Composition operators on Dirichlet-type spaces

The Dirichlet-type space ) is the Banach space of functions analytic in the unit disc with derivatives belonging to the Bergman space . Let be an analytic self-map of the disc and define for . The operator is bounded (respectively, compact) if and only if a related measure is Carleson (respectively, compact Carleson). If is bounded (or compact) on , then the same behavior holds on ) and on the weighted Dirichlet space . Compactness on implies that is compact on the Hardy spaces and the angular derivative exists nowhere on the unit circle. Conditions are given which, together with the angular derivative condition, imply compactness on the space . Inner functions which induce bounded composition operators on are discussed briefly.

     

The Hausdorff operator is bounded on the real Hardy space

We prove that the Hausdorff operator generated by a function is bounded on the real Hardy space . The proof is based on the closed graph theorem and on the fact that if a function in is such that its Fourier transform equals for (or for ), then .

     

A counterexample for approximable functions

Let be the unit disk. We show that for some relatively closed set there is a function that can be uniformly approximated on by functions of , but such that cannot be written as , with and uniformly continuous on . This answers a question of Stray.

     

Sobolev spaces and the Cayley transform

The generalised Cayley transform  from an Iwasawa -group into the corresponding real unit sphere  induces isomorphisms between suitable Sobolev spaces and . We study the differential of  , and we obtain a criterion for a function to be in  .

     

Irreducible polynomials which are locally reducible everywhere

For any positive integer , there exist polynomials of degree which are irreducible over and reducible over for all primes if and only if is composite. In fact, this result holds over arbitrary global fields.

     

The Postnikov Tower and the Steenrod problem

The Steenrod problem asks: given a -module, when does there exist a Moore space realizing the module? By using the equivariant Postnikov Tower, it is shown that a -module is -realizable if and only if it is -realizable for all -Sylow subgroups , for all primes .

     

A note on branching theorems

Let be a complex, simply connected semisimple analytic group with a closed connected reductive subgroup. Suppose is an irreducible holomorphic -module and an irreducible holomorphic -module. We prove that Hom possesses the structure of an irreducible -module whenever is . Moreover, for all and if and only if is commutative.

     

Pseudo-differential operators and maximal regularity results for non-autonomous parabolic equations

In this paper, we show that a pseudo-differential operator associated to a symbol ( being a Hilbert space) which admits a holomorphic extension to a suitable sector of acts as a bounded operator on . By showing that maximal -regularity for the non-autonomous parabolic equation is independent of , we obtain as a consequence a maximal -regularity result for solutions of the above equation.

ABSTRACT. We construct the Cremona transformations of satisfying the following property: there exist such that the image of all straight lines through are straight lines through . We characterise these transformations, and for all non-negative integer we give a formula for the dimension of the set of those whose degree is .

     

Linear series over real and -adic fields

We note that the degeneration arguments given by the author in 2003 to derive a formula for the number of maps from a general curve of genus to with prescribed ramification also yields weaker results when working over the real numbers or -adic fields. Specifically, let be such a field: we see that given , , , and satisfying , there exists smooth curves of genus together with points such that all maps from to can, up to automorphism of the image, be defined over . We also note that the analagous result will follow from maps to higher-dimensional projective spaces if it is proven in the case , , and that thanks to work of Sottile, unconditional results may be obtained for special ramification conditions.
