This work chooses Cu/Fe single-atom catalysts(SACs) with weak/strong oxygen affinity to clarify the effect of dual-atom configuration on oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) performance based on density functional theory(DFT) calculations. The stability and ORR activity of single or dual Cu/Fe atomic sites anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene sheets(Cu-N4-C, Cu2-N6-C, Fe-N4-C, and Fe2-N6-C) are investigated, and the results indicate the dual-atom catalysts(Cu2-N6-C and Fe2-N6-C) are thermodynamically stable enough to avoid sintering and aggregation. Compared with single-atom active sites of Cu-N4-C, which show weak oxygen affinity and poor ORR performance with a limiting potential of 0.58 V, the dual-Cu active sites of Cu2-N6-C exhibit enhanced ORR activity with a limiting potential up to 0.87 V due to strengthened oxygen affinity. Interestingly, for Fe SACs with strong oxygen affinity, the DFT results show that the dual-Fe sites stabilize the two OH* ligands structure[Fe2(OH)2-N6-C], which act as the active sites during ORR process, resulting in greatly improved ORR performance with a limiting potential of 0.90 V. This study suggests that the dual-atom design is a potential strategy to improve the ORR performance of SACs, in which the activity of the single atom active sites is limited with weak or strong oxygen affinity.  相似文献

Metal-containing nanoparticles (M-NPs) in metal/nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts have been considered hostile to the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The relation between M-NPs and the active sites of metal coordinated with nitrogen (MNx) is hard to establish in acid medium owing to the poor stability of M-NPs. Herein, we develop a strategy to successfully construct a new FeCo-N-C catalyst containing highly active M-NPs and MN4 composite sites (M/FeCo-SAs-N-C). Enhanced catalytic activity and stability of M/FeCo-SAs-N-C is shown experimentally. Calculations reveal that there is a strong interaction between M-NPs and FeN4 sites, which can favor ORR by activating the O−O bond, thus facilitating a direct 4 e process. Those findings firstly shed light on the highly active M-NPs and FeN4 composite sites for catalyzing acid oxygen reduction reaction, and the relevant reaction mechanism is suggested.  相似文献

Iron-nitrogen-carbon materials have been known as the most promising non-noble metal catalyst for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), but the genuine active sites for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are still arguable. Herein, by the thorough density functional theory investigations, we unravel that the planar Fe2N6 site exhibits excellent ORR catalytic activity over both FeN3 and FeN4 sites, and the potential-determining step is determined to be the *OH hydrogenation step with an overpotential of 0.415 V. The ORR activity of Fe2N6 site originates from the low spin magnetic moment (1.11 μB), which leads to high antibonding states and low d-band center of the Fe center, further leads to weak binding strength of *OH species. The density of FeN4 sites only has little influence on the ORR activity owing to the similar interaction between active site and intermediates in ORR. Our research sheds light on the activity origin of iron-nitrogen-carbon materials for ORR.  相似文献

Catalysts with metal-Nx sites have long been considered as effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the accurate structure-property correlations of these active sites remain debatable. Report here is a proof-of-concept method to construct 1,4,8,11-tetraaza[14]annulene (TAA)-based polymer nanocomposites with well-managed electronic microenvironment via electron-donors/acceptors interaction of altering electron-withdrawing β-site substituents. DFT calculation proves the optimal −Cl substituted catalyst (CoTAA−Cl@GR) tailored the key OH* intermediate interaction with Co−N4 sites under the d-orbital regulation, hence reaching the top of ORR performance with excellent turnover frequency (0.49 e s−1 site−1). The combination of in situ scanning electrochemical microscopy and variable-frequency square wave voltammetry techniques contribute the great ORR kinetics of CoTAA−Cl@GR to the relatively high accessible site density (7.71×1019 site g−1) and fast electron outbound propagation mechanism. This work provides theoretical guidance for rational design of high-performance catalysts for ORR and beyond.  相似文献

It remains challenging to rationally synthesize iron/nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe/N-C) catalysts with rich Fe−Nx atomic active sites for improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis. A highly efficient Fe/N-C catalyst, which has been synthesized through a spatial isolation strategy, is reported. Derived from bioinspired polydopamine (PDA)-based hybrid microsphere precursors, it is a multifunctional carrier that loads atomically dispersed Fe3+/Zn2+ ions through coordination interactions and N-rich melamine through electrostatic attraction and covalent bonding. The Zn2+ ions and melamine in the precursor efficiently isolate Fe3+ atoms upon pyrolysis to form rich Fe−Nx atomic active sites, and generate abundant micropores during high-temperature treatment; as a consequence, the resultant Fe-N/C catalyst contains rich catalytically active Fe−Nx sites and a hierarchical porous structure. The catalyst exhibits improved ORR activity that is superior to and close to that of Pt/C in alkaline and acidic solutions, respectively.  相似文献

Successful design of reversible oxygen electrocatalysts does not only require to consider their activity towards the oxygen reduction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reactions (OER), but also their electrochemical stability at alternating ORR and OER operating conditions, which is important for potential applications in reversible electrolyzers/fuel cells or metal/air batteries. We show that the combination of catalyst materials containing stable ORR active sites with those containing stable OER active sites may result in a stable ORR/OER catalyst if each of the active components can satisfy the current demand of their respective reaction. We compare the ORR/OER performances of oxides of Mn (stable ORR active sites), Fe (stable OER active sites), and bimetallic Mn0.5Fe0.5 (reversible ORR/OER catalyst) supported on oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Despite the instability of Mn and Fe oxide for the OER and the ORR, respectively, Mn0.5Fe0.5 exhibits high stability for both reactions.

Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been intensively studied for environmentally benign applications. However, insufficient understanding of ORR 2 e-pathway mechanism at the atomic level inhibits rational design of catalysts with both high activity and selectivity, causing concerns including catalyst degradation due to Fenton reaction or poor efficiency of H2O2 electrosynthesis. Herein we show that the generally accepted ORR electrocatalyst design based on a Sabatier volcano plot argument optimises activity but is unable to account for the 2 e-pathway selectivity. Through electrochemical and operando spectroscopic studies on a series of CoNx/carbon nanotube hybrids, a construction-driven approach based on an extended “dynamic active site saturation” model that aims to create the maximum number of 2 e ORR sites by directing the secondary ORR electron transfer towards the 2 e intermediate is proven to be attainable by manipulating O2 hydrogenation kinetics.  相似文献

In the present work, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is explored in an acidic medium with two different catalytic supports (multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nitrogen-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NMWCNTs)) and two different catalysts (copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and sulfonic acid functionalized CuPc (CuPc-SO3)). The composite, NMWCNTs-CuPc-SO3 exhibits high ORR activity (assessed based on the onset potential (0.57 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and Tafel slope) in comparison to the other composites. Rotating ring disc electrode (RRDE) studies demonstrate a highly selective four-electron ORR (less than 2.5 % H2O2 formation) at the NMWCNTs-CuPc-SO3. The synergistic effect of the catalyst support (NMWCNTs) and sulfonic acid functionalization of the catalyst (in CuPc-SO3) increase the efficiency and selectivity of the ORR at the NMWCNTs-CuPc-SO3. The catalyst activity of NMWCNTs-CuPc-SO3 has been compared with many reported materials and found to be better than several catalysts. NMWCNTs-CuPc-SO3 shows high tolerance for methanol and very small deviation in the onset potential (10 mV) between the linear sweep voltammetry responses recorded before and after 3000 cyclic voltammetry cycles, demonstrating exceptional durability. The high durability is attributed to the stabilization of CuPc-SO3 by the additional coordination with nitrogen (Cu-Nx) present on the surface of NMWCNTs.  相似文献

Transition-metal selenides are emerging as alternative bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR); however, their activity and stability are still less than desirable. Herein, ultrafine Co0.85Se nanoparticles encapsulated into carbon nanofibers (CNFs), Co0.85Se@CNFs, is reported as an integrated bifunctional catalyst for OER and ORR. This catalyst exhibits a low OER potential of 1.58 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) (EJ=10, OER) to achieve a current density (J) of 10 mA cm−2 and a high ORR potential of 0.84 V vs. RHE (EJ=−1, ORR) to reach −1 mA cm−2. Thus, the potential between EJ=10, OER and EJ=−1, ORR is only 0.74 V, indicating considerable bifunctional activity. The excellent bifunctionality can be attributed to high electronic conduction, abundant electrochemically active sites, and the synergistic effect of Co0.85Se and CNFs. Furthermore, this Co0.85Se@CNFs catalyst displays good cycling stability for both OER and ORR. This study paves a new way for the rational design of hybrid catalysts composed of transition-metal selenides and carbon materials for efficiently catalyzing OER and ORR.  相似文献

Inspired by copper‐based oxygen reduction biocatalysts, we have studied the electrocatalytic behavior of a Cu‐based MOF (Cu‐BTT) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline medium. This catalyst reduces the oxygen at the onset (Eonset) and half‐wave potential (E1/2) of 0. 940 V and 0.778 V, respectively. The high halfway potential supports the good activity of Cu‐BTT MOF. The high ORR catalytic activity can be interpreted by the presence of nitrogen‐rich ligand (tetrazole) and the generation of nascent copper(I) during the reaction. In addition to the excellent activity, Cu‐BTT MOF showed exceptional stability too, which was confirmed through chronoamperometry study, where current was unchanged up to 12 h. Further, the 4‐electrons transfer of ORR kinetics was confirmed by hydrodynamic voltammetry. The oxygen active center namely copper(I) generation during ORR has been understood by the reduction peak in cyclic voltammetry as well in the XPS analysis.  相似文献

Dual-atom catalysts (DAC) are deemed as promising electrocatalysts due to the abundant active sites and adjustable electronic structure, but the fabrication of well-defined DAC is still full of challenges. Herein, bonded Fe dual-atom catalysts (Fe2DAC) with Fe2N6C8O2 configuration were developed through one-step carbonization of a preorganized covalent organic framework with bimetallic Fe chelation sites (Fe2COF). The transition from Fe2COF to Fe2DAC involved the dissociation of the nanoparticles and the capture of atoms by carbon defects. Benefitting from the optimized d-band center and enhanced adsorption of OOH* intermediates, Fe2DAC exhibited outstanding oxygen reduction activity with a half-wave potential of 0.898 V vs. RHE. This work will guide more fabrication of dual-atom and even cluster catalysts from preorganized COF in the future.  相似文献

Establishing generic catalyst design principles by identifying structural features of materials that influence their performance will advance the rational engineering of new catalytic materials. In this study, by investigating metal-substituted manganese oxide (spinel) nanoparticles, Mn3O4:M (M=Sr, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu), we rationalize the dependence of the activity of Mn3O4:M for the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the enthalpy of formation of the binary MO oxide, ΔfH°(MO), and the Lewis acidity of the M2+ substituent. Incorporation of elements M with low ΔfH°(MO) enhances the oxygen binding strength in Mn3O4:M, which affects its activity in ORR due to the established correlation between ORR activity and the binding energy of *O/*OH/*OOH species. Our work provides a perspective on the design of new compositions for oxygen electrocatalysis relying on the rational substitution/doping by redox-inactive elements.  相似文献

For the FeNC catalyst widely used in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), its instability under fuel cell (FC) operating conditions has become the biggest obstacle during its practical application. The complexity of the degradation process of the FeNC catalyst in FCs poses a huge challenge when it comes to revealing the underlying degradation mechanism that directly leads to the decay in ORR activity. Herein, using density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) approaches and the FeN4 moiety as an active site, we find that during catalyzing the ORR, Fe site oxidation in the form of *Fe(OH)2, in which 2OH* species are adsorbed on Fe on the same side of the FeN4 plane, results in the successive protonation of N and then permanent damage to the FeN4 moiety, which causes the leaching of the Fe site in the form of Fe(OH)2 species and a sharp irreversible decline in the ORR activity. However, other types of OH* adsorption on Fe in the form of HO*FeOH and *FeOH intermediates cannot cause the protonation of N or any breaking of Fe–N bonds in the FeN4 moiety, only inducing the blocking of the Fe site. Meanwhile, based on the competitive relationship between catalyzing the ORR and Fe site oxidation, we propose a trade-off potential (URHETMOR) to describe the anti-oxidation abilities of the TM site in the TMNX moiety during the ORR.

We summarize possible catalyst degradation mechanisms during the ORR. Protonation on an N atom of bare FeNC catalysts is difficult, leaching of the Fe site is also likely to happen, due to successive N protonation that destroys the FeN4 moiety releasing Fe(OH)2 species.  相似文献

Atomic metal catalysis (AMC) provides an effective way to enhance activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Cobalt anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon materials have been extensively reported. The carbon-hosted Co-N4 structure was widely considered as the active site; however, it is very rare to investigate the activity of Co partially coordinated with N, for example, Co-N4−xCx. Herein, the activity of Co-N4−xCx with tunable coordination environment is investigated as the active sites for ORR catalysis. The defect (di-vacancies) on carbon is essential for the formation of Co-N4−xCx. N species play two important roles in promoting the intrinsic activity of atomic metal catalyst: N coordinated with Co to manipulate the reactivity by modification of electronic distribution and N helped to trap more Co to increase the number of active sites.  相似文献

Designing highly efficient and stable electrode-electrolyte interface for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electrosynthesis remains challenging. Inhibiting the competitive side reaction, 4 e oxygen reduction to H2O, is essential for highly selective H2O2 electrosynthesis. Instead of hindering excessive hydrogenation of H2O2 via catalyst modification, we discover that adding a hydrogen-bond acceptor, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), to the KOH electrolyte enables simultaneous improvement of the selectivity and activity of H2O2 electrosynthesis. Spectral characterization and molecular simulation confirm that the formation of hydrogen bonds between DMSO and water molecules at the electrode-electrolyte interface can reduce the activity of water dissociation into active H* species. The suitable H* supply environment hinders excessive hydrogenation of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), thus improving the selectivity of 2 e ORR and achieving over 90 % selectivity of H2O2. This work highlights the importance of regulating the interfacial hydrogen-bond environment by organic molecules as a means of boosting electrochemical performance in aqueous electrosynthesis and beyond.  相似文献

Nitrogen-doped carbons (N/Cs) manifest good catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cell systems. However, to date, controversies remain on the role of active sites in N/Cs. In the present study, ORR test was conducted on three N/Cs in O2-saturated 0.1 M KOH aqueous solution, where apparent linear correlation between graphitic N contents and ORR activity was observed. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that graphitic N doping is energetically more favorable than that of pyridinic N doping for ORR and the pyridinic N leads to more preferential with 2 e ORR pathway. These results reveal that graphitic N plays a key role in N/Cs mediated ORR activity. This work lays a solid foundation on identifying the active sites in heteroatom-doped carbons and can be exploited for rational design and engineering of effective carbon-based ORR catalysts.  相似文献

The high charge–discharge voltage gap is one of the main bottlenecks of zinc–air batteries (ZABs) because of the kinetically sluggish oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) on the oxygen electrode side. Thus, an efficient bifunctional catalyst for ORR and OER is highly desired. Herein, honeycomb-like MnCo2O4.5 spheres were used as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst. It was demonstrated that both ORR and OER catalytic activity are promoted by MnIV-induced oxygen vacancy defects and multiple active sites. Importantly, the multivalent ions present in the material and its defect structure endow stable pseudocapacitance within the inactive region of ORR and OER; as a result, a low charge–discharge voltage gap (0.43 V at 10 mA cm−2) was achieved when it was employed in a flexible hybrid Zn-based battery. This mechanism provides unprecedented and valuable insights for the development of next-generation metal–air batteries.  相似文献
