cartesian product of two graphs is well-covered. We prove that if G and H both belong to a large class of graphs that includes all non-well-covered triangle-free graphs and most well-covered triangle-free graphs, then G×H is not well-covered. We also show that if G is not well-covered, then neither is G×G. Finally, we show that G×G is not well-covered for all graphs of girth at least 5 by introducing super well-covered graphs and classifying all such graphs of girth at least 5.  相似文献

An injective coloring of a graph is a vertex coloring where two vertices have distinct colors if a path of length two exists between them. In this paper some results on injective colorings of planar graphs with few colors are presented. We show that all planar graphs of girth ≥ 19 and maximum degree Δ are injectively Δ-colorable. We also show that all planar graphs of girth ≥ 10 are injectively (Δ+1)-colorable, that Δ+4 colors are sufficient for planar graphs of girth ≥ 5 if Δ is large enough, and that subcubic planar graphs of girth ≥ 7 are injectively 5-colorable.  相似文献

We employ a result of Moshe Rosenfeld to show that the minimum semidefinite rank of a triangle-free graph with no isolated vertex must be at least half the number of its vertices. We define a Rosenfeld graph to be such a graph that achieves equality in this bound, and we explore the structure of these special graphs. Their structure turns out to be intimately connected with the zero-nonzero patterns of the unitary matrices. Finally, we suggest an exploration of the connection between the girth of a graph and its minimum semidefinite rank, and provide a conjecture in this direction.  相似文献

A graph is hypohamiltonian if it is not Hamiltonian, but the deletion of any single vertex gives a Hamiltonian graph. Until now, the smallest known planar hypohamiltonian graph had 42 vertices, a result due to Araya and Wiener. That result is here improved upon by 25 planar hypohamiltonian graphs of order 40, which are found through computer‐aided generation of certain families of planar graphs with girth 4 and a fixed number of 4‐faces. It is further shown that planar hypohamiltonian graphs exist for all orders greater than or equal to 42. If Hamiltonian cycles are replaced by Hamiltonian paths throughout the definition of hypohamiltonian graphs, we get the definition of hypotraceable graphs. It is shown that there is a planar hypotraceable graph of order 154 and of all orders greater than or equal to 156. We also show that the smallest planar hypohamiltonian graph of girth 5 has 45 vertices.  相似文献

The maximum genus of a connected graph G is the maximum among the genera of all compact orientable 2-manifolds upon which G has 2-cell embeddings. In the theorems that follow the use of an edge-adding technique is combined with the well-known Edmonds' technique to produce the desired results. Planar graphs of arbitrarily large maximum genus are displayed in Theorem 1. Theorem 2 shows that the possibility for arbitrarily large difference between genus and maximum genus is not limited to planar graphs. In particular, we show that the wheel graph, the standard maximal planar graph, and the prism graph are upper embeddable. We then show that given m and n, there is a graph of genus n and maximum genus larger than mn.  相似文献

The clique number of an undirected graph G is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of G and is a well‐known lower bound for the chromatic number of G. Every proper k‐coloring of G may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge‐preserving vertex mapping) of G to the complete graph of order k. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number coincide. However, the structure of oriented cliques is much less understood than in the undirected case. In this article, we study the structure of outerplanar and planar oriented cliques. We first provide a list of 11 graphs and prove that an outerplanar graph can be oriented as an oriented clique if and only if it contains one of these graphs as a spanning subgraph. Klostermeyer and MacGillivray conjectured that the order of a planar oriented clique is at most 15, which was later proved by Sen. We show that any planar oriented clique on 15 vertices must contain a particular oriented graph as a spanning subgraph, thus reproving the above conjecture. We also provide tight upper bounds for the order of planar oriented cliques of girth k for all .  相似文献

Motivated by the construction of invariants of links in 3-space, we study spin models on graphs for which all edge weights (considered as matrices) belong to the Bose-Mesner algebra of some association scheme. We show that for series-parallel graphs the computation of the partition function can be performed by using series-parallel reductions of the graph appropriately coupled with operations in the Bose-Mesner algebra. Then we extend this approach to all plane graphs by introducing star-triangle transformations and restricting our attention to a special class of Bose-Mesner algebras which we call exactly triply regular. We also introduce the following two properties for Bose-Mesner algebras. The planar duality property (defined in the self-dual case) expresses the partition function for any plane graph in terms of the partition function for its dual graph, and the planar reversibility property asserts that the partition function for any plane graph is equal to the partition function for the oppositely oriented graph. Both properties hold for any Bose-Mesner algebra if one considers only series-parallel graphs instead of arbitrary plane graphs. We relate these notions to spin models for link invariants, and among other results we show that the Abelian group Bose-Mesner algebras have the planar duality property and that for self-dual Bose-Mesner algebras, planar duality implies planar reversibility. We also prove that for exactly triply regular Bose-Mesner algebras, to check one of the above properties it is sufficient to check it on the complete graph on four vertices. A number of applications, examples and open problems are discussed.  相似文献

The main result of the papzer is that any planar graph with odd girth at least 10k−7 has a homomorphism to the Kneser graph G k 2 k +1, i.e. each vertex can be colored with k colors from the set {1,2,…,2k+1} so that adjacent vertices have no colors in common. Thus, for example, if the odd girth of a planar graph is at least 13, then the graph has a homomorphism to G 2 5, also known as the Petersen graph. Other similar results for planar graphs are also obtained with better bounds and additional restrictions. Received: June 14, 1999 Final version received: July 5, 2000  相似文献

We show that the problem to decide whether a graph can be made triangle-free with at most k edge deletions remains NP-complete even when restricted to planar graphs of maximum degree seven. In addition, we provide polynomial-time data reduction rules for this problem and obtain problem kernels consisting of 6k vertices for general graphs and 11k/3 vertices for planar graphs.  相似文献

We show that every K 4-free planar graph with at most ν edge-disjoint triangles contains a set of at most ${\frac32\nu}$ edges whose removal makes the graph triangle-free. Moreover, equality is attained only when G is the edge-disjoint union of 5-wheels plus possibly some edges that are not in triangles. We also show that the same statement is true if instead of planar graphs we consider the class of graphs in which each edge belongs to at most two triangles. In contrast, it is known that for any c?<?2 there are K 4-free graphs with at most ν edge-disjoint triangles that need more than edges to cover all triangles.  相似文献

Erd?s conjectured that if G is a triangle free graph of chromatic number at least k≥3, then it contains an odd cycle of length at least k 2?o(1) [13,15]. Nothing better than a linear bound ([3], Problem 5.1.55 in [16]) was so far known. We make progress on this conjecture by showing that G contains an odd cycle of length at least Ω(k log logk). Erd?s’ conjecture is known to hold for graphs with girth at least five. We show that if a graph with girth four is C 5 free, then Erd?s’ conjecture holds. When the number of vertices is not too large we can prove better bounds on χ. We also give bounds on the chromatic number of graphs with at most r cycles of length 1 mod k, or at most s cycles of length 2 mod k, or no cycles of length 3 mod k. Our techniques essentially consist of using a depth first search tree to decompose the graph into ordered paths, which are then fed to an online coloring algorithm. Using this technique we give simple proofs of some old results, and also obtain several other results. We also obtain a lower bound on the number of colors which an online coloring algorithm needs to use to color triangle free graphs.  相似文献
