Control and Stabilization Properties for a Singular Heat Equation with an Inverse-Square Potential

The goal of this article is to analyze control properties of parabolic equations with a singular potential ? μ/|x|², where μ is a real number. When μ ≤ (N ? 2)²/4, it was proved in [19 Vancostenoble , J. , Zuazua , E. ( 2008 ). Null controllability for the heat equation with singular inverse-square potentials . J. Funct. Anal. 254 : 1864 – 1902 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]] that the equation can be controlled to zero with a distributed control which surrounds the singularity. In the present work, using Carleman estimates, we will prove that this assumption is not necessary, and that we can control the equation from any open subset as for the heat equation. Then we will study the case μ > (N ? 2)²/4, and prove that the situation changes completely: indeed, we will consider a sequence of regularized potentials μ/(|x|² + ?²), and prove that we cannot stabilize the corresponding systems uniformly with respect to ? > 0, due to the presence of explosive modes which concentrate around the singularity.

A Note on the Singular Limit of the Exact Controllability of Dissipative Wave Equations

Abstract In this note we analyze the exact controllability of singularly perturbed damped wave equations under more general geometric control condition than that of [1]. We show that the null controllability of the heat equation can be obtained as a singular limit of the exact controllability of such sorts of wave equations. Global Carleman Estimates for Waves and Applications

In this article, we extensively develop Carleman estimates for the wave equation and give some applications. We focus on the case of an observation of the flux on a part of the boundary satisfying the Gamma conditions of Lions. We will then consider two applications. The first one deals with the exact controllability problem for the wave equation with potential. Following the duality method proposed by Fursikov and Imanuvilov in the context of parabolic equations, we propose a constructive method to derive controls that weakly depend on the potentials. The second application concerns an inverse problem for the waves that consists in recovering an unknown time-independent potential from a single measurement of the flux. In that context, our approach does not yield any new stability result, but proposes a constructive algorithm to rebuild the potential. In both cases, the main idea is to introduce weighted functionals that contain the Carleman weights and then to take advantage of the freedom on the Carleman parameters to limit the influences of the potentials.     

Carleman Estimates for Parabolic Equations with Nonhomogeneous Boundary Conditions

The authors prove a new Carleman estimate for general linear second order parabolic equation with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. On the basis of this estimate, improved Carleman estimates for the Stokes system and for a system of parabolic equations with a penalty term are obtained. This system can be viewed as an approximation of the Stokes system.

Null Controllability in a Heat–Solid Structure Model

A model representing a coupling between a heat conducting medium and a solid structure is considered. We establish a Carleman inequality for this model. Next we deduce a null controllability result with an internal control in the conducting medium and there is no control in the solid part.     

Harnack Estimates for Weak Solutions to a Singular Parabolic Equation

By an interpolation method, an intrinsic Harnack estimate and some supestimates are established for nonnegative solutions to a general singular parabolic equation.     

Some controllability results for the 2D Kolmogorov equation

In this article, we prove the null controllability of the 2D Kolmogorov equation both in the whole space and in the square. The control is a source term in the right-hand side of the equation, located on a subdomain, that acts linearly on the state. In the first case, it is the complementary of a strip with axis x and in the second one, it is a strip with axis x.The proof relies on two ingredients. The first one is an explicit decay rate for the Fourier components of the solution in the free system. The second one is an explicit bound for the cost of the null controllability of the heat equation with potential that the Fourier components solve. This bound is derived by means of a new Carleman inequality.

Some properties of the singular integral operator G(⋅) and the solvability of Cauchy problem for the singular integral-differential equations (1.1) and (1.2) of finite-depth fluids are studied.     

Local Estimates of Singular Solution to Gaussian Curvature Equation

In this paper, we derive the local estimates of a singular solution near its singular set Z of the Gaussian curvature equation Δu(x) + K(x)e^{u(x)} = 0 in Ω \ Z, in the case that K(x) may be zero on Z, where Ω ⊂ R² is a bounded open domain, and Z is a set of finite points.     

Some Simple Estimates for the Singular Values of Matrices

Abstract We first provide a simple estimate for ||A~(-1)||_∞ and ||A~(-1)||_1 of a strictly diagonally dominant matrixA. On the Basis of the result, we obtain an estimate for the smallest singular value of A. Secondly, by scalingwith a positive diagonal matrix D, we obtain some simple estimates for the smallest singular value of an H-matrix, which is not necessarily positive definite. Finally, we give some examples to show the effectiveness ofthe new bounds.

Necessary Condition for a Strong Relative Minimum for Singular Optimal Control

A necessary condition is developed for a strong relative minimum for a first-order singular optimal control. It is shown that the strong condition is identical with the existing weak condition, namely, the generalized Legendre-Clebsch condition. It is conjectured that the strong condition for a second-order singular control will be the same as the corresponding weak condition.
