A novel series of sulfonated block copolymers were successfully synthesized by the condensation of modified poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and polybutadiene (PB), followed by the selective post-sulfonation of PB blocks using acetyl sulfate as the sulfonating reagent. The sulfonic acid groups were only attached onto PB segments due to the high reactivity of double bonds to sulfonating reagent. The degree of sulfonation was controlled by changing the feed ratio of sulfonating reagent to block copolymer. PEEK-b-sPB could be easily cast into flexible and transparent membranes. The obtained membranes exhibited good thermal stability and satisfied mechanical properties. Tensile test showed the incorporation of sulfonate groups into PB blocks resulted in an increase in tensile strength and a decrease in elongation at break. TEM images revealed the existence of ionic spherical domains with the average sizes of 50-100 nm. Some of these small domains further aggregated to form large hydrophilic regions. The proton conductivity values were measured in the range of 10−2 S/cm in water and increased with increasing IEC and temperature.  相似文献

A series of selectively sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)‐b‐polybutadiene copolymers (SPAES‐b‐PB) were prepared based on carboxyl terminated polybutadiene (CTPB) and sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) that was directly prepared by polycondensation of 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol with different molar ratios of disodium 3,3′‐disulfonate‐4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (SDCDPS) to 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenylsulfone (DCDPS), and subsequent selective postsulfonation of flexible PB block was carried out. Epoxidized modification of membranes was conducted by an in situ‐generated peracid method. The content of sulfonic acid groups attaching to aromatic rings in SPAES was determined by 1H NMR and was in good aggrement with the controlled ratios. The effect of sulfonated rigid blocks on the postsulfonation of PB blocks was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and the temperature of the melting peak (T) of membranes in acid form were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Fenton's reagent test revealed that the selectively sulfonated SPAES‐b‐PB membranes had good stability to oxidation. The microstructure of rod‐like rigid SPAES blocks and interpenetrating network of ions were observed by transmission electron microscopy. Complex impedance measurement showed that an epoxidized membrane with SPAES‐40 exhibited the highest proton conductivity (1.08 × 10?1 S/cm, 90 °C), which was due to the formation of obvious ionic networks. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper describes our work on the synthesis of a series of sulfonated homo‐/co‐polyimides (SPI) which were obtained by post‐sulfonation method over three steps. In the first step, 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) dissolved in N‐methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) were reacted with benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) in order to yield poly(amic acid) (PAA). Secondly, precipitated PAA was sulfonated via concentrated sulfuric acid (95–98%) at room temperature to give post‐sulfonated PAA (PSPAA). Finally, PSPAA was converted into post‐sulfonated PI (PSPI) by the thermal imidization method. PSPIs with ion exchange capacity (IEC) ranging from 0.20 to 0.67 meq/g were prepared. The thermal properties of the PSPIs were evaluated and high desulfonation temperature was found in the range of 190–350°C, suggesting the high stability of sulfonic acid groups. In water, PSPI‐5 membrane displayed similar proton conductivity to Nafion®117, whereas this membrane showed poor conductivity in dry state. All PSPIs displayed good solubility in common polar aprotic solvents such as NMP and dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Furthermore, the effects of post‐sulfonation reaction on chemical structure, thermal oxidative behavior, and physical properties of the PSPI membranes such as membrane quality/stability and water uptake were discussed. A series of soluble, benzimidazole‐based polymers containing sulfonic acid groups (SuPBI) has been synthesized. SuPBI membranes resist extensive swelling in water but are poor proton conductors. When blended with high ion exchange capacity (IEC) sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), a polymer that has high proton conductivity but poor mechanical integrity, ionic crosslinks form reducing the extent of swelling. The effect of sulfonation of PBI on crosslinking in these blends was gauged through comparison with nonsulfonated analogs. Sulfonic acid groups present in SuPBI compensate for acid groups involved in crosslinking, thereby increasing IEC and proton conductivity of the membrane. When water uptake and proton conductivity were compared to the IEC of blends containing either sulfonated or nonsulfonated PBI, no noticeable distinction between PBI types could be made. Comparisons were also made between these blends and pure SPEEK membranes of similar IEC. Blend membranes exhibit slightly lower maximum proton conductivity than pure SPEEK membranes (60 vs. 75 mS cm?1) but had significantly enhanced dimensional stability upon immersion in water, especially at elevated temperature (80 °C). Elevated temperature measurements in humid environments show increased proton conductivity of the SuPBI membranes when compared with SPEEK‐only membranes of similar IEC (c.f. 55 for the blend vs. 42 mS cm?1 for SPEEK at 80 °C, 90% relative humidity). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The possibility of developing low‐cost commercial grafted and sulfonated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF‐g‐PSSA) membranes as proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications have been investigated. PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes were systematically prepared and examined with the focus of understanding how the polymer microstructure (degree of grafting and sulfonation, ion‐exchange capacity, etc) affects their methanol permeability, water uptake, and proton conductivity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the changes of the membrane's microstructure after grafting and sulfonation. The results showed that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes exhibited good thermal stability and lower methanol permeability. The proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes was also measured by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that the proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes depends on the degree of sulfonation. All the sulfonated membranes show high proton conductivity at 92°C, in the range of 27 to 235 mScm−1, which is much higher than that of Nafion212 (102 mScm−1 at 80°C). The results indicated that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes are particularly promising membranes to be used as polymer electrolyte membranes due to their excellent stability, low methanol permeability, and high proton conductivity.  相似文献

In this article, we report the syntheses and characterizations of a series of novel block polyelectrolytes, poly(styrene‐block‐sulfonated hydroxystyrene) (PS‐b‐sPHS), containing pendant sulfonic acid groups attached to the backbone via propyl spacers in the sPHS domain. PS‐b‐sPHS with various compositions were synthesized via anionic polymerization and the following analogous chemistry to achieve accurate control of molecular weight (Mw), narrow polydispersity and high degree of sulfonation. Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) were prepared from PS‐b‐sPHS with sulfonic acids in either potassium salts or tetra‐alkylammonium salts via solvent casting and following treatments. Some unique morphologies, such as hallow channels and lamellar arrangement of strings of beads, were observed as a consequence of equilibrium between microphase separation and columbic interactions between polyelectrolytes. The transportation properties were found to closely relate to the morphologies of the PEMs. The combination of microphase separation of block polyelectrolytes and freedom of movement of pendent alkylsulfonic acids was demonstrated to effectively enhance the proton transport and suppress the methanol crossover for the PEMs, leading to the selectivity higher than Nafion 117 by five times at most. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrophilic/hydrophobic block copolymers as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) has become an emerging area of research in recent years. These copolymers were obtained through moderate temperature (~ 100 °C) coupling reactions, which minimize the ether‐ether interchanges between hydrophobic and hydrophilic telechelic oligomers via a nucleophilic aromatic substitution mechanism. The hydrophilic blocks were based on the nucleophilic step polymerization of 3,3′‐disulfonated, 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone with an excess 4,4′‐biphenol to afford phenoxide endgroups. The hydrophobic (fluorinated) blocks were largely based on decafluoro biphenyl (excess) and various bisphenols. The copolymers were obtained in high molecular weights and were solvent cast into tough membranes, which had nanophase separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions. The performance and structure‐property relationships of these materials were studied and compared to random copolymer systems. NMR results supported that the multiblock sequence had been achieved. They displayed superior proton conductivity, due to the ionic proton conducting channels formed through the self‐assembly of the sulfonated blocks. The nano‐phase separated morphologies of the copolymer membranes were studied and confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Through control of a variety of parameters, including ion exchange capacity and sequence lengths, performances as high, or even higher than those of the state‐of‐the‐art PEM, Nafion, were achieved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of sulfonated homo‐ and random co‐polyimides (co‐SPI) based on 2,4‐diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (2,4‐DABS) and 2,5‐diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (2,5‐DABS) has been synthesized via conventional two‐step polyimidization method. 2,4‐DABS and 2,5‐DABS were used as sulfonated diamine compounds, 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) were used as non‐sulfonated diamine compounds. Mixtures of sulfonated and non‐sulfonated diamine compounds were reacted with benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) to obtain co‐SPI membranes. Molar ratios of sulfonated to non‐sulfonated diamine were systematically varied to produce copolymers of controlled compositions. The co‐SPIs were evaluated for thermal oxidative stability, ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, proton conductivity, solubility, and hydrolytic stability. Proton conductivity and hydrolytic stability of the co‐SPIs were compared with the fully aromatic polyimide, homo‐SPIs (BTDA/2,4‐DABS and BTDA/2,5‐DABS). Regarding thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis, it is concluded that desulfonation temperature in the range of 200–350°C suggests high stability of sulfonic acid groups. co‐SPIs with 40 mol% of 2,4‐DABS showed similar or higher proton conductivity than Nafion® 117 in water. Proton conductivity values of the co‐SPIs were mainly a function of IEC and water uptake. Consequently, the optimum concentration of 2,4‐DABS was found to be in the range of 30–40 mol% from the viewpoint of proton conductivity, IEC, and hydrolytic stability. A series of wholly aromatic sulfonated poly(ether amide)s (SPEAs) containing a sulfonic acid group on the dicarbonyl aromatic ring were prepared via a polycondensation reaction of sulfonated terephthalic acid (STA), terephthalic acid (TA), and aromatic diamine monomers. The degree of sulfonation was readily controlled by adjusting the monomer feed ratio of STA and TA in the polymerization process, and randomly sulfonated polymers with an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.0–1.8 mequiv/g were prepared using this protocol. The chemical structures of randomly sulfonated polymers were characterized using NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopies. Gel permeation chromatography analysis of SPEAs indicated the formation of high‐molecular‐weight sulfonated polymer. Tough and flexible SPEA membranes were obtained from solution of N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and thermogravimetric analysis of these membranes showed a high degree of thermal stability. Compared with previously reported sulfonated aromatic polyamides, these new SPEAs showed a significantly lower water uptake of 10–30%. In proton conductivity measurements, ODA‐SPEA‐70 (IEC = 1.80 mequiv/g), which was obtained from polycondensation of 4,4′‐oxydianiline and 70 mol % STA, showed a comparable proton conductivity (105 mS/cm) to that of Nafion 117 at 80 °C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers of polystyrene‐block‐(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) (PS‐b‐PCHD), with varied molecular weights and compositions, were synthesized by sequential polymerization of styrene and 1,3‐cyclohexadiene (CHD) initiated by sec‐butyllithium in cyclohexane in the presence of appropriate additives during formation of the PCHD block. The residual double bonds in the PCHD block were saturated by addition of in situ generated difluorocarbene and/or hydrogen to enhance thermal and chemical stability. The fluorinated and/or hydrogenated polydiene blocks were chemically stable, allowing for controlled sulfonation of the PS blocks using acetyl sulfate. 1H NMR and FT‐IR characterization confirmed successful fluorination/hydrogenation and sulfonation of the respective blocks. The resulting amphiphilic block copolymers consist of a semiflexible fluorine‐containing hydrophobic block having a bridged double ring structure and a hydrophilic sulfonated PS block. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We prepared novel proton‐conductivity membranes based on blends of sulfonated polyimides. The blend membranes were prepared from a sulfonated homopolyimide and a sulfonated copolyimide with a solvent‐casting method. The proton conductivities of the blend membranes were measured as functions of the temperature with four‐point‐probe electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The conductivity of the membranes strongly depended on the sulfonated homopolyimide content and increased with an increase in the content. The proton conductivity of all the blended membranes indicated a higher value than that determined in Nafion at 80 °C, and this may mean that the proton transfer in the blend membranes is responsible for the ionic channels induced by the hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated thermal properties of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) prepared by the radiation-induced grafting of styrene into crosslinked-polytetrafluoroethylene films and the subsequent sulfonation for fuel-cell applications. A conventional thermogravimetric analysis was found to be unreliable because the resulting curve varied greatly with the heating rate. Thus, in order to obtain accurate information, we performed an ex-situ heat-treatment analysis, which involved heating of the PEMs at fixed temperatures of 200-350 °C and measurement of their remaining weight, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and proton conductivity (σ) after washing in pure water. The IEC and σ did not change at any temperature up to 200 °C, indicating high thermal stability. At 250 °C, however, the PEM properties deteriorated probably via radical cleavage of the C-S bond between a sulfonic acid group and an aromatic ring, and condensation of two sulfonic acid groups. Finally, the PEM was hot-pressed with two electrodes at 200 °C to produce a good membrane-electrode assembly for a fuel cell.  相似文献

A novel series of benzimidazole‐containing sulfonated poly(arylene sulfones)s with controllable amount of basic 2,6‐bis(benzimidazol‐2‐yl)pyridine (BIP) and sulfonic acid groups have been prepared by the copolycondensation of a new BIP‐containing arylene difluoride monomer (DFSBIP) with a sulfonated arylene difluoride (DSDFS) and 4,4′‐biphenol (BP). All the resulting polymers have high molecular weights, good thermal stability, and can form uniform and tough membranes by simple solution casting. Because of the strong acid–base interaction between BIP and sulfonic acid groups, ionic crosslinking networks forms that resulted in polymer membranes with good dimensional stability in water even at high temperature (e.g., 100 °C). The ion exchange capacity (IEC) of the polymer membranes was investigated through a new simple pH‐determination method. A comparison between the experimental IEC values with the calculated ones based on the polymer structures indicated that each BIP unit interacted with one sulfonic acid group. Thus, by controlling the relative content of BIP units and sulfonate groups in the polymers, the intra‐ and intermolecular acid–base interactions could be readily optimized so as to achieve polymers with high IEC values, high proton conductivities as well as low swelling ratios, demonstrating good potential for proton exchange membrane applications. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Novel solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) membrane containing both ? COOH and ? SO3H group has been prepared by simultaneous method of radiation grafting of acrylic acid onto FEP followed by sulfonation. The presence of weakly acidic acrylic acid controls the swelling in water while ? SO3H group provides conductivity due to its strongly ionic characteristic. FEP‐g‐acrylic acid and its sulfonated derivatives were characterized by their properties. While the mechanical properties decreased, other properties such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake and ionic conductivity increased with increase in graft content. These properties further changed on sulfonation. Acrylic acid being weakly acidic in nature, conductivity values of the grafted membrane were quite low. However, introduction of strong ? SO3H group resulted in conductivity closer to Nafion 117. Few sulfonated membranes have been tested with respect to H2/O2 fuel cell performance. Short‐term fuel cell test for 100 hr gave a stable performance. These membranes are less expensive compared to Nafion. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) was sulfonated to different ion exchange capacities (IECs) using chlorosulfonic acid as the sulfonating agent. Tough, ductile films were successfully cast from sulfonated PPO (SPPO) solutions in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone or N,N‐dimethylformamide. The obtained membranes had good thermal stability revealed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Compared with an unsulfonated PPO membrane, the hydrophilicity and water uptake of the SPPO membranes were enhanced, as shown by reduced contact angles with water. The tensile test indicated that the SPPO membranes with IEC ranging from 0.77 to 2.63 meq/g were tough and strong at ambient conditions and still maintained adequate mechanical strength after immersion in water at room temperature for 24 hr. The results of wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) showed amorphous structures for PPO and SPPO while the peak intensity decreased after sulfonation. The proton conductivity of these SPPO membranes was measured as 1.16 × 10?2 S/cm at ambient temperature, which is comparable to that of Nafion 112 at similar conditions and in the range needed for high‐performance fuel cell proton exchange membranes. Summary: Based on Flory–Huggins parameters (χ), the miscibility and the effect of morphological change on proton conductivity and methanol permeability of partially sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) and partially sulfonated poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (SPPO), having an identical ion exchange capacity, were investigated. When 50 wt.‐% of SPPO was blended, both the proton conductivity and methanol permeability had the highest values, which resulted from the change of amorphous domains and the hydrogen bonding between the two ionomers.

The proton conductivities, water uptake and methanol permeability for the SPPO/SPS blend membranes studied here. The membranes with 50 wt.‐% SPPO clearly showed the greatest increase in these properties.  相似文献

Multiblock copolymers 1a (Mn = 31,500–47,400) of sulfonated poly(aryl ether)s were synthesized by polycondensation of 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone (DFBP), bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)sulfone (BHPS), and an hydroxy‐terminated sulfonated oligomer, which was synthesized from DFBP and 2,2′,3,3′,5,5′‐hexaphenyl‐4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl a . The copolymerization of trimeric monomer b with DFBP and BHPS gave a series of copolymers 1b (Mn = 26,200–45,900). The copolymers were then sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid to give ionomers 3a with hydrophilic multiblock segments and ionomers 3b with segments containing clusters of 18 sulfonic acid groups. The proton exchange membranes cast from ionomers 3a and 3b were characterized with regard to thermal stability, water uptake, proton conductivity, and morphology. Transmission electron microscopy images of 3a‐1 and 3b‐1 revealed a phase separation similar to that of Nafion that may explain their higher proton conductivities compared with randomly sulfonated copolymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel sulfonated diamine, 4,4′‐bis(4‐amino‐3‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) biphenyl 3,3′‐disulfonic acid (F‐BAPBDS), was successfully synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl with 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride, followed by reduction and sulfonation. A series of sulfonated polyimides of high molecular weight (SPI‐x, x represents the molar percentage of the sulfonated monomer) were prepared by copolymerization of 1,4,5,8‐naphathlenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA) with F‐BAPBDS and nonsulfonated diamine. Flexible and tough membranes of high mechanical strength were obtained by solution casting and the electrolyte properties of the polymers were intensively investigated. The copolymer membranes exhibited excellent oxidative stability due to the introducing of the CF3 groups. The SPI membranes displayed desirable proton conductivity (0.52×10−1–0.97×10−1 S·cm−1) and low methanol permeability (less than 2.8×10−7 cm2·s−1). The highest proton conductivity (1.89×10−1 S·cm−1) was obtained for the SPI‐90 membrane at 80°C, with an IEC of 2.12 mequiv/g. This value is higher than that of Nafion 117 (1.7×10−1 S·cm−1). Furthermore, the hydrolytic stability of the obtained SPIs is better than the BDSA and ODADS based SPIs due to the hydrophobic CF3 groups which protect the imide ring from being attacked by water molecules, in spite of its strong electron‐withdrawing behaviors.  相似文献

A novel process comprising the UV‐induced photografting of styrene into poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films and subsequent sulfonation has been developed for preparing proton‐conducting membranes. Although under UV irradiation the initial radicals were mainly generated on the surface of the PTFE films by the action of photosensitizers such as xanthone and benzoyl peroxide, the graft chains were readily propagated into the PTFE films. The sulfonation of the grafted films was performed in a chlorosulfonic acid solution. Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the grafted and sulfonated membranes. With a view to use in fuel cells, the proton conductivity, water uptake, and mechanical properties of the prepared membranes were measured. Even through the degree of grafting was lower than 10%, the proton conductivity in the thickness direction of the newly prepared membranes could reach a value similar to that of a Nafion membrane. In comparison with γ‐ray radiation grafting, UV‐induced photografting is very simple and safe and is less damaging to the membranes because significant degradation of the PTFE main chains can be avoided.
