The homogeneous alignment of a liquid crystal material, 4'-n-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (8CB), was achieved by polyimide Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Scanning electron microscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements show that the alignment of the polyimide LB films with a grooveless surface occurs due to the orientation of the polyimide chains. We directly observe 8CB monolayers on oriented polyimide LB films. We find that the monolayers form a two dimensional crystalline structure and the 8CB molecules are always aligned along the chain direction of the polyimide. The results show that the alignment of 8CB molecules arises by an epitaxial growth on the oriented polyimide LB films.  相似文献

The first single crystal structure of a Group VA halide salt with three equivalent long n-alkyl chains, benzyltrioctadecylammonium bromide (BzN18Br), is reported. It consists of alternating interdigitated and non-interdigitated regions of alkyl chains separated by ionic planes. Two chains per molecule are paired and extend to one side in a non-interdigitated region. The third chain is on the opposite side of the ionic plane and pairs intermolecularly to form an adjacent, interdigitated region. The thickness of two nearly extended molecules defines the bilayer unit-two ionic planes flanked by a region with intramolecularly paired chains and separated by an interdigitated chain region. Powder X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy data of liquid crystalline BzN18Br are consistent with an enantiotropic smectic A2 (SmA2) phase: the three n-alkyl chains of each molecule are projected from one side of an ionic plane, and head groups of neighbouring molecules are oriented head-to-head, in a non-interdigitated bilayer assembly. The structure of BzN18Br fills an important gap in our knowledge about the crystal packing of ammonium and phosphonium salts with one-four equivalent long n-alkyl chains. A comparison of their packing arrangements is made and the transitional nature of the BzN18Br structures is demonstrated. Although salts with one, two, or three long n-alkyl chains form SmA2 phases, each is distinctive in its molecular packing. A large molecular reorganization accompanies the crystal-to-liquid crystal transition of BzN18Br.  相似文献

Polyimides were prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride, 4,4'-bis[2-(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoroprop-2-yl]diphenyl ether and 4,4'-diamodiphenyl ether (PMDA-BDAF-ODA) and used for liquid crystal alignment using linearly polarized UV exposure. The alignment properties of a LC on the polyimide films were found to depend on the fluorine content in the PMDA-BDAF-ODA alignment layer and on the UV exposure time. Pretilt angles were obtained in the range 0° to 90° dependent upon the fluorine content in the polyimide film and the UV exposure time. These effects seem to be closely related to the surface energy of the photo-alignment layer.  相似文献

Several hyperbranched polyimides (HBPIs) were applied in liquid crystal (LC) alignment layers and exhibited outstanding performance for LC alignment. The maximum pretilt angle was above 8°, and the minimum pretilt angle was 4.2°. The results of atomic force microscope measurement disclosed that a lot of grooves were aligned parallel to the rubbing direction and found that the grooves were not main factor for LC alignment. The LC alignment and pretilt angles are unambiguously associated with the intrinsic HBPI chemical structures. The results of thermal gravimetric analysis and ultraviolet–visible spectra showed that the HBPIs had good thermal stability and excellent transmittance. Side-on liquid crystal polyacrylate in Langmuir-Blodgett films   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A side-on fixed liquid crystal polyacrylate has been investigated in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. High in-plane orientation of the mesogenic groups has been observed within the LB multilayers, showing the ability of the LB technique to align a liquid crystal. The analysis of the in-plane order versus the dipping speed suggests some self-aggregation of the polymer in the monolayer. Within these aggregates, the molecular orientation (in-plane and out-plane) has been deduced from infrared dichroism experiments; the mesogenic group lies mainly parallel to the dipping direction and relatively flat on the substrate. This alignment of the polymer is however partially lost with time, leading to materials with less in-plane anisotropy.  相似文献

The flow behaviours of liquid crystal droplets on polyimide alignment layers and during assembling between two substrates have been directly observed. The droplet shape became elliptical with time on the rubbed polyimide layer, where the major axis of the elliptical droplet was parallel to the rubbing direction. Rubbing enhanced the wettability between the liquid crystal and the polyimide layer. During the assembling process, the liquid crystal droplets elliptically splayed out between two substrates assembled antiparallel. The liquid crystal molecules preferentially flowed parallel to the rubbing direction in a two-step flow mode; the droplet diameter slowly increased at the first step, and then it rapidly increased at the second step. The two-step flow of the droplet proved to be due to the thickness of the droplet dependent on the rubbing strength.  相似文献

The spontaneous polarization and electro-optic response of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) were investigated in a cell fabricated with a polyimide alignment layer coated by the Langmuir-Blodgett method. The surface properties of the cured polyimide layers were monitored by contact angle measurement, and by FTIR spectroscopy and AFM for the orientation and surface roughness, respectively. The apparent spontaneous polarization of an FLC determined in a practical sandwich-cell depended on various conditions such as cell thickness, cooling rate from the smectic A to chiral smectic C phase, and deposition pressure. Electro-optic response and decay times of FLCs were also measured. Furthermore, the ions in the FLC mixture reduced the magnitude of the effective electric field, but had no effect at high frequency.  相似文献

A novel hyperbranched polyimide (HPPI) was synthesized from a new four‐functional amine and 1,2,3,4‐cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride. The polyimide with hyperbranched structure exhibited excellent alignment for nematic liquid crystal (LC) compared with traditional linear polyimides. The solution viscosities of the poly(amic acids) (PAAs) and the surface morphology of PI films were investigated using an Ubbelhode‐type viscometer and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The viscosities of the hyperbranched PAAs were much lower than that of the linear PAA solution at any monomer ratio (amine:dianhydride). Pretilt angles of LCs above 2.8° were achieved with HPPI.  相似文献

The influence of the surface treatment on the anisotropic part of the surface tension of a lyotropic discotic micellar nematic liquid crystal doped with ferrofluid is analysed. The treatment involves Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited on the glass substrates. Textural observations and phase-shift measurements of the transmitted light were carried out. A phenomenological model which allows calculation of the director average orientation in the bulk and at the surfaces is used for interpreting the experimental data. Our results show that the average director alignment depends on the concentration of the magnetic grains of ferrofluid at the glass surfaces. On the contrary, it is practically independent of the nature of the molecule deposited on the glass substrate. According to the model, the flat glass surface, independently of the treatment or the absence of any treatment, stabilizes onto itself a lamellar layer (or bilayer) formed by the amphiphilic molecules of the liquid crystal. This layer screens the effect of the LB film (or of the pure untreated substrate) on the alignment of the lyotropic nematic mesophase.  相似文献

Molecular orientation, structure, and phase transition behaviors in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and cast films of a ferroelectric liquid crystal of sec-butyl 6-(4-(nonyloxy)benzoyloxy)-2-naphthoate (FLC-1) are determined by ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. It is found that the orientation angle of chromophores theta in LB films is 41 degrees from the surface normal. The tilt angle of the chromophore changes at 56, 70, and 88 degrees C, respectively, which denotes the presence of phase transitions. Two kinds of layered or isomeric crystal structures of the LB films with layer spacings of 3 and 3.5 nm at room temperature have been found while the latter disappears above 45 degrees C, as confirmed by measurement of temperature-dependent IR spectra.  相似文献

We synthesised a series of vitamin-based and renewable tocopherol-substituted polystyrene (PTOC#, # = 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100), where # is the molar content of tocopherol moiety, using polymer analogous reactions to investigate their liquid crystal (LC) alignment properties. In general, the LC cell fabricated using the polymer film having a higher molar content of tocopherol side group showed vertical LC alignment behaviour. The vertical alignment (VA) behaviour was well correlated with the surface energy value of these polymer films. For example, VA was observed when the surface energy values of the polymer were smaller than about 35.22 mJ/m2 generated by the nonpolar tocopherol moiety having long and bulky carbon groups. Good electro-optical characteristics, such as voltage holding ratio and residual DC voltage, and aligning stabilities at 200°C and ultraviolet irradiation of 10 J/cm2 were observed for the LC cells fabricated using PTOC100 as a LC alignment layer. Therefore, it was first found that the renewable tocopherol-based materials can produce an eco-friendly vertical LC alignment system.  相似文献

Two STM investigations are presented, in which irregular tip conditions enable direct access to chemical and structural information of a surface on an atomic scale, otherwise invisible for the STM. They allow a study of surface ordering of a Pt25Ni75(111) crystal by chemical contrast between the alloy components, and a study of carbon superstructures on a Pt10Ni90(100) surface by simultaneous imaging of substrate lattice and carbon atoms. All these images were obtained at very low tunnelling resistances and thus at small tip-sample distances. A chemical interaction between the probably adsorbate covered tip and the sample is proposed to explain these images.  相似文献

A new photosensitive polyimide (PI) was successfully synthesised via esterification of PI containing hydroxyl groups with cinnamoyl chloride (CL). The cinnamate (CA) group contents of the PI was up to 90%. The PI films could induce uniform parallel alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules after the non-polarised ultraviolet ageing lamp exposure, which reduce the cost significantly compared with polarised ultraviolet light equipment. In addition, the PI exhibited good thermal stability. Meanwhile, the possible mechanism of PI alignment films induced by NPUVL was discussed in some detail.  相似文献

A series of diamines with a side chain containing rigid biphenyl unit and nonpolar alkoxy side end group [4-alkoxy-biphenol-3′,5′-diaminobenzoate] (Cm-BBDA, m = 4, 6, 12) were synthesized and their chemical structures were confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). Then three polyimides (PIs) were prepared by copolymerization of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 4,4′-methylenedianiline (MDA) and Cm-BBDA in N-methyl-2-pyrrolodone (NMP), and chemical structures of all PIs were confirmed by FT-IR. Structural identification of all poly(amic acid)s (PAA) was performed by 1H NMR. Liquid crystal (LC) cells were fabricated using these PIs as the alignment layer for characterization of the alignment properties of LCs. It was found that the planar alignment was obtained when PI with side chain containing alkoxy side end group of 4 carbon atoms was employed and the vertical alignment was observed when alkoxy side end groups of 6 or 12 carbon atoms were included. A uniform vertical alignment was validated by polarizing microscopy. It was testified that LC vertical alignment possessed high thermal stability.  相似文献

Calixarene molecules consisting of four or six moieties and different substituents (acyl and azobenzene groups) were synthesized. Films of such molecules were deposited using a Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto glass plates and were characterized using atomic force microscopy. These treated plates were used to prepare liquid crystal cells, and the overall alignment studied. In the case of photosensitive molecules, photoinduced reorientation experiments were undertaken and are reported. It is shown that it is not important to have a large number of interacting sites on the surface to induce a reorientation of the liquid crystal.  相似文献

X-ray reflectivity studies on Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer films of side-chain liquid crystal polymers are reported. The films have a high degree of lamellar order. The layer periodicity is independent of the type of monolayer deposition, implying a reorientation of the side group mesogens following the deposition process. X-ray reflectivity from thin films displays subsidiary maxima permitting a quantitative measure of the change in side-chain density between multilayer and monolayer. A unit cell density profile is calculated for thick films assuming a symmetric unit cell.  相似文献

The surface topography of Ag films and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from benzene on Ag films have been simultaneously recorded. The Ag films were formed by vacuum deposition at temperatures ranging from 100 K to 500 K. Analysis of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images shows that films formed below 250 K are fractal structures with Hausdorff-Besicovitch dimension 2.55 < D < 2.72, while for those formed above 250 K, D≈2. The lower temperature, rough films exhibit strong surface enhanced Raman scattering but the higher temperature, smooth films do not. We consider the consequences of fractal character and the possible correlation between this and the SERS activity of these films.  相似文献

The rubbing of polymer-coated substrates is one of the most frequently used techniques for liquid crystal alignment. However, the aligning mechanisms are not completely understood. The influence of friction charges induced by the rubbing process has been taken into account in theoretical publications. In this work we investigate the rubbing-induced charge domains of three polymers (PMMA, PI and PVA) with the electrostatic force microscopy technique, which allows the simultaneous determination of the surface topography and electrostatic potential. We observed a large intensity of the potential for the PMMA substrate, whereas no charge domains were observed for PVA. In addition, we followed the time evolution of the surface charge domains, and surprisingly after five days the charges were still present with a small reduction of intesity. Using polarizing optical microscopy we studied the influence of the charge domains on the LC aligning properties.  相似文献
