We consider arithmetic properties of the solution of a functional equation f(qx)=xf(x)+1, where q0 is a rational number satisfying certain conditions. A linear independence measure is obtained for the values of f and its derivatives at rational points, both in the archimedian and p-adic case. The proof uses a refinement of the method followed by skolem in the corresponding qualitative considerations.

Suppose _o is a Jordan curve in ³, bounding a minimal surface f_o, and _r a homotopy of _o. Sometimes it will happen, that there is a uniquely determined homotopy f_r of minimal surfaces, having _r as boundary curve. But there may also be a bifurcation at _o, in which, for instance, two or more different minimal surfaces are bounded by _r for r0, but all those surfaces converge to f_o as r converges to 0. In this paper we investigate minimal surfaces of the type of a disc, being represented by the Weierstra formula, and we consider small perturbations of the boundary curve _o. We then deduce conditions, under which the bifurcation process of f_o can be described in terms of the fold-, cusp- or swallowtail- catastrophe of Thom's celebrated list of the 7 elementary catastrophes. This will be possible, although the perturbation takes place in an infinite-dimensional space.

Assume that x is a minimal surface in ³ of the topological type of a 2-ball. Then x is a critical point of the Dirichlet functional on a certain Banach manifold. We can define the space of Jacobi fields of x as the nullspace of the Hessian of at x. Let n(x) denote the dimension of this space and let (x) denote the total number of branch points of x. We show, that always n(x)2(x)+3, and that for almost all minimal surfaces equality holds. We can conclude, that all solutions of the classical Plateau problem, which have branch points in the interior and no branch points on the boundary, are degenerate critical points of the functional .
