As determined by scratch tests, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octadecylphosphonic acid (OPA) on a muscovite mica substrate were found to be mechanically robust and to serve as a lubricant to protect the underlying mica substrate. For comparison purposes, three polymer films were subjected to scratch tests under the same conditions. The scratch tests were conducted using a diamond-tipped stylus, and the resultant scratches were examined using atomic force microscopy. The excellent mechanical strength of OPA SAMs is supported by analysis with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, which suggests that the headgroup of the OPA is strongly bonded to the substrate atoms. The molecular lubrication provided by OPA SAMs suggests that the interaction between the headgroup and the substrate is sufficiently strong to endure significant shear force and that the hydrocarbon chains are able to dissipate shear energy. 相似文献

We have examined the nanoscale adsorption of molecular water under ambient conditions onto a series of well-characterized functionalized surfaces produced by Cu(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC or "click") reactions on alkyne-terminated self-assembled monolayers on silicon. Water contact angle (CA) measurements reveal a range of macroscopic hydrophilicity that does not correlate with the tendency of these surfaces to adsorb water at the molecular level. X-ray reflectometry has been used to follow the kinetics of water adsorption on these "click"-functionalized surfaces, and also shows that dense continuous molecular water layers are formed over 30 h. For example, a highly hydrophilic surface, functionalized by an oligo(ethylene glycol) moiety (with a CA = 34°) showed 2.9 ? of adsorbed water after 30 h, while the almost hydrophobic underlying alkyne-terminated monolayer (CA = 84°) showed 5.6 ? of adsorbed water over the same period. While this study highlights the capacity of X-ray reflectometry to study the structure of adsorbed water on these surfaces, it should also serve as a warning for those intending to characterize self-assembled monolayers and functionalized surfaces to avoid contamination by even trace amounts of water vapor. Moreover, contact angle measurements alone cannot be relied upon to predict the likely degree of moisture uptake on such surfaces. 相似文献

We have investigated the growth of octadecylsiloxane (ODS) self-assembled monolayers on mica. Freshly cleaved muscovite mica and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) dissolved in toluene (c = 1.0 mmol/L) have been used as substrate and precursor, respectively. The water content of the adsorption solution was between 14.6 and 16.6 mmol/L. Adsorption experiments were carried out in a temperature range between 5 and 45 degrees C, and the obtained submonolayer ODS films were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Besides the morphology of the films, also information on the surface coverage has been obtained by quantitative evaluation of the AFM images. Depending on the temperature, evidence for both ordered and disordered expanded ODS phases has been found. The pronounced maximum in surface coverage--in contrast to adsorption on silicon substrates--at a temperature of about 27 degrees C and the different morphology of the submonolayer films as compared to silicon substrates could be explained in terms of a deposition, diffusion, and aggregation (DDA) model. 相似文献

Self-assembled alkyl chain based monolayers on mica are important for industrial and technological processes since they can be employed for an organic modification of the inorganic substrate. The conformational structure and orientational order of the films determine the interaction of the modified substrate with the environment and the chemical character and stability of its surface. We have studied the conformational order in ion exchanged dialkylammonium monolayers adsorbed on mica depending on the length of the alkyl chains systematically with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). In addition, films were characterized by water contact angle measurements. The experimentally determined average tilt angles of the chains are discussed in terms of the degree of order. It was found that the absolute number of gauche defects in the films increases with decreasing chain length. 相似文献

The formation of mixed monolayers of hydridospherosilsesquioxane clusters (H(8)Si(8)O(12)) and alkylsilanes (H(2n+1)C(n)SiH(3)) on Au has been investigated using X-ray photoelectron and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopies and scanning tunneling microscopy. All of the techniques indicate the displacement of the majority of the siloxane clusters from the surface in favor of the alkylsilane. 相似文献

Dialkyldimethylammonium films on mica prepared via ion exchange from solution have been reported to be of high quality in terms of their density and molecular orientation. Different preparation procedures are described in the literature. The molecular order and the inclination of the alkyl chains, however, are often deduced from indirect experimental evidence such as the wettability and the film thickness. In the present study we employed near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) to determine directly the order of the molecules adsorbed from different solvents (water, methanol, water/methanol 1:1, cyclohexanol, and chloroform). It was found that films prepared from different solvents are displaying large differences in the established surface coverage and orientation. In particular, NEXAFS disclosed that the orientation of the alkyl chains can differ significantly even when similar water contact angle values are observed. 相似文献

Gemcitabine (dFdC or Gem) is a water-soluble cytotoxic drug, with poor cellular uptake in the absence of a nucleoside transporter. To improve its diffusion through membranes, it was modified by grafting of a squalenoyl moiety. In water, this derivative is able to form stable and monodispersed nanoparticles made of inverse hexagonal phases. The formation and interfacial properties of the squalenoyl gemcitabine (SQ-Gem) nanoparticles, and their ability to interact with phospholipid and cholesterol monolayers modeling a biomembrane, was assessed from surface tension measurements and Brewster angle microscopy. To get a better insight into the mechanisms of SQ-Gem interaction with the various lipids, the interfacial behavior of SQ-Gem and squalene was also studied by surface pressure and surface potential measurements, in the absence and in the presence of phospholipids and cholesterol. The results showed that SQ-Gem nanoparticles adsorbed at the free air/water interface and disrupted to form a monolayer. SQ-Gem molecules released from the adsorbed nanoparticles were also able to penetrate into condensed phospholipid-cholesterol mixed monolayers. The kinetics of this penetration was apparently controlled by intermolecular interactions between the drug and the adsorbed lipids. Whereas distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) hindered SQ-Gem penetration, cholesterol favored it, which could have important implications in the therapeutic field since cholesterol targeting could alter lipid raft composition and cancer cell survival. 相似文献

We present results from high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and XPS studies of self-assembled monolayers of DNA. The monolayers are well-organized and display sharp vibrational peaks in the HREEL spectra. The electrons interact mainly with the backbone of the DNA. The XPS results indicate that, in most of the samples studied, the phosphates on the DNA are not charged. 相似文献

Vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) was used to investigate the conformational changes in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of (1-mercaptoundec-11-yl) hexa(ethylene glycol) monomethylether (EG6-OMe) on gold when exposed to liquid water. VSFG spectra of the EG6-OMe SAMs were recorded before, during, and after exposure of the films to water and after a subsequent evacuation step. While in contact with water the entire ethylene glycol chains are found in a random, solvated state, after removal from the fluid water molecules remain absorbed only at the terminal groups of the film giving rise to distinct conformational changes. After evacuation, the structure of the EG6-OMe SAM reverts to its original state, indicating that water has been removed from the monolayer. Our findings support recent ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo simulations on the interaction of ethylene glycol-terminated monolayers with water. 相似文献

Four approaches have been explored for the preparation of maleimido-functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on silicon. SAMs prepared by self-assembly of maleimido-functionalized alkyltrichlorosilanes (11-maleimido-undecyl-trichlorosilane) on oxide-covered silicon yield higher signals from maleimido functionalities in ATR-IR (attenuated total reflection IR) spectroscopy and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) than the other three methods. The surface composition of maleimido groups was tailored further by the formation of mixed monolayers with nonfunctionalized alkyltrichlorosilanes (decyltrichlorosilane). The order of the alkyl chains within the monolayers only slightly depends on the composition of the mixed monolayers. We utilized the maleimido-terminated SAMs to bind various nucleophilic compounds, alkylamines, alkylthiols, and thiol-tagged DNA oligonucleotides by means of conjugate addition. 相似文献

In this communication, we demonstrate that chiral self-assembled monolayers can be used for polymorphism control of chiral crystals. We studied the crystallization of DL-glutamic acid on chiral self-assembled monolayers and showed that crystallization of DL-glutamic acid on the chiral SAMs resulted in stabilization of the metastable conglomerate form. 相似文献

Electrokinetic properties of α-Fe(2)O(3) (hematite) nanoparticle monolayers on mica were thoroughly characterized using the streaming potential method. Hematite suspensions were obtained by acidic hydrolysis of ferric chloride. The average size of particles (hydrodynamic diameter), determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and AFM, was 22nm (pH=5.5, I=10(-2)M). The hematite monolayers on mica were produced under diffusion-controlled transport from the suspensions of various bulk concentration. The monolayer coverage, quantitatively determined by AFM and SEM, was regulated within broad limits by adjusting the nanoparticle deposition time. This allowed one to uniquely express zeta potential of hematite monolayers, determined by the streaming potential measurements, in terms of the particle coverage. Such dependencies, obtained for various pH, were successfully interpreted in terms of the three-dimensional electrokinetic model. A universal calibrating graph was produced enabling one to determine hematite monolayer coverage from the measured value of the streaming potential. The influence of the ionic strength, varied between 10(-4) and 10(-2)M, on the zeta potential of hematite monolayers was also studied. Additionally, the stability of monolayers (desorption kinetics) was determined under in situ conditions using the streaming potential method. Our experimental data prove that it is feasible to produce uniform and stable hematite particle monolayers of well-controlled coverage. Such monolayers may find practical applications as universal substrates for protein immobilization (biosensors) and in electrocatalytic applications. 相似文献

It is argued, on the basis of density functional calculations, that a self-assembled monolayer of oligo(ethylene glycol) or n-alkanes in contact with water will preferentially adsorb hydroxyl ions (either from autoionization of water or added to the solution) on both methoxy- and hydroxide-terminated endgroups, thus charging the surface region of the SAM negatively with an estimated charge density of about 1 microC/cm(2) in agreement with recent experiments. The negative charging can explain long-ranged forces between opposing SAM surfaces. On dense SAMs, hydroxyl ions are highly mobile. Hydronium ions can absorb by penetration into the SAM provided there is enough lateral space for their encapsulation. The important role of hydration is demonstrated by calculating the excess binding energy of adsorption using a Born-Haber cycle. 相似文献

Substrates of aluminum (Al) deposited by physical vapor deposition onto Si substrates and then chemically reacted with perfluorodecylphosphonic acid (PFDPAlSi), decylphosphonic acid (DPAlSi), and octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPAlSi) were studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and friction force microscopy, a derivative of AFM, to characterize their surface chemical composition, roughness, and micro-/nanotribological properties. XPS analysis confirmed the presence of perfluorinated and nonperfluorinated alkylphosphonate molecules on the PFDPAlSi, DPAlSi, and ODPAlSi. The sessile drop static contact angle of pure water on PFDPAlSi was typically more than 130 degrees and on DPAlSi and ODPAlSi typically more than 125 degrees indicating that all phosphonic acid reacted AlSi samples were very hydrophobic. The surface roughness for PFDPAlSi, DPAlSi, ODPAlSi, and bare AlSi was approximately 35 nm as determined by AFM. The surface energy for PFDPAlSi was determined to be approximately 11 mNm by the Zisman plot method compared to 21 and 20 mNm for DPAlSi and ODPAlSi, respectively. Tribology involves the measure of lateral forces due to friction and adhesion between two surfaces. Friction, adhesion, and wear play important roles in the performance of micro-/nanoelectromechanical systems. PFDPAlSi gave the lowest adhesion and coefficient of friction values while bare AlSi gave the highest. The adhesion and coefficient of friction values for DPAlSi and ODPAlSi were comparable. 相似文献

Cobalt and its alloys are used in a broad range of application fields. However, the use of this metal is especially limited by its strongly oxidizable nature. The use of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is a very efficient way to protect against such oxidation and/or to inhibit corrosion. This surface modification method has been particularly applied to oxidizable metals such as copper or nickel, yet the modification of cobalt surfaces by alkanethiol SAMs received limited attention up to now. In this work, we study the influence of parameters by which to control the self-assembly process of 1-dodecanethiol monolayers on cobalt: nature of the surface pretreatment, solvent, immersion time, and concentration. Each of these parameters has been optimized to obtain a densely packed and stable monolayer able to efficiently prevent the reoxidation of the modified cobalt substrates. The obtained monolayers were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The stability of the optimized 1-dodecanethiol monolayer upon air exposure for 28 days has been confirmed by XPS. 相似文献

In the present study, oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG)-linked alkanethiols were synthesized which carry a vicinal diol on one end of the OEG chain. After self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation on gold, the vicinal diols were converted into aldehyde functions by exposure to aqueous NaIO4, as previously used for SAMs with OEG chains buried in the center of the SAM [Jang et al. Nano Lett. 2003, 3, 691-694]. Mixed SAMs with latent aldehydes on 5% of the OEG termini showed high protein resistance, which greatly slowed the kinetics of protein coupling on the time scale of minutes. Small bioligands (such as biocytin hydrazide) or small heterobifunctional crosslinkers (maleimidopropionyl hydrazide, pyridyldithiopropionyl hydrazide) with hydrazide functions were efficiently bound to the aldehyde functions on the SAM, providing for specific capture of streptavidin or for fast covalent binding of proteins with free thiols or maleimide functions, respectively. In conclusion, OEG-terminated SAMs with latent aldehydes serve as protein-resistant sensor surfaces which are easily functionalized with small ligands or with heterobifunctional crosslinkers to which the bait molecule is attached in a subsequent step. 相似文献

4,4'-Dithiodipyridine (PySSPy) monolayers on Au(111) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The studies were performed in solutions of different anions and pHs (0.1 M H2SO4, 0.1 M HClO4, 0.1 and 0.01 M Na2SO4, 0.1 and 0.01 M NaOH). The cyclic current-potential curves in H2SO4 show current peaks at about 0.4 V, which are absent for all other electrolytes at this potential. The XPS data suggest that PySSPy adsorbs via the S endgroup on the gold surface and the S-S bond breaks during adsorption. From the chemical shift of the N(ls) peak, it is concluded that in acidic media the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is fully protonated, whereas in basic solution it is not. The pKa is estimated to be 5.3. STM studies reveal the existence of highly ordered superstructures for the SAM. In Na2SO4 and H2SO4, a (7 x mean square root of 3) structure is proposed. However, whereas in Na2SO4 solutions the superstructure does not change with potential, in 0.1 M H2SO4 the superstructure is observed only negative of the current peak at +0.4 V. At more positive potentials, the film becomes disordered. The results are compared to those for 4-mercaptopyridine (PyS) SAMs. XPS experiments and current-potential curves indicate that both molecules adsorb in the same manner on Au(111), that is, even in the case of PySSPy the adspecies is PyS. The STM results, however, call for a more subtle interpretation. While in Na2SO4 solutions the observed superstructures are the same for both SAMs, markedly different structures are found for PySSPy and PyS SAMs in 0.1 M H2SO4. 相似文献

Redox-active self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) provide an excellent platform for investigating electron transfer kinetics. Using a well-defined bridge, a redox center can be positioned at a fixed distance from the electrode and electron transfer kinetics probed using a variety of electrochemical techniques. Cyclic voltammetry, AC voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometry are most commonly used to determine the rate of electron transfer of redox-activated SAMs. A variety of redox species have been attached to SAMs, and include transition metal complexes (e.g., ferrocene, ruthenium pentaammine, osmium bisbipyridine, metal clusters) and organic molecules (e.g., galvinol, C60). SAMs offer an ideal environment to study the outer-sphere interactions of redox species. The composition and integrity of the monolayer and the electrode material influence the electron transfer kinetics and can be investigated using electrochemical methods. Theoretical models have been developed for investigating SAM structure. This review discusses methods and monolayer compositions for electrochemical measurements of redox-active SAMs. 相似文献
