The field-induced reorientation of the magnetization of ferromagnetic films is treated within the framework of many-body Green's function theory by considering all components of the magnetization. We present a new method for the calculation of expectation values in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the equations of motion matrix for the set of Green's functions. This formulation allows a straightforward extension of the monolayer case to thin films with many layers and for arbitrary spin and moreover provides a practicable procedure for numerical computation. The model Hamiltonian includes a Heisenberg term, an external magnetic field, a second-order uniaxial single-ion anisotropy, and the magnetic dipole-dipole coupling. We utilize the Tyablikov (RPA) decoupling for the exchange interaction terms and the Anderson-Callen decoupling for the anisotropy terms. The dipole coupling is treated in the mean-field approximation, a procedure which we demonstrate to be a sufficiently good approximation for realistic coupling strengths. We apply the new method to monolayers with spin and to multilayer systems with S=1. We compare some of our results to those where mean-field theory (MFT) is applied to all interactions, pointing out some significant differences. We present a new type of temperature driven spin reorientation transition (SRT) in thin films. It can occur when the lattice and the shape anisotropy favor different easy directions of the magnetization. Due to different temperature dependencies of the two contributions the effective anisotropy may change its sign and thus the direction of the magnetization as a function of temperature may change. Contrary to the well-known reorientation transition caused by competing surface and bulk anisotropy contributions the reorientation that we discuss is also found in film systems with a uniform lattice anisotropy. The results of our theoretical model study may have experimental relevance for film systems with positive lattice anisotropy, as e.g. thin iron films grown on copper.  相似文献

The many-body Green's function theory developed in our previous work for treating the reorientation of the magnetization of thin ferromagnetic films is extended to include the exchange anisotropy. This leads to additional momentum dependencies which require some non-trivial changes in the formalism. The theory is developed for arbitrary spin values S and for multilayers. The effects of the exchange anisotropy and the single-ion anisotropy, which was treated in our earlier work, on the magnetic properties of thin ferromagnetic films are compared. A numerical method is described for evaluating transverse spin correlations in the random phase approximation. Quantum spin-fluctuation corrections to sublattice magnetization are evaluated for the antiferromagnetic ground state of the half-filled Hubbard model in two and three dimensions in the whole U/t range. Extension to the case of defects in the AF is also discussed for spin vacancies and low-U impurities. In the limit, the vacancy-induced enhancement in the spin fluctuation correction is obtained for the spin-vacancy problem in two dimensions, for vacancy concentration up to the percolation threshold. For low-U impurities, the overall spin fluctuation correction is found to be strongly suppressed, although surprisingly spin fluctuations are locally enhanced at the low-U sites. Adding a non-magnetic Cu overlayer on Ni8/Cu(001) is known to induce the reorientation of the magnetic easy axis from in-plane to out-of-plane and to reduce the Curie temperature. In this paper both effects are described on the same footing using an effective Heisenberg trilayer. The model takes into account thermal fluctuations of the magnetization and allows to separate explicitly between two possible mechanisms behind the experimental observations, namely between a reduction of the magnetic moment by hybridization and a lattice relaxation at the Ni/Cu interface. Ferromagnetic resonance data for the reorientation and the decreased Curie temperature due to the Cu cap layer are best reproduced by assuming a reduction of the magnetic moment at the interface by ≈1/3.  相似文献

Ferromagnetic spin chains of a hexagonal lattice coupled by a weak antiferromagnetic interaction J1 develop a helix arrangement if the intrachain antiferromagnetic NNN exchange J2 is sufficiently large. We show that the classical minimum energy spin configuration is an umbrella when an external magnetic field is applied. The scenario is dramatically changed by quantum fluctuations. Indeed we find that the zero point motion forces the spins in a plane containing the magnetic field so that classical expectation is deceptive for our model. Our result is obtained by controlled expansion in the low field-long wavelength modulation limit. Received: 9 September 1997 / Revised: 15 October 1997 / Accepted: 17 November 1997  相似文献

The zero temperature phase diagram of a one-dimensional ferromagnet with cubic single ion anisotropy in an external magnetic field is studied. The mean-field approximation and the density-matrix renormalization group method are applied. Two phases at finite magnetic fields are identified: a canted phase with spontaneously broken symmetry and a phase with magnetization along the magnetic field. Both methods predict that the canted phase exists even for the single-ion anisotropy strong enough to destroy the magnetic order at zero magnetic field. In contrast to the mean-field theory, the density-matrix renormalization group predicts a reentrant behavior for the model. The character of the phase transition at finite magnetic field has also been considered and the critical index has been found. Received 9 May 2000 and Received in final form 5 July 2000  相似文献

A theoretical model is presented for the study of the scattering of magnons at an extended symmetric atomic well in very thin magnetic films. The thin film consists of three cubic atomic planes with ordered spins coupled by Heisenberg exchange, and the system is supported on a non-magnetic substrate, and considered otherwise free from magnetic interactions. The coherent transmission and reflection scattering coefficients are derived as elements of a Landauer type scattering matrix. Transmission and reflection scattering cross sections are hence calculated specifically, as a function of the varying local magnetic exchange on the inhomogeneous boundary. Detailed numerical results for the individual incident film magnons, and for the calculated overall magnon conductance, show characteristic transmission properties, with associated Fano resonances, depending on the magnetic boundary conditions and on the magnon incidence.  相似文献

This paper describes the magneto-optical effects of metallic multilayers under the condition of total internal reflection. In the framework of the Green's dyadic technique, we present numerical simulations which account for the variation of the magneto-optical signal with the angle of incidence. The Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) has become a new technique of characterization for thin films. We show, in this paper, optical effects due to a slight variation of the indice of refraction for thin dielectric films in reflection by the reflectivity and the Kerr rotation spectra of an optimized system. In transmission, this variation is brought to the fore by the near-field intensity spectra. Received 29 March 2000  相似文献

We study the spin ladder model with interactions between spins on neighboring rungs. The model Hamiltonian with the exact singlet ground state degenerated with ferromagnetic state is obtained. The singlet ground state wave function has a special recurrent form and depends on two parameters. Spin correlations in the singlet ground state show double-spiral structure with period of spirals equals to the system size. For special values of parameters they have exponential decay. The spectrum of the model is gapless and there are asymptotically degenerated excited states for special values of parameters in the thermodynamic limit. Received 7 May 1999  相似文献

The magnon energy bands are studied for a four-layer ferromagnetic superlattice, with regard to the effects of the competition between the anisotropy and the spin quantum number. A special attention is also paid on the effects of the symmetry of the system. It is found that three modulated energy gaps exist in the magnon energy band along Kx direction perpendicular to the superlattice plane. The magnetic anisotropy affects significantly the magnon energy gaps. The zero energy gap Δω23 correlates with the conditions between anisotropy constants, D1+D3=D2+D4 and D1=D3 (or D2=D4), while the disappearance of the magnon energy gaps Δω12 and Δω34 corresponds to a translational symmetry of x-direction in a unit cell. When the parameters of the system deviate from these conditions, the energy gaps Δω12, Δω23 and Δω34 become larger. There is a competition effect of the anisotropy and the spin quantum number on the magnon energy gaps Δω12 and Δω23. When the symmetry of the system is higher, the competition can achieve a balance to cause the zero energy gap.  相似文献

We study the effect of dipolar interactions on a magnetic striped monolayer with a microscopic unit cell of square symmetry, and of size spins. Even if the aspect ratio r=N x /N y is very large, an in-plane shape anisotropy is always negligible, except if Ny is fairly small (N y <40). In-plane domains are not possible, except for values of the dipolar coupling larger than the domain wall energy. We study the one-dimensional isotropic spin-1 Heisenberg magnet with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (nn) and next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) interactions by using the modified spin wave theory (MSWT). The ground state energy and the singlet-triplet energy gap are obtained for several values of j, defined as the ratio of the nnn interaction constant to the nn one. We also compare two different ways of implementing the MSWT currently found in the literature, and show that, despite the remarkable differences between the equations to be solved in each procedure, the results given by both are equivalent, except for the predicted value of the jmax, the maximum value of j accessible in each treatment. Here, we suggest that jmax is related to the disorder point of the first kind. Our results show that the ground state and the gap energies increase with j, for j ≤jmax, in accordance to previous numerical results.  相似文献

The ground state properties of S =2 ferromagnets with isotropic Heisenberg exchange (J) and single-ion cubic anisotropy (D) are studied. The perturbation theory for is used to find an effective Hamiltonian up to the fourth order for 1, 2 and 3 dimensions. It is shown that in opposition to the MFA prediction there is the quadrupolar long range order at T = 0 in the non-magnetic state of the system without a quadrupolar type of interaction. The effect is a consequence of the quantum nature of the model. Received: 19 February 1998 / Accepted: 17 March 1998  相似文献

Green’s function theory is applied to an alternating two-element multilayer ferromagnetic film. The Hamiltonian is based on the Heisenberg model with a second-order uniaxial single-ion anisotropy and with the interaction between the layer in the interfaces. Magnetization and the phase transition in such system are derived for several sets of material parameters.  相似文献

Novel massive quantum states appearing in spin chains under a strong magnetic field are discussed. These states lead to plateaus in magnetization curves. When the systems are axially symmetric and the field is applied parallel to the symmetry-axis, the phenomena are analogous to metal-insulator transitions. Striking features of the plateau phenomena - exactness and rationality - are explained as consequences the commensurability condition to the underlying lattice. The effects of the planar anisotropy are also discussed in detail. Received: 16 February 1998 / Revised: 20 April 1998 / Accepted: 30 April 1998  相似文献

We present a field-theoretic renormalization group calculation in two loop order for classical O(N)-models with an inverse square interaction in the vicinity of their lower critical dimensionality one. The magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures is shown to diverge like with a=(N-2)/(N-1) and . From a comparison with the exactly solvable Haldane-Shastry model we find that the same temperature dependence applies also to ferromagnetic quantum spin chains. We studied the magnetic properties of ultra-thin Mn films deposited on Ag (001) held at 80 K with soft X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism. The observed shape and branching ratio of the Mn 2p absorption edge as a function of Mn coverage demonstrate that, up to , the Mn adopts a stable high spin state similar to the Mn atom Hund's rule 6 S 5/2 ground state. Above this coverage a rapid transition from localized high spin to itinerant low spin behavior of the Mn 3d electrons is evidenced. Magnetic circular dichroism shows no sign of long range ferromagnetic order in these films at 80 K. The data, first confirm the large atomic-like local magnetic moment, and second are in line with the in-plane antiferromagnetic order, reported recently (Phys. Rev. B 57, 1141 (1998)), for Mn in the nearly ideal on-top Mn monolayer formed by 0.9 ML deposited at 80 K. Received: 4 May 1998  相似文献

The magnetism is calculated for substitutional alloyed of Crx(Mnx)V1-x monolayers (MLs) and CrxMn1-x on V (001) surface with a variety of concentrations (x = 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75). The substitutional surface alloys were treated by an artificial super cell construction. Parallel magnetic ordering is obtained for all the considered structures. The surface net magnetization increases in terms of Cr (Mn) concentration in Crx(Mnx)V1-x/V (001) system, while no serious variations occur in CrxMn1-x/V (001). Vanadium atoms at the interfacial layers acquire appreciable magnetic moments antiferromagneticlly (AF) coupled with the surface moments. We study the phase diagram of coupled spin-1/2 chains with bilinear and (chiral) three-spin exchange interactions in a magnetic field. The model is soluble on a one-parametric line in the space of coupling constants connecting the limiting cases of a single and two decoupled Heisenberg chains with nearest neighbour exchange only. We give a complete classification of the low-energy properties of the integrable system and introduce a numerical method which allows to study the possible phases of spin ladder systems away from the soluble line in a magnetic field.
