Approximation of functions on the sphere arises in almost all applications modeling data collected on the surface of the earth and for reconstruction of various processes in spherical coordinates. Constructive approximation of high dimensional spherical functions are useful for approximation of processes of several variables on a compact subset of a Euclidean space by mapping the data onto the unit sphere of a space having one higher dimension, avoiding the boundary effect of the set. Interpolation operators on the circle and periodic domains (based on a class of basis functions and data values) are essential for many high performance simulations. These operators are represented by analytical summation formulas that can be computed very efficiently using the fast Fourier transform. This work is concerned with construction of a similar class of interpolation and quasi-interpolation operators on the unit sphere in ℝq , for q = 3, 4, 5, · · ·, using a new class of basis functions. In a previous paper a preconditioning strategy based on overlapping domain decomposition was applied to the Galerkin approximation of elliptic partial differential equations on the sphere. In this paper the methods are extended to more general pseudodifferential equations on the sphere, using as before spherical radial basis functions for the approximation space, and again preconditioning the ill-conditioned linear systems of the Galerkin approximation by the additive Schwarz method. Numerical results are presented for the case of hypersingular and weakly singular integral operators on the sphere \mathbbS2{\mathbb{S}^2} .  相似文献

The separation of a system of three elasticity theory equations in the static case to a system of two equations and one independent equation for a space with a radial inhomogeneity is presented in a spherical coordinate system. These equations are solved by separation of variables for specific kinds of radial inhomogeneity. In particular, solutions are found for the Lamé coefficients μ = const, λ (ifr) is an arbitrary function, μ = μorβ, λ = λorβ.While methods of solving problems associated with the equilibrium of an elastic homogeneous sphere have been studied sufficiently [1], problems with spherical symmetry of the boundary conditions have mainly been solved for an inhomogeneous sphere [2, 3],For a particular kind of inhomogeneity dependent on one Cartesian coordinate, the equations have been separated completely in [4], A system of three equations with a radial inhomogeneity in a spherical coordinate system is separated below by a method analogous to [4].  相似文献

We consider the problem of approximately reconstructing a function f defined on the surface of the unit sphere in the Euclidean space ℝq +1 by using samples of f at scattered sites. A central role is played by the construction of a new operator for polynomial approximation, which is a uniformly bounded quasi‐projection in the de la Vallée Poussin style, i.e. it reproduces spherical polynomials up to a certain degree and has uniformly bounded Lp operator norm for 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞. Using certain positive quadrature rules for scattered sites due to Mhaskar, Narcowich and Ward, we discretize this operator obtaining a polynomial approximation of the target function which can be computed from scattered data and provides the same approximation degree of the best polynomial approximation. To establish the error estimates we use Marcinkiewicz–Zygmund inequalities, which we derive from our continuous approximating operator. We give concrete bounds for all constants in the Marcinkiewicz–Zygmund inequalities as well as in the error estimates. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The Spherical Code (SC) problem has many important applications in such fields as physics, molecular biology, signal transmission, chemistry, engineering and mathematics. This paper presents a bilevel optimization formulation of the SC problem. Based on this formulation, the concept of balanced spherical code is introduced and a new approach, the Point Balance Algorithm (PBA), is presented to search for a 1-balanced spherical code. Since an optimal solution of the SC problem (an extremal spherical code) must be a 1-balanced spherical code, PBA can be applied easily to search for an extremal spherical code. In addition, given a certain criterion, PBA can generate efficiently an approximate optimal spherical code on a sphere in the n-dimensional space n. Some implementation issues of PBA are discussed and putative global optimal solutions of the Fekete problem in 3, 4 and 5-dimensional space are also reported. Finally, an open question about the geometry of Fekete points on the unit sphere in the 3-dimensional space is posed.  相似文献

The direct and inverse theorems are established for the best approximation in the weighted Lp space on the unit sphere of Rd+1, in which the weight functions are invariant under finite reflection groups. The theorems are stated using a modulus of smoothness of higher order, which is proved to be equivalent to a K-functional defined using the power of the spherical h-Laplacian. Furthermore, similar results are also established for weighted approximation on the unit ball and on the simplex of Rd.  相似文献

Bounds are provided on how well functions in Sobolev spaces on the sphere can be approximated by spherical splines, where a spherical spline of degree d is a C r function whose pieces are the restrictions of homogeneous polynomials of degree d to the sphere. The bounds are expressed in terms of appropriate seminorms defined with the help of radial projection, and are obtained using appropriate quasi-interpolation operators.  相似文献

In this paper, the concept of a finite mass-points system∑N(H(A))(N>n) being in a sphere in an n-dimensional hyperbolic space Hn and a finite mass-points system∑N(S(A))(N>n) being in a hyperplane in an n-dimensional spherical space Sn is introduced, then, the rank of the Cayley-Menger matrix AN(H)(or a AN(S)) of the finite mass-points system∑∑N(S(A))(or∑N(S(A))) in an n-dimensional hyperbolic space Hn (or spherical space Sn) is no more than n 2 when∑N(H(A))(N>n) (or∑N(S(A))(N>n)) are in a sphere (or hyperplane). On the one hand, the Yang-Zhang's inequalities, the Neuberg-Pedoe's inequalities and the inequality of the metric addition in an n-dimensional hyperbolic space Hn and in an n-dimensional spherical space Sn are established by the method of characteristic roots. These are basic inequalities in hyperbolic geometry and spherical geometry. On the other hand, some relative problems and conjectures are brought.  相似文献

In this paper, we are interested in extending the study of spherical curves in R 3 to the submanifolds in the Euclidean space R n+p . More precisely, we are interested in obtaining conditions under which an n-dimensional compact submanifold M of a Euclidean space R n+p lies on the hypersphere S n+p−1(c) (standardly imbedded sphere in R n+p of constant curvature c). As a by-product we also get an estimate on the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian operator Δ of the submanifold (cf. Theorem 3.5) as well as a characterization for an n-dimensional sphere S n (c) (cf. Theorem 4.1).  相似文献

A sharp Jackson inequality in the space Lp(?d), 1 ≤ p < 2, with Dunkl weight is proved. The best approximation is realized by entire functions of exponential spherical type. The modulus of continuity is defined by means of a generalized shift operator bounded on Lp, which was constructed earlier by the authors. In the case of the unit weight, this operator coincides with the mean-value operator on the sphere.

The following problem arises in thermoacoustic tomography and has intimate connection with PDEs and integral geometry. Reconstruct a function f supported in an n-dimensional ball B given the spherical means of f over all geodesic spheres centered on the boundary of B. We propose a new approach to this problem, which yields explicit reconstruction formulas in arbitrary constant curvature space, including euclidean space ? n , the n-dimensional sphere, and hyperbolic space. The main idea is analytic continuation of the corresponding operator families. The results are applied to inverse problems for a large class of Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations in constant curvature spaces of arbitrary dimension.  相似文献

We prove that their logarithmic terms vanish in all cases and, further, that the circle bundles are not diffeomorphic to the unit sphere in \mathbb Cn{\mathbb C^n} for Grassmannian manifolds of higher ranks. In particular, they provide an infinite family of smoothly bounded strictly pseudoconvex domains on complex manifolds for which the logarithmic term in the Fefferman expansion of the Szeg? kernel vanishes but whose boundary is not diffeomorphic to the sphere (in fact, it is not even locally spherical). The analogous results for the Bergman kernel are also obtained.  相似文献

We give upper bounds for the deviation of the norm of a perturbed error functional from the norm of the original error of a higher-dimensional spherical cubature formula. The deviation arises as a result of the combined influence on the computation of small variations of the weights of the cubature formula and rounding for the subsequent calculation of the cubature sum in the given standards of approximation to real numbers. We estimate the practical error of the cubature formula for its action on an arbitrary function in the unit ball of the normed space of integrands. The resulting estimates are applied to studying the practical error of spherical cubature formulas in the case of integrands in Sobolev-type spaces on the higher-dimensional unit sphere. We represent the norm of the error functional in the dual space of the Sobolev class as a positive definite quadratic form in the weights of the cubature formula. We estimate the practical error for spherical cubature formulas, each of which is constructed as the direct product of Gauss’s quadrature formula along the meridian of the sphere and of the rectangle quadrature formula along the equator. The weights of this direct product with 2m 2 nodes are positive. The formula itself is exact at all spherical harmonics up to order 2m ? 1.  相似文献

In this article, working with the sphere 𝕊 d embedded in the (d + 1)-dimensional Euclidean space ? d+1 as the underlying manifold, we obtain an error estimate for interpolating functions f ∈ H μ from shifts of a smooth positive definite function defined on 𝕊 d , where H μ is a Sobolev space. We also get an L p error estimate for f by using a method of Duchon framework.  相似文献

We show the space of expanding Blaschke products on S1 is compactified by a sphere of invariant measures, reminiscent of the sphere of geodesic currents for a hyperbolic surface. More generally, we develop a dynamical compactification for the Teichmüller space of all measure preserving topological covering maps of S1. Research supported in part by the NSF.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with numerical integration on the unit sphere Sr of dimension r≥2 in the Euclidean space ℝr+1. We consider the worst-case cubature error, denoted by E(Qm;Hs(Sr)), of an arbitrary m-point cubature rule Qm for functions in the unit ball of the Sobolev space Hs(Sr), where s>, and show that The positive constant cs,r in the estimate depends only on the sphere dimension r≥2 and the index s of the Sobolev space Hs(Sr). This result was previously only known for r=2, in which case the estimate is order optimal. The method of proof is constructive: we construct for each Qm a `bad' function fm, that is, a function which vanishes in all nodes of the cubature rule and for which Our proof uses a packing of the sphere Sr with spherical caps, as well as an interpolation result between Sobolev spaces of different indices.  相似文献

Generalized discrepancies are a class of discrepancies introduced in the seminal paper [1] to measure uniformity of points over the unit sphere in ℝ3. However, convergence to 0 of this quantity has been shown only in the case of spherical t –designs. In the following, we completely characterize sequences for which convergence to 0 of D (𝒫N ; A ) holds. The interest of this result is that, when evaluating uniformity on the sphere, generalized discrepancies are much simpler to compute than the well-known spherical cap discrepancy. Let S d-1 denote the (d − 1)-dimensional unit sphere centered at the origin of the d-dimensional Euclidean space. Let 0 < α < π. A set P of points in S d-1 is called almost α-equidistant if among any three points of P there is at least one pair lying at spherical distance α. In this note we prove upper bounds on the cardinality of P depending only on d. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
