It is well known that a singular integer matrix can be factorized into a product of integer idempotent matrices. In this paper, we prove that every n  × n (n > 2) singular integer matrix can be written as a product of 3n + 1 integer idempotent matrices. This theorem has some application in the field of synthesizing VLSI arrays and systolic arrays.  相似文献

We obtain upper bounds for the number of arbitrary and symmetric matrices with integer entries in a given box (in an arbitrary location) and a given determinant. We then apply these bounds to estimate the number of matrices in such boxes which have an integer eigenvalues. Finally, we outline some open questions.  相似文献

An affine column independent matrix is a matrix whose entries are polynomials of degree at most 1 in a number of indeterminates where no indeterminate appears with a nonzero coefficient in two different columns. A completion is a matrix obtained by giving values to each of the indeterminates. Affine column independent matrices are more general than partial matrices where each entry is either a constant or a distinct indeterminate. We determine when the rank of all completions of an affine column independent matrix is bounded by a given number, generalizing known results for partial matrices. We also characterize the square partial matrices over a field all of whose completions are nonsingular. The maximum number of free entries in such matrices of a given order is determined as well as the partial matrices with this maximum number of free entries.  相似文献

We provide positive answers to some open questions presented recently by Kim and Shader on a continuity-like property of the P-vertices of nonsingular matrices whose graph is a path. A criterion for matrices associated with more general trees to have at most n − 1 P-vertices is established. The cases of the cycles and stars are also analyzed. Several algorithms for generating matrices with a given number of P-vertices are proposed.  相似文献

This paper defines a new type of matrix (which will be called a centro-invertible matrix) with the property that the inverse can be found by simply rotating all the elements of the matrix through 180 degrees about the mid-point of the matrix. Centro-invertible matrices have been demonstrated in a previous paper to arise in the analysis of a particular algorithm used for the generation of uniformly-distributed pseudo-random numbers.An involutory matrix is one for which the square of the matrix is equal to the identity. It is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the centro-invertible matrices and the involutory matrices. When working in modular arithmetic this result allows all possible k by k centro-invertible matrices with integer entries modulo M to be enumerated by drawing on existing theoretical results for involutory matrices.Consider the k by k matrices over the integers modulo M. If M takes any specified finite integer value greater than or equal to two then there are only a finite number of such matrices and it is valid to consider the likelihood of such a matrix arising by chance. It is possible to derive both exact expressions and order-of-magnitude estimates for the number of k by k centro-invertible matrices that exist over the integers modulo M. It is shown that order (N) of the N=M(k2) different k by k matrices modulo M are centro-invertible, so that the proportion of these matrices that are centro-invertible is order (1/N).  相似文献

It is known,from Lie groups, that the rank r idempotent matrices in Mn form an arcwise connected 2n (n-r)-dimensional analytic manifold. We study the class of so-called totally dominant matrices in the usual algebra and in the max algebra in which the sum is the maximum and the multiplication is usual. It turns out that this class coincides with the well known class of positive matrices having positive the determinants of all 2×2 submatrices. The closure of this class is closed not only with respect to the usual but also with respect to the max multiplication. Further properties analogous to those of totally positive matrices are proved and some connections to Monge matrices are mentioned.  相似文献

Ray nonsingular matrices are generalizations of sign nonsingular matrices. The problem of characterizing ray nonsingular matrices is still open. The study of the determinantal regions RA of ray pattern matrices is closely related to the study of ray nonsingular matrices. It was proved that if RA?{0} is disconnected, then it is a union of two opposite open sectors (or open rays). In this paper, we characterize those ray patterns whose determinantal regions become disconnected after deleting the origin. The characterization is based on three classes (F1), (F2) and (F3) of matrices, which can further be characterized in terms of the sets of the distinct signed transversal products of their ray patterns. Moreover, we show that in the fully indecomposable case, a matrix A is in the class (F1) (or (F2), respectively) if and only if A is ray permutation equivalent to a real SNS (or non-SNS, respectively) matrix.  相似文献

Let A be a primitive matrix of order n, and let k be an integer with 1?k?n. The kth local exponent of A, is the smallest power of A for which there are k rows with no zero entry. We have recently obtained the maximum value for the kth local exponent of doubly symmetric primitive matrices of order n with 1?k?n. In this paper, we use the graph theoretical method to give a complete characterization of those doubly symmetric primitive matrices whose kth local exponent actually attain the maximum value.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the generalized Leibniz functional matrices and study some algebraic properties of such matrices. To demonstrate applications of these properties, we derive several novel factorization forms of some well-known matrices, such as the complete symmetric polynomial matrix and the elementary symmetric polynomial matrix. In addition, by applying factorizations of the generalized Leibniz functional matrices, we redevelop the known results of factorizations of Stirling matrices of the first and second kind and the generalized Pascal matrix.  相似文献

The inertia of a Hermitian matrix is defined to be a triplet composed of the numbers of the positive, negative and zero eigenvalues of the matrix counted with multiplicities, respectively. In this paper, we show some basic formulas for inertias of 2×2 block Hermitian matrices. From these formulas, we derive various equalities and inequalities for inertias of sums, parallel sums, products of Hermitian matrices, submatrices in block Hermitian matrices, differences of outer inverses of Hermitian matrices. As applications, we derive the extremal inertias of the linear matrix expression A-BXB with respect to a variable Hermitian matrix X. In addition, we give some results on the extremal inertias of Hermitian solutions to the matrix equation AX=B, as well as the extremal inertias of a partial block Hermitian matrix.  相似文献

A partial matrix over a field F is a matrix whose entries are either elements of F or independent indeterminates. A completion of such a partial matrix is obtained by specifying values from F for the indeterminates. We determine the maximum possible number of indeterminates in a partial m×n matrix whose completions all have rank at least equal to a particular k, and we fully describe those examples in which this maximum is attained. Our main theoretical tool, which is developed in Section 2, is a duality relationship between affine spaces of matrices in which ranks are bounded below and affine spaces of matrices in which the (left or right) nullspaces of elements possess a certain covering property.  相似文献

The spectral properties of a class of tridiagonal matrices are investigated. The reconstruction of matrices of this special class from given spectral data is also studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions for that reconstruction are found. The obtained results extend some results on the direct and inverse spectral problems for periodic Jacobi matrices and for some non-self-adjoint tridiagonal matrices.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of the approximation of a matrix by matrices whose spectra are in a closed convex set of the complex plane. We explain why the Khalil and Maher characterization of an approximant, which spectrum is in a strip, is not quite correct. We prove that their characterization is valid but for another kind of approximation. We formulate a conjecture which leads to some algorithm for computing approximants. The conjecture is motivated by numerical experiments and some theoretical considerations. Separately we consider the approximation of normal matrices.  相似文献

We study graphs whose adjacency matrices have determinant equal to 1 or −1, and characterize certain subclasses of these graphs. Graphs whose adjacency matrices are totally unimodular are also characterized. For bipartite graphs having a unique perfect matching, we provide a formula for the inverse of the corresponding adjacency matrix, and address the problem of when that inverse is diagonally similar to a nonnegative matrix. Special attention is paid to the case that such a graph is unicyclic.  相似文献

In this paper, we provide some characterizations of inverse M-matrices with special zero patterns. In particular, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for k-diagonal matrices and symmetric k-diagonal matrices to be inverse M-matrices. We establish the eigenvalue interlacing property (i.e. the smallest real eigenvalue of a matrix is less than the smallest real eigenvalue of any of its principal submatrices) for the class of matrices introduced by Kotelyansky (all principal and almost principal minors of these matrices are positive). We show that certain generalizations of Kotelyansky and totally positive matrices possess this property. We also prove some interlacing inequalities for the other eigenvalues of Kotelyansky matrices.  相似文献

In this paper, we first collect a group of known characterizations of EP matrix, and give some new characterizations of EP matrices.
