We review lasing in homogeneously broadened coherently driven three-level systems in the framework of semiclassical density matrix formalism and using a nonlinear dynamics point of view. We discuss the following features of these systems: (i) self-pulsing lasing without inversion near the first lasing threshold, (ii) giant pulse lasing based on the population inversion without lasing phenomenon, and (iii) the enlargement of the cavity detuning range where lasing without inversion occurs by using broad-area cavities.  相似文献

The stochastic resonance phenomenon in a single-mode laser system driven by multiplicative and additive Gaussian white noises without external periodic force is studied. We find that there are multiple extrema (maximum) in the curve of the mean output laser intensity versus the logarithm of multiplicative noise level. This phenomenon reveals that the mean output laser intensity can be amplified at several values of the multiplicative noise intensity, whose peaks are likely modulated by a sinusoidal function.  相似文献

We use zeta function techniques to give a finite definition for the Casimir energy of an arbitrary ultrastatic spacetime with or without boundaries. We find that the Casimir energy is intimately related to, but not identical to, the one-loop effective energy. We show that in general the Casimir energy depends on a normalization scale. This phenomenon has relevance to applications of the Casimir energy in bag models of QCD.Within the framework of Kaluza-Klein theories we discuss the one-loop corrections to the induced cosmological and Newton constants in terms of a Casimir like effect. We can calculate the dependence of these constants on the radius of the compact dimensions, without having to resort to detailed calculations.  相似文献

We demonstrate that a quantum particle, initially prepared in a quantum well, can propagate through a reservoir with a continuous spectrum and reappear in a distant well without being registered in the reservoir. It is shown that such a passage through the reservoir takes place even if the latter is continuously monitored. We discuss a possible experimental realization of such a teleportation phenomenon in mesoscopic systems.  相似文献

The authors have found the acoustic levitation phenomenon where planar objects of 10 kg weight can be levitated near a vibration surface. This phenomenon has been studied for non-contact transportation. A circular planar object can be suspended without contacting a circular vibration plate. We have studied the holding force which acts horizontally on the levitated objects. The horizontal position of the object is stabilized by this force. In this paper, we discuss the effect of the radius of a levitated object, levitation distance, displacement amplitude of the vibration plate and the vibration mode on the suspending force.  相似文献

We study the Hamiltonian of a two-level system interacting with a one-mode radiation field by means of the Wigner method and without using the rotating-wave approximation. We show that a phenomenon of collapses and revival, reminiscent of that exhibited by the Jaynes-Cummings model, takes place in the high-coupling limit. This process appears as irreversible or virtually reversible, according to whether the semiclassical regime is chaotic or not. Thus, we find a new mechanism for dissipation in the quantum domain.  相似文献

We demonstrate coherence resonance in a dynamical system without external noise. The experimental evidence is reported in the low frequency fluctuations of a chaotic diode laser with optical feedback. The phenomenon is also verified numerically using the Lang-Kobayashi equations for a single solitary mode laser, without noise terms. Fast deterministic dynamics plays the role of an effective exciting noise, narrowing the resonance in the autonomous slow power drop cycles of the laser. This new result is the natural extension of deterministic stochastic resonance and noise induced coherence resonance predicted and observed in recent years.  相似文献

We describe a novel phenomenon in which vortices are produced due to resonant oscillations of a scalar field which is driven by a periodically varying temperature T, with T remaining much below the critical temperature T(c). Also, in a rapid heating of a localized region to a temperature below T(c), far separated vortex and antivortex can form. We compare our results with recent models of defect production during reheating after inflation. We also discuss possible experimental tests of our predictions of topological defect production without ever going through a phase transition.  相似文献

We present a model for tail wavelets, a phenomenon known as "echo" in the literature. The tail wavelet may appear in signal reconnaissances in the merger of binary compact objects, including black holes and neutron stars. We show that the dark matter surrounding the compact objects lead to a speculated tail wavelet following the main gravitational wave(GW). We demonstrate that the radiation pressure of the main wave is fully capable of pushing away the surrounding matter to some altitude, and splashing down of the matter excites the tail wavelet after ringing down of the main wave. We illustrate this concept in a simplified model, where numerical estimations are conducted on the specific distribution of dark matter outside the black hole horizon and the threshold values in accordance with observations. We study the full back reaction of the surrounding dark matter to the metric and find that the effect on to the tail wavelets is insignificant. We reveal the fine difference between the tail wavelets of a dressed and a bare black hole. We demonstrate that the tail wavelet can appear as a natural phenomenon in the frame of general relativity, without invoking modified gravities or quantum effects.  相似文献

We display the phenomenon of the hole burning which appearing without saturation field under the effect of different parameters. Theoretically the effect of spontaneously generating coherence (SGC) on the probe polarization spectrum in a Doppler broadened four-level N-type atomic system are investigated when the two driven and probe fields are arranged in copropagating and counterpropagating configurations which play an important role in appearing the coherent hole-burning (CHB) phenomenon. The condition of appearing the hole burning in the polarization spectrum at the presence of spontaneously generating coherence (SGC) and the nonradiative decay rates is that the wave number fields are different.  相似文献

We report on a new random laser phenomenon that gives rise to narrow emission modes without requiring optical cavities. Sharp emission peaks are observed experimentally over a broad range of scattering strengths and analyzed in numerical calculations. We find that the introduction of exponential gain in a multiple light scattering process strongly increases the importance of very long light paths. Such long paths are rare and often neglected in passive disordered materials but we show that they can dominate the emission spectrum from an amplifying disordered system.  相似文献

We report a novel phenomenon in sodium-calcium-silicate glass doped with Ta(5+). Under irradiation with a 780 nm femtosecond pulsed laser, strong blue emission centered at about 420 nm could be observed. The spectral characteristics are similar to those pumped by ultraviolet photons. The log-log correlation between integrated emission intensity and pump power reveals that a two-photon absorption process is involved in the phenomenon. It is suggested that the presence of localized Ta(5+)5d(0) energy levels is responsible for the appearance of the blue emission. The results indicate that transition metal ions without d electrons play an important role in fields of optics when embedded into glass hosts.  相似文献

We investigate the generalized Einstein equations derived from the Lagrangian which is an arbitrary function ofR. The importance of the saturation phenomenon is underlined, which may replace the role of a cosmological constant. We investigate chaotic phase synchronization (CPS) in three-coupled chaotic oscillator systems. According to the coupling strength and mismatches in the frequencies of these oscillators, we can observe complete CPS where all three oscillators exhibit CPS, and partial CPS where only two oscillators exhibit CPS. When the coupling strength is weakened, we observe a phenomenon that complete CPS among the three oscillators is suddenly disrupted without going through partial CPS. In this case oscillators exhibit quasi-CPS where two oscillators appear to exhibit CPS transiently, and the combination of the two oscillators changes with time. We call this phenomenon CPS switching D. It is revealed that phase fluctuation plays an important role in CPS switching D. It is also shown that the amplitude with a specific structure strengthens the degree of CPS switching. In the present paper, we characterize this CPS switching and discuss its mechanism.  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrate the superior discrimination of separated, unentangled two-qubit correlated states using nonlocal measurements, when compared with measurements based on local operations and classical communications. When predicted theoretically, this phenomenon was dubbed "quantum nonlocality without entanglement." We characterize the performance of the nonlocal, or joint, measurement with a payoff function, for which we measure 0.72 +/- 0.02, compared with the maximum locally achievable value of 2/3 and the overall optimal value of 0.75.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation in a helium atom with a two-color optical field synthesized by an intense 6 fs pulse at 800 nm and a relatively weak 21.3 fs pulse at 400 nm. When the frequency-doubled pulse is properly time shifted with respect to the fundamental pulse, an ultrabroad extreme ultraviolet supercontinuum spectrum with a 148 eV spectral width can be generated which directly creates an isolated 65 as pulse even without phase compensation. We explain this extraordinary phenomenon by analyzing maximum electron kinetic energies at different return times.  相似文献

In this paper we report on our preliminary results and recent work on building cognitive wireless networks that achieve resource sharing in a local environment. We emphasize two major issues. First, the cross-layer optimization at the network level requires exchange of information between OSI-layers in the terminal and often among the nodes that form the network. Second, the cooperative behavior among the radios is often believed to require a rich exchange of information. We show in this paper that cooperation can be an emergent phenomenon without any complex signalling. We apply Minority Games to cognitive wireless networks to show that resource sharing can be achieved without detailed information exchange or coordination between strategies. We further argue that Minority Games are not only a useful analysis tool, but a potentially efficient method to develop actual resource sharing algorithms. We conclude the paper by pointing out that also other swarm intelligence type of solutions could be applied to cognitive radio communications.  相似文献
