This is a study of singular solutions of the problem of traveling gravity water waves on flows with vorticity. We show that, for a certain class of vorticity functions, a sequence of regular waves converges to an extreme wave with stagnation points at its crests. We also show that, for any vorticity function, the profile of an extreme wave must have either a corner of 120° or a horizontal tangent at any stagnation point about which it is supposed symmetric. Moreover, the profile necessarily has a corner of 120° if the vorticity is nonnegative near the free surface.  相似文献

We continue the study of minimal singular surfaces obtained by a minimization of a weighted energy functional in the spirit of J. Douglas’s approach to the Plateau problem. Modeling soap films spanning wire frames, a singular surface is the union of three disk-type surfaces meeting along a curve which we call the free boundary. We obtain an a priori regularity result concerning the real analyticity of the free boundary curve. Using the free boundary regularity of the harmonic map, we construct local harmonic isothermal coordinates for the minimal singular surface in a neighborhood of a point on the free boundary. Applications of the local uniformization are discussed in relation to H. Lewy’s real analytic extension of minimal surfaces.  相似文献

We study two-dimensional stationary and nonstationary boundary value problems of fluid filtration in an anisotropic inhomogeneous porous layer whose conductivity is modeled by a not necessarily symmetric tensor. For the velocity field, we introduce generalized singular Cauchy and Cauchy type integrals whose kernels are expressed via the leading solutions of the main equations and have a hydrodynamic interpretation. We obtain the limit values of a Cauchy type generalized integral (Sokhotskii-Plemelj generalized formulas). This permits one to develop a method for solving boundary value problems for the filtration velocity field. The idea of the method and its efficiency are illustrated for the boundary value problem of filtration in adjacent layers of distinct conductivities and the problem of the evolution of liquid interface.  相似文献

In the presented work, we study the regularity of solutions to the generalized Navier-Stokes problem up to a C 2 boundary in dimensions two and three. The point of our generalization is an assumption that a deviatoric part of a stress tensor depends on a shear rate and on a pressure. We focus on estimates of the Hausdorff measure of a singular set which is defined as a complement of a set where a solution is Hölder continuous. We use so-called indirect approach to show partial regularity, for dimension 2 we get even an empty set of singular points.  相似文献

The dynamics of a (nonlinear) Berger plate in the absence of rotational inertia are considered with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. In our analysis, we consider boundary damping in two scenarios: (i) free plate boundary conditions, or (ii) hinged-type boundary conditions. In either situation, the nonlinearity gives rise to complicating boundary terms. In the case of free boundary conditions we show that well-posedness of finite-energy solutions can be obtained via highly nonlinear boundary dissipation. Additionally, we show the existence of a compact global attractor for the dynamics in the presence of hinged-type boundary dissipation (assuming a geometric condition on the entire boundary (Lagnese, 1989)). To obtain the existence of the attractor we explicitly construct the absorbing set for the dynamics by employing energy methods that: (i) exploit the structure of the Berger nonlinearity, and (ii) utilize sharp trace results for the Euler–Bernoulli plate in Lasiecka and Triggiani (1993).We provide a parallel commentary (from a mathematical point of view) to the discussion of modeling with Berger versus von Karman nonlinearities: to wit, we describe the derivation of each nonlinear dynamics and a discussion of the validity of the Berger approximation. We believe this discussion to be of broad value across engineering and applied mathematics communities.  相似文献

In the present work, the tensionless contact problem of an Euler–Bernoulli beam of finite length resting on a two-parameter Pasternak-type foundation is investigated. Owing to the tensionless character of the contact, the beam may lift-off the foundation and the point where contact ceases and detachment begins, named contact locus, needs be assessed. In this situation, a one-dimensional free boundary problem is dealt with. An extra condition, in the form of a homogeneous second-order equation in the displacement and its derivatives, is demanded to set the contact locus and it gives the problem its nonlinear feature. Conversely, the loading and the beam length may be such that the beam rests entirely supported on the foundation, which situation is governed by a classical linear boundary value problem. In this work, contact evolution is discussed for a continuously varying loading condition, starting from a symmetric layout and at a given beam length, until overturning is eventually reached. In particular, stability is numerically assessed through the energy criterion, which is shown to stand for the free boundary situation as well. At overturning, a descending pathway in the system energy appears and stability loss is confirmed.  相似文献

Using a fixed point theorem due to M.A. Krasnosel'skii, the upper-lower solutions method and fixed point index theory, we study existence, non-existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for a class of systems of second-order ordinary differential equations. We give a new notion of superlinearity for nonlinearities. Observe that the nonlinearities may even be, in some sense, singular. As an application, we show multiplicity results for a class of semilinear elliptic systems in both bounded annular domains and exterior domains. In addition, we apply our results to fourth-order boundary value problems.  相似文献

The Bernoulli boundary condition for traveling water waves is obtained from Euler’s equation for inviscid flow by employing two key reductions: (i) the traveling wave assumption, (ii) the introduction of a velocity potential. Depending on the order of these reductions, the Bernoulli boundary condition may or may not contain an arbitrary constant. This note shows the equivalence of the two formulations. Further, we arrive at a physical interpretation for the Bernoulli constant, namely, that it is associated with an average current. Last, we show that the Bernoulli constant and the average current cannot simultaneously be zero for non-trivial traveling waves.  相似文献

We consider the main boundary value problems of two-dimensional stationary flows in an anisotropic-inhomogeneous layer with an arbitrary (not necessarily symmetric) permeability tensor. We present Cauchy integrals and Cauchy type integrals whose kernels can be expressed via the fundamental solutions of the main equations and have a hydrodynamic meaning. This permits one to develop the method of singular integral equations for solving two-dimensional boundary value problems. The considered problems can be used as mathematical models, in particular, for the extraction of fluids (water, oil) from natural layers of soil with complicated geological structure.  相似文献

We consider solving large sparse symmetric singular linear systems. We first introduce an algorithm for right preconditioned minimum residual (MINRES) and prove that its iterates converge to the preconditioner weighted least squares solution without breakdown for an arbitrary right‐hand‐side vector and an arbitrary initial vector even if the linear system is singular and inconsistent. For the special case when the system is consistent, we prove that the iterates converge to a min‐norm solution with respect to the preconditioner if the initial vector is in the range space of the right preconditioned coefficient matrix. Furthermore, we propose a right preconditioned MINRES using symmetric successive over‐relaxation (SSOR) with Eisenstat's trick. Some numerical experiments on semidefinite systems in electromagnetic analysis and so forth indicate that the method is efficient and robust. Finally, we show that the residual norm can be further reduced by restarting the iterations.  相似文献

We consider the bifurcation of singular points near a double fold point in Z2 -symmetric nonlinear equations with two parameters,where the linearization has a two dimensional null space spanned by a symmetric null vector and an ami-symmetric null vector. In particular, we show the existence of a turning point path and a pitchfork point path passing ihrough the double fold point and they are the only singular points nearby. Their nondegeneracy is confirmed. A supporting numerical example is also provided. The main tools for our analysis as well as the compulation are some extended systems.  相似文献

In this work we present a singular function boundary integral method for elliptic problems with boundary singularities. In this method, the approximation is constructed from the truncated asymptotic expansion for the solution near the singular point and the Dirichlet boundary conditions are weakly enforced by means of Lagrange multiplier functions. The resulting discrete problem is posed and solved on the boundary of the domain, away from the point of singularity. We are able to show that the method approximates the generalized stress intensity factors, i.e. the coe cients in the asymptotic expansion, at an exponential rate. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this paper, we consider some singular formally symmetric (self-adjoint) boundary value problems generated by a singular third-order differential expression and separated and coupled boundary conditions. In particular, we consider that the minimal symmetric operator generated by the third-order differential expression has the deficiency indices (3,3). We study the long time existence theory for a non local flow associated to a free boundary problem for a trapped non liquid drop. The drop has free boundary components on two horizontal plates and its free energy is anisotropic and axially symmetric. For axially symmetric initial surfaces with sufficiently large volume in comparison with their initial surface energy, we show that the flow exists for all time. Numerical simulations of the curvature flow are presented.  相似文献

We study a singular perturbation problem for a nonlocal evolution operator. The problem appears in the analysis of the propagation of flames in the high activation energy limit, when admitting nonlocal effects.

We obtain uniform estimates and we show that, under suitable assumptions, limits are solutions to a free boundary problem in a viscosity sense and in a pointwise sense at regular free boundary points.

We study the nonlocal problem both for a single equation and for a system of two equations.

Some of the results obtained are new even when the operator under consideration is the heat operator.  相似文献

Given a bounded domain Ω we look at the minimal parameter Λ(Ω) for which a Bernoulli free boundary value problem for the p-Laplacian has a solution minimising an energy functional. We show that amongst all domains of equal volume Λ(Ω) is minimal for the ball. Moreover, we show that the inequality is sharp with essentially only the ball minimising Λ(Ω). This resolves a problem related to a question asked in Flucher et al. (Reine Angew Math 486:165–204, 1997).  相似文献
