Liquid film flow due to an unsteady stretching sheet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have studied two-dimensional flow of a thin liquid film over an impulsively stretching sheet under assumption of uniform initial film thickness. Using singular perturbation technique both momentum and film evolution equations are solved analytically for small Reynolds number and these solutions are verified numerically. Numerical computation for large Reynolds number shows an anomalous behaviour of film thinning rate in different time zone. These results are explained physically and the crucial role-played by viscosity in this case is highlighted. It is found that faster rate of thinning can be obtained if the sheet is stretched impulsively with continuously increasing stretching speed.  相似文献

Axisymmetric flow of thin pure liquid film on a spinning horizontal annular disk is studied under the action of air shear at the liquid–air interface and evaporation. The non-linear evolution equation that is obtained by singular perturbation method is solved analytically, for small Reynolds number, by using the method of characteristic and numerically by the use of Newton–Kantorovich method for any Reynolds number. Font breakdown time and its location from the center of the disk is predicted both by analytically and numerically. The result shows that the thinning of the initial film increases as air stress increase, same result is also escalated in presence of evaporation.  相似文献

The stagnation flow towards a shrinking sheet is studied. A similarity transform reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations which are then integrated numerically. Both two-dimensional and axisymmetric stagnation flows are considered. It is found that solutions do not exist for larger shrinking rates and may be non-unique in the two-dimensional case. The non-alignment of the stagnation flow and the shrinking sheet complicates the flow structure. Convective heat transfer decreases with the shrinking rate due to an increase in boundary layer thickness.  相似文献

The study of non-axisymmetric Homann stagnation-point flow of Walter's B nanofluid along with magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) and non-linear Rosseland thermal radiation over a cylindrical disk in the existence of the time-independent free stream is considered. Moreover, the notable impacts of thermophoresis and Brownian motion are analyzed by Buongiorno's model. The momentum, energy, and concentration equations are converted into the dimensionless coupled ordinary differential equations via similarity transformations, which are later numerically solved by altering the values of the pertinent parameters. The numerical and asymptotic solutions for the large shear-to-strain rate ratio γ =a/bfor the parameters of the displacement thicknesses and the wall-shear stress are computed by perturbative expansion and analyzed. Furthermore, the technique bvp4c in MATLAB is deployed as an efficient method to analyze the calculations for the non-dimensional velocities, temperature, displacement thickness, and concentration profiles. It is observed that the two-dimensional displacement thickness parameters α andβ are reduced due to the viscoelasticity and magnetic field effects. Moreover, when the shear-to-strain rate ratio approaches infinity, α is closer to its asymptotic value, while βand the three-dimensional displacement thickness parameter δ_1 show the opposite trend. The outcomes of the viscoelasticity and the magnetic field on the skin friction are also determined. It is concluded that ■ reaches its asymptotic behavior when the shearto-strain rate ratio approaches infinity. Meanwhile, ■ shows different results.  相似文献

Experiments on characterization of thin liquid films flowing over stationary and rotating disk surfaces are described. The thin liquid film was created by introducing deionized water from a flow collar at the center of an aluminum disk with a known initial film thickness and uniform radial velocity. Radial film thickness distribution was measured using a non-intrusive laser light interface reflection technique that enabled the measurement of the instantaneous film thickness over a finite segment of the disk. Experiments were performed for a range of flow rates between 3.0 lpm and 15.0 lpm, corresponding to Reynolds numbers based on the liquid inlet gap height and velocity between 238 and 1,188. The angular speed of the disk was varied from 0 rpm to 300 rpm. When the disk was stationary, a circular hydraulic jump was present in the liquid film. The liquid-film thickness in the subcritical region (downstream of the hydraulic jump) was an order of magnitude greater than that in the supercritical region (upstream of the hydraulic jump) which was of the order of 0.3 mm. As the Reynolds number increased, the hydraulic jump migrated toward the edge of the disk. In the case of rotation, the liquid-film thickness exhibited a maximum on the disk surface. The liquid-film inertia and friction influenced the inner region where the film thickness progressively increased. The outer region where the film thickness decreased was primarily affected by the centrifugal forces. A flow visualization study of the thin film was also performed to determine the characteristics of the waves on the free surface. At high rotational speeds, spiral waves were observed on the liquid film. It was also determined that the angle of the waves which form on the liquid surface was a function of the ratio of local radial to tangential velocity.  相似文献

The unsteady thin conducting liquid film of non-uniform thickness on a rotating disk which is cooled axisymmetrically from below has been analysed numerically by solving the evolution equation of the free surface. Transient film profiles for different initial liquid film distributions have been obtained. The results reveal that the thinning process and film planarisation are markedly influenced by the heat dissipating or cooling parameter β, Prandtl number σ and Reynolds number Re.  相似文献

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow and mass transfer of an electrically conducting upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid at a porous surface are studied in the presence of a chemically reactive species. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations along with the appropriate boundary conditions are transformed into nonlinear ordinary differential equations and numerically solved by the Keller-box method. The effects of various physical parameters on the flow and mass transfer characteristics are graphically presented and discussed. It is observed that the order of the chemical reaction is to increase the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. Also, the mass transfer rate strongly depends on the Schmidt number and the reaction rate parameter. Furthermore, available results in the literature are obtained as a special case.  相似文献

Film flow around a fast rotating roller   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, the film thickness around the roller is numerically estimated using the volume of fluid (VOF) method to clarify the film-formation process around the rotating roller. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effects of ink properties (viscosity, surface tension) and operational conditions (roller rotation speed, initial immersed angle) on film thickness. The viscosity of the ink and the speed of rotation of the roller were found to be the dominant factors that determine the ink film thickness. In addition, a correlation equation is proposed to predict the thickness of the ink film around a printing roller rotating at a speed of 20–30 rad/s, as a function of angular position, angular velocity, and viscosity.  相似文献

The instabilities of a pendent viscous thin film underneath two corrugated ceilings are studied numerically and theoretically in comparison with the case of a flat wall. With the same initial interface perturbations, it is shown numerically that both the supercritical instability and the subcritical instability can be retarded by the in-phase corrugated ceilings. The lubrication approximation is used to explain the retardation effect of the corrugated ceiling on the supercritical instability of the pendant film, where the linear growth rate is revealed to be power three of the initial film thickness.  相似文献

A nonlinear boundary slip model consisting of an initial slip length and a critical shear rate was used to study the nonlinear boundary slip of squeeze fluid film confined between two approaching spheres. It is found that the initial slip length controls the slip behavior at small shear rate, but the critical shear rate controls the boundary slip at high shear rate. The boundary slip at the squeeze fluid film of spherical surfaces is a strongly nonlinear function of the radius coordinate. At the center or far from the center of the squeeze film, the slip length equals the initial slip length due to the small shear rate. However, in the high shear rate regime the slip length increases very much. The hydrodynamic force of the spherical squeeze film decreases with increasing the initial slip length and decreasing the critical shear rate. The effect of initial slip length on the hydrodynamic force seems less than that of the critical shear rate. When the critical shear rate is very small the hydrodynamic force increases very slowly with a decrease in minimum film thickness. The theoretical predictions agree well with the experiment measurements.  相似文献

A two‐dimensional inviscid incompressible flow in a rectilinear channel of finite length is studied numerically. Both the normal velocity and the vorticity are given at the inlet, and only the normal velocity is specified at the outlet. The flow is described in terms of the stream function and vorticity. To solve the unsteady problem numerically, we propose a version of the vortex particle method. The vorticity field is approximated using its values at a set of fluid particles. A pseudo‐symplectic integrator is employed to solve the system of ordinary differential equations governing the motion of fluid particles. The stream function is computed using the Galerkin method. Unsteady flows developing from an initial perturbation in the form of an elliptical patch of vorticity are calculated for various values of the volume flux of fluid through the channel. It is shown that if the flux of fluid is large, the initial vortex patch is washed out of the channel, and when the flux is reduced, the initial perturbation evolves to a steady flow with stagnation regions. Nonlinear waves on liquid sheets between thin infinite elastic plates are studied analytically and numerically. Linear and nonlinear models are used for the elastic plates coupled to the Euler equations for the fluid. One-dimensional time-dependent equations are derived based on a long-wavelength approximation. Inertia of the elastic plates is neglected, so linear perturbations are stable. Symmetric and mixed-mode travelling waves are found with the linear plate model and symmetric travelling waves are found for the nonlinear case. Numerical simulations are employed to study the evolution in time of initial disturbances and to compare the different models used. Nonlinear effects are found to decrease the travelling wave speed compared with linear models. At sufficiently large amplitude of initial disturbances, higher order temporal oscillations induced by nonlinearity can lead to thickness of the liquid sheet approaching zero.  相似文献

The governing equations for a class of axisymmetric problems under large elastic deformation, concerned with a circular rubber disk with body force as well as non-uniform initial thickness, are formulated in terms of two coupled first-order ordinary differential equations with explicit derivatives. The following two problems subjected to different boundary conditions are solved: (a) Rotating disks with uniform initial thickness (b) Circular disks with non-uniform initial thickness under axisymmetric stretching at the outer boundary. In problem (b), the rubber disk whose initial thickness contour is h0 = crn (where c and n are any constants), or whose final thickness is a constant, is considered. Highly elastic materials with a Mooney strain-energy function are used for numerical calculations.  相似文献

Summary The modification of the axisymmetric viscous flow due to relative rotation of the disk or fluid by a translation of the boundary is studied. The fluid is taken to be compressible, and the relative rotation and translation velocity of the disk or fluid are time-dependent. The nonlinear partial differential equations governing the motion are solved numerically using an implicit finite difference scheme and Newton's linearisation technique. Numerical solutions are obtained at various non-dimensional times and disk temperatures. The non-symmetric part of the flow (secondary flow) describing the translation effect generates a velocity field at each plane parallel to the disk. The cartesian components of velocity due to secondary flow exhibit oscillations when the motion is due to rotation of the fluid on a translating disk. Increase in translation velocity produces an increment in the radial skin friction but reduces the tangential skin friction.  相似文献

Slug flow is one of the representative flow regimes of two-phase flow in micro tubes. It is well known that the thin liquid film formed between the tube wall and the vapor bubble plays an important role in micro tube heat transfer. In the present study, experiments are carried out to clarify the effects of parameters that affect the formation of the thin liquid film in micro tube two-phase flow. Laser focus displacement meter is used to measure the thickness of the thin liquid film. Air, ethanol, water and FC-40 are used as working fluids. Circular tubes with five different diameters, D = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0 and 1.3 mm, are used. It is confirmed that the liquid film thickness is determined only by capillary number and the effect of inertia force is negligible at small capillary numbers. However, the effect of inertia force cannot be neglected as capillary number increases. At relatively high capillary numbers, liquid film thickness takes a minimum value against Reynolds number. The effects of bubble length, liquid slug length and gravity on the liquid film thickness are also investigated. Experimental correlation for the initial liquid film thickness based on capillary number, Reynolds number and Weber number is proposed.  相似文献

We present an optimal control approach for the isothermal film casting process with free surfaces described by averaged Navier–Stokes equations. We control the thickness of the film at the take‐up point using the shape of the nozzle and the initial thickness. The control goal consists in finding an even thickness profile. To achieve this goal, we minimize an appropriate cost functional. The resulting minimization problem is solved numerically by a steepest descent method. The gradient of the cost functional is approximated using the adjoint variables of the problem with fixed film width. Numerical simulations show the applicability of the proposed method. In Shail & Gooden (1982) the problem of a solid particle translating in a semi-infinite fluid, whose surface is contaminated with a surfactant film, was examined in the quasi-steady Stokes flow régime. Various linearised models governing the variation of film concentration were considered, but the analysis was approximate in that the fluid motion generated was represented by that due to a Stokeslet situated at the centre of the particle. In this paper we remove the latter restriction and treat two specific solids, namely a rigid flat circular disk and a sphere, which move axisymmetrically perpendicular to the fluid surface. This surface is assumed to remain plane throughout the motion. The velocity field in the translating-disk problem is represented in terms of harmonic functions, and the resulting mixed boundary-value problems are reduced, for each of the film behaviours examined, to the solution of sets of simultaneous Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. These equations are solved both iteratively and numerically, and the drag on the disk is computed. For the sphere a stream-function formulation in bispherical coordinates is used. Application of the boundary conditions at the sphere and film results in infinite sets of simultaneous linear equations for the coefficients in the eigenfunction expansion of the stream function. These equations are solved by the method of truncation, and the drag on the sphere is determined.  相似文献
