Let C be a longest cycle in the 3‐connected graph G and let H be a component of G ? V(C) such that |V(H)| ≥ 3. We supply estimates of the form |C| ≥ 2d(u) + 2d(v) ? α(4 ≤ α ≤ 8), where u,v are suitably chosen non‐adjacent vertices in G. Also the exceptional classes for α = 6,7,8 are characterized. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory  相似文献

A proper vertex coloring of a graph G = (V, E) is acyclic if G contains no bicolored cycle. Given a list assignment L = {L(v)|vV} of G, we say G is acyclically L‐list colorable if there exists a proper acyclic coloring π of G such that π(v)∈L(v) for all vV. If G is acyclically L‐list colorable for any list assignment with |L(v)|≥k for all vV, then G is acyclically k‐choosable. In this article we prove that every planar graph without 4‐cycles and without intersecting triangles is acyclically 5‐choosable. This improves the result in [M. Chen and W. Wang, Discrete Math 308 (2008), 6216–6225], which says that every planar graph without 4‐cycles and without two triangles at distance less than 3 is acyclically 5‐choosable. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Ramsey number R(G1,G2) of two graphs G1 and G2 is the least integer p so that either a graph G of order p contains a copy of G1 or its complement Gc contains a copy of G2. In 1973, Burr and Erd?s offered a total of $25 for settling the conjecture that there is a constant c = c(d) so that R(G,G)≤ c|V(G)| for all d‐degenerate graphs G, i.e., the Ramsey numbers grow linearly for d‐degenerate graphs. We show in this paper that the Ramsey numbers grow linearly for degenerate graphs versus some sparser graphs, arrangeable graphs, and crowns for example. This implies that the Ramsey numbers grow linearly for degenerate graphs versus graphs with bounded maximum degree, planar graphs, or graphs without containing any topological minor of a fixed clique, etc. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We introduce and study backbone colorings, a variation on classical vertex colorings: Given a graph G = (V,E) and a spanning subgraph H of G (the backbone of G), a backbone coloring for G and H is a proper vertex coloring V → {1,2,…} of G in which the colors assigned to adjacent vertices in H differ by at least two. We study the cases where the backbone is either a spanning tree or a spanning path. We show that for tree backbones of G the number of colors needed for a backbone coloring of G can roughly differ by a multiplicative factor of at most 2 from the chromatic number χ(G); for path backbones this factor is roughly . We show that the computational complexity of the problem “Given a graph G, a spanning tree T of G, and an integer ?, is there a backbone coloring for G and T with at most ? colors?” jumps from polynomial to NP‐complete between ? = 4 (easy for all spanning trees) and ? = 5 (difficult even for spanning paths). We finish the paper by discussing some open problems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 55: 137–152, 2007  相似文献

Let G be a 2‐connected graph, let u and v be distinct vertices in V(G), and let X be a set of at most four vertices lying on a common (u, v)‐path in G. If deg(x) ≥ d for all xV(G) \ {u, v}, then there is a (u, v)‐path P in G with XV(P) and |E(P)| ≥ d. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 33: 55–65, 2000  相似文献

The following question was raised by Bruce Richter. Let G be a planar, 3‐connected graph that is not a complete graph. Denoting by d(v) the degree of vertex v, is G L‐list colorable for every list assignment L with |L(v)| = min{d(v), 6} for all vV(G)? More generally, we ask for which pairs (r, k) the following question has an affirmative answer. Let r and k be the integers and let G be a K5‐minor‐free r‐connected graph that is not a Gallai tree (i.e. at least one block of G is neither a complete graph nor an odd cycle). Is G L‐list colorable for every list assignment L with |L(v)| = min{d(v), k} for all vV(G)? We investigate this question by considering the components of G[Sk], where Sk: = {vV(G)|d(v)8k} is the set of vertices with small degree in G. We are especially interested in the minimum distance d(Sk) in G between the components of G[Sk]. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 71:18–30, 2012  相似文献

It is well‐known that every planar graph has a vertex of degree at most five. Kotzig proved that every 3‐connected planar graph has an edge xy such that deg(x) + deg (y) ≤ 13. In this article, considering a similar problem for the case of three or more vertices that induce a connected subgraph, we show that, for a given positive integer t, every 3‐connected planar graph G with |V(G)| ≥ t has a connected subgraph H of order t such that ΣxV(H) degG(x) ≤ 8t − 1. As a tool for proving this result, we consider decompositions of 3‐connected planar graphs into connected subgraphs of order at least t and at most 2t − 1. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this paper, we prove that if any set of |E(G)|- |V(G)| + 1 facial cycles of a 3-connected planar graph G embedded in the plane doesn't form a minimum cycle base of G, then any minimum cycle base of G contains a separating cycle, and G has a minor isomorphic to T6, where T6 is the graph obtained from the complete graph K6 by deleting a path with four edges.  相似文献

A total dominating set, S, in a graph, G, has the property that every vertex in G is adjacent to a vertex in S. The total dominating number, γt(G) of a graph G is the size of a minimum total dominating set in G. Let G be a graph with no component of size one or two and with Δ(G) ≥ 3. In 6 , it was shown that |E(G)| ≤ Δ(G) (|V(G)|–γt(G)) and conjectured that |E(G)| ≤ (Δ(G)+3) (|V(G)|–γt(G))/2 holds. In this article, we prove that holds and that the above conjecture is false as there for every Δ exist Δ‐regular bipartite graphs G with |E(G)| ≥ (Δ+0.1 ln(Δ)) (|V(G)|–γt(G))/2. The last result also disproves a conjecture on domination numbers from 8 . © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 55: 325–337, 2007  相似文献

If k is a prime power, and G is a graph with n vertices, then a k‐coloring of G may be considered as a vector in $\mathbb{GF}$(k)n. We prove that the subspace of $\mathbb{GF}$(3)n spanned by all 3‐colorings of a planar triangle‐free graph with n vertices has dimension n. In particular, any such graph has at least n − 1 nonequivalent 3‐colorings, and the addition of any edge or any vertex of degree 3 results in a 3‐colorable graph. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A graph G is k‐ordered if for every ordered sequence of k vertices, there is a cycle in G that encounters the vertices of the sequence in the given order. We prove that if G is a connected graph distinct from a path, then there is a number tG such that for every ttG the t‐iterated line graph of G, Lt (G), is (δ(Lt (G)) + 1)‐ordered. Since there is no graph H which is (δ(H)+2)‐ordered, the result is best possible. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 52: 171–180, 2006  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order 4k and let δ(G) denote the minimum degree of G. Let F be a given connected graph. Suppose that |V(G)| is a multiple of |V(F)|. A spanning subgraph of G is called an F‐factor if its components are all isomorphic to F. In this paper, we prove that if δ(G)≥5/2k, then G contains a K4?‐factor (K4? is the graph obtained from K4 by deleting just one edge). The condition on the minimum degree is best possible in a sense. In addition, the proof can be made algorithmic. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 39: 111–128, 2002  相似文献

Let G be a simple undirected connected graph on n vertices with maximum degree Δ. Brooks' Theorem states that G has a proper Δ‐coloring unless G is a complete graph, or a cycle with an odd number of vertices. To recolor G is to obtain a new proper coloring by changing the color of one vertex. We show an analogue of Brooks' Theorem by proving that from any k‐coloring, , a Δ‐coloring of G can be obtained by a sequence of recolorings using only the original k colors unless
  • G is a complete graph or a cycle with an odd number of vertices, or
  • – , G is Δ‐regular and, for each vertex v in G, no two neighbors of v are colored alike.
We use this result to study the reconfiguration graph of the k‐colorings of G. The vertex set of is the set of all possible k‐colorings of G and two colorings are adjacent if they differ on exactly one vertex. We prove that for , consists of isolated vertices and at most one further component that has diameter . This result enables us to complete both a structural and an algorithmic characterization for reconfigurations of colorings of graphs of bounded maximum degree.  相似文献

Let G be a connected graph and let eb(G) and λ(G) denote the number of end‐blocks and the maximum number of disjoint 3‐vertex paths Λ in G. We prove the following theorems on claw‐free graphs: (t1) if G is claw‐free and eb(G) ≤ 2 (and in particular, G is 2‐connected) then λ(G) = ⌊| V(G)|/3⌋; (t2) if G is claw‐free and eb(G) ≥ 2 then λ(G) ≥ ⌊(| V(G) | − eb(G) + 2)/3 ⌋; and (t3) if G is claw‐free and Δ*‐free then λ(G) = ⌊| V(G) |/3⌋ (here Δ* is a graph obtained from a triangle Δ by attaching to each vertex a new dangling edge). We also give the following sufficient condition for a graph to have a Λ‐factor: Let n and p be integers, 1 ≤ pn − 2, G a 2‐connected graph, and |V(G)| = 3n. Suppose that GS has a Λ‐factor for every SV(G) such that |S| = 3p and both V(G) − S and S induce connected subgraphs in G. Then G has a Λ‐factor. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A connected graph G is said to be factor-critical if G − ν has a perfect matching for every vertex ν of G. In this paper, the factor-critical graphs G with |V(G)| maximum matchings and with |V(G)| + 1 ones are characterized, respectively. From this, some special bicritical graphs are characterized. The tensor product of two graphs, G and H, has a vertex set V(G) × V(H) and an edge between (u,v) and (u′,v′) iff both u u′ ∈ E(G) and v v′ ∈ E(H). Let A(G) denote the limit of the independence ratios of tensor powers of G, lim, α(Gn)/|V(Gn)|. This parameter was introduced in [Brown, Nowakowski, Rall, SIAM J Discrete Math 9 ( 5 ), 290–300], where it was shown that A(G) is lower bounded by the vertex expansion ratio of independent sets of G. In this article we study the relation between these parameters further, and ask whether they are in fact equal. We present several families of graphs where equality holds, and discuss the effect the above question has on various open problems related to tensor graph products. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
