JACQUES-LOUIS LIONS,1928-2001

Jacques-Louis Lions was born in the heart of Provence in the charming city of Grasse,much renowned for its perfume industry and its historical center.In spite of his young age, he had the courage and determination to join the FrenchResistance at the end of 1943, as a soldier in the FFI (French Forces of the Interior). Therehe met Andree, his wife and life-long companion.     

Irvine Noel Baker 1932-2001

Noel Baker was born on 10 August 1932 and died, of a heart attack,on 20 May 2001. He was the only child of a farming family livingnear the township of Virginia north of Adelaide in South Australia,and a fourth-generation Australian. From 1938 to 1944 he attendedthe local school, winning a scholarship to King's College, Adelaide,and from there another scholarship to Prince Alfred College,Adelaide. Here he was inspired by an enthusiastic mathematicsteacher, Mr Williams, who expected pupils to practise mathematicsassiduously, even on Saturday mornings. Prince Alfred Collegestill aims to foster a love of mathematics today, and it hasrecently launched a centre for excellence in mathematics, namedafter Noel.     

John Hawkes (1944-2001)

In his curriculum vitae, John Hawkes lists his research interestsas geometric measure theory, probability (Lévy processes),and potential theory (probabilistic). In fact, he made significantcontributions to all three areas, and there are strong relationshipsbetween them. He used both geometric measure theory and potentialtheory as tools for his study of the trajectories of particularLévy processes, but in many cases he needed to developthe tool before it was ready to be used. We will summarise hisresearch later, but first we discuss what is known of his lifehistory.     

Obituary: John Grant Fauvel (1947-2001)

John Fauvel, who died on 12 May 2001 at the age of 53, was oneof Britain's most distinguished historians of mathematics, andwas emerging as a true and productive scholar in the subjectwhen a long-running liver condition suddenly worsened and claimedhis life.

Bemerkung zu den Reduzierbarkeitskriterien vonR.Albrecht für das Optimum-Mix-Problem

Zusammenfassung Es wird ein neues Reduzierbarkeitskriterium für das Optimum-Mix-Problem abgeleitet, das sich als häufiger anwendbar als ein in [Albrecht, 1967] angegebenes Kriterium erweist.

Summary We give a new reducibility criterion for the optimum mix problem. It is shown that this criterion can be applied more frequently than a similar criterion that can be found in [Albrecht, 1967].

     

Crispin St J. A. Nash-Williams (1932-2001)

Crispin St John Alvah Nash-Williams was born in Cardiff on 19December 1932. His father was Keeper of Archaeology at the NationalMuseum of Wales and also Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at UniversityCollege, Cardiff. War broke out when Crispin was six; his fatherjoined the army and his consequent absence changed the family'slife.
