The analysis described in this contribution is focused on the effect of Joule heating generation on the hydrodynamics of batch electrophoretic cells (i.e., cells that do not display a forced convective term in the motion equation). The hydrodynamics of these cells is controlled by the viscous forces and by the buoyancy force caused by the temperature gradients due to the Joule heating generation. The analysis is based on differential models that lead to analytical and/or asymptotic solutions for the temperature and velocity profiles of the cell. The results are useful in determining the characteristics of the temperature and velocity profiles inside the cell. Furthermore, the results are excellent tools to be used in the analysis of the dispersive-mixing of solute when Joule heating generation must be accounted for. The analysis is performed by identifying two sequentially coupled problems. Thus, the "carrier fluid problem" and the "solute problem" are outlined. The former is associated with all the factors affecting the velocity profile and the latter is related to the convective-diffusion aspects that control the spreading of the solute inside the cell. The analysis of this contribution is centered on the discussion of the "carrier fluid problem" only. For the boundary conditions selected in the contribution, the study leads to the derivation of an analytical temperature and a "universal" velocity profile that feature the Joule heating number. The Grashof number is a scaling factor of the actual velocity profile. Several characteristics of these profiles are studied and some numerical illustrations have been included.  相似文献

Electric fields are often used to transport fluids (by electroosmosis) and separate charged samples (by electrophoresis) in microfluidic devices. However, there exists inevitable Joule heating when electric currents are passing through electrolyte solutions. Joule heating not only increases the fluid temperature, but also produces temperature gradients in cross-stream and axial directions. These temperature effects make fluid properties non-uniform, and hence alter the applied electric potential field and the flow field. The mass species transport is also influenced. In this paper we develop an analytical model to study Joule heating effects on the transport of heat, electricity, momentum and mass species in capillary-based electrophoresis. Close-form formulae are derived for the temperature, applied electrical potential, velocity, and pressure fields at steady state, and the transient concentration field as well. Also available are the compact formulae for the electric current and the volume flow rate through the capillary. It is shown that, due to the thermal end effect, sharp temperature drops appear close to capillary ends, where sharp rises of electric field are required to meet the current continuity. In order to satisfy the mass continuity, pressure gradients have to be induced along the capillary. The resultant curved fluid velocity profile and the increase of molecular diffusion both contribute to the dispersion of samples. However, Joule heating effects enhance the sample transport velocity, reducing the analysis time in capillary electrophoretic separations.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is analysis of dispersive mixing inside a batch electrophoretic cell due to Joule heating, especially for the case of non-Newtonian carriers. To this end, a carrier fluid that follows the Eyring rheological model is used in the analysis of the species convective-diffusive equation that describes the solute motion inside the device. The hydrodynamic problem (Bosse, M. A. et al., Electrophoresis 2002, 23, 2149-2156) of the electrophoretic cell is sequentially coupled to this equation. Then, by following a procedure based on the area-averaging method, an effective diffusion coefficient is obtained. This equation is the first a priori design equation for devices such as the ones analyzed in this contribution. It is useful in determining mixing conditions for the values of the relevant parameters of the physical system. The results of this analysis are used to study the cell behavior under several conditions imposed by their main parameters. Finally, some suggestions are offered about the use of Eyring fluids as potential carriers useful for controlling dispersive mixing in batch electrophoretic cells.  相似文献

This contribution addresses the problem of solute dispersion in a free convection electrophoretic cell for the batch mode of operation, caused by the Joule heating generation. The problem is analyzed by using the two-problem approach originally proposed by Bosse and Arce (Electrophoresis 2000, 21, 1018-1025). The approach identifies the carrier fluid problem and the solute problem. This contribution is focused on the latter. The strategy uses a sequential coupling between the energy, momentum and mass conservation equations and, based on geometrical and physical assumptions for the system, leads to the derivation of analytical temperature and velocity profiles inside the cell. These results are subsequently used in the derivation of the effective dispersion coefficient for the cell by using the method of area averaging. The result shows the first design equation that relates the Joule heating effect directly to the solute dispersion in the cell. Some illustrative results are presented and discussed and their implication to the operation and design of the device is addressed. Due to the assumptions made, the equation may be viewed as an upper boundary for applications such as free flow electrophoresis.  相似文献

Joule heating is inevitable when an electric field is applied across a conducting medium. It would impose limitations on the performance of electrokinetic microfluidic devices. This article presents a 3-D mathematical model for Joule heating and its effects on the EOF and electrophoretic transport of solutes in microfluidic channels. The governing equations were numerically solved using the finite-volume method. Experiments were carried out to investigate the Joule heating associated phenomena and to verify the numerical models. A rhodamine B-based thermometry technique was employed to measure the solution temperature distributions in microfluidic channels. The microparticle image velocimetry technique was used to measure the velocity profiles of EOF under the influence of Joule heating. The numerical solutions were compared with experimental results, and reasonable agreement was found. It is found that with the presence of Joule heating, the EOF velocity deviates from its normal "plug-like" profile. The numerical simulations show that Joule heating not only accelerates the sample transport but also distorts the shape of the sample band.  相似文献

In this study we present simple analytical models that predict the temperature and pressure variations in electrokinetic-driven microchannel flow under the Joule heating effect. For temperature prediction, a simple model shows that the temperature is related to the Joule heating parameter, autothermal Joule heating parameter, external cooling parameter, Peclet number, and the channel length to channel hydraulic diameter ratio. The simple model overpredicted the thermally developed temperature compared with the full numerical simulation, but in good agreement with the experimental measurements. The factors that affect the external cooling parameters, such as the heat transfer coefficient, channel configuration, and channel material are also examined based on this simple model. Based on the mass conservation, a simple model is developed that predicts the pressure variations, including the temperature effect. An adverse pressure gradient is required to satisfy the mass conservation requirement. The temperature effect on the pressure gradient is via the temperature-dependent fluid viscosity and electroosmotic velocity.  相似文献

This paper presents the flow and heat transfer characteristics of an electrically conducting Casson fluid past an exponentially stretching curved surface with convective boundary condition. The fluid motion is assumed to be laminar and time dependent. The effects of temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, Joule heating, thermal radiation, and variable heat source/sink are deemed. Suitable transformations are considered to transform the governing partial differential equations as ordinary ones and then solved by the numerical procedures like shooting and Runge–Kutta method. Graphs are outlined to describe the influence of various dimensionless parameters on the fields of velocity and temperature and observe that there is an enhancement in the field of temperature with the radiation, temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, and irregular heat parameters. Also, the Casson parameter has a tendency to suppress the distribution of momentum but an inverse development is noticed for the curvature parameter. Attained outcomes are also compared with the existing literature in the limiting case, and good agreement is perceived.

The study of the inclined flow along with the heterogeneous/homogeneous reactions in the fluid has been widely used in many industrial and engineering applications, such as petrochemical, pharmaceutical, materials science, heat exchanger design, fluid flow through porous media, etc. The purpose of this study is to present an infinite shear rate viscosity model using the inclined Carreau fluid with nanoscale heat transport. The model considers the effect of inclined angle on the fluid’s viscosity and the transfer of heat at the nanoscale. The result shows that the viscosity of the fluid decreases by increasing the inclination angle and the coefficient of heat transfer also increases with the inclination. The model can be used to predict the viscosity and heat transfer fluid’s behavior in the inclined systems that is widely used in the industrial and engineering applications. The results provide a better understanding of the inclined flow behavior of fluids and the heat transfer at the nanoscale, which can be useful in heat exchanger design, fluid flow through porous media, etc. Greater Infinite shear rate viscosity parameter gives the higher magnitude of Carreau fluid velocity. Moreover, inclined magnetic field reduces the velocity due to Lorentz force. Two numerical schemes are used to solve the model, BVP4C and Shooting.  相似文献

Operating temperature of lithium-ion battery is an important factor influencing the performance of electric vehicles. During charging and discharging process, battery temperature varies due to internal heat generation, calling for analysis of battery heat generation rate. The generated heat consists of Joule heat and reaction heat, and both are affected by various factors, including temperature, battery aging effect, state of charge (SOC), and operation current. In this article, a series of experiments based on a power-type lithium manganese oxide/graphite battery was implemented under different conditions. The parameters for Joule heat and reaction heat are determined, and the Joule heat, reaction heat as well as total heat generation rate is detailed and analyzed considering the influence of temperature, aging, SOC, and current. In order to validate the accuracy of heat generation rate, a lumped battery heat transfer model is applied to calculate the temperature variation, and the estimated temperature variation shows good correspondence with experimental results under different currents and aging conditions. Due to its simplicity, the temperature variation estimation method is suitable for real time applications.  相似文献

We present a detailed theoretical and numerical analysis of temperature gradient focusing (TGF) via Joule heating-an analytical species concentration and separation technique relying upon the dependence of an analyte's velocity on temperature due to the temperature dependence of a buffer's ionic strength and viscosity. The governing transport equations are presented, analyzed, and implemented into a quasi-1D numerical model to predict the resulting temperature, velocity, and concentration profiles along a microchannel of varying width under an applied electric field. Numerical results show good agreement with experimental trials presented in previous work. The model is used to analyze the effects of varying certain geometrical and experimental parameters on the focusing performance of the device. Simulations also help depict the separation capability of the device, as well as the effectiveness of different buffer systems used in the technique. The analysis provides rule-of-thumb methodology for implementation of TGF into analytical systems, as well as a fundamental model applicable to any lab-on-a-chip system in which Joule heating and temperature-dependent electrokinetic transport are to be analyzed.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that Joule heating effects yield radial temperature gradients in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). The resultant parabolic profile of electrophoretic velocity of analyte molecules is believed to increase the band-broadening via Taylor-Aris dispersion. This typically insignificant contribution, however, cannot explain the decrease in separation efficiency at high electric fields. We show that the additional band-broadening due to axial temperature gradients may provide the answer. These axial temperature variations result from the change of heat transfer condition along the capillary, which is often present in CZE with thermostating. In this case, the electric field becomes nonuniform due to the temperature dependence of fluid conductivity, and hence the induced pressure gradient is brought about to meet the mass continuity. This modification of the electroosmotic flow pattern can cause significant band-broadening. An analytical model is developed to predict the band-broadening in CZE with axial temperature gradients in terms of the theoretical plate height. We find that the resultant thermal plate height can be very high and even comparable to that due to molecular diffusion. This thermal plate height is much higher than that due to radial temperature gradients alone. The analytical model explains successfully the phenomena observed in previous experiments.  相似文献

This paper presents an analytical and parameterized model for analyzing the effects of Joule heating on analyte dispersion in electrophoretic separation microchannels. We first obtain non-uniform temperature distributions in the channel resulting from Joule heating, and then determine variations in electrophoretic velocity, based on the fact that the analyte's electrophoretic mobility depends on the buffer viscosity and hence temperature. The convection-diffusion equation is then formulated and solved in terms of spatial moments of the analyte concentration. The resulting model is validated by both numerical simulations and experimental data, and holds for all mass transfer regimes, including unsteady dispersion processes that commonly occur in microchip electrophoresis. This model, which is given in terms of analytical expressions and fully parameterized with channel dimensions and material properties, applies to dispersion of analyte bands of general initial shape in straight and constant-radius-turn channels. As such, the model can be used to represent analyte dispersion in microchannels of more general shape, such as serpentine- or spiral-shaped channels.  相似文献

The authors present the results from nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations for the structural and dynamical properties of highly confined linear polymer fluids undergoing planar Poiseuille flow. They study systems confined within pores of several atomic diameters in width and investigate the dependence of the density profiles, the mean squared radius of gyration, the mean squared end-to-end distance, streaming velocity, strain rate, shear stress, and streaming angular velocity as functions of average fluid density and chain length. Their simulation results show that, sufficiently far from the walls, the radius of gyration for molecules under shear in the middle of the pore follows the power law Rg=ANbnu, where Nb is the number of bonds and the exponent has a value of 0.5 which resembles the value for a homogeneous equilibrium fluid. Under the conditions simulated, the authors find the onset of flat velocity profiles but with very little wall slippage. These flat profiles are most likely due to the restricted layering of the fluid into just one or two molecular layers for narrow pore widths compared to chain length, rather than typical plug-flow conditions. The angular velocity is shown to be proportional to half the strain rate in the pore interior when the chain length is sufficiently small compared to the pore width, consistent with the behavior for homogeneous fluids in the linear regime.  相似文献

The simulation results on viscoelastic fluid flows in sudden expansion geometry with different expansion ratios are presented. Oldroyd-B, linear Phan-Thien-Tanner (L-PTT) and Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic (FENE-P) based constitutive equations were applied in two-dimensional Cartesian coordinates. The governing equations in transient and fully developed regions were solved using open source software called OpenFOAM. The flow patterns, including velocity profiles, shear stresses and first normal stress differences in some horizontal and vertical sections are illustrated. In addition, effects of the fluid type, flow dynamics and expansion ratio on the flow and vortex patterns in transient and fully developed regions are presented and discussed. The presented results show that existences of vortices cause the inverse velocity and negative stresses in expansion regions of the channel which increase with increment of expansion ratio and Weissenberg number (We). Furthermore, some dead spaces can be observed at channel expansion regions close to the wall which are also increased. The results also show that at low We numbers all fluids show close behavior while at high We numbers the FENE-P fluid behavior shows high divergence from that of the two other fluids.  相似文献

The Joule heating induced transient temperature field and its effect on the electroosmotic flow in a capillary packed with microspheres is analyzed numerically using the control-volume-based finite difference method. The model incorporates the coupled momentum equation for the electroosmotic velocity, the energy equations for the Joule heating induced temperature distributions in both the packed column and the capillary wall, and the mass and electric current continuity equations. The temperature-dependent physical properties of the electrolyte solution are taken into consideration. The characteristics of the Joule heating induced transient development of temperature and electroosmotic flow fields are studied. Specifically, the simulation shows that the presence of Joule heating causes a noticeable axial temperature gradient in the thermal entrance region and elevates a significant temperature increment inside the microcapillary. The temperature changes in turn greatly affect the electroosmotic velocity by means of the temperature-dependent fluid viscosity, dielectric constant, and local electric field strength. Furthermore, the model predicts an induced pressure gradient to counterbalance the axial variation of the electroosmotic velocity so as to maintain the fluid mass continuity. In addition, under specific conditions, the present model is validated by comparing with the existing analytical model and experimental data from the literature.  相似文献

The multi-frequency laser interferometric method for measuring concentration profiles under electrodialysis with ion-exchange membranes including the case of small intermembrane distances and in the presence of ion-conducting spacers is developed. Experimental results obtained by laser interferometric method are in good agreement with the mathematical models of electrodialysis. The amplitude of the concentration field oscillations is shown to increase at the current density exceeding the limiting current density, and these oscillations transfer into the state of dissipative chaos. This instability is presumably a consequence of irregularly distributed heat sources, namely, the Joule heat and the heat of dissociation and recombination of water molecules.  相似文献

Considering the significance of non-Newtonian fluid usage in manufacturing such as molten plastics, polymeric materials, pulps, and so on, significant efforts have been made to investigate the phenomenon of non-Newtonian fluids. In this article the influences of heat and mass transfer on non-Newtonian Walter's B fluid flow over uppermost catalytic surface of a paraboloid is encountered. An elasticity of the fluid layer is considered in the freestream together with heat source/sink and has the tendency to cause heat flow in the fluid saturated domain. The flow problem of two-dimensional Walter's B fluid is represented using Law of conservation of mass, momentum, heat, and concentration along with thermal and solutal chemical reactive boundary conditions. The governing equations are non-linear partial differential equation and are non-dimensionalized by employing stream function and similarity transformation. The final dimensionless equations yielded are coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations. Furthermore, shooting technique along with RK-4th order method is used to get the numerical results. Graphs and tables are modeled by using MATLAB software to check the effects of Walter's B parameter, Chemical reaction parameter and Thickness parameter on temperature, velocity, and concentration profiles. Tabular analysis shows the results of some physical parameters like skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number due to the variation of Walter's B parameter, thickness parameter and chemical reactive parameter.  相似文献

In this study, experiments are carried out on the effects of magnetic fluids on the crystallization char- acterizations in a multi-component and multiphase system, which contains the liquid and the vapor of HCFC141b, water, water vapor, and gas hydrates. The mass transfer phenomena between the phase interfaces of water-HCFC141b and water-vapor are also researched. The experimental results show that in the presence of a rotary magnetic field, magnetic fluids can remarkably enhance the heat and mass transfer between phase interfaces and, therefore, improve the performance of crystallization, especially in improving the formation temperature and velocity.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the thermal performance of a flat capillary pumped loop (CPL) using the water based and the ethanol based Cu nanofluids as the working fluids under several steady sub-atmospheric operating pressures. The evaporator of the CPL was placed horizontally and heated from the bottom. The experimental results show that adding Cu nanoparticles into both base fluids can significantly enhance the evaporating heat transfer coefficient and the maximum heat removal capacity. There is an optimal mass concentration of Cu nanoparticles corresponding to the maximum heat transfer enhancement. The operating temperature or the operating temperature has an apparent effect on the heat transfer enhancement. The heat transfer enhancement effects increase distinctly with increasing the operating temperature. The heat transfer coefficient and the maximum heat removal capacity can be increased up to 45% and 16% after substituting Cu-ethanol nanofluids for the base fluids, respectively. The present investigation discovered that the thermal performance of a CPL can be evidently strengthened by using Cu nanofluids.  相似文献
