Au/graphene nanocomposites are prepared via a one-pot chemical reduction process at room temperature, using graphene oxide (GO) and chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) as precursors. The obtained Au/graphene nanocomposites are characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM shows that the Au nanoparticles with size of approximately 8.7 nm disperse randomly on the surface of graphene. XPS confirms that the Au/graphene nanocomposites show a higher atomic percentage of C/O (6.3/1), in contrast to its precursor GO (2.2/1). Electrochemical studies reveal that the Au/graphene nanocomposites have electrochemically active surface area of 9.82 m2 g?1. Besides, the influence of borohydride concentration on the as-prepared Au/graphene nanocomposites is investigated in details by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and chronopotentiometry. The results indicate that high concentration of borohydride can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of the Au/graphene catalyst.

KOH-activated nitrogen-doped graphene nanosheets (aNG) have been synthesized using thermal annealing method and applied in supercapacitor. The samples are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. Electrochemical results show that a capacitance of 132.4 F g?1 at a charge/discharge current density of 0.1 A g?1 is obtained for KOH-activated nitrogen-doped graphene which is nearly five times larger than that without KOH treatment. The present work demonstrates that KOH activation of thermally annealed nitrogen-doped graphene is a promising method for enhancing its application in energy storage system.

The free-standing and binder-free electrode materials, cotton/graphene (CGN) composites were prepared via a simple “dipping and freeze-drying” process using raw cotton as the supporting body (platform) and graphene oxide (GO) as the suspension. Then the cotton/GO (CGO) composites were annealed at 1000 °C under an Ar flow conditions to obtain CGN composites. The results show that the CGN structure can protect the cotton framework and have better thermal stable property than the cotton alone. Galvanostatic charge–discharge tests demonstrated that the GO concentration had great effects on their electrochemical performances. The CGN (for the GO with 3 and 5 mg ml?1) provide reversible discharge capacity of 160 mAh g?1 after 100 cycles, which is about 1.5 times higher than that of the cotton alone (115 mAh g?1 after 100 cycles). Excellent electrochemical properties of CGN can be ascribed to its controllable structure with more lithium ion storage sites, high electronic conductivity, and fast ion diffusion velocity. The results suggest that this work develops a simple, cheap, and suitable large-scale production method in the lithium-ion batteries.

Few-layered graphene (FLG) with specific surface area of only ~8.2 m2 g?1 was synthesized from graphene oxide (GO) using microwave-assisted exfoliation. GO was prepared using modified Hummers method. Few-layered nature of the exfoliated material was confirmed by electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Coin cells were fabricated using FLG as an anode and lithium metal as a counter electrode. The cells were tested using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling techniques. FLG showed reversible capacity values of ~400 and ~250 mAh g?1 at current rates of 0.1 and 1 C, respectively. Columbic efficiency was more than 98 % while cycle to cycle capacity fading was less than 2 %. Maximum discharge or charging capacity was below 0.3 V, a preferable characteristic for achieving ideal anodic behavior.

The layered polypyrrole-graphene oxide-sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (PPyGO-SDBS) nanocomposites were facilely fabricated via an in situ emulsion polymerization method with the assistance of SDBS as dopant and stabilizer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical performance were employed to analyze the structure and the characteristics of the composites. The results showed that SDBS played an important role in improving the electrochemical performance of the PPyGO-SDBS, by dispersing the PPy between the layers of the GO. The obtained PPyGO-SDBS exhibited remarkable performance as an electrode material for supercapacitors, with a specific capacitance as high as 483 F g?1 at a current density of 0.2 A g?1 when the mass ratio of pyrrole to GO was 80:20. The attenuation of the specific capacitance was less than 20 % after 1,000 charge–discharge processes, supporting the idea that PPy inserted successfully into the GO interlayers. The excellent electrochemical performance seemed to arise from the synergistic effect between the PPy and the GO and the dispersion of the PPy induced by SDBS.

Porous nitrogen-doped graphene (PNG) has been prepared via simple thermal treatment of graphene oxide and urea, and the morphology and structure of the PNG have been characterized by using a range of electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and other techniques. The electrochemical performances of the PNG have been investigated in an ionic liquid electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge via both three-electrode and two-electrode configurations. The PNG electrode delivers a specific capacitance of 310 F g?1 at 1 A g?1 with good cycling stability over 4000 cycles. The high electrochemical performance is ascribed to the porous structure and nitrogen-doping in the PNG. The porous structure enables high specific surface area and rapid ion mobility, contributing to double layer capacitance, while the N-doping enhances electrochemical activity and electric conductivity, contributing to pseudocapacitance. Meanwhile, the ionic liquid electrolyte enables a very wide working voltage of 3 V, leading to a high energy density up to 163.8 W h kg?1. The fabricated supercapacitor can light up a LED for a long while with low self-discharge, showing good potential for practical application.

The homogeneous polyaniline–graphene oxide (PANI-GO) nanocomposites were facilely assembled with a redox system in which cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) and iron dichloride (FeCl2) acted as oxidant and reductant, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that PANI scales coated uniformly on the surface of GO sheets owing to the synergistic effect between the PANI and GO. The obtained PANI-GO nanocomposites exhibited improved electrochemical performance as an electrode material for supercapacitors compared with the pure PANI. The specific capacitance of the PANI-GO nanocomposites was high up to 308.3 F g?1, much higher than that of the pure PANI with specific capacitance of 150 F g?1 at a current density of 1 A g?1 in 2 M H2SO4 electrolyte. The Raman and XPS results illustrated that enhanced electrochemical performance might be attributed to the π-π conjugation between the PANI and GO sheets.

Glucose-derived activated carbon (GAC)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites are prepared by pre-carbonization of the precursors (aqueous mixture of glucose and graphene oxide) and KOH activation of the pyrolysis products. The effect of the mass ratio of graphene oxide (GO) in the precursor on the electrochemical performance of GAC/RGO composites as electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors is investigated. It is found that the thermally reduced graphene oxide sheets serves as a wrinkled carrier to support the activated carbon particles after activation. The pore size distribution and surface area are depended on the mass ratio of GO. Besides, the rate capability of GAC is improved by the introduction of GO in the precursor. The highest specific capacitance of 334 F g?1 is achieved for the GAC/RGO composite prepared from the precursor with a GO mass ratio of 3 %.

A composite of aminosilane-grafted TiO2 (TA) and graphene oxide (GO) was prepared via a hydrothermal process. The TiO2/graphene oxide-based (TA/GO) anode was investigated in an ionic liquid electrolyte (0.7 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiNTf2)) in ionic liquid (N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (MPPyrNTf2)) at room temperature and in sulfolane (1 M lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) in tetramethylene sulfolane (TMS)). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) observations of the anode materials suggested that the electrochemical intercalation/deintercalation process in the ionic liquid electrolyte with vinylene carbonate (VC) leads to small changes on the surface of TA/GO particles. The addition of VC to the electrolyte (0.7 M LiNTf2 in MPPyrNTf2 + 10 wt.% VC) considerably increases the anode capacity. Electrodes were tested at different current regimes in the range 5–50 mA g?1. The capacity of the anode, working at a low current regime of 5 mA g?1, was ca. 245 mA g?1, while a current of 50 mA g?1 resulted in a capacity of 170 mA g?1. The decrease in anode capacity with increasing current rate was interpreted as the result of kinetic limits of electrode operation. A much lower capacity was observed for the system TA/GO│1 M LiPF6 in TMS + 10 wt.% VC│Li.

A novel graphene oxide/bentonite composite (GO/bentonite) was synthesized and then characterized through powder X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Adsorption achieved equilibrium within 10 min. Moreover, U(VI) adsorption on GO/bentonite was highly dependent on solution pH and independent of ionic strength. These characteristics suggested that inner-sphere surface complexes of U(VI) formed on GO/bentonite. The adsorption of U(VI) from aqueous solution on GO/bentonite was fitted to the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich isotherm models. The maximum sorption capacity of GO/bentonite was 234.19 mg g?1 under neutral pH at 303 K. GO/bentonite is a potentially powerful adsorbent for the efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions.

In this work, a simple and novel electrochemical biosensor based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with graphene oxide nanosheets (GO) was developed for detection of DNA sequences. The morphology of prepared nanoplatform was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, infrared (FTIR) and UV/Vis absorption spectra. The fabrication processes of electrochemical biosensor were characterized with cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in an aqueous solution. The optimization of experimental conditions such as immobilization of the probe BRCA1 and its hybridization with the complementary DNA was performed. Due to unique properties of graphene oxide nanosheets such as large surface area and high conductivity, a wide liner range of 1.0 × 10?17–1.0 × 10?9 M and detection limit of 3.3 × 10?18 M were obtained for detection of BRCA1 5382 mutation by EIS technique. Under the optimum conditions, the proposed biosensor (ssDNA/GO/GCE) revealed suitable selectivity for discriminating the complementary sequences from non-complementary sequences, so it can be applicable for detection of breast cancer.

Thiourea aldehyde resin-based heteroatom doping carbon and graphene composites (RHDC/GN) were prepared by an in situ polymerization and carbonization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that thiourea aldehyde resin deposited on lamellar GO flakes during the polymerization and RHDC/GN composites had a hierarchical structure. The specific capacitance of the RHDC/GN composites was high up to 355 F g?1, much higher than that of the pure thiourea aldehyde resin-based heteroatom doping carbon (RHDC) with specific capacitance of 135 F g?1 at a current density of 1.0 A g?1 in 6-M KOH electrolyte. And the hetroatoms in RHDC/GN composites increase the specific capacitance, and GN enhances the conductivity of the electrodes which is beneficial to improving electrochemical cycling stability of the electrode significantly. The specific capacitance retains 90.97% after 5000 charge-discharge processes at 10 A g?1, which provides potential as supercapacitors.

A Co(OH)2/graphene sheet-on-sheet hybrid has been fabricated by in situ one-step hydrothermal growth for electrochemical pseudocapacitors application. The hybrid delivers a specific capacitance of 436 F?g?1 at a current density of 50 A?g?1. Besides, it can keep a specific capacitance of 651 F?g?1 after 10,000 cycles at 10 A?g?1. The excellent performance can be ascribed to the high-quality graphene matrix, regular morphology and high crystallinity of Co(OH)2, and unique sheet-on-sheet structure of the hybrid, endowing enhanced transportation of electrons and Faradic redox reactions. The results demonstrate that the Co(OH)2/graphene hybrid with a sheet-on-sheet structure is promising for high-performance energy storage applications.

In this work, we described an electrochemical sensor using a nanocomposite based on graphene oxide (GO), silver nanoparticles (AgNP), and disordered mesoporous silica (SiO2), which was used for the determination of bisphenol A in water samples. Initially, the hybrid material SiO2/GO was synthesized via sol-gel process, subsequently decorated with AgNP with an approximate 20 nm particle size prepared directly on the surface of the SiO2/GO using N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as an agent reducer. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with SiO2/GO/AgNP and used in developing a sensitive electrochemical sensor for the determination of bisphenol A in phosphate buffer 0.1 mol L?1 (pH 7.0). The detection limit was 45.2 nmol L?1 with a linear response range between 1.0 × 10?7 and 2.6 × 10?6 mol L?1 and a sensitivity of 1.27 × 10?7 A mol?1 L. Finally, the optimized electrochemical sensor was used for the quantitation of endocrine interfering in natural waters.

The graphene anode was investigated in an ionic liquid electrolyte (0.7 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiNTf2)) in room temperature ionic liquid (N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (MPPyrNTf2)). SEM and TEM images suggested that the electrochemical intercalation/deintercalation process in the ionic liquid electrolyte without vinylene carbonate (VC) leads to small changes on the surface of graphene particles. However, a similar process in the presence of VC results in the formation of a coating (SEI—solid electrolyte interface) on the graphene surface. During charging/discharging tests, the graphene electrode working together with the 0.7 M LiNTf2 in MPPyrNTf2 electrolyte lost its capacity, during cycling and stabilizes at ca. 200 mAh g?1 after 20 cycles. The addition of VC to the electrolyte (0.7 M LiNTf2 in MPPyrNTf2?+?10 wt.% VC) considerably increases the anode capacity. Electrodes were tested at different current regimes: ranging between 50 and 1,000 mA g?1. The capacity of the anode, working at a low current regime of 50 mA g?1, was ca. 1,250 mAh g?1, while the current of 500 mA g?1 resulted in capacity of 350 mAh g?1. Coulombic efficiency was stable and close to 95 % during ca. 250 cycles. The exchange current density, obtained from impedance spectroscopy, was 1.3?×?10?7 A cm?2 (at 298 K). The effect of the anode capacity decrease with increasing current rate was interpreted as the result of kinetic limits of the electrode operation.

Crosslinked-polyaniline (CPA) nano-pillar arrays adsorbed on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets were synthesized by in situ solution polymerization through two steps of reduction. The electrochemical analyses demonstrated that the befittingly reduced CPA/RGO composite exhibited high performance as electrode materials for supercapacitors. The CPA/RGO composite showed very high specific capacitance of 1532 F g?1 at a scan rate of 10 mV s?1 or 694 F g?1 at a current density of 2 A g?1 in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte, as well as great energy density of 61.4 W h kg?1 at a current density of 2 A g?1. The electrode material also had decent power density of 4 kW kg?1 at a current density of 10 A g?1, and good cycling stability of 92.5 % capacitance retained after 500 cycles of cyclic voltammetry at 500 mV s?1. The neat microstructures and super electrochemical properties suggest the potential use of the composites in supercapacitors.

In this work, porous NiO microspheres interconnected by carbon nanotubes (NiO/CNTs) were successfully fabricated by the pyrolysis of nickel metal-organic framework precursors with CNTs and evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The structures, morphologies, and electrochemical performances of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, field emission scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge tests, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively. The results show that the introduction of CNTs can improve the lithium-ion storage performance of NiO/CNT composites. Especially, NiO/CNTs-10 exhibits the highest reversible capacity of 812 mAh g?1 at 100 mA g?1 after 100 cycles. Even cycled at 2 A g?1, it still maintains a stable capacity of 502 mAh g?1 after 300 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of NiO/CNT composites should be attributed to the formation of 3D conductive network structure with porous NiO microspheres linked by CNTs, which benefits the electron transfer ability and the buffering of the volume expansion during the cycling process.

Tin oxide (SnO2)/graphene composite was synthesized from SnCl2?·?2H2O and graphene oxide (GO) by a wet chemical-hydrothermal route. The GO was reduced to graphene nanosheet (GNS) and flower-like SnO2 nano-crystals with size about 40 nm were homogeneously distributed on the surface of GNS. The SnO2/graphene composites delivered a superior first discharge capacity of 1941.9 mAhg?1 with a reversible capacity of 901.7 mAhg?1 at the current density of 100 mAg?1. Moreover, even at higher densities of 200 and 500 mAg?1, the SnO2/graphene composite still maintained enhanced cycling stability. After 40 cycles, the discharge capacity was still maintained at 691.1 mAhg?1 at the current density of 100 mAg?1. The SnO2/graphene composite displayed an outstanding Li-battery performance with large reversible capacity and enhanced rate performance, which can be attributed to the highly uniform distribution of SnO2 nanoparticles and high reduction degree of graphene. This result strongly indicates that the SnO2/graphene composite was a promising anode material in high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
