Three simple structured D‐A copolymers, PBTBTz‐1 , PBTBTz‐2 , and PBTBTz‐3 , containing bithiophene (BT) donor unit and bithiazole (BTz) acceptor unit with different alkyl chain length were synthesized by the Pd‐catalyzed Stille‐coupling method. The copolymers were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, UV–vis absorption, electrochemical cyclic voltammetry, and photovoltaic measurements. The results indicate that the introduction of BTz unit to the polythiophene main chain effectively decreases highest occupied molecular orbital levels of the copolymers and increases the open circuit voltage (Voc) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the copolymers as donor, and the alkyl chain length influences the photovoltaic properties of the polymers significantly. The PSCs based on PBTBTz‐2 and PBTBTz‐3 show higher Voc up to 0.77 and 0.81 V, respectively. The power conversion efficiency of the PSC based on PBTBTz‐2 :PC70BM = 1:1(w/w) reached 2.58% with short circuit current of 8.70 mA/cm2, under the illumination of AM1.5, 100 mW/cm2. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of low‐band‐gap (LBG) donor–accepor conjugated main‐chain copolymers ( P1 – P4 ) containing planar 2,7‐carbazole as electron donors and bithiazole units (4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole and 4,4′‐dihexyl‐5,5′‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐2,2′‐bithiazole) as electron acceptors were synthesized and studied for the applications in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. The effects of electron deficient bithiazole units on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic (PV) properties of these LBG copolymers were investigated. Absorption spectra revealed that polymers P1 – P4 exhibited broad absorption bands in UV and visible regions from 300 to 600 nm with optical band gaps in the range of 1.93–1.99 eV, which overlapped with the major region of the solar emission spectrum. Moreover, carbazole‐based polymers P1 – P4 showed low values of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels, which provided good air stability and high open circuit voltages (Voc) in the PV applications. The BHJ PV devices were fabricated using polymers P1 – P4 as electron donors and (6,6)‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or (6,6)‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as electron acceptors in different weight ratios. The PV device bearing an active layer of polymer blend P4:PC71BM (1:1.5 w/w) showed the best power conversion efficiency value of 1.01% with a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 4.83 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 35%, and Voc = 0.60 V under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Five novel conjugated copolymers ( P1 – P5 ) containing coplanar cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) units (incorporated with arylcyanovinyl and keto groups in different molar ratios) were synthesized and developed for the applications of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Polymers P1 – P5 covered broad absorption ranges from UV to near infrared (400–900 nm) with narrow optical band gaps of 1.38–1.70 eV, which are compatible with the maximum solar photon reflux. Partially reversible p‐ and n‐doping processes of P1 – P5 in electrochemical experiments were observed, and the proper molecular design for highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of P1 – P5 induced the highest photovoltaic open‐circuit voltage in the PSC devices, compared with those previously reported CPDT‐based narrow‐band‐gap polymers. Powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analyses suggested that these copolymers formed self‐assembled π‐π stacking and pseudobilayered structures. Under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination, bulk heterojunction PSC devices containing an active layer of electron donor polymers P1 – P5 mixed with electron acceptor [6,6]‐phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in the weight ratio of 1:4 were investigated. The PSC device containing P1 gave the best preliminary result with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.84 V, a short‐circuit current of 2.36 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.38, offering an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.77% as well as a maximal quantum efficiency of 23% from the external quantum efficiency (EQE) measurements. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel narrow‐band‐gap copolymers ( P1 ‐ P12 ) composed of alkyl‐substituted fluorene (FO) units and six analogous mono‐ and bis(2‐aryl‐2‐cyanovinyl)‐10‐hexylphenothiazine monomers ( M1 ‐ M6 ) were synthesized by a palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction with two different feed in ratios of FO to M1 ‐ M6 (molar ratio = 3:1 and 1:1). The absorption spectra of polymers P1 ‐ P12 exhibited broad peaks located in the UV and visible regions from 400 to 800 nm with optical band gaps at 1.55–2.10 eV, which fit near the wavelength of the maximum solar photon reflux. Electrochemical experiments displayed that the reversible p‐ and n‐doping processes of copolymers were partially reversible, and the proper HOMO/LUMO levels enabled a high photovoltaic open‐circuit voltage. As blended with [6,6]‐phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as an electron acceptor in bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices, narrow‐band‐gap polymers P1 ‐ P12 as electron donors showed significant photovoltaic performance which varied with the intramolecular donor‐acceptor interaction and their mixing ratios to PCBM. Under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination, the device of copolymer P12 produced the highest preliminary result having an open‐circuit voltage of 0.64 V, a short‐circuit current of 2.70 mA/cm2, a fill factor of 0.29, and an energy conversion efficiency of 0.51%. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new low‐bandgap alternating copolymers (CEHTF and CEHTP) consisting of 4,6‐bis(3′‐(2‐ethylhexyl)thien‐2′‐yl)thieno[3,4‐c][1,2,5] thiadiazole and 9,9‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)fluorene or 2,5‐bis(isopentyloxy)benzene were synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction of corresponding comonomers. Their optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic (PV) properties were studied and are reported. Both the copolymers exhibited long‐wavelength absorption covering the whole visible spectral region, which is in CEHTP thin films extended up to near infrared region, ambipolar redox properties, and electrochromism. High‐electron affinities and low‐optical bandgap values, 1.37 and 1.15 eV, were determined for CEHTF and CEHTP, respectively. PV devices with bulk heterojunction made of blends of copolymers and fullerene derivative [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester ([60]PCBM) were prepared and characterized. Effects of intramolecular charge transfer strength and side‐chain nature and length on photophysical properties are discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new phenothiazine‐based donor–acceptor copolymers, P1 and P2, were synthesized via a Suzuki coupling reaction. The weight‐averaged molecular weights (Mw) of P1 and P2 were found to be 16,700 and 16,100, with polydispersity indices of 1.74 and 1.39, respectively. The UV–visible absorption spectra of the polymer thin films contained three strong absorption bands in the ranges 318–320 nm, 430–436 nm, and 527–568 nm. The absorption peaks at 320 and 430 nm originated mainly from the phenothiazine‐based monomer units, and the longer wavelength absorption band at 527–568 nm was attributed to the increased effective conjugation length of the polymer backbones. Solution‐processed field‐effect transistors fabricated with these polymers exhibited p‐type organic thin film transistor characteristics. The field‐effect mobilities of P1 and P2 were measured to be 1.0 × 10?4 and 7.5 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively, with on/off ratios in the order of 104 for all polymers. A photovoltaic device in which a P2/PC71BM (1/3) blend film was used as the active layer exhibited an open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.70 V, a short‐circuit current (JSC) of 6.79 mA cm(2, a fill factor of 0.39, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.86% under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm?2) illumination. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel series of thiazolothiazole (Tz)‐based copolymers, poly[9,9‐didecylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P1), poly[9,9‐dioctyldibenzosilole‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P2), and poly[4,4′‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)‐dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]silole‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P3), were synthesized for the use as donor materials in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The field‐effect carrier mobilities and the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers were investigated. The results suggest that the donor units in the copolymers significantly influenced the band gap, electronic energy levels, carrier mobilities, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers. The band gaps of the copolymers were in the range of 1.80–2.14 eV. Under optimized conditions, the Tz‐based polymers showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for the PSCs in the range of 2.23–2.75% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm2). Among the three copolymers, P1, which contained a fluorene donor unit, showed a PCE of 2.75% with a short‐circuit current of 8.12 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage of 0.86 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.39, under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm2). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To exploit an effective way to improve polymeric photovoltaic performance, a series of dithiophene‐benzothiadiazole‐alt‐fluorene copolymers containing carbazole groups at C‐9 positions of the alternating fluorene units (PFO‐FCz‐DBT) were synthesized and characterized. The effect of the carbazole groups on the optophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of these copolymers was investigated. By comparison, this type of copolymers with carbazole units exhibited significantly improved photovoltaic properties than poly(2,7‐(9,9‐dioctyl‐fluorene)‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole) (PFO‐DBT) in the bulk heterojunction solar cells. A maximum power‐conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.41% and a highest short‐circuit current density (Jsc) of 9.68 mA cm?2 were obtained for the PFO‐FCz‐DBT30, which are about two times higher than the corresponding levels for the PFO‐DBT30. This work demonstrated that introducing a hole‐transporting carbazole unit into copolymer is a simple and effective method to improve the Jsc and PCE. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two novel multicomponent copolymers ( P1 and P2 ) containing polyfluorene (PF), oligo(phenylenevinylene) ( OPV ), and porphyrin ( Por ) derivatives were synthesized according to the Suzuki polymerization method. The structures, optical, and electrochemical properties of the two model compounds ( OPV and Por ) and multicomponent copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis, UV–vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Both of the copolymers exhibit thermotropic liquid crystalline properties and represent the characteristic Schlieren textures in a wide temperature range. Electroluminescence spectra of these copolymers exhibit broadband emissions covering the entire visible region from 400 to 700 nm. The single layer polymer light emitting diodes device based on P2 with a configuration of indium tin oxide/poly(ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid)/polymers/Ca/Al emits white light with the Commission Internationale de l′Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of (0.29, 0.30), maximum brightness of 443 cd/m2. The white‐light‐emitting devices based on the novel multicomponent copolymers exhibit low turn‐on voltage, and good color stability at different driving voltages as well. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of alternating copolymers of electron‐rich arylamine and electron‐deficient 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole (BT), PV‐BT, DP‐BT, and TP‐BT, were synthesized by Heck coupling reaction. UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra show that the copolymerization of electron‐rich diphenylamine (DP), triphenylamine (TP), MEH‐PV (PV), and electron‐deficient BT results in low‐bandgap conjugated polymers. Within the three copolymers of PV‐BT, DP‐BT, and TP‐BT, TP‐BT possesses the highest hole mobility of 4.68 × 10? 5 cm2/V, as determined from the space charge limited current (SCLC) model. The bulk heterojunction‐typed polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated with the blend of the copolymers and PCBM as the photosensitive layer. The power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of the PSCs based on PV‐BT, DP‐BT, and TP‐BT reached 0.26%, 0.39%, and 0.52%, respectively, under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2. The results indicate that TP‐BT is a promising photovoltaic polymer for PSCs. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 3861–3871, 2007  相似文献

New semiconducting copolymers, poly((TIPS‐ADT)‐(4,4′‐didodecyl‐2,2′‐bithiophene)) (PTADT2) and poly((TIPS‐ADT)‐(2,2′‐(4,4′‐didodecyl‐2,2′‐bithiophene)dithiophene)) (PTADT4) , produced by incorporating 5,11‐bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) anthra[2,3‐b:7,6‐b']dithiophene (TIPS‐ADT) and alkyl‐thiophene derivatives were synthesized via Stille coupling polymerization. The optical, electrochemical, structural, field‐effect transistor, and solar cell properties of the polymers were investigated. The polymers showed good solubility at room temperature in common organic solvents due to their abundant side groups including TIPS and dodecyl side chains. Both polymers showed very broad UV absorption spectra covering the spectral range from 300 to 750 nm as a result of the combination of the different absorption ranges of the TIPS‐ADT unit (short wavelength region) and thiophene derivatives (long wavelength region). The FET device fabricated using PTADT4 containing additional unsubstituted thiophene rings as a spacer between TIPS‐ADT and thiophene derivatives showed a higher hole mobility (5.7 × 10?4 cm2/V s) than the PTADT2 device (2.8 × 10?5 cm2/V s), due to the improved intermolecular ordering caused by the reduced steric hindrance between bulky side chain groups. In addition, the PTADT4 :(6,6)‐phenyl‐C70‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM) device showed an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.30% compared with the PTADT2 :PC70BM device (PCE of 0.55%) under AM 1.5G irradiation (100 mW/cm2). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new low‐band gap copolymers based on dioctyloxybenzo[1,2‐b;3,4‐b′] dithiophene and bis(2‐thienyl)‐2,3‐diphenylbenzo[g]quinoxaline monomers have been synthesized via a Stille reaction. The effect of different functional groups attached to bis(2‐thienyl)‐2,3‐diphenylbenzo[g]quinoxaline was investigated and compared with their optical, electrochemical, hole mobility, and photovoltaic properties. Polymer solar cell (PSC) devices of the copolymers were fabricated with a configuration of ITO/ PEDOT: PSS/copolymers: PCBM (1:4 wt ratio)/Ca/Al. The best performance of the PSC device was obtained by using PbttpmobQ as the active layer. A power conversion efficiency of 1.42% with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.8 V, a short‐circuit current (JSC) of 5.73 mA cm−2, and a fill factor of 30.9% was achieved under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW cm−2. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two novel low band gap conjugated copolymers containing porphyrins, thiophenes, and 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole ( BTZ ) moieties were synthesized and applied in bulk heterojunction solar cells. The thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the two copolymers were examined to investigate the effect of the introduction of BTZ moiety in the backbone of the porphyrin polymers. The copolymers exhibited good thermal stability and film‐forming ability. The absorption spectra indicated that the BTZ moiety has significant influence on the UV–visible region spectra of the copolymers: with increasing the molar amount of BTZ moieties in conjugated main chain, the absorption in the range of 450–700 nm is largely broadened and red‐shifted compared to the similar polymers without BTZ moiety, and the optical band gaps of copolymers were narrowed to ~1.50 eV. The photoluminescence spectra showed that there is effective charge transfer in the whole conjugated main chain. Cyclic voltammetry displayed that the band gaps were reduced effectively by the introduction of the BTZ moieties. The bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated based on the blend of the copolymers and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) in a 1:2 weight ratio. The maximum power conversion efficiency of 0.91% was obtained by using P2 as the electron donor under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated using a ternary blend film consisting two conjugated polymers and a soluble fullerene derivative as the donor and acceptor materials, respectively. And, to compare ternary blend system, the single‐component copolymers consisting of the repeating units of each of the copolymers, used in ternary blend solar cells, were designed and synthesized for use as the electron donor materials in binary blend solar cells. We systematically investigated the field‐effect carrier mobilities and the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers. Under optimized conditions, the binary blend polymer systems showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for the PSCs in the range 3.87–4.16% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm?2). All polymers exhibited similar PCEs that did not depend on the ratio of repeating units. The binary blend solar cell containing a single‐component copolymer as the electron donor material performed better than the ternary blend solar cell in this work. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new quinoxaline‐based polymers, poly[1,5‐didecyloxynaphthalene‐alt‐5,5′‐(5,8‐dithiophen‐2‐yl)‐2,3‐bis(4‐octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline (PNQx‐p) and poly[1,5‐didecyloxynaphthalene‐alt‐5,5′‐(5,8‐dithiophen‐2‐yl)‐2,3‐bis(3‐octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline (PNQx‐m), were synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction and characterized. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that these polymers are thermally stable with degradation temperature up to 320 °C. As evident from the electrochemical and optical studies, the copolymers have comparable optical band gap (~2 eV) and nearly similar deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of ?5.59 (PNQx‐p) and ?5.61 eV (PNQx‐p). The resulting copolymers possessed relatively low HOMO energy levels promising good air stability and high open circuit voltage (Voc) for photovoltaic applications. The optimized photovoltaic device with a structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PNQx‐m:PC71BM (1:2, w/w)/LiF/Al shows a power conversion efficiency up to 2.29% with a short circuit current density of 5.61 mA/cm2, an Voc of 0.93 V and a fill factor of 43.73% under an illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2. The efficiency of the PNQx‐m polymer improved from 2.29 to 2.95% using 1,8‐diiodoocane as an additive (0.25%). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

Besides the donor–acceptor (D–A) type, acceptor–acceptor (A–A) polymers are another class of important alternative conjugated copolymers, but have been less studied in the past. In this study, two kinds of A–A polymers, P1 and P2 , have been designed and synthesized based on diketopyrrolopyrrole in combination with the second electron‐deficient unit, perylenediimide or thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione. UV–vis absorption spectroscopy revealed that these two kinds of polymers have a band gap of 1.28–1.33 eV. Their highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels are around ?5.6 and ?4.0 eV for P1 polymers, whereas ?5.4 and ?3.7 eV for P2 polymers, respectively. Density functional theory study disclosed that P1 backbone is in a vastly twisting state, whereas that of P2 is completely planar. Furthermore, organic field‐effect transistor devices were fabricated using these two kinds of polymers as the active material. Of interest, the devices based on P1 polymers displayed n‐channel behaviors with an electron mobility in the order of 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1. In contrast, the P2 ‐based devices exhibited only p‐channel charge transportation characteristics with a hole mobility in the order of 10?3 cm2 V?1 s?1. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. We have synthesized two cyclopentadithiophene (CDT)‐based low bandgap copolymers, poly[(4,4‐bis(2‐ethyl‐hexyl)‐4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl)‐alt‐(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole‐4,7‐diyl)] (PCBSe) and poly[(4,4‐bis(2‐ethyl‐hexyl)‐4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl)‐alt‐(4,7‐dithiophen‐2‐yl‐benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole‐5,5′‐diyl)] (PCT2BSe), for use in photovoltaic applications. Through the internal charge transfer interaction between the electron‐donating CDT unit and the electron‐accepting benzoselenadiazole, we realized exceedingly low bandgap polymers with bandgaps of 1.37–1.46 eV. The UV–vis absorption maxima of PCT2BSe were subjected to larger hypsochromic shifts than those of PCBSe, because of the distorted electron donor–acceptor (D–A) structures of the PCT2BSe backbone. These results were supported by the calculations of the D–A complex using the ab initio Hartree‐Fock method with a split‐valence 6‐31G* basis set. However, PCT2BSe exhibited a better molar absorption coefficient in the visible region, which can lead to more efficient absorption of sunlight. As a result, PCT2BSe blended with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) exhibited a better photovoltaic performance than PCBSe because of the larger spectral overlap integral with respect to the solar spectrum. Furthermore, when the polymers were blended with PC71BM, PCT2BSe showed the best performance, with an open circuit voltage of 0.55 V, a short‐circuit current of 6.63 mA/cm2, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.34% under air mass 1.5 global illumination conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four novel two‐dimensional (2D) donor–acceptor (D‐A) type copolymers with different conjugated side chains, P1 , P2 , P3 , and P4 (see Fig. 1 ), are designed and synthesized for the application as donor materials in polymer solar cells (PSCs). To the best of our knowledge, there were few reports to systematically study such 2D polymers with D‐A type main chains in this area. The optical energy band gaps are about 2.0 eV for P1 – P3 and 1.67 eV for P4 . PSC devices using P1 – P4 as donor and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor in a weight ratio of 1:3 were fabricated and characterized to investigate the photovoltaic properties of the polymers. Under AM 1.5 G, 100 mA/cm2 illumination, a high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.9 V was recorded for P3 ‐based device due to its low HOMO level, and moderate fill factor was obtained with the best value of 58.6% for P4 ‐based device, which may mainly be the result of the high hole mobility of the polymers (up to 1.82 × 10?3 cm2/V s). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, donor–acceptor random polymers containing benzotriazole acceptor and bistriphenylamine and benzodithiophene donors, P1 and P2 , were successfully synthesized by Stille coupling polymerization. The effect of bistriphenylamine moiety and thiophene π‐conjugated linker on electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and optical behaviors of the polymers were investigated. Optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance of the polymers were examined under the illumination of AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm?2. The polymers were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV‐Vis‐NIR absorption spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography. HOMO/LUMO energy levels of P1 and P2 were calculated as ?5.47 eV/–3.41 eV and ?5.43 eV/–3.27 eV, respectively. Bulk heterojunction type solar cells were constructed using blends of the polymers (donor) and [6,6]‐phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) (acceptor). Photovoltaic studies showed that the highest power conversion efficiency of these photovoltaic devices were recorded as 3.50% with open circuit voltage; 0.79 V, short circuit current; 9.45 mA cm?2, fill factor; 0.53 for P1 :PC71BM (1:2, w/w) in 3% o‐dichlorobenzene (o‐DCB) solution and 3.15% with open circuit voltage; 0.75 V, short circuit current; 8.59 mA cm?2, fill factor; 0.49 for P2 :PC71BM (1:2, w/w) in 2% chlorobenzene (CB) solution. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel soluble donor‐acceptor low‐bandgap‐conjugated polymers consisting of different oligothiophene (OTh) coupled to electron‐accepting moiety 2‐pyran‐4‐ylidenemalononitrile (PM)‐based unit were synthesized by Stille or Suzuki coupling polymerization. The combination of electron‐accepting PM building block with varied OThn (the number of thiophene unit increases from 3 to 5) results in enhanced π–π stacking in solid state and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition, which lead to an extension of the absorption spectra of the copolymers. Cyclic voltammetry measurements and molecular orbital distribution calculations indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) energy levels could be fine‐tuned by changing the number of thiophene units of the copolymers, and the resulting copolymers possessed relatively low HOMO energy levels promising good air stability and high‐open circuit voltage (Voc) for photovoltaic application. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated by using the copolymers as donors and (6,6)‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor. It was found that the highest Voc reached 0.94 V, and the short circuit currents (Jsc) were improved from 1.78 to 2.54 mA/cm2, though the power conversion efficiencies of the devices were measured between 0.61 and 0.99% under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm2, which indicated that this series copolymers can be promising candidates for the photovoltaic applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
