Global Hypoellipticity and Simultaneous Approximability

A necessary and sufficient condition is given for a sum of squares operator to be globally hypoelliptic on an N-dimensional torus. This condition is expressed in terms of Diophantine approximation properties of the coefficients. The proof of the Theorem is based on L²-estimates and microlocalization.

Analytic regularity for an operator with Treves curves

We study a partial differential operator with analytic coefficients, which is of the form “sum of squares”. is hypoelliptic on any open subset of , yet possesses the following properties: (1) is not analytic hypoelliptic on any open subset of that contains 0. (2) If u is any distribution defined near with the property that is analytic near 0, then u must be analytic near 0. (3) The point 0 lies on the projection of an infinite number of Treves curves (bicharacteristics).These results are consistent with the Treves conjectures. However, it follows that the analog of Treves conjecture, in the sense of germs, is false.As far as we know, is the first example of a “sum of squares” operator which is not analytic hypoelliptic in the usual sense, yet is analytic hypoelliptic in the sense of germs.     

Degenerate Second Order Differential Operators Generating Analytic Semigroups in Lp and W1,p

We deal with the problem of analyticity for the semigroup generated by the second order differential operator Au ≔ αu″ + βu′ (or by some restrictions of it) in the spaces L^p(0, 1), with or without weight, and in W^1,p(0, 1), 1 < p < ∞. Here α and β are assumed real‐valued and continuous in [0, 1], with α(x) > 0 in (0, 1), and the domain of A is determined by the generalized Neumann boundary conditions and by Wentzell boundary conditions.     

Pseudo-Differential Operators in Algebras of Generalized Functions and Global Hypoellipticity

The aim of this work is to develop a global calculus for pseudo-differential operators acting on suitable algebras of generalized functions. In particular, a condition of global hypoellipticity of the symbols gives a result of regularity for the corresponding pseudo-differential equations. This calculus and this frame are proposed as tools for the study in Colombeau algebras of partial differential equations globally defined on R ⁿ .

Two approximation schemes of the continued transform (one based on a Taylor series truncation, the other on a global eigenfunction expansion) are also discussed.

A Class of FBI Transforms

We introduce a class of FBI transforms whose phase functions may have a degenerate Hessian and present an application of these transforms to the microlocal analytic hypoellipticity of certain systems of vector fields.     

Analytic hypoellipticity for sums of squares and the Treves conjecture

We are concerned with the problem of real analytic regularity of the solutions of sums of squares with real analytic coefficients. Treves conjecture states that an operator of this type is analytic hypoelliptic if and only if all the strata in the Poisson–Treves stratification are symplectic.We produce a model operator, $P_1$, having a single symplectic stratum and prove that it is Gevrey $s_0$ hypoelliptic and not better. See Theorem 2.1 for a definition of $s_0$. We also show that this phenomenon has a microlocal character.We point out explicitly that this is a counterexample to the sufficient part of Treves conjecture and not to the necessary part, which is still an open problem.
