The phase behavior of aqueous mixtures of gemini surfactant hexylene-1,6-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (12-6-12) and oppositely charged polyelectrolyte sodium polyacrylate (NaPAA) has been studied experimentally. Compared to the mixtures of the traditional surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and NaPAA, the gel phase region in the 12-6-12/NaPAA solution is larger. Element analysis reveals that NaPAA in the gel phase tends to replace the counterions of surfactant micelle and to release its own counterions. Spherical aggregates are observed in either top or bottom gel phase as detected by transmission electron microscopy. The addition of sodium bromide (NaBr) leads to a decrease in the gel phase region and the occurrence of a new cream phase.  相似文献

The interaction between the alkanediyl-alpha,omega-type cationic gemini surfactant, [(C(16)H(33)N(+)(CH(3))(2)(CH(2))(4)N(+)(CH(3))(2)C(16)H(33))2Br(-)], 16-4-16 and the conventional nonionic surfactant [CH(3)(CH(2))(10)CH(2)(OCH(2)CH(2))(6)OH], C(12)E(6) in aqueous medium has been investigated. The critical micelle concentrations of different mixtures have been measured by surface tension using a du Nouy tensiometer in aqueous solution at different temperatures (303, 308, and 313 K). Maximum surface excess (Gamma(max)) and minimum area per molecule (A(min)) were evaluated from a surface tension vs log(10)C (C is concentration) plot. The cmc value of the mixture was used to compute beta(m), the interaction parameter. The beta(sigma), the interaction parameter at the monolayer air-water interface, was also calculated. We observed synergism in 16-4-16/C(12)E(6) system at all concentration ratios. The micelle aggregation number (N(agg)) has been measured using a steady state fluorescence quenching method at a total surfactant concentration approximately 2 mM at 25 degrees C. The micropolarity and the binding constant (K(sv)) of mixed systems were determined from the ratio of intensity of peaks (I(1)/I(3)) of the pyrene fluorescence emission spectrum. The micellar interiors were found to be reasonably polar. We also found, using Maeda's concept, that the chain-chain interactions are very important in this system.  相似文献

The behavior of binary mixtures composed of a nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX-100) and monomeric dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) or gemini N,N’-bis(N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl)-1,2-diammonium ethane dibromide (DDAB) cationic surfactants is studied upon micellization, wetting of Teflon and adsorption at the solution-air and solution-Teflon interfaces. The compositions of mixed micelles and adsorption layers, as well as the parameters of interaction between the surfactants (mixture components), were calculated using the Rubingh-Rosen model. For both mixtures, the interaction parameters are negative, and their absolute values increase in the following order: mixed micelles ≈ adsorption layers at the solution-air interface < adsorption layers at the solution-Teflon interface. The absolute values of the interaction parameters for TX-100-DDAB mixtures are larger than those for TX-100-DTAB mixtures. The adsorption of both mixtures on Teflon demonstrates synergistic effects. In case of TX-100-DDAB mixtures, the synergistic effects are also observed upon micellization, reduction of the surface tension, and wetting of Teflon. Original Russian Text ? O.A. Soboleva, G.A. Micellization behavior of the twin-tailed surfactants can be modulated by the addition of various modifiers. Ionic liquids (ILs) are one of them and are documented here. The beauty of these environmentally benign neoteric molecules lies in their structural versatility. Here, we have investigated the effect of three ILs: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C4mim][Br]), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C6mim][Br]), and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C8mim][Br]) on the aggregation and surface adsorption behavior of cationic gemini surfactant, bis(hexadecyldimethyl ammonium)propane dibromide (16-3-16) through experimentally measured electrical conductivities, surface tensions, and by spectral methods (UV-vis absorbance and fluorescence measurements). The main focus of the study is to observe the effect of added ILs on the critical micelle concentration (cmc), various surface parameters, aggregation number, and size of the aggregates of gemini surfactant. The results show that the more hydrophobic ILs, that is, [C6mim][Br] and [C8mim][Br] behave as electrolyte at lower concentration and cosurfactant at higher concentration, whereas moderately hydrophobic IL [C4mim][Br] acts as an electrolyte at all concentration ranges studied. The modulating effects of ILs were also compared with conventional electrolyte (NaBr) at similar conditions.  相似文献

We present the phase behavior and thermodynamics of the catanionic mixture of the gemini surfactant hexanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide), designated here as 12-6-12Br(2), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) over the full range of composition, at the water-rich corner. Visual and turbidity measurements of the mixtures provide some basic macroscopic information on phase behavior. The structure of the aggregates formed spontaneously in the mixtures has been observed with TEM. As the molar fraction of SDS, X(SDS), is increased, at constant total surfactant concentration, the aggregation morphologies change gradually from gemini-rich micelles, through multiphase regions containing a precipitate (catanionic surfactant) and a vesicle region, to SDS-rich micelles. From isothermal titration calorimetry measurements, the phase boundaries and corresponding enthalpy changes for phase transitions have been obtained. The formation of the different microstructures, in particular, the spontaneously formed vesicles in the SDS-rich side, is discussed on the basis of geometric and electrostatic effects occurring in the SDS-gemini mixture.  相似文献

Herein we report the effect of (chloride salt) electrolytes on the mixed micellization of (equimolar) a cationic gemini (dimeric) surfactant, hexanediyl-1,6-bis(dimethylcetylammonium bromide) (16-6-16), and a cationic conventional (monomeric) surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in aqueous solutions. In absence and presence of (chloride salt) MCl (where M?Li, Na, and K) electrolytes, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of mixed (16-6-16 + CTAB) surfactants was measured by surface tension measurements. With increasing the concentration of electrolyte, the CMCs were increasing. The surface properties and the thermodynamic parameters of the mixed micellar systems were also evaluated. From these evaluated thermodynamic parameters, it was found that in presence of electrolyte the stability of the mixed micellar system is more.  相似文献

Controllable aggregate transitions were realized by mixing two kinds of cationic surfactants, hexylene-1,6-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2)) and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB). It was found that two parameters are the main factors determining the aggregation behavior of the mixed system, the total concentration of DDAB and C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2) (C(T)), and the mole fraction of DDAB in the mixtures of DDAB and C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2) (X(DDAB)). How these two parameters act on the aggregate transitions was studied in detail by various measurements including surface tension, turbidity, electrical conductivity, ζ potential, isothermal titration microcalorimetry, dynamic light scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and (1)H NMR. When C(T) was constant, spontaneous vesicle-to-micelle transitions were found with decreasing X(DDAB) at high C(T). When X(DDAB) was constant, aggregate transitions were generated by gradually increasing C(T), depending on different X(DDAB) ranges. At X(DDAB) < 0.6, small spherical aggregates formed first and then transferred to vesicles, and finally the vesicles transitioned to micelles. At X(DDAB) ≥ 0.6, the progressive increase in C(T) led to aggregate transitions on the order of the arising of vesicles, the continuous growth of vesicles, the disruption of vesicles into micelles, and the final coexistence of vesicles and micelles. The hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic repulsion between DDAB and C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2) together with the related degree of ionization and hydration of the surfactants were gradually adjusted by changing the ratio and the total concentration of these two surfactants, which should be responsible for the complicated aggregation behavior.  相似文献

The phase behavior of a system of n-butanol/n-octane/water/cationic gemini surfactant, alkanediyl-alpha,omega-(dimethydodecyl-ammonium bromide)(12-n-12, n=3,4,6), has been investigated by determination the pseudo-ternary phase diagrams. The results have shown that the spacer group of gemini surfactant has a great effect on the phase behavior. The longer the spacer group for the geminis, the more similar the geminis properties to the traditional ones. The mixing content of surfactant and cosurfactant needed for forming microemulsions increases with the geminis' spacer group. The study has also shown that the shorter spacer group of geminis is favorable for the formation of higher ordered surfactant aggregates such as liquid crystals. Furthermore, the microstructures of each region for the studied systems have been investigated by electrical conductivity measurements, UV-visible absorbance spectra of pyrene probe, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). All the results are in accord with each other. DLS makes use of the sensitivity of DLS to structural changes and as expected the hydrodynamic diameter of the microemulsion droplet changes as the transformation of microemulsion microstructures take place. Moreover, the spherical and network structures of microemulsion were further verified by freezing-etching TEM.  相似文献

High polymer/surfactant weight ratios (up to about 15:1) of polystyrene microlatexes have been successfully produced by microemulsion polymerization using a small amount of polymerizable surfactant, ω-methoxypoly(ethylene oxide)40 undecyl α-methacrylate macromonomer (PEO-R-MA-40), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). After generating “seeding particles” in a ternary microemulsion containing only 0.2 wt% CTAB and 0.1 wt% styrene, the additional styrene containing less than 1 wt% PEO-R-MA-40 was added dropwise to the polymerized microemulsion for a period of about 4 h at room temperature. PEO-R-MA-40 copolymerized readily with styrene. The stable microlatexes were bluish-transparent at a lower polymer content and became bluish-opaque at a higher polymer content. Nearly monodisperse latex particles with diameters ranging from 50 to 80 nm and their molar masses ranging from 0.6 to 1.6 × 106 g/mol could be obtained by varying the polymerization conditions. The dependence of the number of particles per milliliter of microlatex, the latex particle size and the copolymer molar mass on the polymerization time is discussed in conjunction with the effect of the macromonomer concentration. The size and structure of aggregates formed by interaction of DNA with homologous series of cationic gemini surfactants butane-1,4-diyl-bis(alkyldimethylammonium bromide) (CnGS, n=10-16 is the number of alkyl carbons) were investigated using UV-vis turbidity, dynamic light scattering and small-angle synchrotron X-ray (SAX) diffraction. The detailed analysis of turbidity in the range of lambda=450-600 nm indicates an anomaly in the growth of CnGS+DNA aggregates with increasing concentration of CnGS, possibly involving changes of structure and size of aggregates. Using dynamic light scattering, changes of the effective diameter of CnGS+DNA (n=12 and 16) aggregates formed in the CnGS concentration range 0.002-0.140 mmol/l were observed. SAX diffractograms show the presence of long-range organization of CnGS+DNA (n=12, 13, 14 and 16) aggregates due to DNA interaction with CnGS above the critical micellar concentration. The CnGS+DNA (n=12, 13 and 14) aggregates at 25 degrees C are packed in a lattice of two-dimensional hexagonal symmetry. With increasing C14GS:DNA molar ratio the changes of the lattice parameter in the range of 4.80-5.27 nm are observed at 25 degrees C. The aggregates undergo structural changes induced by temperature in the range 60-95 degrees C, which are accompanied by changes of the diffraction patterns, namely in the region of reciprocal spacing s=0.15-0.30 nm(-1).  相似文献

The effect of bromide salts, MBr [M=Na, (CH3)4N, (C2H5)4N, (C4H9)4N, C8H17N(CH3)3], on the first-order rate constant, k 1, of basic hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene in micelle solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide has been studied. The main results are as follows. The molar ratio concentrations of OH, m S OH, on the micelle surface in the presence of different concentrations of Br ions, were calculated on the basis of the pseudophase ion-exchange model, and there is a linear relation between k 1 and m S OH. The relation between k 1 and the concentrations of various bromides could be presented with a single curve, and the cations of the bromides have little effect on k 1. Under the experimental conditions, there is a linear relation between 1/k 1 and the concentrations of Br; thereby a new method calculating the competition binding constant between OH and Br from dynamic data is proposed. The hydrodynamic radii of the micelles increase with the addition of bromide salts. Received: 1 August 2000 Accepted: 31 January 2001  相似文献

The aqueous two-phase system formed by the mixture of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) with a gemini surfactant O,O′-bis(sodium 2-lauricate)-p-benzenediol (C11pPHCNa) has been studied. Two two-phase regions were observed, one was a wide region in the cationic surfactant-rich side and the other in the vicinity of R = 1:1, where R is the mixing mole ratio of DTAB to C11pPHCNa in global solution. Multi-lamellar vesicles are formed in the concentrated upper phase of cationic surfactant-rich systems and spherical aggregates in the concentrated bottom phase at R = 1:1. The microstructure of the solution and the phase behavior of the aqueous two-phase system strongly depended on the total concentration and the composition of the system.  相似文献

Herein we report on the study of the interactions between alkanediyl-α,ω-type cationic dimeric (gemini) surfactant and the nonionic Triton X-100 in aqueous medium. The critical micelle concentrations of binary mixtures were determined by fluorometric study. Using the regular solution theory for the analysis of the experimental data, the attractive nature of interactions and synergistic behavior of gemini surfactant and Triton X-100 mixture were demonstrated. The micelle aggregation number was measured using steady state fluorescence quenching method. The micropolarity, binding constant and dielectric constant of mixed systems were determined from the ratio of peak’s intensity (I 1/I 3) in the pyrene fluorescence emission spectrum.  相似文献

The micellization behavior of MEGA 10 has been studied at nine different temperatures by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and thermodynamics of the process have been evaluated and examined in detail. The aggregation number of the nonionic surfactant has been estimated from the ITC results by a simulation procedure based on the mass action principle of micellization of the surfactant. The cmc of MEGA 10 has shown a minimum in temperature dependence as observed for ionic surfactants. For a comparison, the cmc and related thermodynamic parameters of an ionic surfactant, tetradecyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (C(14)TPB) studied at several temperatures in aqueous medium has been considered. The contributions of the headgroups of both the surfactants to the free energies of their respective micellization have been deciphered and presented.  相似文献

The microstructure of complexes between hydroxypropyl-cyclodextrins (HPCDs) (alpha, beta, and gamma) and a novel gemini surfactant has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). This nonionic hetero-gemini surfactant (denoted NIHG750) contains two hydrophobic groups and two hydrophilic groups. One is a methyl-capped polyoxyethylene chain with 16 oxyethylene units and the other is a secondary hydroxyl group. Various form factor models have been considered for fitting the SANS data. Spherical aggregates (25 to 40 A) with a size slightly larger than that of NIHG750 micelles (about 23 A) appear in mixed systems. These could be micellar aggregates partly covered with a few cyclodextrin molecules. In addition, the results indicate rod formation (r approximately 8 A, L approximately 70 A) for the NIHG-HPCD complexes. This result is consistent with the threading of HPCDs onto NIHG750 to such an extent that the surfactant molecule takes an extended conformation at high levels of HPCD. Also, the results indicate that HPCDs may interact with the oxyethylene groups of the spherical micellar aggregates leading to an increase in micelle size and a gradual transformation to rod-shaped aggregates. The tendency to form rods increases in the order gamma-CD相似文献

Micellar-catalyzed alkaline hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) in the presence of a conventional cationic surfactant CTAB or a cationic gemini surfactant 1,2-ethane bis(dimethyldodecylammonium bromide) (12-2-12) were studied spectrophotometrically at 25 °C. It was found that both CTAB and 12-2-12 micelles accelerated the alkaline hydrolysis of DNCB, and the binding constant of the substrate to the micelle, KS, for 12-2-12 (KS = 310 M−1) was larger than that for CTAB (85 M−1), which suggested that DNCB molecules bound with gemini micelles more easily than with CTAB. However, the second-order rate constant in micellar pseudophase (kM = 1.22 × 10−3 s−1) for 12-2-12 was lower than kM for CTAB (4.01 × 10−3 s−1) because the substrate may enter the interior of the 12-2-12 micelles. It was found also that 12-2-12 had a similar catalysis mechanism to CTAB when the concentration of 12-2-12 was relatively low (ca. <5 mM). However, above this concentration, higher microviscosity and significant increases in aggregation number and micelle size with increased surfactant concentration may remarkably influence the hydrolysis reaction.  相似文献

The adsorption of hexyl-alpha,omega-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2)) gemini surfactant on silica and its effect on wettability have been studied. The structure of the adsorbed aggregates experiences an evolving course with the increase of C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2) concentration. It is from no aggregates to circular islands, then to semicontinuous islands, and at last to the two-bilayer structure. No matter what kind of aggregates are in existence, their thickness values are to be the same 3.3+/-0.3 nm. The fraction of silica surface covered by the surfactant aggregates also varies from nearly zero at 0.05 mM to approximately 0.92 at 5.0 mM. The variation of contact angle against C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2) concentration shows two distinct regions. The upward shift indicates that the surfactant molecules are adsorbed with their hydrophobic tails facing air upon increasing concentration, while the downward shift reveals that the surfactant aggregates are in existence with the hydrophilic headgroups facing air. IR spectra suggest that two different courses are involved with the increase of the surfactant concentration. One possible course is that the surfactant tails pack more closely and orderly, and the other may be that the spacer changes from stretched profile to bended conformation upon increasing the surfactant concentration.  相似文献

The mixed micelles of cationic gemini surfactants C12C(S)C12Br2 (S=3, 6, and 12) with the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX100) have been studied by steady-state fluorescence, time-resolved fluorescence quenching, electrophoretic light scattering, and electron spin resonance. Both the surfactant composition and the spacer length are found to influence the properties of mixed micelles markedly. The total aggregation number of alkyl chains per micelle (N(T)) goes through a minimum at X(TX100)=0.8. Meanwhile, the micropolarity of the mixed micelles decreases with increasing X(TX100), while the microviscosity increases. The presence of minimum in N(T) is explained in terms of the competition of the reduction of electrostatic repulsion between headgroups of cationic gemini surfactant with the enhancement of steric repulsion between hydrophilic headgroups of TX100 caused by the addition of TX100. The variations of micropolarity and microviscosity indicate that the incorporation of TX100 to the gemini surfactants leads to a more compact and hydrophobic micellar structure. Moreover, for the C12C3C12Br2/TX100 mixed micelle containing C12C3C12Br2 with a shorter spacer, the more pronounced decrease of N(T) at X(TX100) lower than 0.8 may be attributed to the larger steric repulsion between headgroups of TX100. Meanwhile, the increase of microviscosity and the decrease of micropolarity are more marked for the C12C12C12Br2/TX100 mixed micelle, owing to the looped conformation of the longer spacer of C12C12C12Br2.  相似文献

The interaction between the polyelectrolyte gel of crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and nonionic surfactant Brij 58 based on poly(ethylene glycol) (C16H33(CH2CH2O)20OH) is studied. It is established that poly(acrylic acid)-surfactant complexes are formed. Nondissociated carboxyl groups of poly(acrylic acid) and oxygen atoms of the surfactant are involved in the complexation. Surfactant micelles are a kind of bridge that connects polymer chains. The presence of the surfactant decreases the equilibrium swelling of the hydrogel. The spin probe method is employed to determine the local mobility of the hydrocarbon core of a micelle in the complex. It was shown that the local mobility is independent of the hydrogel crosslink density and is much lower in acidic than in alkaline media. In acidic media, much more surfactant molecules of micelles are involved in the complexation than in alkaline media. However, even in alkaline media, surfactant micelles cannot leave the hydrogel, while the spin probes located in micelles are at equilibrium with the spin probes present in the external aqueous medium. The prospects for applying the considered systems as carriers for controlled release drugs are discussed.  相似文献
