In this paper we obtain characterizations of metrizable spaces, paracompact M-spaces, Moore spaces and semimetrizable spaces in terms of the way those spaces are embedded in their Stone-?ech compactification. In addition, we give an internal characterization of paracompact M-spaces which we use in the proof of the embedding characterization.  相似文献

Following Pareek a topological space X is called D-paracompact if for every open cover A of X there exists a continuous mapping f from X onto a developable T1-space Y and an open cover B of Y such that { f-1[B]|BB } refines A. It is shown that a space is D-paracompact if and only if it is subparacompact and D-expandable. Moreover, it is proved that D-paracompactness coincides with a covering property, called dissectability, which was introduced by the author in order to obtain a base characterization of developable spaces.  相似文献

This paper studies the compact-open topology on the set KC(X) of all real-valued functions defined on a Tychonoff space, which are continuous on compact subsets of X. In addition to metrizability, separability and second countability of this topology on KC(X), various kinds of topological properties of this topology are studied in detail. Actually the motivation for studying the compact-open topology on KC(X) lies in the attempt of having a simpler proof for the characterization of a completeness property of the compact-open topology on C(X), the set of all real-valued continuous functions on X.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to investigate pairwise almost compact bitopological spaces. These spaces satisfy a bitopological compactness criterion which is strictly weaker than pairwise C-compactness and is independent of other well-known bitopological compactness notions. Pairwise continuous maps from such spaces to pairwise Hausdorff spaces are pairwise almost closed, the property is invariant under suitably continuous maps, is inherited by regularly closed subspaces and may be characterized in terms of certain covers as well as the adherent convergence of certain open filter bases. Some new natural bitopological separation axioms are introduced and in conjunction with pairwise almost compactness yield interesting results, including a sufficient condition for the bitopological complete separation of disjoint regularly closed sets by semi-continuous functions.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to study which quasi-metrizable spaces are monotonically normal. In particular, we provide a sufficient condition for a quasi-metrizable space to be monotonically normal. This enables us to prove the monotone normality of a certain amount of interesting examples of quasi-metric spaces; for instance, we show that the continuous poset of formal balls of a metric space, endowed with the Scott topology, is a monotonically normal quasi-metrizable space.  相似文献

We introduce a new reflection principle which we call “Fodor-type Reflection Principle” (FRP). This principle follows from but is strictly weaker than Fleissner's Axiom R. For instance, FRP does not impose any restriction on the size of the continuum, while Axiom R implies that the continuum has size ?2.We show that FRP implies that every locally separable countably tight topological space X is meta-Lindelöf if all of its subspaces of cardinality ?1 are (Theorem 4.3). It follows that, under FRP, every locally (countably) compact space is metrizable if all of its subspaces of cardinality ?1 are (Corollary 4.4). This improves a result of Balogh who proved the same assertion under Axiom R.We also give several other results in this vein, some in ZFC, others in some further extension of ZFC. For example, we prove in ZFC that if X is a locally (countably) compact space of singular cardinality in which every subspace of smaller size is metrizable then X itself is also metrizable (Corollary 5.2).  相似文献

Quasi-uniformities (not necessarily symmetric uniformities) are usually studied via entourages (special neighbourhoods of the diagonal in X×X) where one can simply forget about the symmetry requirement. This has been done successfully in the point-free context as well, but there is a demand for a covering approach, a.o. because the point-free representation of the square X×X is not without difficulties. Based on the (spatial) ideas from Gantner and Steinlage (1972) [9], a cover type quasi-uniformity was developed in Frith (1987) [6] and other papers using biframes, the point-free variant of bitopologies. In this paper we show that this can be avoided and present a cover type quasi-uniformity structure enriching that of frame directly.  相似文献

We study conditions under which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity UH of a quasi-uniform space (X,U) on the set P0(X) of the nonempty subsets of X is bicomplete.Indeed we present an explicit method to construct the bicompletion of the T0-quotient of the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of a quasi-uniform space. It is used to find a characterization of those quasi-uniform T0-spaces (X,U) for which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of their bicompletion on is bicomplete.  相似文献

We are going to investigate simultaneous extensions of various topological structures (i.e. traces on several subsets at the same time are prescribed), also with separation axioms T0, T1, symmetry (in the sense of Part I, § 3), Riesz property, Lodato property. The following questions will be considered: (i) Under what conditions is there an extension? (ii) How can the finest extension be described? (iii) Is there a coarsest extension? (iv) Can we say more about extensions of two structures than in the general case? (v) Assume that certain subfamilies (e.g. the finite ones) can be extended; does the whole family have an extension, too? In this paper, it is proved that a space with a point-countable base is an open, countable-to-one image of a metric space, and a quotient, countable-to-one image of a metric space is characterized by a point-countable 0-weak base. Examples are provided in order to answer negatively questions posed by Gruenhage et al. [G. Gruenhage, E. Michael, Y. Tanaka, Spaces determined by point-countable covers, Pacific J. For a non-compact metrizable space X, let E(X) be the set of all one-point metrizable extensions of X, and when X is locally compact, let EK(X) denote the set of all locally compact elements of E(X) and be the order-anti-isomorphism (onto its image) defined in [M. Henriksen, L. Janos, R.G. Woods, Properties of one-point completions of a non-compact metrizable space, Comment. Math. Univ. Carolin. 46 (2005) 105-123; in short HJW]. By definition λ(Y)=?n<ωclβX(UnX)\X, where Y=X∪{p}∈E(X) and {Un}n<ω is an open base at p in Y. We characterize the elements of the image of λ as exactly those non-empty zero-sets of βX which miss X, and the elements of the image of EK(X) under λ, as those which are moreover clopen in βX\X. This answers a question of [HJW]. We then study the relation between E(X) and EK(X) and their order structures, and introduce a subset ES(X) of E(X). We conclude with some theorems on the cardinality of the sets E(X) and EK(X), and some open questions.  相似文献

We give a general closing-off argument in Theorem 2.3 from which several corollaries follow, including (1) if X is a locally compact Hausdorff space then |X| ≤ 2wL(X)ψ(X), and (2) if X is a locally compact power homogeneous Hausdorff space then |X| ≤ 2wL(X)t(X). The first extends the well-known cardinality bound 2ψ(X) for a compactum X in a new direction. As |X| ≤ 2wL(X)χ(X) for a normal spaceX[4], this enlarges the class of known Tychonoff spaces for which this bound holds. In 2.12 we give a short, direct proof of (1) that does not use 2.3. Yet 2.3 is broad enough to establish results much more general than (1), such as if X is a regular space with a π-base ? such that |B| ≤ 2wL(X)χ(X) for all B ∈ ?, then |X| ≤ 2wL(X)χ(X).

Separately, it is shown that if X is a regular space with a π-base whose elements have compact closure, then |X| ≤ 2wL(X)ψ(X)t(X). This partially answers a question from [4] and gives a third, separate proof of (1). We also show that if X is a weakly Lindelöf, normal, sequential space with χ(X) ≤ 2?0, then |X| ≤ 2?0.

Result (2) above is a new generalization of the cardinality bound 2t(X) for a power homogeneous compactum X (Arhangel'skii, van Mill, and Ridderbos [3], De la Vega in the homogeneous case [10]). To this end we show that if U ? clD ? X, where X is power homogeneous and U is open, then |U| ≤ |D|πχ(X). This is a strengthening of a result of Ridderbos [19].  相似文献
