Abstract

The continuum equations of Leslie et al. [1] for smectic C, and the extension of this theory for chiral smectic C* [2], are applied to problems involving simple planar layer configurations which accommodate uniform layer thickness constraints. The chiral smectic C*M and non-chiral smectic CM [3] are considered as either biaxial smectic A phases or antiferroelectric smectic C phases and are therefore included as interesting degenerate cases of the smectic C* and C phases, respectively. The effects of static and time dependent magnetic fields on these materials are compared with related deformations occurring in nematics [4] and cholesterics [5,6]. Their reaction to applied shears is also investigated yielding examples of flow alignment, induced secondary flows and unwinding of the chiral helix and testing the validity of enforcing a constant layer thickness.  相似文献

We propose a simple phenomenological model which is able to account for the various twist grain boundary (TGB) phases, including the recently discovered undulating twist grain boundary-C* (UTGBC*) phase. In the UTGBC* phase, the smectic C* (SmC*)-like blocks and the grain boundaries separating them undulate to form a two-dimensional square lattice perpendicular to the TGB helix axis. We treat the grain boundaries separating adjacent smectic blocks as interfaces with an anisotropic interfacial tension. At moderate chiral strengths we find a TGBA-TGBC-SmC* sequence. As the chiral strength is increased this goes to the sequence TGBA-UTGBC*-SmC*. Such sequences have been observed experimentally.  相似文献

Three series of copolymers were prepared from 4-[2-(S)-methyl-3-acryloxy)-4′-methoxy phenyl] benzoate, as the common chiral monomer, and three nonchiral 4-alkyloxy phenyl-4′-(6-acryloxy hexyloxy) benzoates with alkyloxy tail groups containing seven to nine atoms. All of the copolymers exhibited liquid crystalline (LC) behavior over the entire composition ranges studied. It was demonstrated that by changing the length of the alkyloxy unit, significant differences could be induced in the LC phases observed. When the alkyloxy unit was seven atoms long only chiral nematic (N*) phases were detected, whereas lengthening the alkyloxy unit to eight and nine atoms led to the formation of smectic A (SA) and chiral smectic C (S*C ) phases in addition to the N* phase. Films of these materials exhibited selective reflection in the visible region as one would expect from the presence of N* and S*C phases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Measurements of the complex dielectric permittivity in the frequency range 30 Hz-13MHz have been made for the chiral smectic C and smectic A phases of the mixture ZLI-3654. In the S*C phase a large contribution to the electric permittivity coming from the Goldstone mode was found. For the pretransitional region S*C-SA, only the soft mode has been detected. It is found that the molecular relaxation originating from the reorientation around the short axis is well separated from the soft mode even in the pretransitional region. The influence of different relaxation modes on the dielectric anisotropy is presented.  相似文献

Here we present and analyse N.M.R. measurements of the Larmor frequency dependence (dispersion) of the longitudinal proton spin relaxation time, T 1(v), for two chiral ferroelectric mesogens (Merck IS-1912 and DOBAMBC) in the isotropic, smectic A and smectic C* phases, making use of fast field cycling techniques. Although in the low frequency range the relaxation times of IS-1912 are much shorter than those of DOBAMBC, the form of the dispersion profiles is not basically different for the two materials. This reveals contributions by smectic order fluctuations, self-diffusion and molecular rotations. The order fluctuation term, which means relaxation by collective molecular reorientations, is clearly seen by characteristic dispersion profiles in the kHz regime (T 1v 1 or T 1v 1/2), which disappear in the isotropic phase. Our results do not indicate significant dissimilarities between the main relaxation processes in the SC and S*C mesophases.  相似文献

Two series of new liquid crystalline lactic acid derivatives with a terminal ester group have been synthesised. The effect of this ester unit and the length of its alkyl chain on the mesomorphic and dielectric properties of the compounds exhibiting a broad temperature range of chiral smectic phases have been studied. We found that the mesomorphic behaviour and phase transition temperatures are strongly affected by the molecular architecture. Depending on the alkyl chain length in the terminal ester unit, the studied materials exhibited paraelectric smectic A*, ferroelectric tilted smectic C* and antiferroelectric smectic CA* phases over a broad temperature range. The physical properties of the compounds have been studied by optical polarising microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, electro-optic measurements, small-angle X-ray scattering and dielectric spectroscopy. Furthermore, the homologues with short terminal alkyl chains showed a very small layer shrinkage at the transition from the orthogonal SmA* to the tilted SmC* phase, which is a characteristic feature of ‘de Vries-type’ behaviour.  相似文献

Abstract

Hydrogen-bonded dimers of 4-alkoxy-4′-stilbazole homologues (C n OSB, proton acceptors) and the mono-(2-methylbutyl)ester of terephthalic acid (MBTA, proton donor) behaved like conventional thermotropic mesogens. For chiral MBTA mixtures, chiral nematic and blue phases were observed with n = 1 and 2, and chiral smectic C phases were observed with n ≥ 5. Achiral phases were observed for mixtures with racemic MBTA as proton donor. Transition temperatures and enthalpies are similar for the chiral and achiral systems.  相似文献

We have investigated the viscoelastic behaviour exhibited by chiral smectic C* phases in homeotropic orientation. For an appropriate scattering geometry and using the light scattering technique, the orientational diffusivities associated with the Goldsone mode in ferro- and antiferroelectric phases of C11thiobenzoate and C8tolane compounds have been measured. (SmCA*) is about 100 times weaker than (SmC*). This divergence may be largely attributed to the mode of the molecular arrangement in ferro- and antiferroelectric phases, in spite of the same helical structure observed in the two phases.  相似文献

Abstract

We present a detailed study of selective reflection from free-standing films of chiral smectic phases. Free-standing films are drawn of the chiral compound 2-(4-hexyloxyphenyl)-5-[4-(1-chloro-3-methylbutanoyloxy)phenyl]pyrimidine (2f-6) possessing a chiral smectic C and the recently discovered chiral smectic M phase, both phases showing the phenomenon of selective reflection of visible light in a certain temperature range. With linearly polarized incident light two selective reflection maxima are observed which are caused by the presence of π-walls in the film. The wavelength of the selective reflection maxima is independent of the film thickness, whereas the intensity decreases with decreasing film thickness. The dependence of the reflection maxima on temperature and enantiomeric excess is studied.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

New liquid crystals categorised as cholesteryl dimers have been successfully synthesised through the reaction between cholesteryl 4-(prop-2-ynyloxy)benzoate moieties with n-azido(cholesteryloxy-carbonyl)alkane. All the dimers display enantiotropic mesophases. Whilst the odd-numbered dimers exhibit chiral nematic (N*), twisted grain boundary (TGB) and chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases, the even-numbered members from the same series show chiral smectic A and C. A detailed inspection on mesophase reveals that the chiral centres and the bent conformation of the odd-numbered members are essential for the induction of TGB phase. However, upon decreasing the temperature, the ratio of the transition temperatures (TSmC*-SmA*/TSmA*-I) is found to be 0.95, which indicate the second order transition according to the McMillan’s molecular theory. In addition, the X-ray diffraction study supports the presence of the smectic A phase on the even members rather than the N* by the appearance of the Bragg diffraction peaks at 190°C. A comparison study with the other analogues in which the cholesterol entity is substituted by azobenzene or biphenyl tails has been carried out to assess the relationship between the molecular structure and mesomorphic behaviour.  相似文献

The thermodynamic characteristics of sorption of n-alkanes, arenes, aldehydes, monoatomic alcohols, and optical isomers of camphene and butanediol-2,3 by a chiral smectic liquid crystal, 2-methylbutyl ester of 4-(4-decyloxybenzylideneamino)-cinnamic acid, from the gas phase were studied over the temperature range including the S*C and S*A mesophases and isotropic phase. The standard and excess thermodynamic functions of sorption were determined for 26 sorbates of the classes of substances specified. The S*C and S*A mesophases exhibited selectivity with respect to the separation of para and meta xylenes (α p/m = 1.06–1.07, 90–108°C) and pronounced enantioselectivity (αR/S = 1.05–1.09, 87–108°C). The helically twisted structure of the smectic liquid crystal was shown to play an important role in the mechanism of the chiral recognition of optical isomers of polar and low-polarity compounds under gas-liquid chromatography conditions.  相似文献

Among unsymmetric oligomesogens, chiral dimers formed by connecting a cholesteryl ester fragment with various aromatic mesogenic cores through a polymethylene spacer have been attracting much attention due to their remarkable thermal behaviour. In particular, dimers containing a diphenylacetylene segment having an alkoxy chain have shown interesting mesomorphic behaviour. In view of this a new series of unsymmetric dimers consisting of a diphenylacetylene moiety having an alkyl chain and a cholesteryl ester unit joined through a paraffinic spacer have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties characterized. The lengths of the central methylene spacer (C3, C4, C5 and C7) as well as that of the alkyl chain (n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl) have been varied to establish structure–property relationships. These investigations have revealed that all the dimers exhibit smectic A, twist grain boundary and chiral neamtic (N*) phases with the exception of one of the dimers for which only the N* phase was observed. Some differences in the mesomorphic properties of the unsymmetric dimers containing odd or even parity methylene spacers have been observed. The majority of dimers having an even (C4) parity paraffinic spacer show a blue phase while the dimers with odd (C3, C5 and C7) parity spacers exhibit the chiral smectic (SmC*) phase. In some cases, the SmC* phase exists well below (?60°C) and above room temperature.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A series of symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers with the same chiral core (S)-1-phenylethane-1,2-diol ((S)-PE) have been synthesised, termed TBDA-(S)-PE, 3F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE, 1F3B-(S)-PE, 1F2B-(S)-PE, respectively. Chemical structures and LC properties of the five symmetric LC dimers were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrometer (1H NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarised optical microscopy (POM). TBDA-(S)-PE displayed enantiotropic chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase while 3F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE, 1F2B-(S)-PE all displayed enantiotropic chiral nematic (N*) phase and 1F3B-(S)-PE displayed monotropic N* phase. The results indicated that the removal of the flexible spacers between the rigid mesogenic arm and the chiral core facilitated the formation of the N* phase. When the rigid mesogenic units are connected to the chiral core directly, the structure of the terminal fluorine group and the rigidity of the mesogenic unit played certain influence on the thermal properties of the LC dimers, but did not change the type of mesomorphic phase. Compared to 3F3B-(S)-PE and 1F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE and 1F2B-(S)-PE displayed wider LC ranges, respectively, suggesting molecular regularity had greater influence on LC-isotropic (I) transition temperature.  相似文献

The electro-optic and complex dielectric behaviour of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4′-(n-butanoyloxyprop-1-oxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate, having chiral SmCA* and hexatic smectic phases, have been investigated. Complex dielectric permittivities were measured as a function of frequency, d.c. bias field and temperature. Spontaneous polarization was measured by the current reversal technique; tilt angle was measured under a polarizing microscope using a low frequency electric field. The electro-optic properties and dielectric behaviour of the material are compared with results obtained by DSC and polarizing optical microscopy. Dielectric relaxation processes in SmCA* and hexatic smectic phases were determined. The dielectric strength at the SmCA* to hexatic smectic phase transition is discussed in terms of coupling between the long range bond orientational order and smectic C director. It seems from the results of spontaneous polarization and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy that the material might possess an additional phase between the SmCA* and hexatic smectic I* phases.  相似文献

Compounds with differing numbers of lactate units in the chiral part were synthesized. For all materials, at least two smectic phases were found. In addition to the SmA, the SmC* and/or the tilted hexatic SmI*(F*) phase appear according to the length of the non-chiral alkyl chain. For the shortest non-chiral chain, a direct transition from the SmA phase to the SmI*(F*) phase has been discovered and studied. For compounds with the 2-(S)-methylbutyl alkyl chain and two lactate units in the chiral part the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase occurs. The ferroelectric character of the hexatic phase has been confirmed even just below the SmC*A phase.  相似文献

Abstract

Induced S*C phases can be obtained by dissolving chiral dopants in achiral SC host phases. If the chiral guest molecules bear a transverse dipole, ferroelectricity will occur. The novel dopants under discussion are characterized by chiral centres and the transverse dipole situated not in the alkyl end groups of the mesogenic molecules, but directly in their rigid cores. As a rigid core, analogues of decalin were used. In those dopants, rotation around the molecular long axis is sterically restricted. According to the microscopic model of Zeks, this leads to enhanced values of the spontaneous polarization P s. The magnitude as well as the sign of the spontaneous polarization P s of the S*C phases induced by the novel dopants in different host phases has been investigated. It has been found for the first time that for a given dopant, the polarization as well as the sign of P s depends on the structure of the host phase. The results are discussed in terms of two microscopic models. They can be understood taking into account the situation that the potential of the restricted long axial rotation is determined by the hard core interactions of the molecules involved or that an orientation of the host dipoles by a guest/host interaction takes place.  相似文献

A secondary chiral (R)-(?)-2-alcohol underwent the Mitsunobu reaction with triphenylphosphine, diethyl azodicarboxylate and ethyl 4-hydroxybiphenylcarboxylate, resulting in the desired (S)-(+)-product with high enantiomeric purity (>99% ee), with the chiral branched chain attached to the biphenyl. This method is operationally simple and provides the very important chiral precursor in good yields (62% in dry THF and 72% in dry Et2O). The condensation of the (S)-(+)-acid chloride from this material and a suitable 4-n-alkylthiophenol in toluene in the presence of pyridine or triethylamine furnishes the chiral (S)-(+)-thiobenzoate liquid crystals in good yields (80–83% in pyridine and 65–68% in Et3N). (S)-(+)-4-(1-Methylheptyloxy)biphenyl 4-alkylthiobenzoates are abbreviated (S)-MHOBSn , where n varies from 4 to 10 and denotes the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. DSC, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the (S)-MHOBSn series possesses a rich phase polymorphism: two highly ordered tilted phases CrG* and SmI*, as well as the ferroelectric smectic C (SmC*) and chiral nematic (N*) phase. In this series, the seldom observed transition between the chiral phases SmI*–SmC* is seen. All the compounds possess stable enantiotropic SmC* and N* phases. The existence of weak intermolecular hydrogen-bonding in (S)-MHOBSn was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy.  相似文献

Seven symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers containing different chiral cores and LC arms have been synthesised, termed EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD, TFBA-(R)PD, TFBDA-IB and TFBA-IB, respectively. TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase, while EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited chiral nematic (N*) phase. The effects of flexible spacer, structural type of LC arms and the chirality of the cores on the thermal properties of the dimers and the formation of N* phase have been studied. The results indicated that the chiral core was prone to induce the N* phase in LC dimer that contained nematic arms although the chirality of the core is very weak, while for the smectic LC arms containing CF3 terminal, the removal of the flexible spacer between chiral core and rigid LC units was conducive to the formation of N* phase. For example, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed SmA* phase, while TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited N* phase. However TFBA-(R,S)PD did not display N* phase, which reminded us that the chirality of the core and the conformation of the dimer also played an influence in the formation of the LC phase.  相似文献

Optical studies of smectic phases have been performed in homogeneously oriented samples of chiral 4-(2′-methylbutyl) phenyl-4′-n-octylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate (CE8). The helix structure has been found in smectic phases C, I and J, but not in the smectic G phase. Two chiral phases have been found between SI* and SG phases. Up to now one of them has not been observed. The pitch of the helix has been measured in all of the twisted smectic phases, including the SJ* phase. The existence of the helix in this phase suggests that the correlations between smectic layers are not very strong.  相似文献

Highly optically pure (R)- and (S)-3-ethylmercapto-2-methylpropionic acids were synthesized by using optically active (D)- and (L)-2,10-camphorsultams as chiral auxiliaries, respectively. Their derivatives, (R)- and (S)-EMMPNmB (m=6-12), were prepared for investigation. Microscopic texture observations demonstrated that the materials possess three stable frustrated phases: BP, TGBA* and TGBC* phases. Interestingly, it was found that the N* phase behaves as an intermediary phase between BP and TGBA* phases in a rather narrow temperature range (calc. 0.5-1.4°C). A study of the racemic mixture, (±)-EMMPNmB (m=10), indicated that the chirality of the molecule could suppress the formation of smectic phases in the heating process. An increase of alkyl chain length favoured the formation of the TGB phases particularly, in accompaniment with a change of TGB phases from monotropic to enantiotropic. Moderate maximum P S values (calc. 14-19 nC cm-2) and apparent tilt angle (calc. 20°) were obtained for the TGBC* phase in a surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal geometry.  相似文献
