Living cationic polymerization of fluorine‐containing vinyl ethers [CH2?CH? O? C2H4? O? C3H6? CnF2n+1: 5FVE (n = 2), 13FVE (n = 6)] was investigated in various solvents with a CH3CH(OiBu)OCOCH3/Et1.5AlCl1.5 initiating system in the presence of an added base. 5FVE was polymerized quantitatively in toluene at 0 °C, and the obtained polymers had predetermined molecular weights with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.1). On the other hand, for the polymerization of 13FVE, the product polymers precipitated due to their extremely poor solubility in nonfluorinated organic solvents. Therefore, fluorinated solvents such as hydrochlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, hydrofluoroethers, or α,α,α‐trifluorotoluene, as‐yet uninvestigated for cationic polymerization, were employed. In these solvents, living polymerization was achieved even with 13FVE, yielding well‐defined polymers (Mw/Mn < 1.1, by size exclusion chromatography using a fluorinated solvent as an eluent). The solvents were also shown to be good for living polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether. The obtained fluorine‐containing polymers underwent temperature‐responsive solubility transitions in organic solvents. Poly(5FVE) showed sensitive upper critical solution temperature (UCST)‐type phase separation behavior in toluene. Copolymers of 13FVE and isobutyl vinyl ether showed UCST‐type phase separation in common organic solvents with different polarities depending on their composition, while a homopolymer of 13FVE was insoluble in all nonfluorinated organic solvents. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various types of fluorine‐containing star‐shaped poly(vinyl ether)s were successfully synthesized by crosslinking reactions of living polymers based on living cationic polymerization. Star polymers with fluorinated arm chains were prepared by the reaction between a divinyl ether and living poly(vinyl ether)s with fluorine groups (C4F9, C6F13, and C8F17) at the side chain using cationogen/Et1.5AlCl1.5 in a fluorinated solvent (dichloropentafluoropropanes), giving star‐shaped fluorinated polymers in high yields with a relatively narrow molecular weight distribution. The concentration of living polymers for the crosslinking reaction and the molar feed ratio of a bifunctional vinyl ether to living polymers affected the yield and molecular weight of the star polymers. Star polymers with block arms were prepared by a linking reaction of living block copolymers of a fluorinated segment and a nonfluorinated segment. Heteroarm star‐shaped polymers containing two‐ or three‐arm species were synthesized using a mixture of different living polymer species for the reaction with a bifunctional vinyl ether. The obtained polymers underwent temperature‐induced solubility transitions in various organic solvents, and their concentrated solutions underwent sol–gel transitions, based on the solubility transition of a thermoresponsive fluorinated segment. Furthermore, a slight amount of fluorine groups were shown to be effective for physical gelation when those were located at the arm ends of a star polymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tetrakis(4‐(1‐bromoethyl)phenyl)silane is synthesized and utilized to initiate the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to generate bromo‐terminated four‐armed PMMA macroinitiators, which further initiate the ATRP of methylacryloyloxyl‐2‐hydroxypropyl perfluorooctanoate (FGOA) to create fluorinated star‐shaped block copolymers PMMA‐b‐poly(FGOA)s with fluorine content ranging from 0 to 31.7 wt %. The polymerizations are well controlled with the polydispersity indices <1.30. The polymers readily dissolve in common organic solvents and show good film‐formation. Compared with the nonfluorinated sample, the fluorinated films exhibit significantly increased water contact angles owing to the enrichment of fluorine on the surface. The enhanced hydrophobicity is advantageous for the optical stability when the devices work under a moist environment. Moreover, the films possess high thermo‐optic coefficients, tunable refractive indices, and extremely low birefringence coefficients because of the presence of bulky and rigid tetraphenylsilane core and star‐shaped topological structure, showing potential application in optical waveguide devices. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of perfluoro‐3‐methylene‐2,4‐dioxabicyclo[3,3,0] octane (D), its radical homopolymerization, and copolymerization with fluoroolefins are presented. Fluorodioxolane (D) was synthesized through direct fluorination of the corresponding hydrocarbon precursor in a fluorinated solvent by F2/N2 gas. It was polymerized in bulk using perfluorodibenzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The resulting homopolymer had a limited solubility in fluorinated solvents, and its glass transition temperature (Tg) was in the range of 180–190 °C. The polymeric films prepared by casting from hot hexafluorobenzene (HFB) solution were transparent with low refractive index (1.329 at 633 nm). These films were thermally stable (Td > 350 °C), and were hard and brittle. The copolymers of monomer (D) were prepared with fluorovinyl monomers such as chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), perfluoropropyl vinyl ether, perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, and vinylidene fluoride. The kinetics of radical copolymerization of monomer (D) with CTFE led to the assessment of the reactivity ratios of both comonomers: rD = 3.635 and rCTFE = 0.737 at 74 °C, respectively. The copolymers obtained were soluble in HFB and perfluoro‐2‐butyltetrahydrofuran, with Tg in the range of 84–145 °C depending on the copolymer composition. The films of the copolymers were flexible and clear with a low refractive index (1.3350–1.3770 at 532 nm). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6571–6578, 2009  相似文献

Free‐radical copolymerizations of vinyl acetate (VAc = M1) and other vinyl esters (= M2) including vinyl pivalate (VPi), vinyl 2,2‐bis(trifluoromethyl)propionate (VF6Pi), and vinyl benzoate (VBz) with fluoroalcohols and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the solvents were investigated. The fluoroalcohols affected not only the stereochemistry but also the polymerization rate. The polymerization rate was higher in the fluoroalcohols than in THF. The accelerating effect of the fluoroalcohols on the polymerization was probably due to the interaction of the solvents with the ester side groups of the monomers and growing radical species. The difference in the monomer reactivity ratios (r1, r2) in THF and 2,2,2‐trifluoroethanol was relatively small for all reaction conditions and for the monomers tested in this work, whereas r1 increased in the VAc‐VF6Pi copolymerization and r2 decreased in the VAc‐VPi copolymerization when perfluoro‐tert‐butyl alcohol was used as the solvent. These results were ascribed to steric and monomer‐activating effects due to the hydrogen bonding between the monomers and solvents. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Partially fluorinated and perfluorinated dioxolane and dioxane derivatives have been prepared to investigate the effect of fluorine substituents on their free‐radical polymerization products. The partially fluorinated monomer 2‐difluoromethylene‐1,3‐dioxolane (I) was readily polymerized with free‐radical initiators azobisisobutyronitrile or tri(n‐butyl)borane–air and yielded a vinyl addition product. However, the hydrocarbon analogue, 2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxolane (II), produced as much as 50% ring opening product at 60 °C by free‐radical polymerization. 2‐Difluoromethylene‐4‐methyl‐1,3‐dioxolane (III) was synthesized and its free‐radical polymerization yielded ring opening products: 28% at 60 °C, decreasing to 7 and 4% at 0 °C and −78 °C, respectively. All the fluorine‐substituted, perfluoro‐2‐methylene‐4‐methyl‐1,3‐dioxolane (IV) produced only a vinyl addition product with perfluorobenzoylperoxide as an initiator. The six‐membered ring monomer, 2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxane (V), caused more than 50% ring opening during free‐radical polymerization. However, the partially fluorinated analogue, 2‐difluoromethylene‐1,3‐dioxane (VI), produced only 22% ring opening product with free‐radical polymerization and the perfluorinated compound, perfluoro‐2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxane (VII), yielded only the vinyl addition polymer. The ring opening reaction and the vinyl addition steps during the free‐radical polymerization of these monomers are competitive reactions. We discuss the reaction mechanism of the ring opening and vinyl addition polymerizations of these partially fluorinated and perfluorinated dioxolane and dioxane derivatives. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluorene‐based polymers containing various fluorinated benzene (fluorobenzene, p‐difluorobenzene, and tetrafluorobenzene) moieties were synthesized. In addition, perfluorooctylation of poly‐[(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)‐co‐(fluorene‐2,7‐diyl)] was carried out to afford fluorene‐based polymers with perfluorooctyl moiety at the 9‐position on the fluorene ring. To evaluate the effect of fluorine moiety, polymers containing nonfluorinated benzene moieties and nonfluorinated octyl groups were synthesized. The photoluminescence measurements indicated that all these polymers exhibited blue emission in solution, but a polymer containing a perfluorooctyl group did not emit in the film state. Polymers containing various fluorinated benzene moieties showed higher fluorescence quantum yields and thermal stability than those containing nonfluorinated benzene. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2,3,4,5,6‐Pentafluoro and 4‐trifluoromethyl 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro styrenes were readily copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) by a free radical initiator. The copolymers were soluble in tetrahydrofuran and acetone. The films obtained were transparent and flexible. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the copolymers were found positively deviated from the Gordon–Taylor equation. The positive deviation could be accounted for by dipole–dipole intrachain interaction between the methyl ester group of MMA and the highly fluorinated aromatic moiety, which resulted in a decrease in the segmental mobility of the polymer chains and the enhanced Tg values of the copolymers. The water absorption of PMMA was greatly decreased by copolymerization of MMA with the highly fluorinated styrenes. With as little as 10 mol % of pentafluoro styrene content in the copolymer, the water absorption was decreased to one‐third of that for pure PMMA. The fluorinated styrenes‐MMA copolymers were thermally stable up to 420 °C under air and nitrogen atmospheres. With 50 mol % of MMA in the copolymer, the copolymer was still stable up to 350 °C. Since these copolymers contain a large number of fluorine atoms, the light absorption in the region of the visible to near infrared is decreased in comparison with nonfluorinated polymers. Thus, these copolymers may be suitable for application in optical devices, such as optical fibers and waveguides. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Tris(pentafluorophenyl)gallium ( 3 ) and aluminum ( 7 ) are active coinitiators for the production of medium‐high molecular weight (MW) polymers of styrene and isobutene (IB) under aqueous reaction conditions. Strong Brønsted acids formed in situ by reaction of these coinitiators with background moisture present in the monomer droplet ( 5 and 8 , respectively) are believed to be responsible for inducing cationic polymerization of these monomers. Of the two, 7 is the most active for IB polymerization in both aqueous media and anhydrous aliphatic solvents. These results are in contradistinction to tris(pentafluorophenyl)boron ( 2 ), which is incapable of polymerizing IB in aqueous or aliphatic media. The MWs of the polyisobutenes (PIBs) produced under aqueous conditions by either coinitiator greatly exceed those formed under similar reaction conditions by the strongly acidic chelating diborane (1,2‐C6F4[B(C6F5)2]2, 1 ) or diborole (1,2‐C6F4[9‐BC12F8]2, 6 ). Both 3 and 7 are readily synthesized from the corresponding Group 13 halide compounds in conjunction with bis(pentafluorophenyl)zinc ( 4 ). Aqueous polymerization of IB dissolved in aliphatic solvents with 3 or 7 can yield PIBs with relatively narrow polydispersities. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As a novel synthetic strategy for copolymers of vinyl alcohol, we propose herein copolymerization of alkoxyvinylsilanes with other vinyl monomers, followed by oxidative cleavage of the alkoxysilyl groups attached to the main chain of the resulting copolymers. Radical copolymerization of di(isobutoxy)methylvinylsilane 1 with styrene afforded poly( 1 ‐ran‐styrene)s with a variety of compositions of both repeating units, although the Mn's (<9000) and yields (<35%) were rather low. The oxidative cleavage of the alkoxysilyl groups in the copolymers with m‐chloroperbenzoic acid proceeded efficiently, giving poly(vinyl alcohol‐ran‐styrene)s, which were soluble in common organic solvents. The structures of the poly(vinyl alcohol‐ran‐styrene)s were characterized by NMR, GPC, elemental analysis, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This investigation reported the preparation of fluorinated and nonamphiphilic well‐defined poly(styrene)‐block‐poly(2,2,3,3,4,4,4‐heptafluorobutyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PHFBMA) diblock copolymers via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Their chemical composition, structure, and bulk morphology were thoroughly investigated. In addition, their self‐assembly behavior in a dilute organic mixture solution was investigated. It was found that that the ATRP could be used to prepare the well‐defined fluorinated and nonamphiphilic PS‐b‐PHFBMA diblock copolymers in a controlled manner. The results also showed that abundant morphologies including sphere, worm‐like structure, and vesicle could be formed with different volume ratios of these two solvents, which proves that the nonamphiphilic fluorinated diblock copolymers can self‐assemble in a dilute solution, and the aforementioned reason for self‐assembly was also discussed preliminarily in this work. Finally, the effect of temperature on the aggregates was investigated to verify whether the self‐assembly behavior was to some extent temperature sensitive. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel fluorinated main‐chain liquid‐crystalline/crystalline polymers were prepared through thin film polymerization to investigate the effect of –(C6F4)– on the surface free energy. The fluorine in the phenyl rings does not lower the total surface free energy of the thin copolymer films, compared to those without fluorine. Interestingly, the Lewis acid components (γ+) of the surface free energy of the fluorine‐containing polymers increase with an increase in the –(C6F4)– content, indicating the increasing electron accepting character of the surface.  相似文献

Several α-olefins containing the trifluoromethyl group were prepared and characterized. 4,4,4-Trifluoro-1-butene, 3-trifluoromethyl-1-butene, 5,5,5-trifluoro-1-pentene, and 4-trifluoromethyl-1-pentene were homopolymerized with VCl3–Al(i-Bu)3 catalyst. The trifluorobutenes gave low-melting polymers with low fluorine contents. Polymers obtained from the trifluoropentenes were soluble having moderately high intrinsic viscosities. Copolymerizations of these monomers with their nonfluorinated homologs by the same catalyst system indicated low reactivities of the fluoromonomers. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the fluorinated and nonfluorinated monomers and their respective spectroscopic studies with the catalyst (C5H5)2TiCl2–Al(CH3)3 indicated an electron deficiency of the vinyl group of the fluorobutenes. This was related to the inductive effect of the trifluoromethyl group. The inductive effect of this group was absent in the fluoropentenes and the nonfluorinated monomers. The electron-deficient vinyl group of the fluorobutenes apparently did not allow these monomers to coordinate with the active sites of the catalyst. Polymerization studies of the nonfluorinated monomers, 1-butene, 3-methyl-1-butene, 1-pentane, and 4-methyl-1-pentene, with the catalyst VCl3–Al(Bu)3, were performed in the presence of compounds containing the trifluoromethyl group. Results indicated that this group did not retard the rate of polymerization of these monomers. Evidence is presented to show that a catalytic amount of benzotrifluoride enhanced the rate of polymerization of α-olefins, particularly that of sterically hindered monomers such as 3-methyl-1-butene.  相似文献

To address the need for perfluoro polymers with higher Tg, we have prepared and characterized various perfluorodioxolane monomers via direct fluorination of the hydrocarbon precursors. These monomers were readily polymerized in bulk or in solution initiated by perfluorodibenzoyl peroxide. The polymers obtained have relatively high Tg(~160°C) and exhibited low material dispersion. These polymers are completely amorphous and soluble in fluorinated solvents. The polymers are also chemically and thermally stable (Tg > 300°C). Thus, these perfluorodioxolane polymers may be used as plastic optical fiber material where high Tg is required, such as in automobile and aircraft application. These perfluorodioxolane polymers were also investigated for use as gas separation membrane. Among these polymers, the copolymer of perfluoro (2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxolane) and perfluoro (2‐methylene‐4,5‐dimethyl dioxolane) showed superior gas separation performance compared with the commercial perfluoro polymers for a number of gas pair, including CO2/CH4, He/CH4, H2/CH4, and N2/CH4. A series of new fluorinated polythiophenes has been synthesized by oxidative chemical and electrochemical polymerization and by Ullmann coupling. The substitution with the perfluoroalkyl alkyl chain CH2CH2C6F13 on the 3 position of the thiophene ring is performed via an ester, thioester, or amide connector, (CH2)m‐C(O)X, m = 0–2, with a view to investigating the role of the linker on the polymerization and on the properties of the corresponding polymers. The bromination of the monomers at the 2 and 5 positions allows the use of Ullmann coupling to form soluble fluorinated oligomers. The electron affinity was determined from cyclic voltammetry and a value of 3.1 eV was found for the ester derivative; such materials represent interesting candidates for use in light‐emitting devices or as an electron accepting material in photodiodes/solar cells. The oxidative polymerizations need the connector to be spaced out from the heterocycle to reduce its withdrawal effect. The ester, thioester, and amide spacer determined to a large extent the efficiency of the oxidative polymerization, and particularly the electropolymerization, as well as the solubility of the polymers formed. All the polymers were analyzed by GPC and by UV–visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. The electrochemical oxidation of the thioester and amide group prevents the formation of electroactive films by electropolymerization. But in the case of the ester group, the electroformed polymer exhibits exceptional stable superhydrophobic and lipophobic properties because of a porous surface and the presence of a fluorinated chain that confers low surface energy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Vinyl‐type copolymerization of norbornene (NBE) and 5‐NBE‐2‐yl‐acetate (NBE‐OCOMe) in toluene were investigated using a novel homogeneous catalyst system based on bis(β‐ketonaphthylamino)Ni(II)/B(C6F5)3/AlEt3. The copolymerization behavior as well as the copolymerization conditions, such as the levels of B(C6F5)3 and AlEt3, temperature, and monomer feed ratios, which influence on the copolymerization were examined. Without combination of AlEt3, the catalytic bis(β‐ketonaphthylamino)Ni(II)/B(C6F5)3 exhibited very high catalyst activity for polymerization of NBE. Combination of AlEt3 in catalyst system resulted in low conversion for polymerization of NBE. For copolymerization of NBE and NBE‐OCOMe, involvement of AlEt3 in catalyst is necessary. Slight addition of NBE‐OCOMe in copolymerization of NBE and NBE‐OCOMe gives rise to significant increase of catalyst activity for catalytic system bis(β‐ketonaphthylamino)Ni(II)/B(C6F5)3/AlEt3. Nevertheless, excess increase of the NBE‐OCOMe content in the comonomer feed ratios results in decrease of conversion as well as activity of catalyst. The achieved copolymers were confirmed to be vinyl‐addition copolymers through the analysis of FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectra. 13C NMR studies further revealed the composition of the copolymer and the incorporation rate was 7.6–54.1 mol % ester units at a content of 30–90 mol % of the NBE‐OCOMe in the monomer feeds ratios. TGA analysis results showed that the copolymer exhibited good thermal stability (Td > 410 °C) and failed to observe the glass transitions temperature over 300 °C. The copolymers are confirmed to be noncrystalline by WAXD analysis results and show good solubility in common organic solvents. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The syntheses of fluorinated vinyl ethers (H2C?CHOCH2CH2CnF2n+1, n = 6 or 8) and their copolymerizations with bis(4‐vinyloxybutyl) isophthalate are reported. The fluorinated monomers were prepared by the transetherification of ethyl vinyl ether and fluorinated alcohols in a 75% yield. Added in low concentrations (0.1–3.0 wt %) to formulations containing bis(4‐vinyloxybutyl) isophthalate, they did not affect the kinetics of the cationic photopolymerization. The cured films were transparent and showed interesting properties in terms of wettability, hardness, cross‐cut adhesion, and chemical inertness. The fluoromonomers increased the hydrophobicity of the film surface, whereas the adhesion on various substrates such as glass and wood was unchanged. An increase in the methyl ethyl ketone resistance was also observed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 2890–2897, 2003  相似文献

Four families of hyperbranched amphiphilic block copolymers of styrene (Sty, less polar monomer) and 2‐vinylpyridine (2VPy, one of the two more polar monomers) or 4‐vinylpyridine (4VPy, the other polar monomer) were prepared via self‐condensing vinyl reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (SCVP‐RAFT). Two families contained 4VPy as the more polar monomer, one of which possessing a Sty‐b‐4VPy architecture, and the other possessing the reverse block architecture. The other two families bore 2VPy as the more polar monomer and had either a 2VPy‐b‐Sty or a Sty‐b‐2VPy architecture. Characterization of the hyperbranched block copolymers in terms of their molecular weights and compositions indicated better control when the VPy monomers were polymerized first. Control over the molecular weights of the hyperbranched copolymers was also confirmed with the aminolysis of the dithioester moiety at the branching points to produce linear polymers with number‐average molecular weights slightly greater than the theoretically expected ones, due to recombination of the resulting thiol‐terminated linear polymers. The amphiphilicity of the hyperbranched copolymers led to their self‐assembly in selective solvents, which was probed using atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering, which indicated the formation of large spherical micelles of uniform diameter. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study presents the synthesis and properties of linear PVDF-based amphiphilic triblock terpolymers with PS and PEO, [PVDF-b-PS-b-PEO], by adopting a procedure that involves: (a) iodine-transfer polymerization (ITP) of VDF with 1-iodoperfluorohexane (C6F13I) serving as chain-transfer agent (CTA) to afford C6F13-PVDF-I, (b) ITP of styrene with the C6F13-PVDF-I macromolecular-CTA to obtain C6F13-PVDF-b-PS-I diblock copolymer, (c) end-group exchange from iodo- to azido-group by nucleophilic substitution reaction with NaN3, and (d) copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) with alkyne-terminated PEO to achieve C6F13-PVDF-b-PS-b-PEO triblock terpolymers. The 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of all blocks, while gel permeation chromatography traces showed the living nature of ITP technique. The self-assembly of these terpolymers was investigated in films (atomic force microscopy and DSC), as well as in aqueous and organic solvents (DLS). The analysis of crystalline phases based on the FTIR spectroscopy indicated the conversion of PVDF α-phase into α + β-phases and β + γ-phases upon the incorporation of PS and PEO blocks, respectively. The synthesized amphiphilic copolymers were evaluated (fluorescence spectroscopy) as carriers of small hydrophobic molecules in water. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A simple mathematic model for the free radical polymerization of chain transfer monomers containing both polymerizable vinyl groups and telogen groups was proposed. The molecular architecture of the obtained polymer can be prognosticated according to the developed model, which was validated experimentally by homopolymerization of 4‐vinyl benzyl thiol (VBT) and its copolymerization with styrene. The chain transfer constant (CT) of telogen group in a chain transfer monomer is considered to play an important role to determine the architecture of obtained polymer according to the proposed model, either in homopolymerization or copolymerization. A highly branched polymer will be formed when the CT value is around unity, while a linear polymer with a certain extent of side chains will be obtained when the CT value is much bigger or smaller than unity. The CT of VBT was determined to be around 15 by using the developed model and 1H NMR monitored experiments. The obtained poly(VBT) and its copolymers were substantiated to be mainly consisted of linear main chain with side branching chains, which is in agreement with the anticipation from the developed model. The glass transition temperature, number average molecular weight, and its distribution of those obtained polymer were primarily investigated. This model is hopefully to be used as a strategy to select appropriate chain transfer monomers for preparing hyperbranched polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
