The acoustic phonon dispersions of two Invar crystals , one ordered with the () structure, the other disordered fcc, have been investigated between 3.4 K and 470 K by inelastic and elastic neutron scattering.
For the ordered crystal, pronounced softening of the whole
phonon branch is observed on cooling below the Curie temperature. Particularly strong phonon softening at the M-point zone
boundary of the structure leads to a displacive, antiferrodistortive phase transition at low temperatures. For the disordered crystal, much
weaker softening of the
phonons is observed and restricted to the region near the Brillouin zone center, where increasing elastic scattering with
decreasing temperature indicates the growth of local tetragonal strain. This strain is considered as a typical precursor of
the transformation to bct martensite. Specific heat measurements, performed at low temperatures on both crystals confirm the
neutron scattering results and reveal considerable enhancement of the low energy phonon density of states in the ordered crystal.

Abstract The structural phase transition observed at ?13°C in KAlF4 is shown to be martensitic. The results of an investigation of the phonon spectrum by inelastic neutron scattering are reported. It is shown that the transition is preceded by the softening of a flat phonon branch. A model is proposed to explain how such a softening is related to the martensitic transition. 相似文献

A lyotropic system, consisting of a lecithin (DMPC) and a non-ionic surfactant (C12E5) in water was studied. The system exhibits a lamellar-to-nematic phase transition. The nematic phase appears as the temperature
is decreased and only exists in a very limited temperature and concentration range, for specific lipid-to-surfactant ratios.
While a lamellar phase is found at higher temperatures in both mixed and pure C12E5 systems, the transition to the nematic phase at lower temperatures coincides with a micellar phase in the pure C12E5 system. The transition appears to be driven by the strong temperature dependence of the surfactant film spontaneous curvature.
The structural properties of the lamellar phase close to the lamellar-to-nematic boundary have been studied by polarised light
microscopy and small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering experiments. The signature of a helical defect with Burgers vector
of magnitude 2 is apparent in our data, close to the lamellar-to-nematic phase transition. The proliferation of screw dislocations
in the lamellar phase might be a plausible mechanism for driving this transition.

Anelastic relaxation and 139LaNQR relaxation rates in La2–xSrxCuO4 for Sr content around 2 and 3 percent are discussed in terms of spin and lattice excitations and of the related ordering
processes. It is argued how the phase diagram of La2–xSrxCuO4 at the boundary between the antiferromagnetic (AF) and the spin-glass phase (x
= 0.02) could be more complicate than previously thought, with a transition to a quasi-long range ordered state at K, as indicated by neutron scattering data. On the other hand, the 139LaNQR spectra are compatible with a transition to an AF phase around K, in agreement with the phase diagram commonly accepted in literature. In this case the peaks in NQR and anelastic relaxation
rates around 150 K and 80 K respectively in La1.98Sr0.02CuO4, yield the first evidence of freezing process involving simultaneously lattice and spin excitations, possibly corresponding
to motion of charged stripes.

The low frequency lattice dynamics and its relationship to the second order paraelectric-to-ferroelectric transition in Sn2P2S6 is studied. The dispersion branches of the acoustic and lowest lying optical phonons in the a*-c* plane have been obtained in the ferroelectric phase, for x-polarized phonons. Close to the phase transition a considerable softening is found for the lowest optical mode (Px), comparable to the behaviour observed in previous Raman investigations. As found previously in Sn2P2Se6, a strong coupling between the TO(Px) and TA(uxz) phonons is observed, although, apparently, not strong enough to lead to an incommensurate phase. The soft TO(Px) mode at the zone center is observed. The temperature dependence of its frequency and damping shows that the transition is
not entirely displacive. At low temperatures an unusual apparent negative LO-TO splitting is observed which is shown to arise
from the coupling of the x-polarized soft mode to the nearby z-polarized optical phonon. For comparison, the soft TO(Px) dispersion in the a*-b* plane is measured in both the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases. Consistent frequency changes and LO-TO splitting are
observed, revealing a significant interaction between the TA(uyx) and LA(uxx) acoustics branches and the TO and LO soft optic branches, respectively. In contrast, the nearby y-polarized optic branch shows almost no temperature dependence. Finally, the influence of piezoelectric effects on the limiting
acoustic slopes in the ferroelectric phase is discussed.

Ab initio calculations and a direct method are applied to derive the phonon dispersion relations and phonon density of states for the
ZrC crystal. The results are in good agreement with neutron scattering data. The force constants are determined from the Hellmann-Feynman
forces induced by atomic displacements in a 222 supercell. The elastic constants are found using the deformation method and successfully compare with experimental data.

The lattice dynamics of rhombohedral GaG6 is studied as a function orpressure to probe Its high pressure phase with low superconducting transition temperature using the density functional liner-response theory. The pressureinduced phase transition in CaC6 is attributable to the softening transverse acoustic (TA) phonon mode at the zone boundary X (0.5, 0.0, 0.5) point. The high pressure phase is then explored by performing fully structural optimization in the supercell which accommodates the atomic displacements corresponding to the eigenvectors of the unstable mode of TA(X). The high-pressure phase is predicted to be a monoclinic unit cell with space group P21/m. 相似文献

The ferromagnetic shape memory alloy with nominal composition Ni54Fe19Ga27 is investigated by Ac susceptibility and resistivity measurements. The alloy shows long-range ferromagnetic order below 290 K. The anomaly due to the martensitic transition is observed in the susceptibility and resistivity data in the temperature range around 220 K, which is associated with clear thermal hysteresis. Minor hysteresis loop technique was used to investigate the phase coexistence across the martensitic transition, and our analysis indicate that both martensite and austenite phases mutually coexist in the region of hysteresis. 相似文献

We report results of the ultrasonic investigation of Ba1-xKxBiO3 superconducting (SC) single crystals for two potassium concentrations and in a wide temperature range including the normal and the SC states. An instability of the crystal lattice that develops above
the superconducting phase transition leads to a softening of both the transverse c44 and the longitudinal c11 modes at temperatures between 200 K and 50 K. In the case of Ba0.65K0.35BiO3 a pronounced hysteresis was discovered. Low temperature X-ray powder diffraction analysis does not reveal any change of the
cubic structure in the samples within a resolution of our X-ray technique. The softening of the elastic moduli, the hysteresis,
the maximum in the attenuation of sound along with the possible short- (or long-) range structural distortion can be explained
qualitatively in a simple model by assuming a coupling of the acoustic modes with the anharmonic oscillations of BiO6 octahedra. Some weak anomalies are discovered in the velocity of the longitudinal sound in the vicinity of the superconducting
phase transition.

High resolution data on low energy phonon branches (acoustic and soft optic) along the three principal symmetry axes in pure
KTaO3 were obtained by cold neutron inelastic scattering between 10 and 80 K. Additional off-principal axis measurements were performed
to characterize the dispersion anisotropy (away from the and axes). The parameters of the phenomenological model proposed by Vaks [28] are refined in order to successfully describe the
experimental low temperature (10 <
T
< 100 K) dispersion curves, over an appreciable reciprocal space volume around the zone center ( rlu). The refined model, which involves only 4 temperature-independent adjustable parameters, is intended to serve as a basis
for quantitative computations of multiphonon processes.

Using the local-density approximation, calculating the Hellmann-Feynman forces and applying the direct method, the phonon
dispersion relations for the rutile-like structure of crystalline SnO2 have been derived for the first time. The phonon frequencies at the point agree very well with Raman and infrared data and other phenomenological model calculations. The LO/TO splitting is
estimated by calculating phonons from an elongated supercell. The computations under pressure reveal a soft mode of B1g symmetry which leads to a ferroelastic phase transition. The pressure-dependence of the lattice constants and the Grüneisen
parameters of the modes are calculated.

Incoherent neutron scattering experiments are reported at a number of scattering angles for solid H2 using the time-of-flight technique. The samples had an ortho concentration ofX0.91 and the temperatures were 4.2, 2.2 and 1.2 K. The recorded scattering functions exhibit the elastic line, the ortho-para conversion line, the phonon spectrum on the energy-gain side of the neutrons and finally the phonon spectrum on the energy-loss side. Analysis of the data shows multiple scattering to be very important especially at small scattering angles. Accordingly, the results of an extensive calculation are reported that include up to four-fold scattering. The phonon spectrum that brings calculation and experiment in agreement at all angles is presented. It is concluded from the comparison between the spectra at various temperatures that unexpectedly the samples have always remained in the hexagonal close-packed phase even below the usual transition temperature into the cubic phase. Comparison is made with the spectrum (also in thehcp phase) obtained from coherent neutron scattering. The high-energy phonon tail, to be expected for quantum crystals, is observed and is qualitatively consistent with that in a similar spectral density derived theoretically from ortho-para conversion data under pressure. No evidence of a libron spectrum atT=2.2 K for a sample withX=0.91 could be found, which is consistent with the absence of the cubic orientationally ordered phase in these experiments.Supported in this research by a grant from the National Science Foundation 相似文献

The optical conductivity of La0.85Sr0.15MnO3 single crystals was studied by means of submillimeter and infrared spectroscopy for frequencies cm-1 and temperatures 10 K <
T
<300 K. The submillimeter conductivity follows the temperature dependence of the dc-data. The phonon spectrum of La0.85Sr0.15MnO3 changes considerably below K revealing a structural phase transition induced by charge or orbital order. At T
=10 K a number of phonon modes can be identified in addition to the room-temperature spectrum. The optical conductivity () in the mid-infrared reveals the characteristics of small polaron absorption. Below the magnetic ordering temperature the
polaron binding energy is highly reduced, but the onset of charge order interrupts the formation of free charge carriers with
a Drude-like behavior. The frequency and temperature dependence of in this regime qualitatively resembles the small polaron predictions by Millis et al. (Phys. Rev. B 54, 5405 (1996)).

Magneto-optical spectra of polycrystalline samples of the Fe48Mn24Ga28 Heusler alloy undergoing martensitic transformation from the high-temperature paramagnetic austenitic to ferromagnetic martensitic phase have been studied at 50–320 K in the transversal Kerr effect geometry. A comparison of magnetooptical spectra with data obtained in magnetic measurements has demonstrated that the martensitic transition on the surface of a sample and in its bulk takes place in the same temperature interval. Magnetic anisotropy has been found in the martensitic phase driven by large multidomain inclusions of martensite in austenite. The magneto-optical signal of Fe48Mn24Ga28 differs strongly in spectral shape from that measured in Ni-Mn-Ga. 相似文献

The fulleride salt C60-tetraphenylphosphonium bromide is investigated as a function of temperature by single crystal X-ray diffuse scattering and
diffraction. At room temperature, the C60 orientational disorder is found to be more complex than previously expected. Moreover, a structural phase transition, due
to the C60 orientational ordering, is evidenced around 120 K. Its relation with the stabilization of a static Jahn-Teller effect is
discussed.

We have reproduced magneto-volume effects typical for Invar alloys by examining a spin-analogous model which describes coupled
spatial and magnetic degrees of freedom and, additionally, chemical disorder. Constant pressure Monte Carlo simulations of
this model show an almost vanishing thermal expansion over a broad range of temperatures below ,a softening of the bulk modulus and the absence of a sharp peak in the specific heat at the magnetic phase transition as
observed in Fe65Ni35 Invar.

Observations are reported of inelastic light scattering from the non-zero wave vector soft phonon that drives the incommensurate structural phase transition in K2SeO4. They are shown to correlate with neutron scattering measurements of phonon frequency shifts on cooling to the incommensurate transition temperature. The observed light scattering is suggested to arise from intrinsic disorder. 相似文献

We have observed a softening of phonons and a structural phase transition in a superconducting Ba0.59K0.41BiO3 (Tc = 31 K) single crystal using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The soft phonon occurs for the [1 1 1] transverse acoustic mode at the zone boundary. The phonon energies in this vicinity are found to continuously decrease with decreasing temperature from above room temperature. This softening stops at a temperature close to Ts, where a structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal symmetry occurs. The overall results are consistent with previous data that reported phonon softening and a (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) type superstructure in several Ba1?xKxBiO3 systems. However, we also find weaker (0.5, 0.5, 0) type superstructure peaks that reveal an additional component to the modulation. No significant change related to the superconductivity was observed for these soft phonon energies or linewidths. 相似文献

Magnetic and elastic measurements in single crystals of CeAg and Ce0.09La0.91 Ag are presented. The magnetic susceptibility of Ce0.09La0.91 Ag can be quantitatively interpreted with taking Γ8 as the ground state of the crystal field split state of the Ce3+-ion. In CeAg we confirm a ferromagnetic phase transition at Tc = 5.3 K and a structural transition at 15 K. This latter one is clearly observed with the elastic constant measurements where c11 - c12 exhibits appreciable softening. This structural transition is probably due to a phonon softening at the zone boundary. The magnetic properties of CeAg, especially the small magnetic moment in the ordered region, are discussed. 相似文献
