Dislocation events are seen as excursions or pop-in events in the load–displacement curve of nanoindentation experiments. Two nanoindenters have been used to examine the difference between quasi-static and dynamic loading during indentation. Yield excursions were present in the load–displacement curves of both the statically and dynamically loaded single crystal nickel samples. Only one major excursion occurred in each quasi-static indent, nominally loaded at 100 μN/s while staircase yielding was observed under dynamic loading indentation with a 45 Hz oscillation of 2 nm superimposed on a 60 μN/s loading rate. Thermal activation analysis is used to explain the arrest and reinitiation of the yielding with activation volumes being modeled. For nanoindentation experiments differences between quasi-static and dynamic loading are described by the models presented. It is proposed that insight into the plastic deformation mechanisms associated with such plastic instabilities will provide one of the keys to length scale effects necessary to understanding nanostructures.  相似文献

Discrete dislocation simulations of two boundary value problems are used as numerical experiments to explore the extent to which the nonlocal crystal plasticity theory of Gurtin (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 50 (2002) 5) can reproduce their predictions. In one problem simple shear of a constrained strip is analyzed, while the other problem concerns a two-dimensional model composite with elastic reinforcements in a crystalline matrix subject to macroscopic shear. In the constrained layer problem, boundary layers develop that give rise to size effects. In the composite problem, the discrete dislocation solutions exhibit composite hardening that depends on the reinforcement morphology, a size dependence of the overall stress-strain response for some morphologies, and a strong Bauschinger effect on unloading. In neither problem are the qualitative features of the discrete dislocation results represented by conventional continuum crystal plasticity. The nonlocal plasticity calculations here reproduce the behavior seen in the discrete dislocation simulations in remarkable detail.  相似文献

A nonlinear kinematic hardening rule is developed here within the framework of thermodynamic principles. The derived kinematic hardening evolution equation has three distinct terms: two strain hardening terms and a dynamic recovery term that operates at all times. The proposed hardening rule, which is referred in this paper as the FAPC (Fredrick and Armstrong–Phillips–Chaboche) kinematic hardening rule, shows a combined form of the Frederick and Armstrong backstress evolution equation, Phillips evolution equation, and Chaboche series rule. A new term is incorporated into the Frederick and Armstrong evolution equation that appears to have agreement with the experimental observations that show the motion of the center of the yield surface in the stress space is directed between the gradient to the surface at the stress point and the stress rate direction at that point. The model is further modified in order to simulate nonproportional cyclic hardening by proposing a measure representing the degree of nonproportionality of loading. This measure represents the topology of the incremental stress path. Numerically, it represents the angle between the current stress increment and the previous stress increment, which is interpreted through the material constants of the kinematic hardening evolution equation. This new kinematic hardening rule is incorporated in a material constitutive model based on the von Mises plasticity type and the Chaboche isotropic hardening type. Numerical integration of the incremental elasto-plastic constitutive equations is based on a simple semi-implicit return-mapping algorithm and the full Newton–Raphson iterative method is used to solve the resulting nonlinear equations. Experimental simulations are conducted for proportional and non-proportional cyclic loadings. The model shows good correlation with the experimental results.  相似文献

A strain gradient-dependent crystal plasticity approach is presented to model the constitutive behaviour of polycrystal FCC metals under large plastic deformation. In order to be capable of predicting scale dependence, the heterogeneous deformation-induced evolution and distribution of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) are incorporated into the phenomenological continuum theory of crystal plasticity. Consequently, the resulting boundary value problem accommodates, in addition to the ordinary stress equilibrium condition, a condition which sets the additional nodal degrees of freedom, the edge and screw GND densities, proportional (in a weak sense) to the gradients of crystalline slip. Next to this direct coupling between microstructural dislocation evolutions and macroscopic gradients of plastic slip, another characteristic of the presented crystal plasticity model is the incorporation of the GND-effect, which leads to an essentially different constitutive behaviour than the statistically stored dislocation (SSD) densities. The GNDs, by their geometrical nature of locally similar signs, are expected to influence the plastic flow through a non-local back-stress measure, counteracting the resolved shear stress on the slip systems in the undeformed situation and providing a kinematic hardening contribution. Furthermore, the interactions between both SSD and GND densities are subject to the formation of slip system obstacle densities and accompanying hardening, accountable for slip resistance. As an example problem and without loss of generality, the model is applied to predict the formation of boundary layers and the accompanying size effect of a constrained strip under simple shear deformation, for symmetric double-slip conditions.  相似文献

A new nonlinear thermo-mechanical model for heavily jointed rock masses is presented. The model describes poroelasticity, shear-enhanced compaction and brittle–ductile transition in dry porous rocks. The key input parameters of the model, such as elastic moduli, tensile and compressive strength are expressed as functions of the reference porosity of the rock. These functions are based on empirical data for limestones and sandstones and assume that the medium is isotropic. The effect of joints is modeled by scaling down the key model parameters. The scaling rules are found with the help of explicit numerical modeling of randomly jointed media.  相似文献

Aspects of the cyclically saturated responses of initially annealed, conventional grain size (average grain diameter of approximately 50 μm) and electrodeposited, ultrafine grain (grains from 20 to 500 nm) nickel to reversed proportional and 90° out-of-phase axial-torsional, strain-controlled cycling at a nominally constant equivalent inelastic strain amplitude of approximately 100 μ strain are reported. An anisotropic, axial-torsional subspace version of Abdel-Karim and Ohno’s kinematic hardening model is presented. Within the framework of conventional small strain, rate-independent plasticity, this approach is used to model the responses. An anhysteretic, phenomenolically based, magnetomechanical model is coupled to the rate-independent plasticity model to include the cyclic magnetostriction response. The kinematic hardening parameter determination scheme, using the proportional path responses, is described. The model correlations achieved are presented and the ability of the resulting models to capture the 90° out-of-phase responses is examined. The model parameter sets, as determined from the proportional responses, require small changes to result in more accurate correlation of the 90° out-of-phase responses and the implications of this are discussed. The relative values of the model parameters between the two materials reflect the initial microstructures. Persistent mean stresses associated with mean total strains imposed are successfully modeled for the proportional strain path responses but not for the 90° out-of-phase responses.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the experimental behaviour of a 16MND5 steel (french vessel steel) under complex loading. A particular attention is paid to plasticity induced by phase transformation. We present an experimental set-up to apply thermo-mechanical loads under tension-torsion. This apparatus enables us to reach temperature of 1200 °C at a maximum heating rate of 60 °C s−1 and a high cooling rate of −30 °C s−1. A series of tests is performed in order to show the rule of loading on transformation plasticity.  相似文献

The bi-axial experimental equipment [Flores, P., Rondia, E., Habraken, A.M., 2005a. Development of an experimental equipment for the identification of constitutive laws (Special Issue). International Journal of Forming Processes] developed by Flores enables to perform Bauschinger shear tests and successive or simultaneous simple shear tests and plane strain tests. Flores investigates the material behavior with the help of classical tensile tests and the ones performed in his bi-axial machine in order to identify the yield locus and the hardening model. With tests performed on one steel grade, the methods applied to identify classical yield surfaces such as [Hill, R., 1948. A theory of the yielding and plastic flow of anisotropic materials. Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A 193, 281–297; Hosford, W.F., 1979. On yield loci of anisotropic cubic metals. In: Proceedings of the 7th North American Metalworking Conf. (NMRC), SME, Dearborn, MI, pp. 191–197] ones as well as isotropic Swift type hardening, kinematic Armstrong–Frederick or Teodosiu and Hu hardening models are explained. Comparison with the Taylor–Bishop–Hill yield locus is also provided. The effect of both yield locus and hardening model choices is presented for two applications: plane strain tensile test and Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF).  相似文献

Polymer matrix composites are widely used in the automotive industry and undergo fatigue loadings. The investigation of the nonlinear cyclic behaviour of such materials is a required preliminary work for a confident fatigue design, but has not involved many publications in the literature. This paper presents an extensive experimental study conducted on a polyamide 66 reinforced with 35 wt% of short glass fibres (PA66 GF35), at room temperature. The material was tested in two conditions: dry-as-moulded (DAM) and at the equilibrium with air containing 50% of relative humidity (RH50).An exhaustive experimental campaign in tensile mode has been carried out, including various strain or stress rates, complex mechanical histories and local thermo-mechanical recordings. Such an extended database allowed us to highlight several complex physical phenomena: viscoelastic effects at different time scales, irrecoverable mechanisms, non-linear kinematic hardening, non-linear viscous flow rule, cyclic softening.Taking into account this advanced analysis, a constitutive model describing the cyclic behaviour is proposed. As the experimental database only includes uniaxial tensile tests, the general 3D anisotropic frame is reduced to an uniaxial model valid for a specific orientation distribution. The robust identification process is based on tests which enable the uncoupling between the underlined mechanical features. This strategy leads to a model which accurately predicts the cyclic behaviour of conditioned as well as dry materials under complex tensile loadings.  相似文献

Experimental results of monotonic uniaxial tensile tests at different strain rates and the reversed strain cycling test showed the characteristics of rate-dependence and cyclic hardening of Z2CND18.12N austenitic stainless steel at room temperature, respectively. Based on the Ohno-Wang kinematic hardening rule, a visco-plastic constitutive model incorporated with isotropic hardening was developed to describe the uniaxial ratcheting behavior of Z2CND18.12N steel under various stress-controlled loading conditions. Predicted results of the developed model agreed better with experimental results when the ratcheting strain level became higher, but the developed model overestimated the ratcheting deformation in other cases. A modified model was proposed to improve the prediction accuracy. In the modified model, the parameter mi of the Ohno-Wang kinematic hardening rule was developed to evolve with the accumulated plastic strain. Simulation results of the modified model proved much better agreement with experiments.  相似文献

The total stress response of material is decomposed into a sum of an equilibrium stress response and a non-equilibrium overstress response. Correspondingly, the rate-independent intrinsic time and the rate-dependent intrinsic time are defined respectively. Additional hardening functions for describing the isotropic and anisotropic nonproportional effects are assumed to be related to the accumulation of plastic strain component along the normal of equilibrium stress trajectory, in which the effects of geometry of the loading path are included. An endochronic constitutive model for rate-dependent, nonproportional cyclic plasticity is formulated and applied to simulate the stress responses of stainless steel XCrNi18.9 for some typical loading programs at different loading rates. A comparison between predicted results and experimental ones by Haupt and Lion shows that the former are in agrreement with the latter.  相似文献

Constitutive equations are often used to describe the stress-strain behaviour of metallic materials. This allows the execution of parametric studies for various purposes. Despite the large number of developed stress-strain equations, all frequently applied ones fail to accurately describe a strain hardening behaviour in two distinct stages, which many metallic materials tend to show. For this purpose, the authors developed a new stress-strain model, based on the well-known Ramberg-Osgood equation, which focuses on this two-stage strain hardening behaviour. This article describes the model and its analytical background, along with a graphical method to derive suited model parameters. To validate the proposed methodology, it is applied on stress-strain curves of two high-strength steels, an aluminium alloy and a duplex stainless-steel alloy. Whereas a good correspondence for the stainless-steel alloy is confined to limited plastic strains, excellent agreements are observed for the steels and the aluminium alloy. Following the proposed method, it was possible to obtain model parameter values that give a good correspondence within a detectable strain range.  相似文献

Aubin and her coworkers conducted a unique set of experiments demonstrating the influence of loading non-proportionality on ratcheting responses of duplex stainless steel. In order to further explore their new observation, a set of experiments was conducted on stainless steel (SS) 304L under various biaxial stress-controlled non-proportional histories. This new set of data reiterated Aubin and her coworkers’ observation and illustrated many new responses critical to model development and validation. Two recent and different classes of cyclic plasticity models, the modified Chaboche model proposed by Bari and Hassan and the version of the multi-mechanism model proposed by Taleb and Cailletaud, are evaluated in terms of their simulations of the SS304L non-proportional ratcheting responses. A modeling scheme for non-proportional ratcheting responses using the kinematic hardening rule parameters in addition to the conventionally used isotropic hardening rule parameter (yield surface size change) in the modified Chaboche model is evaluated. Strengths and weaknesses of the models in simulating the non-proportional ratcheting responses are identified. Further improvements of these models needed for improving the non-proportional ratcheting simulations are suggested in the paper.  相似文献

A unified plasticity model for cyclic behaviour of clay and sand   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This paper presents the development and an experimental evaluation of a simple unified bounding surface plasticity theory for modelling the stress–strain behaviour of sand and clay under both drained and undrained cyclic loading conditions. The model concerned is called CASM-c, which is based on the unified critical state model CASM developed by Yu [Yu, H.S., 1995. A unified critical state model for clay and sand. Civil Engineering Research Report No. 112.08.1995. University of Newcastle, NSW 2308, Australia; Yu, H.S., 1998. CASM: a unified state parameter model for clay and sand. International Journal of Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics 22, 621–653]. CASM is a relatively simple model as it only requires seven model constants, five of which are the same as those used in the modified Cam-clay model. All these constants have clear physical meanings and may be easily determined from the results of triaxial tests. A key advantage of CASM over many other existing critical state models lies on its simplicity and unified nature as it can model the behaviour of both clay and sand. The extension of the model CASM presented in this paper consists of adopting the bounding surface plasticity theory and treating the reloading and unloading processes differently when calculating the hardening modulus. As a result, a smooth transition of stiffness and gradual accumulation of permanent strain and/or pore pressure in unload–reload cycles as well as the hysteretic behaviour can be reproduced. The results of model simulations show an encouraging agreement with experimental data from triaxial tests subjected to both one-way and two-way cyclic loading conditions.  相似文献

A new stress resultant constitutive model for reinforced concrete plates under cyclic solicitations is presented. This model is built by the periodic homogenisation approach using the averaging method and couples damage of concrete and periodic debonding between concrete and steel rebar. In one-dimensional situations, we derive a closed-form solution of the local problem useful to verify and set up the plate problem. The one dimensional macroscopic constitutive model involves a limited number of parameters, the sensibility of which is studied. Comparison to experimental results underlines the pertinence of the model by considering internal debonding in order to properly represent the mechanical dissipation occurring during cyclic loadings on reinforced concrete panels.  相似文献

In-plane tension and compression experiments on copper alloy sheets (phosphor bronze) and 6000 series aluminum alloy sheets (AA6016-T4) were conducted using a specially designed testing apparatus. The apparatus is equipped with comb-type dies so that stress–strain curves of a sheet specimen subjected to tension followed by compression, and vice versa, can be measured without buckling of the specimen, as well as those for monotonic tension and compression. A difference was observed in the flow stresses between tension and compression for the as-received copper alloy, but not for the aluminum alloy. Moreover, stress reversal tests, such as tension followed by compression and compression followed by tension, were carried out in order to measure the Bauschinger effect. In the second part of the experiment, bending moment–curvature diagrams were measured for the as-received and pre-stretched specimens. The bending moment–curvature diagrams were compared with those calculated using the stress–strain curves obtained from the tension–compression tests, and were in good agreement with those calculated with the tension–compression asymmetry and the Bauschinger effect correctly reproduced.  相似文献
