The controlled nitroxide‐mediated homopolymerization of 9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole (VBK) and the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with varying amounts of VBK were accomplished by using 10 mol % {tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino} nitroxide relative to 2‐({tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino}oxy)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (BlocBuilder?) in dimethylformamide at temperatures from 80 to 125 °C. As little as 1 mol % of VBK in the feed was required to obtain a controlled copolymerization of an MMA/VBK mixture, resulting in a linear increase in molecular weight versus conversion with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw /Mn ≈ 1.3). Preferential incorporation of VBK into the copolymer was indicated by the MMA/VBK reactivity ratios determined: rVBK = 2.7 ± 1.5 and rMMA = 0.24 ± 0.14. The copolymers were found significantly “living” by performing subsequent chain extensions with a fresh batch of VBK and by 31P NMR spectroscopy analysis. VBK was found to be an effective controlling comonomer for NMP of MMA, and such low levels of VBK comonomer ensured transparency in the final copolymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New amorphous semiconducting copolymers, poly(9,9‐dialkylfluorene)‐alt‐(3‐dodecylthienyl‐divinylbenzene‐3‐dodecylthienyl) derivatives (PEFTVB and POFTVB), were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The structure of copolymers was confirmed by H NMR, IR, and elemental analysis. The copolymers showed very good solubility in organic solvents and high thermal stability with high Tg of 178–185 °C. The weight average molecular weight was found to be 107,900 with polydispersity of 3.14 for PEFTVB and 76,700 with that of 3.31 for POFTVB. UV–vis absorption studies showed the maximum absorption at 428 nm (in solution) and 435 nm (in film) for PEFTVB and at 430 nm (in solution) and 436 nm (in film) for POFTVB. Photoluminescence studies showed the emission at 498 nm (in solution) and 557 nm (in film) for PEFTVB and at 498 nm (in solution) and 536 nm (in film) for POFTVB. The solution‐processed thin‐film transistors showed the carrier mobility of 2 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1 for PEFTVB‐based devices and 2 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1 for POFTVB‐based devices. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2,3,4,5,6‐Pentafluoro and 4‐trifluoromethyl 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro styrenes were readily copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) by a free radical initiator. The copolymers were soluble in tetrahydrofuran and acetone. The films obtained were transparent and flexible. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the copolymers were found positively deviated from the Gordon–Taylor equation. The positive deviation could be accounted for by dipole–dipole intrachain interaction between the methyl ester group of MMA and the highly fluorinated aromatic moiety, which resulted in a decrease in the segmental mobility of the polymer chains and the enhanced Tg values of the copolymers. The water absorption of PMMA was greatly decreased by copolymerization of MMA with the highly fluorinated styrenes. With as little as 10 mol % of pentafluoro styrene content in the copolymer, the water absorption was decreased to one‐third of that for pure PMMA. The fluorinated styrenes‐MMA copolymers were thermally stable up to 420 °C under air and nitrogen atmospheres. With 50 mol % of MMA in the copolymer, the copolymer was still stable up to 350 °C. Since these copolymers contain a large number of fluorine atoms, the light absorption in the region of the visible to near infrared is decreased in comparison with nonfluorinated polymers. Thus, these copolymers may be suitable for application in optical devices, such as optical fibers and waveguides. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Pyridine‐2‐carboximidates [methyl ( 1a ), ethyl ( 1b ), isopropyl ( 1c ), cyclopentyl ( 1d ), cyclohexyl ( 1e ), n‐octyl ( 1f ), and benzyl ( 1g )] were prepared from the reaction of 2‐cyanopyridine with the corresponding alcohols. Cyclopentyl‐substituted 1d was found to be a highly effective ligand for copper‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA). For example, the observed rate constant for a CuBr/ 1d catalytic system was found to be nearly twice as high as the cyclohexyl‐substituted CuBr/ 1e catalytic system [kobs = (1.19 vs 0.56) × 10?4 s?1). The effects of the solvents, temperature, catalyst/initiator, and solvent/monomer ratio on the ATRP of MMA were studied systematically for the CuBr/ 1d catalytic system. The optimum condition for the ATRP of MMA was found to be a 1:2:1:400 [CuBr]o/[ 1d ]o/[ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate]o/[MMA]o ratio at 60 °C in veratrole solution, which yielded well‐defined poly(MMA) with a narrow molecular weight distribution of 1.14. The catalytically active copper complex 2d was isolated from the reaction of CuBr with 1d . Narrow molecular weight distributions as low as 1.06 were achieved for the CuBr/ 1d catalytic system by employing 10% of the deactivator CuBr2. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Plastic optical fibers (POFs) are highly promising transmission media for future home networking. In comparison to glass optical fibers (GOFs), which are commonly used in core and metropolitan networks, POFs offer many advantages such as great flexibility and easy handling. This review begins with the basic concepts of optical fibers and moves on to the early history of loss reduction in POFs. What drastically changed the status of POFs in the communications field was a graded‐index technology that improved the bandwidth to over 1 gigabits per second. However, even after the loss and bandwidth were enhanced to their limits, the performances of POFs were insufficient for market demand when using conventional optical polymer materials such as poly(methyl methacrylate). Recently, this problem has been solved by several lines of material research using fluorinated polymers. As a result, high‐speed optical home networking by POFs has become more realistic. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2011  相似文献

Perfluorotetrahydro‐2‐methylene‐furo[3,4‐d][1,3]dioxole (monomer I ) and perfluoro‐2‐methylene‐4‐methoxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane (monomer II ) are soluble in perfluorinated or partially fluorinated solvents and readily polymerize in solution or in bulk when initiated by a free‐radical initiator, perfluorodibenzoyl peroxide. The copolymerization parameters have been determined with in situ 19F NMR measurements. The copolymerization reactivity ratios are r I = 1.80 and r II = 0.80 in 1,1,2‐trichlorotrifluoroethane at 41 °C and r I = 0.97 and r II = 0.85 for the bulk polymerization. These data show that this copolymerization pair has a good copolymerization tendency and yields nearly ideal random copolymers. The copolymers have only one glass‐transition temperature from 101 to 168 °C, depending on the copolymer compositions. Melting endotherms have not been observed in their differential scanning calorimetry traces, and this indicates that all the copolymers with different compositions are completely amorphous. These copolymers are thermally stable (the initial decomposition temperatures are higher than 350 °C under an N2 atmosphere) and have low refractive indices and high optical transparency from UV to near‐infrared. Copolymer films prepared by casting were flexible and tough. These properties make the copolymers ideal candidates as optical and electrical materials. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) experiments were performed on the bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) at ?34 °C. The aim of this study was to investigate the polymer end groups formed during the photoinitiation process of MMA monomer using 2,2‐dimethoxy‐2‐phenylacetophenone (DMPA) and benzoin as initiators via matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight (MALDI‐TOF) mass spectrometry. Analysis of the MALDI‐TOF spectra indicated that the two radical fragments generated upon pulsed laser irradiation show markedly different reactivity toward MMA: whereas the benzoyl fragment—common to both DMPA and benzoin—clearly participates in the initiation process, the acetal and benzyl alcohol fragments cannot be identified as end groups in the polymer. The complexity of the MALDI‐TOF spectrum strongly increased with increasing laser intensity, this effect being more pronounced in the case of benzoin. This indicates that a cleaner initiation process is at work when DMPA is used as the photoinitiator. In addition, the MALDI‐TOF spectra were analyzed to extract the propagation‐rate coefficient, kp, of MMA at ?34 °C. The obtained value of kp = 43.8 L mol?1 s?1 agrees well with corresponding numbers obtained via size exclusion chromatography (kp = 40.5 L mol?1 s?1). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A bromine capped star‐shaped poly(methyl methacrylate) (S‐PMMA‐Br) was synthesized with CuBr/sparteine/PT‐Br as a catalyst and initiator to polymerize methyl methacrylate (MMA) according to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, with S‐PMMA‐Br as a macroinitiator, a series of new liquid crystal rod–coil star block copolymers with different molecular weights and low polydispersity were obtained by this method. The block architecture {coil‐conformation of the MMA segment and rigid‐rod conformation of 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl] styrene segment} of the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR. The liquid‐crystalline behavior of these copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. We found that the liquid‐crystalline behavior depends on the molecular weight of the rigid segment; only the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers with each arm's Mn,GPC of the rigid block beyond 0.91 × 104 g/mol could form liquid‐crystalline phases above the glass‐transition temperature of the rigid block. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out at room temperature (25 °C) under 60Co γ‐irradiation environment. The polymerization proceeded smoothly with high conversion (>90%) within 7 h. The polymerizations kept the features of controlled radical polymerization: first‐order kinetics, well‐predetermined number‐average molecular weights (Mn,GPC), and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25). 1H NMR spectroscope and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry confirmed that poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chain was end‐capped by the initiator moieties. The Cu(II) concentration could reduce to 20 ppm level while keeping good control over molecular weights. This is the first successful example for the ATRP of MMA under 60Co γ‐irradiation at room temperature. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

We report on the growth and characterization of one‐dimensional (1D) planar all‐polymer photonic crystals (PhC) with high dielectric contrast (Δn = 0.3) prepared by spin coating using hyperbranched polyvinylsulfide polymers (HB‐PVS) as high refractive index material and cellulose acetate as low refractive index material. Solution processable HB‐PVS show a near ultraviolet absorption inducing an increased refractive index in the visible‐near infrared (n = 1.68, λ = 1000 nm). HBPVS:Cellulose Acetate Distributed Bragg Reflectors show a very clear fingerprint of the photonic band gap possessing the expected polarized dispersion properties as a function of the incidence angle. Moreover, engineered microcavities tuned on the weak fluorescence spectrum of the HB‐PVS show directional fluorescence enhancement effects due to spectral redistribution of the emission oscillator strength. The combination of all these properties testifies the high optical quality of the obtained photonic structures thus indicating HB‐PVS as an interesting material for the preparation of such PhC. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new carbazole‐derived, triphenylamine (TPA)‐containing aromatic dicarboxylic acid monomer, 4,4′‐dicarboxy‐4″‐(3,6‐di‐tert‐butylcarbazol‐9‐yl)TPA, was synthesized, and it led to a series of electroactive aromatic polyamides with main‐chain TPA and pendent 3,6‐bis(tert‐butyl)carbazole units by reacting it with various aromatic diamines via the phosphorylation polyamidation technique. The polyamides were amorphous with good solubility in many organic solvents and could be solution‐cast into flexible and strong films. They showed high glass‐transition temperatures (282–335 °C) and high thermal stability (10% weight loss temperatures >480 °C). The electroactive polymer films had well‐defined and reversible redox couples with good cycle stability in acetonitrile solutions. The polymer films also exhibited fluorescent and multielectrochromic behaviors. The anodically electrochromic polyamide films had moderate coloration efficiency (~100 cm2/C) and high optical contrast ratio of transmittance change (Δ%T) up to 47% at 813 nm and 48% at 414 nm for the green coloring. After hundreds of cyclic switches, the polymer films still retained good redox and electrochromic activity. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

The ability of 2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone (VDM), a highly reactive functional monomer, to produce block copolymers by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) sequential polymerization with methyl acrylate (MA), styrene (S), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated using cumyl dithiobenzoate (CDB) and 2‐cyanoisopropyl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as chain transfer agents. The results show that PS‐b‐PVDM and PMA‐b‐PVDM well‐defined block copolymers can be prepared either by polymerization of VDM from PS‐ and PMA‐macroCTAs, respectively, or polymerization of S and MA from a PVDM‐macroCTA. In contrast, PMMA‐b‐PVDM block copolymers with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity can only be obtained by using PMMA as the macroCTA. Electro‐optic side‐chain polymers have been synthesized by the post‐functionalization of methacrylate isocyanate polymers with novel phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene bridge (FTC) nonlinear optical chromophores. For this application, FTC‐based chromophores were modified in their electronic donor structure, exhibiting much larger molecular hyperpolarizabilities compared with the benchmark FTC. Of these new chromophores, absorption spectra, hyper‐Rayleigh scattering experiment, and thermal analysis were carried out to confirm availability as effective nonlinear optical units for electro‐optic side‐chain polymers. The electro‐optic coefficients (r33) of obtained polymers were investigated in the process of in situ poling by monitoring the temperature, current flow, poling field, and electro‐optic signal. Compared with the nonsubstituted analogue, benxyloxy modified FTC chromophore significantly achieved higher nonlinear optical property, exhibiting molecular hyperpolarizability at 1.9 μm of 4600 × 10?30 esu and an r33 value of 150 pm/V at the wavelength of 1.31 μm. Synthesized electro‐optic polymers showed high glass transition temperature (Tg), so that the temporal stability examination exhibited >78% of the electro‐optic intensity remaining at 85 °C over 500 h. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The α,ω‐end‐capped poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (Cn‐POXZ‐Cn) have been synthesized by a one‐pot process using cationic ring‐opening polymerization with an appropriate initiator and terminating agent. The polymers bearing different alkyl groups C12 and C18 have molecular weight in the range of 2.4 × 103 to 14 × 103 with a small polydispersity index. The solution behavior of the free chains has been analyzed in a nonselective solvent, dichloromethane, by small‐angle neutron scattering and dynamic light scattering. These amphiphilic polymers associate in water to form flower‐like micellar structures. Critical micelle concentrations, investigated by fluorescence technique, are in the range of 0.03–0.5 g L?1 and are dependent on the hydrophilic/lipophilic balance. The structural properties of the aggregates have also been investigated by viscometry. Intrinsic viscosities of these polymers are in the same range as that of the precursors poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (POXZ) and mono‐functionalized polymers. Large viscosity increase corresponding to intermicellar bridging was observed in the vicinity of the micelle overlap concentration. Addition of hydroxypropyl β‐cyclodextrin (HβCD) has dissociated the aggregates and the intrinsic viscosities of the HβCD‐end‐capped chains have become comparable with the ones of POXZ precursor chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Solution property of poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate)‐b‐polyisoprene‐b‐poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (GIG copolymer) was studied by using dynamic light scattering and static light scattering for N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution and DMF/toluene mixed solutions. GIG copolymer proved to aggregate in DMF and under DMF‐rich condition, that is, high‐polar region. The aggregate decreased in size, and completely disappeared under toluene‐rich condition, that is, low‐polar region. The correlation between solubility parameter and aggregate size of GIG copolymer in the DMF/toluene solution systems quantitatively demonstrated how strongly polarity caused by hydrogen bond made an impact on the aggregation behavior. Because the main driving force to the aggregation under DMF‐rich condition originates with polyisoprene (PIP) blocks, the aggregate in DMF is considered to be a core‐shell micelle consisting of flexible PIP core surrounded by rigid poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (PBLG) shell. The values of dimensionless parameter ρ, defined as the ratio of radius of gyration 〈S21/2 to hydrodynamic radius RH, revealed that a single chain of GIG copolymer had the form of rigid rod with flexibility, that is, once‐broken rod, caused by the incorporation of a flexible PIP chain between two rigid PBLG rods in the DMF/toluene solution system. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of three new 1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole‐based polymers such as poly[1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole] ( PTPT ), poly[1,4‐(2,5‐bis(octyloxy)phenylene)‐alt‐5,5'‐(1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole)] ( PPTPT ), and poly[2,5‐(3‐octylthiophene)‐alt‐5,5'‐(1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole)] ( PTTPT ) were synthesized and characterized. The new polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents and the thermogravimetric analysis showed that the three polymers are thermally stable with the 5% degradation temperature >379 °C. The absorption maxima of the polymers were 478, 483, and 485 nm in thin film and the optical band gaps calculated from the onset wavelength of the optical absorption were 2.15, 2.20, and 2.13 eV, respectively. Each of the polymers was investigated as an electron donor blending with PC70BM as an electron acceptor in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. BHJ solar cells were fabricated in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC70BM/TiOx/Al configurations. Two conjugated main‐chain polymers consisting of heteroarene‐fused π‐conjuagted donor moiety alternating with 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (P1) or 2,5‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl) thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole (P2) units have been synthesized. They are intrinsically amorphous in nature and do not exhibit crystalline melting temperatures during thermal analysis. The effect of the fused rings on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of these polymers has been investigated. The polymer (P1) containing 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazole has a broad absorption extending from 300 to 600 nm with optical bandgaps as low as 2.02 eV. The HOMO levels (5.42 to 5.29 eV) are more sensitive to the choice of acceptor. The polymers were employed to fabricate organic photovoltaic cells with methanofullerene [6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). As a result, the polymer solar cell device containing P1 had the best preliminary results with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.61 V, a short‐circuit current density of 6.19 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.32, offering an overall power conversion efficiency of 1.21%. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2‐[(N‐Benzyl‐N‐methylamino)methyl]‐1,3‐butadiene (BMAMBD), the first asymmetric tertiary amino‐containing diene‐based monomer, was synthesized by sulfone chemistry and a nickel‐catalyzed Grignard coupling reaction in high purity and good yield. The bulk and solution free‐radical polymerizations of this monomer were studied. Traditional bulk free‐radical polymerization kinetics were observed, giving polymers with 〈Mn〉 values of 21 × 103 to 48 × 103 g/mol (where Mn is the number‐average molecular weight) and polydispersity indices near 1.5. In solution polymerization, polymers with higher molecular weights were obtained in cyclohexane than in tetrahydrofuran (THF) because of the higher chain transfer to the solvent. The chain‐transfer constants calculated for cyclohexane and THF were 1.97 × 10?3 and 5.77 × 10?3, respectively. To further tailor polymer properties, we also completed copolymerization studies with styrene. Kinetic studies showed that BMAMBD incorporated into the polymer chain at a faster rate than styrene. With the Mayo–Lewis equation, the monomer reactivity ratios of BMAMBD and styrene at 75 °C were determined to be 2.6 ± 0.3 and 0.28 ± 0.02, respectively. Altering the composition of BMAMBD in the copolymer from 17 to 93% caused the glass‐transition temperature of the resulting copolymer to decrease from 64 to ?7 °C. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of polyester‐amides that contain phosphorus were synthesized by low temperature solution condensation of 1,4‐bis(3‐aminobenzoyloxy)‐2‐(6‐oxido‐6H‐dibenz〈c,e〉〈1,2〉oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl) phenylene (III) with various aromatic acid chlorides in N‐methyl pyrrolidone (NMP). All polyester‐amides are amorphous and readily soluble in many organic solvents such as dimethylacetamide (DMAc), NMP, dimethylsulfoxide, and dimethylformamide at room temperature or on heating. Light yellow and flexible films of these polyester‐amides could be cast from the DMAc solutions. The polymers with an inherent viscosity of 0.26–0.72 dL/g were obtained in quantitative yields. These polyester‐amides have good mechanical properties (G′ of ∼ 109 Pa up to 200°C) and good thermal and flame retardant properties. The glass transition temperatures of these polyester‐amides ranged from 250 to 273°C. The degradation temperatures (Td 5%) in nitrogen ranged from 466 to 478°C and the char yields at 800°C were 59.6–65.2%. The limiting oxygen indexes of these polyester‐amides ranged from 35 to 43. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 891–899, 1999  相似文献
