Critical micelle concentrations were determined by conductance measurements for decyl-, dodecyl-, tetradecyl- and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide in water at 25, 60, 95, 130, and 160°C. The results are discussed in terms of the equilibrium model and the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann model for micelle formation. The free energies of transferring a methylene group from water to the oil-like interior of the micelle are found to be –781 at 25°C, –796 at 60°C, –819 at 95°C, –815 at 130°C, and –787 at 160°C cal-mol–1. 相似文献

Effect of alcohols on the micellar properties in aqueous solution of alkyltrimethylammonium bromides
D. Attwood V. Mosquera J. Rodriguez M. Garcia M. J. Suarez 《Colloid and polymer science》1994,272(5):584-591
The effect ofn-butanol,n-propanol, andn-hexanol on the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and degree of ionisation of the micelles of dodecyl-, tetradecyl- and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromides in aqueous solution has been determined by conductimetric techniques. Increase of the molality of added alcohol over the concentration ranges examined (up to 0.3 mol kg–1 butanol, 0.07 mol kg–1 pentanol and 0.025 mol kg–1 hexanol) caused a progressive decrease of CMC and increase of the degree of ionisation for each surfactant-alcohol system. At a constant molality of added alcohol the degree of ionisation increased with a) an increase of the chain length of the surfactant for each alcohol and b) an increase of the chain length of the alcohol for each surfactant. The distribution of each alcohol between the aqueous and micellar phases and the free energy of solubilization were determined from the change of CMC with molality of added alcohol. 相似文献

The aggregation of two polymerisable surfactants dodecylethylmethacrylatedimethylammonium bromide (C12PS) and hexadecylethylmethacrylatedimethylammonium bromide (C16PS) was studied with a battery of methods. Both surfactants form premicelles at low concentration, and show a critical micelle concentration and a transition between spherical and rod-like micelles. The micelle ionization degree and the adsorption at the air/solution interface were also studied. Results are interpreted on the basis of the conformation of the polar head group. 相似文献

The specific conductivity of dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium bromide (C12BBr) in aqueous solutions, in the temperature range of 15 to 40 °C, has been measured as a function of molality. The two breaks which were found on the conductivity against molality plots were attributed to the critical micelle concentration, cmc, and second critical micelle concentration, 2nd cmc, respectively. The ratio of the slopes, S, of the three linear fragments on the plots, S2/S1 and S3/S1, was attributed to the degree of ionization of the micelles at cmc and 2nd cmc respectively. It was shown that the values of the 2nd cmc estimated above 27 °C are only apparent due to thermal disintegration of the micelles. In the temperature range of 15 to 27 °C, the values of the 2nd cmc increase gradually and the plot of the 2nd cmc against temperature is concave. The ratio of 2nd cmc/cmc for C12BBr at 25 °C amounts to 15 and appears to be high compared to the literature values for other surfactants. For comparative purposes the cmc and 2nd cmc values were also estimated conductometrically for decyldimethylbenzylammonium bromide (C10BBr) at 25 °C. The 2nd cmc value for this surfactant is higher compared to the value for the C12 homologue by a factor of 2.6.The standard Gibbs free energies of micellization at cmc and at the 2nd cmc were estimated from the experimental data for both surfactants at 25 °C. 相似文献

Conductivity measurements have been carried out on aqueous solutions of two antidepressant drugs (nortriptyline hydrochloride and clomipramine hydrochloride) with four cationic surfactants (monomeric: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, tetradecylammonium bromide; dimeric: 1,5-pentanediyl-alpha-omega-bis(hexadecyldimethylammonium bromide), 1,4-butanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(hexadecyldimethylammonium bromide) as well as with sodium chloride. Counterions from NaCl adsorb to the charged headgroup of the drug molecules and reduce the repulsion, hence cmc decreases. cmc values decreased with the addition of surfactants indicating mixed micelle formation. Experimental mole fraction of surfactants in micelle (X1) and their ideal values (X1 id) also support this explanation. Interaction parameter, beta, and excess free energy of micellization are negative suggesting synergism in mixed state. Activity coefficients are less than unity which means non-ideal mixing. 相似文献

Effects of three organic solvents, viz. methyl cellosolve, acetonitrile, and formamide, on the micellization process of Gemini surfactant pentamethylene-1,5-bis(tetradecyldimethylammonium bromide) aqueous solutions, with the volume percentages of the organic solvents up to 50%, have been investigated conductometrically. The studies were made at different temperatures and the data were used to find out different micellization parameters. From the study, it was observed that, although an increment in the amount of the organic solvents delays the micellization, the increase in the critical micelle concentration (cmc) is comparatively less below 20%(v/v) showing the predominance of water character in the bulk phase at lower compositions of the organic solvents. Applying equilibrium model for micelle formation, various thermodynamic parameters were also calculated from the temperature dependence of the cmc values and the results show that the micellization process becomes less spontaneous as the volume % of the organic solvent increases in the system due to the action of water-organic solvent mixed media as better solvent than pure water (solvophobic effect) for the studied Gemini molecules. 相似文献

On the basis of a detailed physicochemical model, a complete system of equations is formulated that describes the equilibrium between micelles and monomers in solutions of ionic surfactants and their mixtures with nonionic surfactants. The equations of the system express mass balances, chemical and mechanical equilibria. Each nonionic surfactant is characterized by a single thermodynamic parameter — its micellization constant. Each ionic surfactant is characterized by three parameters, including the Stern constant that quantifies the counterion binding. In the case of mixed micelles, each pair of surfactants is characterized with an interaction parameter, β, in terms of the regular solution theory. The comparison of the model with experimental data for surfactant binary mixtures shows that β is constant — independent of the micelle composition and electrolyte concentration. The solution of the system of equations gives the concentrations of all monomeric species, the micelle composition, ionization degree, surface potential and mean area per head group. Upon additional assumptions for the micelle shape, the mean aggregation number can be also estimated. The model gives quantitative theoretical interpretation of the dependence of the critical micellization concentration (CMC) of ionic surfactants on the ionic strength; of the CMC of mixed surfactant solutions, and of the electrolytic conductivity of micellar solutions. It turns out, that in the absence of added salt the conductivity is completely dominated by the contribution of the small ions: monomers and counterions. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with experimental data. 相似文献

In order to add to the existing knowledge of aqueous solution behavior of bile salts in presence of amino acids, the micellization properties of sodium cholate (NaC) (1 to 20) mmol · kg−1, and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) (0.5 to 10) mmol · kg−1 in 0.1 mol · kg−1 aqueous solution of glycine, leucine, methionine, and histidine have been investigated at different temperatures (293.15 to 318.15) K at intervals of T = 5 K by using conductivity and fluorescence probe studies. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values have been determined and elucidated in terms of hydrophobicity as well as hydrophilicity of NaC and NaDC in aqueous solution of these additives. Thermodynamic parameters of micellization viz. standard Gibbs free energy (ΔmicGo), standard enthalpy (ΔmicHo), and standard entropy (ΔmicSo) have also been calculated to extract information regarding the nature of micellization of bile salts in aqueous solutions. The (enthalpy + entropy) compensation plots have been interpreted to the contribution of chemical part towards micellization or stability of the micelle formed. 相似文献

The mixed micelle formation of binary cationic 14-s-14 gemini with conventional single chain surfactants was studied by conductivity measurements. The critical micelle concentration(cmc) and the degree of counterion binding values(g) of the binary systems were determined. The results were analyzed by applying regular solution theory(RST) to calculate micellar compositions(X),activity coefficients(f1,f2),and the interaction parameters(β).The synergistic interactions of all the investigated cationic gemini+conventional surfactant combinations were found to be dependent upon the length of hydrophobic spacer of the gemini surfactant. The excess Gibbs free energy of mixing was evaluated, and it indicated relatively more stable mixed micelles for the binary combinations. 相似文献

Dimeric or gemini surfactants are novel surfactants that are finding a great deal of discussion in the academic and industrial arena. They consist of two hydrophobic chains and two polar head groups covalently linked by a spacer. Data on critical micelle concentration (cmc) and degree of counterion dissociation (α) are reported on bis-cationic C16H33N+(CH3)2–(CH2)s–N+(CH3)2C16H33, 2Br−, referred to as 16-s-16, for spacer lengths s=4, 5, 6 in aqueous and in polar nonaqueous (1-propanol, 2-methoxyethanol or methyl cellosolve, dimethyl sulfoxide, acetonitrile)-water-mixed solvents. The behavior is compared with conventional monomeric surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Thermodynamic parameters are obtained from the temperature dependence of the cmc values. It is observed that micellization tendency of the surfactants decreases in the presence of polar nonaqueous solvents. However, detailed studies with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) show that the geminis nearly outclass the micellization-arresting property of this solvent. Also, within geminis, higher spacer length is found suitable for showing micellization even with high DMSO content (50% v/v). The implications of these results of gemini micellization may be useful in micellar catalysis in polar nonaqueous solvents. 相似文献

In the present study we report the micellization behavior of imipramine hydrochloride(IMP)in absence and presence of different concentrations of inorganic salts(LiCl,NaF,NaCl,NaBr,and KCl)and ureas(urea and thiourea)over the temperature range from 288.15 to 303.15 K.The critical micellization concentrations(cmc)of drug and drug+additive systems were determined by conductometric technique. With increasing temperature the cmc first increases then decreases.Maximum cmc values were obtained at 293.15 K with or without additives. In presence of inorganic salts the cmc value decreases which is explained on the basis of nature and ion size of the added ion.Urea and thiourea also decrease the cmc at low concentrations(0.2 mmo·lL -1 urea and 0.1 mmo·lL -1 thiourea),but,at higher concentrations, increase in cmc is observed. The related thermodynamic parameters are also evaluated and discussed. 相似文献

The micellar properties of tetradecyltrimethylammonium nitrate (C14TANO3) in aqueous solutions in the temperature range of 10 to 35 °C and in aqueous solutions of benzyl alcohol (BzOH) at 25 °C were studied conductometrically. The specific conductivity data served for the evaluation of critical micelle concentration, cmc, and the degree of ionization of the micelles, , of the surfactant. From the temperature dependence of the cmc the thermodynamic parameters for micellization of C14TANO3 were calculated by applying Mullers modified equation. BzOH was found to affect strongly the cmc and values of the surfactant. The plot of the cmc/cmco ratio (where cmco is for pure water) as a function of BzOH molality, exhibits a characteristic break, which was attributed to the commencement of self-association of BzOH in aqueous solution at a molality of ca. 0.05. By applying the theoretical treatment suggested by Motomura for binary surfactant systems, the molar fraction of BzOH in the micelles at cmc, was estimated as a function of molality of the alcohol. C14TANO3 appears to be slightly more hydrophobic compared to the corresponding bromide. 相似文献

Electrical conductivity of aqueous solutions of tetradecylpyridinium bromide and chloride has been measured as a function of surfactant molal concentration and temperature. From the molal dependence of conductivity, the critical micelle concentration and the micellar ionization degree were estimated. The temperature dependence of these parameters has been used for calculating the thermodynamic parameters related with the micellization process by using the classical charged pseudophase separation model. The effect of the counterion on the conventional thermodynamic potentials of micellization such as standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy has also been a matter of study. Finally, the occurrence of the enthalpy–entropy compensation phenomenon was verified and the relevant parameters discussed. 相似文献

In conformity with the conclusion obtained previously, the mixed micelle formation of surfactants was treated thermodynamically as the appearance of a macroscopic bulk phase with the aid of the excess thermodynamic quantities similar to those used for the adsorbed film. The composition of surfactant in the mixed micelle and the thermodynamic quantities of micelle formation were found to be evaluated by applying the thermodynamic equations derived. These equations were extended so as to be applicable to any kind of surfactant mixture. It was shown that the critical micelle concentration vs. composition of surfactant curves form a diagram analogous to the phase diagram of binary mixture. Applying the equation to the published data on typical surfactant systems, this thermodynamic approach was proved to be useful to clarify the miscibility of surfactants in the micellar state. 相似文献

Enthalpies of solution of methyltributylammonium bromide, tetraethanolammonium bromide, and three azoniaspiroalkane bromides in binary solvent mixtures of water and N,N-dimethylformamide have been measured calorimetrically at 298.15oK over the whole mole fraction range. The results are interpreted in terms of a simple hydration model with two parameters and compared with those of the corresponding tetraalkylammonium bromides. Enthalpic studies with different types of quaternary ammonium bromides are useful in reexamining the assumptions and limitations of the hydration model. 相似文献

Two synthetic pathways have been elaborated to prepare new series of highly fluorinated sulfamates with excellent yields. Surface tension measurements at the air/water interface showed that these compounds constitute new excellent non-ionic surfactants exhibiting high surface activity in the range of the best non-ionic fluoro surfactants already described in the literature. The most important feature of this work is that, in comparison with the classical non-ionic fluoro surfactants, these sulfamates are easily synthesized in a monodisperse form from classical and relatively non-toxic starting materials. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), the maximum surface excess concentration (Γ) and the minimum area per molecule (a) have been calculated from the surface tension measurements on surfactant aqueous solutions. Relationships have been established between the length of both the fluorinated tail and hydrocarbon spacer linking the hydrophobic tail to the hydrophilic head, and the interfacial properties. 相似文献
