Self induced second harmonic generation (SHG) accompanying 1.3 μm lasing radiation was first observed in fundamental transverse mode InGaAsP DH lasers. Sum frequency generation by two lasing longitudinal modes was observed, which has a conversion factor of four times greater than that for SHG by a single lasing longitudinal mode and predicts the simultaneous laser oscillation of the several longitudinal modes. The estimated second order nonlinear susceptibility of In0.76Ga0.24As0.55 P0.45 was about 5 × 10-20 in rotationalized MKS unit, which is at least an order of magnitude greater than that of GaAs.  相似文献

An experimental analysis on the quality of 40-GHz radio-frequency signals generated by various passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers is addressed. The analysis is performed considering the frequency linewidth of 40-GHz optically generated signals and the number of longitudinal modes selected by the cavity of each laser under study. Four of these devices are multi-quantum wells InAlGaAs Fabry-Pérot lasers. They have been engineered to exhibit a specific number of longitudinal modes: 4, 5, 10, and 22 modes, respectively. Another device under test is a bulk distributed Bragg reflector laser exhibiting 3 lasing modes. The last device under study is a quantum-dash Fabry-Pérot laser characterized by 40 lasing modes. From our experimental results it appears that, regardless the nature of the device cavity and active media, the strength of the passively mode-locked mechanism might be enhanced with the number of longitudinal modes oscillating into the laser cavity, allowing a reduction in the frequency linewidth.  相似文献

We report an experimental study of dynamic coupling of two laser diodes (LD’s) with a double phase-conjugate mirror (DPCM) in a Bi12TiO20 fiber-like crystal. After the DPCM is recorded in the crystal, one of the LD’s is switched to the multimode regime, while the other remains lasing in the single longitudinal mode. Nevertheless, the DPCM produces phase locking of the single-mode laser with one of the longitudinal modes of the multimode laser. Only the longitudinal mode survives after the transmission through the DPCM, demonstrating the coherence length recovery of the multimode laser.  相似文献

High optical quality, well end leg faceted ZnO microtetrapods with leg length between 1 and 12 μm have been grown by carbothermal chemical vapor deposition. Lasing with mode quality factors of 2500–3000 is demonstrated. The origin of laser resonator cavity is discussed as a function of the tetrapod size. It is shown that in big tetrapods with legs of 12 μm in length the laser emission lines are well explained by longitudinal Fabry–Pérot modes generated in cavities formed by individual tetrapod legs. The dispersion of the ZnO refractive index is experimentally determined from the position of lasing modes in the temperature interval from 10 to 300 K. It is shown that the lasing mode structure is seriously affected by the decrease of the tetrapod size. For a small tetrapod with a leg length of 1 μm, the lasing modes cannot be explained anymore by the formation of longitudinal Fabry–Pérot modes in separate tetrapod legs, and the generation of guided modes by multiple total internal reflections in single tetrapod legs or in pairs of legs should be taken into account. The correlations between the lasing threshold and the tetrapod size are discussed.  相似文献

The random lasing action in two-dimensional random media is investigated by simultaneously solving Maxwell’s equations and rate equations of electronic population. The random media are composed of scattering liquid crystal (LC) particles and mixed dye materials. The anisotropic scattering LC particles are arranged to be disordered in the spatial orientation of their optical axes. A parameter K = n o /n e ≤ 1 which denotes the ratio of the refractive indexes at two principal axes is defined to characterize the degree of the orientational disorder. The number of the lasing modes increases quickly with the decreasing of ratio K. In addition, the simulation of the external modulation of dielectric constant is studied. Results indicate that the spectrum intensity would be enhanced; whilst the frequencies of the lasing modes do not change significantly.  相似文献

The bandwidth of a BaTiO3 self-pumped phase conjugate mirror is measured in three different ways. 1) The crystal is exposed to infrared light with a phase change that is sinusoidal in time and the degree of phase modulation on the reflected wave is measured. As the modulation frequency is increased from 0.1 to 3 GHz, the modulation transfer function of the phase conjugate mirror decreases by a factor of 2. 2) The crystal is exposed to visible light from a laser operated both in a single longitudinal mode and in multiple longitudinal modes. When the laser bandwidth is increased from 20 MHz to 2 GHz the reflectivity of the phase conjugate mirror increases by up to a factor of 7. 3) A laser cavity is formed with the crystal as one end mirror and the lasing bandwidth is measured. Depending on the exact conditions, lasing bandwidths range from 2 to 240 GHz.  相似文献

A model to simulate the phenomenon of random lasing is presented. It couples Maxwell's equations with the rate equations of electronic population in a disordered system. Finite difference time domain methods are used to obtain the field pattern and the spectra of localized lasing modes inside the system. A critical pumping rate P(c)(r) exists for the appearance of the lasing peaks. The number of lasing modes increases with the pumping rate and the length of the system. There is a lasing mode repulsion. This property leads to a saturation of the number of modes for a given size system and a relation between the localization length xi and average mode length L(m).  相似文献

The global integro-differential rate equations describing a multimode laser are analyzed. Expressions for the relaxation oscillation frequencies and their damping rates in the single-mode and two-mode regimes are obtained without specifying either the cavity geometry or the longitudinal pump profile. On the same level of generality, we prove the existence of universal relations relating the peaks of the power spectra in the two-mode regime. For a Fabry-Perot with arbitrary longitudinal pump profile, series expansions of all the physical functions are derived in powers of the pump moments. These moments are averages of the pump profile over cavity modes at linear combinations of the lasing frequencies and their harmonics. These results apply to end-pumped and/or partially filled lasers. For a single mode Fabry-Perot laser, we prove that the contribution to the steady state intensity from the lasing mode varies from 75% close to the lasing threshold to zero at high intensity. The remainder comes from the harmonics of the lasing mode. Analyzing the steady state single mode intensity equation in terms of the pump gratings, we prove that close to the lasing threshold only the space average of the pump and its grating oscillating at twice the lasing wave number do not vanish. This provides a hint towards the justification of the usual modal rate equations which retain only these two functions in the dynamical evolution of a laser. For a Fabry-Perot with constant pump profile, an exact expression for the upper boundary of the stable single mode regime is derived. In that two-mode regime, we prove that there is a critical value of the pump at which the ratio of the two relaxation oscillation frequencies is 2, leading to an internal resonance.  相似文献

Intersubband lasing at 12-16 microm based on a CO2 laser pumped stimulated resonant Raman process in GaAs/AlGaAs three-level double-quantum-well structures is reported. The presence, or lack of, lasing action provides evidence for resonantly coupled modes of collective electronic intersubband transitions and longitudinal optical phonons. An anticrossing behavior of these modes is clearly seen when the difference between the pump and lasing energies (i.e., Stokes Raman shift) is compared with the subband separation. This work reveals the significance of the strong coupling between intersubband transitions and phonons and raises a new possibility of realizing a phonon "laser."  相似文献

We demonstrate electrically pumped large-area edge-emitting InGaAsP/InP two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers with angled facets at room temperature. The laser uses a weak index perturbation surface photonic crystal structure to control optical modes in the wafer plane. Measurements of the laser spectra show that the modal selection is due to satisfying the Bragg resonance conditions in both the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The lasing wavelength is tuned lithographically by changing photonic crystal lattice constants. We demonstrate a fine lasing wavelength tuning sensitivity (change of lasing wavelength over change of lattice constant) of 0.08 through the transverse lattice constant tuning.  相似文献

A semiconductor laser including two laterally coupled waveguides, in which one of the waveguides includes a partially reflecting surface (an internal mirror) between its facets, is analyzed. The internal mirror inserts longitudinal coupling into the system. The spectrum of the Fabry-Perot modes exhibits modulation in the gain required for lasing threshold, with a periodicity that depends on the longitudinal position of the internal mirror. The combined coupled-cavity effect may explain the observed gain spectrum in GaN lasers.  相似文献

The applicability of the concept of permittivity with Im ?gain < 0 to describe the light propagation in a metamaterial system with gain is discussed using the example of a 1D photonic crystal containing gain layers. It is shown that this approach is in agreement with the principle of causality, unless lasing is present. Though the lasing process itself requires nonlinear analysis, the lasing threshold can be determined by linear (negative loss) approximation. Connecting the onset of lasing with the passage of the transfer function pole into the upper half-plane of the complex frequency, we show that (i) if the pump frequency lies in a pass band then an increase in the number N of elementary cells will sooner or later lead to lasing; (ii) if the frequency of the pump lies in the band gap, then lasing at band gap frequencies may occur in a sample with a low N before the band gap has been formed. Nevertheless, lasing will be necessarily suppressed by a further increase in N. In any case, for sufficiently large number of layers due to a finite line width of ?gain(ω), lasing appears in the pass band even if the pump frequency is in the band gap.  相似文献

Monolithic twin-ridge laterally coupled diode lasers emitting at 1.3microm are presented that have a small-signal modulation bandwidth beyond the relaxation oscillation frequency of a single ridge. Spectra and spectrally resolved far fields are presented for three bias conditions: only one ridge lasing, both ridges lasing just above threshold, and both ridges lasing at biases well above threshold. In the first two cases the spectrum has single-peaked longitudinal modes, whereas the third cases shows splitting to in-phase and out-of-phase modes. The splitting frequency of the optical spectrum is measured to be 7.7 GHz. Small-signal modulation measurements reveal a strong resonance at 7.7 GHz, demonstrating an effect of lateral mode locking. As a result of this effect, the twin-ridge laser can be made to have a -3-dB bandwidth beyond that associated with its relaxation oscillation frequency.  相似文献

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (STBS) and phase conjugation of CO2 laser radiation have been demonstrated experimentally for the first time in compressed xenon (59 atm at 21°C) located inside the low-Q cavity of this laser. The nonlinear medium was exposed to the action of counterpropagating focused multimode radiation beams. The difference between the frequencies of the longitudinal cavity modes was set at the frequency of the acoustic wave (v s=32.2±0.3 MHz) excited as a result of STBS by 9.584 μm radiation. The duration of the radiation pulse τ L was close to the acoustic phonon lifetime (τ L<τ ph≈3× 10−6s). The excitation of STBS was manifested experimentally as the locking of longitudinal modes, an increase in power and energy, and also an increase in the duration of the lasing pulse and a reduction in the divergence to the diffraction limit. 由柱形微腔中回音壁模式满足的本征值方程,得到确定回音壁模式位置和间距的近似解析公式。以此近似解析公式,首次对直径在215~328 μm间的5个柱形微腔回音壁激光光谱做了模式标定。在用近似解析公式对柱形微腔激光光谱的数值作拟合的计算中,除了回音壁模的径向模式数(l)和角动量模式数(n)外无需其他拟合参数,解析公式的拟合值和实验激光光谱波长值间的偏差小于0.05 nm,拟合结果精确可靠。柱形微腔回音壁激光光谱模式的精确标定在模式的场分布计算以及频移型微腔生物传感器的研究应用中具有重要作用,文章介绍的方法亦可应用于柱形微腔直径和折射率的精密测量。  相似文献

Injection seeding of lasing has been achieved in both small (~20-mu; m radius) and larger (~35-mu; m radius) dye-doped microdroplets. Seeding is effective in enhancing the intensity from one lasing mode that normally occurs because of the droplet morphology. Competition between the seeded mode and unseeded lasing modes that have good spatial overlap with the seeded mode prevents lasing on some unseeded lasing modes.  相似文献

Theoretical studies have been made of the nonlinear-dynamic modes of operation of a dual-wavelength CO2 laser with continuous pumping by electric discharge and loss modulation in one of the lasing channels. It is shown that by varying the modulation depth and frequency, it is possible to control, over a fairly wide range, the time and energy parameters of lasing in both channels, going from regular to chaotic modes of operation. In this paper, the lasing action in three-dimensional active random systems has been numerically investigated. Here, random systems of spherical dielectric particles imbedded in an active medium are considered. The quasi steady state approximation for the population inversion of the active medium is applied to solve three dimensional governing equations. Results show that when the density of particles increases to an upper limit, the intensity of lasing modes is enhanced. Also, the effects of pumping rate and particle size on the number of lasing modes and their intensity are studied. Lasing threshold of laser modes in different disordered systems is calculated and it is shown that by an appropriate selection of the central frequency of gain line-shape, the output power intensity of random lasers increases. These results are in agreement with the experimental results observed by others.  相似文献

A study has been made of the effect that inert and molecular gas impurities (He, Ar, Kr, Xe, N2, CO2) have on the lasing efficiency of a Penning plasma laser operating at =585.3 nm Hel in an Ne-H2 mixture excited in a longitudinal discharge. The optimal compositions found for ternary mixtures can substantially increase the laser output parameters.
