Abstract

The temperature and frequency dependences of the complex dielectric susceptibility of a ferroelectric liquid crystal near the smectic C*-smectic A phase transition have been calculated using the classical and generalized Landau models. It is shown that although the dielectric response of the S*C phase consists generally of four modes (soft, Goldstone, and two high frequency polarization modes) only three bands appear in the dielectric loss spectrum of ferroelectric liquid crystals at the SA–S*C phase transition. These results are in agreement with recent experimental data.  相似文献

Abstract

Broadband dielectric measurements on a multicomponent ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture have been performed. The alignment was homeotropic and the cell and sample holder were the same in the whole frequency range. Two relaxation processes have been observed in all liquid crystal phases with shapes given by the Havriliak-Negami and inverted Havriliak-Negami functions. Strengths and frequencies of both modes have been obtained for the different phases. The values of the latter and their activation energies allowed us to assign the low and high frequency mechanism to the molecular reorientation around the transversal axis and around the longitudinal axis, respectively. The behaviour of this high frequency mode does not show any jump in the SA-S*c phase transition, neither in the amplitude nor in the frequency, indicating that the appearance of the spontaneous polarization in the S*c phase is not the consequence of the freezing of this mode.  相似文献

An achiral swallow-tailed material, 2-propylpentyl 4-(4′-decyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)benzoate, p, showing SmA and SmCalt phases was prepared for mixing (by weight percentage) with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-MHPOBC, m, for the study. The binary mixture p/15/m85 using (S)-MHPOBC (85%) as a host doped with achiral material (15%) resulted in a phase sequence SmA-SmC*-SmC*A. The electro-optic response of this mixture in the ferroelectric SmC* phase displayed V-shaped switching, while that in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase displayed a double hysteresis switching. The mixture p85/m15 possessed SmA* and SmC*A phases; V-shaped switching was found in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase of this mixture. These optical phenomena implied that a binary mixture containing a larger amount of achiral swallow-tailed material and/or possessing relatively lower polarization favours the occurrence of V-shaped switching in the antiferroelectric phase. The results of this work also suggested that thresholdless V-shaped switching in chiral smectic liquid crystals can be achieved by mixing an achiral swallow-tailed material with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal.  相似文献

Compounds with differing numbers of lactate units in the chiral part were synthesized. For all materials, at least two smectic phases were found. In addition to the SmA, the SmC* and/or the tilted hexatic SmI*(F*) phase appear according to the length of the non-chiral alkyl chain. For the shortest non-chiral chain, a direct transition from the SmA phase to the SmI*(F*) phase has been discovered and studied. For compounds with the 2-(S)-methylbutyl alkyl chain and two lactate units in the chiral part the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase occurs. The ferroelectric character of the hexatic phase has been confirmed even just below the SmC*A phase.  相似文献

The thermodynamic characteristics of sorption of n-alkanes, arenes, aldehydes, monoatomic alcohols, and optical isomers of camphene and butanediol-2,3 by a chiral smectic liquid crystal, 2-methylbutyl ester of 4-(4-decyloxybenzylideneamino)-cinnamic acid, from the gas phase were studied over the temperature range including the S*C and S*A mesophases and isotropic phase. The standard and excess thermodynamic functions of sorption were determined for 26 sorbates of the classes of substances specified. The S*C and S*A mesophases exhibited selectivity with respect to the separation of para and meta xylenes (α p/m = 1.06–1.07, 90–108°C) and pronounced enantioselectivity (αR/S = 1.05–1.09, 87–108°C). The helically twisted structure of the smectic liquid crystal was shown to play an important role in the mechanism of the chiral recognition of optical isomers of polar and low-polarity compounds under gas-liquid chromatography conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

We have observed the diffusion constants of a dye in several liquid crystals by forced Rayleigh scattering. In a liquid crystal which has a standard phase sequence of N-SA-SC, the diffusion anisotropy changes at the N-SA phase transition and increases with decreasing temperature in SA and SC phases. The diffusion constants exhibit a rather smooth decrease with decreasing temperature except an anomaly at the SA-Sc phase transition. In a liquid crystal which has the antiferroelectric SCA phase, however, the diffusion constants show discontinuous increase and decrease at the SA-Sc and the Sc-ScA phase transition temperatures, respectively: the diffusion constant in SC is larger than that in the higher temperature SA phase. Anomalous signal increase and profile were observed at the phase transition temperatures, and were ascribed to the complementary transient grating due to the coexistence of two phases.  相似文献

Abstract

A new chiral alcohol, 2(S)-[2(S)-methylbutyloxy]propanol (3), containing two chiral centres has been synthesized from ethyl lactate and (S)-1-iodo-2-methylbutane. It was used as a chiral building block for the preparation of ferroelectric liquid crystal materials. Several of the new materials exhibit an enantiotropic S*c phase with a wide temperature range. The results indicate that the molecular structure of 3 is useful for synthesizing ferroelectric liquid crystal materials.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals derived from (S)‐2‐(6‐methoxy‐2‐naphthyl)propionic acid, with non‐fluorinated or semi‐perfluorinated alkanes positioned at a chiral terminal chain, have been synthesized and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and electro‐optical measurements. The non‐fluorinated compounds, 1‐hexyl (S)‐2‐{6‐[4‐(4‐alkanoyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy]‐2‐napthyl}propionates exhibit rich mesomorphism—the BPII, N*, TGBA*, SmA* and SmC* phases. The fluorinated compounds display only the SmA* and SmC* phases, suggesting that the fluorination promotes the formation of smectic phases. In addition, the SmA* and SmC* phases of the fluorinated compounds have enhanced thermal stability as compared with the corresponding phases of the non‐fluorinated compounds. The spontaneous polarization (P s values) for the non‐fluorinated compounds are higher than those of the fluorinated compounds at any reduced temperature below the SmA*–SmC* transition. The electro‐optical responses measured for these compounds in the ferroelectric phase displayed thresholdless, V‐shaped switching.  相似文献

A secondary chiral (R)-(?)-2-alcohol underwent the Mitsunobu reaction with triphenylphosphine, diethyl azodicarboxylate and ethyl 4-hydroxybiphenylcarboxylate, resulting in the desired (S)-(+)-product with high enantiomeric purity (>99% ee), with the chiral branched chain attached to the biphenyl. This method is operationally simple and provides the very important chiral precursor in good yields (62% in dry THF and 72% in dry Et2O). The condensation of the (S)-(+)-acid chloride from this material and a suitable 4-n-alkylthiophenol in toluene in the presence of pyridine or triethylamine furnishes the chiral (S)-(+)-thiobenzoate liquid crystals in good yields (80–83% in pyridine and 65–68% in Et3N). (S)-(+)-4-(1-Methylheptyloxy)biphenyl 4-alkylthiobenzoates are abbreviated (S)-MHOBSn , where n varies from 4 to 10 and denotes the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. DSC, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the (S)-MHOBSn series possesses a rich phase polymorphism: two highly ordered tilted phases CrG* and SmI*, as well as the ferroelectric smectic C (SmC*) and chiral nematic (N*) phase. In this series, the seldom observed transition between the chiral phases SmI*–SmC* is seen. All the compounds possess stable enantiotropic SmC* and N* phases. The existence of weak intermolecular hydrogen-bonding in (S)-MHOBSn was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy.  相似文献

Abstract

The non-linear dielectric relaxation spectroscopy has been recently developed and applied to soft materials such as polymers. We have applied this new method to the S*C phases of some ferroelectric liquid crystals. Under a weak AC electric field, the original and third order harmonic frequency components of electric displacement are proportional to the first and third powers of the applied electric field, respectively. The linear spectrum obtained from the original frequency component shows the relaxation of Debye type and the third order non-linear spectrum shows the relaxation with an extended form of Debye type to the non-linear case. The third order non-linear dielectric increment is found to be negative, which implies that the dielectric non-linearity of the liquid crystal in the S*C phase is due to the saturation of molecular dipole moments induced by the applied electric field. The temperature dependence of the linear and third order non-linear spectra in the S*C phase are also studied. Both spectra do not change their forms much through the whole temperature range of the S*C phase. In the vicinity of the SA–S*C transition temperature, the critical behaviour is more remarkable in the third order spectrum than in the linear one.  相似文献

The characteristic dielectric behaviour of ferroelectric liquid crystals with a large spontaneous polarization has been studied as functions of the D.C. bias field, frequency, cell thickness and applied pressure. Under the condition in which the contribution of the Goldstone mode is suppressed, a sharp peak in the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant is clearly observed at the transition between SA and S*C phases T S C *s A. The relaxation of the soft mode is observed both in the SA and S*C phases by eliminating the contribution of the Goldstone mode under a D.C. bias field. Another relaxation is also observed in the S*C phase around several kHz in addition to that of the soft mode and the Goldstone mode. The pressure effect on the soft mode was also studied.  相似文献

A new ferroelectric liquid crystal, 1-ethylpropyl (S)-2-[2-fluoro-4-(4′-decyloxybiphenylcarbonyloxy) benzoyloxy] propanoate, F, was synthesized and mixed with an achiral swallow-tailed material, 2-propylpentyl 4-(4′-nonyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy) benzoate,P, for the preparation of binary mixtures for the study. The binary mixtures gave a phase sequence SmA* -SmC* -SmX*. The electro-optic response of the mixtures in the ferroelectric SmC* phase was investigated. V-shaped switching was observed as the amount of the achiral swallow-tailed material became greater than 20 wt %. This result suggests that thresholdless, V-shaped switching in ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures can be achieved by mixing a ferroelectric liquid crystal with an achiral swallow-tailed compound.  相似文献

The synthesis and properties of a series of new ferroelectric liquid crystal side-chain polymers with the same mesogenic side group but different polymer backbones (polyacrylate, polymethacrylate and polysiloxanes) are described. The polymorphism is studied by optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. All the monomers exhibit at least an SA and a ferroelectric S*C phase, as the polymethacrylate and the copolysiloxane. These two polymers and the polyacrylate exhibit also an S*F phase. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The fluorinated compound, (S)-4′′-(6-perfluoropentanoyoxyhexyl-1-oxy)-2′,3′-difluoro-4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-[1,1′:4′,1′′]-terphenyl, which exhibits antiferroelectric SmCA*, ferroelectric SmC* and paraelectric SmA* phases, has been investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and frequency-dependent dielectric spectroscopy methods. X-ray studies have revealed that the layer thickness remains almost constant in the SmA* phase but within the SmC* and SmCA* phases it decreases with decreasing temperature, a step jump being observed only at the SmA*–SmC* transition. The tilt angle in the SmCA* phase decreases from 22.2° to 19.5°, and in the SmC* phase it decreases from 18.8° to 5.5°. Spontaneous polarisation is found to be quite high and varies between 74.1 and 118.7 nC cm?2. The variation in ε′ and ε′′ with temperature shows a discontinuous change at the transition temperatures. Goldstone mode relaxation is only observed in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases and is found to be of the Cole–Cole type. The soft mode is observed on application of a bias field near the SmC*–SmA* transition. Neither the soft mode nor the anti-phase azimuthal angle fluctuation mode is observed in SmCA*. Rotational viscosity decreases quite rapidly with temperature but in a different manner in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases. Activation energy for this process is found to be 48.14 kJ mol?1 in the SmC* phase.  相似文献

Abstract

The results of optical activity measurements on the smectic A* phase of 1-methylheptyl 4′-[(4-n-tetradecyloxyphenyl)proprioloyloxy]biphenyl-4-carboxylate (14P1M7) and the chiral nematic phase of a chiral–racemic mixture of S-4-(2-methylbutyl)phenyl 4-decyloxybenzoate (CE6) are shown to be extremely similar. This is in full agreement with the proposed model of the A* phase as a twistgrain-boundary (TGB) phase. In addition, new light scattering measurements using circularly polarized light in a back-scattering geometry yield information on the fluctuations in the isotropic phase. Unlike in chiral nematics where only one structural mode is affected, the data show a strong deviation from the normal temperature dependence near the isotropic–smectic A* transition for two structural modes. Possible reasons for this behaviour in highly chiral smectic liquid crystals are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Here the influence of the free surface on both a thick (semi-infinite) layer and a thin freely suspended film of a polar liquid crystal is investigated. It is shown that within the temperature range of the monolayer smectic A phase (SA1 ) the interaction between polar molecules and the free surface of the liquid crystal gives rise to a bilayer smectic A, a structure with long range antiferroelectric order (SA2 ) in the surface region of the semi-infinite layer. The dependence of the bilayer smectic order parameter on the strength of the interaction between the constituent molecules and the free surface as well as temperature and the distance to the free surface are determined. Sufficiently far from the SA1 -SA2 transition the latter dependence has an exponential character and the depth of the SA2 phase penetration into bulk liquid crystal is equal to the longitudinal correlation length for the bilayer smectic A structure fluctuations in the SA1 phase. However, near the SA1 -SA2 transition the bilayer smectic order parameter decays non-exponentially and more rapidly with increasing distance to the free surface. In addition, it is found that the bilayer SA2 phase can form several smectic layers at the free surface of a semi-infinite polar liquid crystal layer with the SA1 phase. Finally, it is shown that in a freely suspended film the free surface-induced SA2 phase can completely occupy the volume of the sample. Hence in a freely suspended polar liquid crystal film the SA1 -SA2 transition occurs with decreasing film thickness.  相似文献

Abstract

Seventeen esters, derived from 4-n-alkoxy-3-fluorophenols and 4-(5-n-alkyl-2-thienyl)benzoic acids, have been prepared and their liquid crystal transition temperatures determined by thermal optical microscopy. On cooling the isotropic liquid, the SA-SC-SA sequence of phases reported for the octyloxy-octyl and octyloxy-nonyl esters has been observed for certain other homologues, principally members of the 4-(5-n-nonyl-2-thienyl)benzoates. For these compounds, the temperature range of occurrence of the intermediate SC phase decreases as the length of the alkoxy chain increases (for the hexyloxy-nonyl to dodecyloxy-nonyl esters) and the Sc phase is absent for the tetradecyloxy-nonyl homologue.  相似文献

Abstract

It is shown that the McMillan parameter M = T SAN/T N1 (where T SAN and T NI are respectively the temperatures of the smectic A to nematic (SAN) and the nematic to isotropic (NI) phase transitions) is useful in analysing the crossover between second and first order behaviour of the SNN transition in the nO.m homologous liquid crystal series (the 4-n-alkoxybenzylidene-4′-n-alkylanilines). Using a phase diagram of orientational ordering versus M for this series, as obtained in this work (from E.S.R. and D.S.C), a symmetric tricritical point with mean field exponent β2 = 1 is demonstrated. In a preliminary study of E.S.R. linewidth parameters B and C of nitroxide spin probes dissolved in members of the nO.m series exhibiting a first order SAN transition, critical-type divergences are observed near this transition. In the case where M is closer to 0.959 (the value at the tricritical point), these divergences appear similar to those previously observed in related nO.m members with a second order SAN transition; however, they are considerably enhanced for an M value closer to unity (i.e. more removed from the tricritical point). This indicates the importance of coupling between orientational and positional order parameters in the observed critical-type divergences.  相似文献

Abstract

Coloured ferroelectric liquid-crystalline side chain copolymers containing 5 per cent and 15 per cent of an azo dye were synthesized and characterized by DSC, GPC and optical microscopy. Order parameters, S, of the azo compound exceeding 0·8 were measured in the frozen smectic phase for the 5 per cent copolymer. The copolymers exhibit fast electrooptic switching in the range of a few hundred microseconds to milliseconds in the Sc* phase. Both linear (i.e. electroclinic-like) and ferroelectric switching have been observed. Tilt angles of ~19° and spontaneous polarization of ~300nC cm?2 have been recorded in the Sc* phase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A homologous series of new chiral liquid crystal compounds, MnBEB (n = 4–10), was prepared by covalently linking a chiral (–)-menthyl with biphenyl-benzoate via a dicarboxylic spacer of varying length and parity. A combination of analysis methods, such as FT-IR, 1H NMR spectra, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarised optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction was carried out to systematically investigate their phase structures and phase transition behaviours. The length and parity of the flexible spacers has a profound influence on the Tm and Tc and a modest odd-even effect is observed for the chiral liquid crystal compounds MnBEB. Only compound M4BEB developed an N* phase with selectively reflection on heating and a blue phase on cooling process. In addition, increasing the length of the flexible spacers tends to narrow the temperature range of the N* phase and widen the smectic phase, moreover, the pitch becomes longer with the spacer increases.  相似文献
