This paper investigates global smoothness preservation by the Bernstein operators. When the smoothness is measured by the modulus of continuity, this problem is well understood. When it is measured by the second order modulus of smoothness, H. Gonska conjectured that the Lipschitz classes of second order keep invariate under the Bernstein operators. Here we present a counterexample to this conjecture. Then we introduce a new modulus of smoothness and show that the Lip-α(0 < α 1) classes measured by this modulus are invariate under the Bernstein operators. By means of this modulus we also improve some previous results concerning global smoothness preservation.  相似文献

Based on Bernstein's Theorem, Kalandia's Lemma describes the error estimate and the smoothness of the remainder under the second part of Holder norm when a Holder function is approximated by its best polynomial approximation. In this paper, Kalandia's Lemma is generalized to the cases that the best polynomial is replaced by one of its four kinds of Chebyshev polynomial expansions, the error estimates of the remainder are given out under Holder norm or the weighted Holder norms.  相似文献

Uniform boundedness of sequences of variable-coefficient Toeplitz matrices is a delicate problem. Recently we showed that if the generating function of the sequence belongs to a smoothness scale of the H?lder type and if α is the smoothness parameter, then the sequence may be unbounded for α < 1/2 while it is always bounded for α > 1. This work is devoted to the study of the existence and smoothness of the marginal densities of the solution of one-dimensional backward stochastic differential equations. Under monotonicity conditions of a function of the coefficients, we obtain that the smoothness properties of the forward process influencing the backward equation, transfer to the densities of the solution. Once established these conditions, we apply the result to study the tail behavior of the solution process. In the context of adaptive nonparametric curve estimation a common assumption is that a function (signal) to estimate belongs to a nested family of functional classes. These classes are often parametrized by a quantity representing the smoothness of the signal. It has already been realized by many that the problem of estimating the smoothness is not sensible. What can then be inferred about the smoothness? The paper attempts to answer this question. We consider implications of our results to hypothesis testing about the smoothness and smoothness classification problem. The test statistic is based on the empirical Bayes approach, i.e., it is the marginalized maximum likelihood estimator of the smoothness parameter for an appropriate prior distribution on the unknown signal.  相似文献

A. Kamont has discretely characterised Besov spaces on intervals. In this paper, we give a discrete characterisation of Lipschitz spaces on fractals admitting a type of regular sequence of triangulations, and for a class of post critically finite self‐similar sets. This shows that on some fractals, certain discretely defined Besov spaces, introduced by R. Strichartz, coincide with Lipschitz spaces introduced by A. Jonsson and H. In a recent paper [1] the author, along with H. Gonska, introduced some wavelet type integral operators over the whole real line and studied their properties such as shift-invariance, global smoothness preservation, convergence to the unit, and preservation of probability distribution functions. These operators are very general and they are introduced through a convolution-like iteration of another general operator with a scaling type function. In this paper the author provides sufficient conditions, so that the derivatives of the above operators enjoy the same nice properties as their originals. A sufficient condition is also given so that the “global smoothness preservation” related inequality becomes sharp. At the end several applications are given, where the derivatives of the very general specialized operators are shown to fulfill all the above properties. In particular it is shown that they preserve continuous probability density functions.  相似文献

We consider a problem of estimating local smoothness of a spatially inhomogeneous function from noisy data under the framework of smoothing splines. Most existing studies related to this problem deal with estimation induced by a single smoothing parameter or partially local smoothing parameters, which may not be efficient to characterize various degrees of smoothness of the underlying function when it is spatially varying. In this paper, we propose a new nonparametric method to estimate local smoothness of the function based on a moving local risk minimization coupled with spatially adaptive smoothing splines. The proposed method provides full information of the local smoothness at every location on the entire data domain, so that it is able to understand the degrees of spatial inhomogeneity of the function. A successful estimate of the local smoothness is useful for identifying abrupt changes of smoothness of the data, performing functional clustering and improving the uniformity of coverage of the confidence intervals of smoothing splines. We further consider a nontrivial extension of the local smoothness of inhomogeneous two-dimensional functions or spatial fields. Empirical performance of the proposed method is evaluated through numerical examples, which demonstrates promising results of the proposed method.  相似文献

LXI.3, 225–243 (1995)] studied global smoothness preservation by some univariate and multivariate linear operators over compact domains and n , n 1. In particular, they studied a very general positive linear integral type operator [e.g., see G. Anastassiou and H. Gonska, On some shift-invariant integral operators, univariate case, Ann. Pol. Math. LXI.3, 225–243 (1995)] over n that was introduced through a convolution-like integration of another general positive linear operator with a scaling-type function. In this article the authors, among others, extend and generalize [G. Anastassiou and H. Gonska, On some shift-invariant integral operators, univariate case, Ann. Pol. Math. LXI.3, 225–243 (1995)]. Also certain new similar but more general integral operators are introduced and studied. These operators arise in a natural way, and for all these sufficient conditions are given for shift invariance, preservation of higher-order global smoothness and sharpness of the related inequalities, convergence to the unit using the first modulus of continuity, shape preservation, and preservation of continuous probabilistic distribution functions. Several examples of very general specialized operators, old and new, are given that satisfy all the above properties.  相似文献

This paper considers adaptive point-wise estimations of density functions in GARCH-type model under the local Holder condition by wavelet methods.A point-wise lower bound estimation of that model is first investigated;then we provide a linear wavelet estimate to obtain the optimal convergence rate,which means that the convergence rate coincides with the lower bound.The non-linear wavelet estimator is introduced for adaptivity,although it is nearly-optimal.However,the non-linear wavelet one depends on an upper bound of the smoothness index of unknown functions,we finally discuss a data driven version without any assumptions on the estimated functions.  相似文献
